  • Sounds weird to compare the Toyota Supra to the Subaru BRZ, but Toyota offers a four-cylinder version that's closer in price and much closer in performance than you might think. Relative to its six-cylinder offering. So which of the two is right for you? We team up with ‪@kbb‬ 's own Micah Muzio to find out!

    As a relatively old fart, I can tell you that chasing power is not the answer, and neither is forced induction. My favorite ownership experiences were all sub-2,900 pound naturally aspirated manuals (924S, NA Miata, RSX-S, 986 Boxster S), and not connecting the dots at the time, I started buying muscle because I thought it was the only thing I was missing - big V8s, turbos. I was dead wrong.

      I currently own a 2022 GR Supra 3.0 Premium. Prior to that, I had a '93 RX7 and a '12 Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec.
      That being said, the most fun I've had whipping a car around corners, was in a friends old stock '91 Miata. I absolutely love speed, but there's something about being able to push a car to its limits, without really being worried about wrapping yourself around a tree.

  • @MrNorotic

    I sell Toyota's. Me and my co worker were having a debate on 4 cyl supra vs gr86.
    I was mentioning how the 4 cyl supra is only marginally better, performance wise, and yes the interior is a little bit better but, it's not worth paying an extra 18-20k more. You get waaaay worse visibility on the supra and it is less practical. While no one will be able to sit in the back seats in a gr86, you can atleast use that space as extra storage. Supra is exclusively 2 seats.
    Cost of ownership would be a lot higher on the supra because BMW vs the gr86 using subaru parts. HP mods would probably be better on the supra because it already comes turbo from factory.
    The supra definately looks better in person I can give it that although, as a whole, considering the huge price difference between the cars and marginal performance difference to me it makes no sense as to why anyone would get a 4 cyl supra over a gr86. Either get the 6 cyl supra or dont bother.

      If it had the same 4 cylinder engine as the 90s supra it would be a no brainer. Literally nobody cared about the Supra till Toyota started pushing out those 3s powered ones and winning races. All of a sudden it's on the cover of Gran Turismo. 2jz is a slow turd engine for a track car. Toyota was forced to go back to the 2jz for jgtc and ended up discontinuing the car lol. The 3s motor could make 1000 hp reliably and it weighed less and sat farther back than the 2jz. Even for pikes peak Toyota always used the 4 banger over the 2jz.

    • @LeFatalpotato
      @LeFatalpotato 2 роки тому +4

      This is the comment. The A90 supra has what it takes to be a classic. It is just 10k more expensive than what it's supposed to be. Remove the fancy interior, lug in a manual, increase the price of options if necessary, but make the 4 banger start at 35k. I think the partnership with BMW moved the supra project in the wrong direction. I feel like they had corporate executives as customers in mind when they started drawing, and priced it accordingly, but they will pick a Porsche every single time over a supra, the kind of people they went for mostly care about the brand name and the associated prestige it brings.

    "I don't have a 3rd pedal there, but what it does free me to do is left foot break." I do that too when I'm driving other people's cars, as I seem to be the only one with a manual vehicle. But as a proficient manual driver, I still left foot break often in certain situations. Rally driving really helped to engrain that technique, as well as left foot heel toe... which I don't use regularly, but it can come in handy in certain driving situations. So left foot break while blipping the clutch to downshift with your heel. It is weird, but when you're flying through the trees you don't really think about it, and just let your body do it's thing, if trained it properly. lol

You now have a car that can walk into 350hp and still gives you the driver experience you expect from a brz. Also...screw any self proclaimed drivers car or sports car without a manual. Having complete control over your power band and feeling it through the 3rd pedal and stick are an essential part of the experience. If you want to know why the gr86 platform doesn’t get a turbo blame the 2.0 Supra.
    They should make one good Supra and make 2 tiers of the gr86. One N/A 2.4l and a smaller 1.6 liter turbo. Not only would it help mpg but the smaller turbo motor wouldnt sacrifice balance and weight. It would give a platform for the gear heads with cash in hand a reason to finally give the car a respectable aftermarket lore that everyone keeps asking for, without sacrificing confidence in green light throttle dumps against fwd cars that are cheaper and faster. Every car has a turbo these days so the brz is starting to struggle in basic driving like passing on the highway.

    The new 230i needs to be compared to these cars. You can get a BMW 230i with all the performance goodies and still be slightly under the 2.0 Supra and have useable back seats, better rear differential, better infotainment and better interior. It should definitely be on your radar if you are looking at these two cars.

      I would say the new model is very grown up. As a matter of fact I think all new Japanese cars have very mature styling in their newest models, including supra, Z, brz. The only one I think still looks childish is civic type r, with all those wings and canards, the car looks like the dictionary definition of a ricer.

    How are you going to compare a manual vs a automatic. The BRZ feels like it has more power because it is a manual and you are shifting. While the supra has a computer doing all of the work making it feel like it has less power.

    this comparison makes no sense when the difference of cost is literally over $14k. You don't look at the 86 in the same stratosphere of the Supra in terms of cost when one starts with $29,XXX and the other begins at $43,XXX. Also in terms of value, the 2.0 supra is not $14k better than the 86, especially at only 250hp. The supra is the redheaded step child; too expensive to be compared to miatas and 86s, too slow to compare to other mid 40k cars.
