As a Steelers fan, back then, I watched Neil O'Donnell from the time he was a rookie. He threw a beautiful pass, hitting receivers right on the numbers. But, he was a 3rd round draft choice and there was a good reason for that. He was not a good quarterback when he had to face any kind of pressure. He back-peddled, ran backwards to evade the rush, which, quite often, resulted in a sack for a big loss. Bill Cowher, and the Steelers put a very good team around Neil O'Donnell. That is why he was successful in Pittsburgh. At the time, The Steelers were a power run offense, out of the I-formation. It was the Ron Erhardt (Offensive Coordinator) offense that he brought over from the Giants. The Steelers had great running backs, and an excellent offensive line. They could have won with just about any quarterback. And, they showed that, the year after Neil O'Donnell left, when his backup, Mike Tomczak, took the Steelers into playoffs. The Jets were fools for making O'Donnell their big signing. He didn't last half of a season without a good offensive line, and running game. It has been over 50 years since the Jets won Super Bowl 3. New York is a huge NFL market. There is just no excuse for their losing ways, over the years. It starts at the top, with the ownership, General Manager, and Coach.
The irony of this whole situation with O'Donnell for me was when they missed out on the playoffs in 1997 in Detroit when Parcells decided to try and win despite O'Donnell, who everyone knew he didn't like. O'Donnell was having a good game, the Jets had the lead and Parcells lost that game by having a rookie back Leon Johnson and backup QB Ray Lucas throw key passes that were intercepted when the Jets were coming in for points. O'Donnell should have gotten them to the playoffs in 97.
O'donnell on opening day in 1997 threw 5 tds. He was awful in 1996, but in 1997, he wasn't terrible. He could've led a team like Buffalo to the playoffs, because they had everything but a qb
I vividly remember my NY Jets signing O'Donnell and knew he wasn't gonna do anything. The Jets were utter trash in '96, but even when O'Donnell was on a team loaded with talent in Pittsburgh, he still wasn't the QB that would "pull a rabbit out of the hat" to win you the big game when you needed it. Forget looking at his cumulative stats retrospectively...if you didn't actually watch him play in the 90s, you just don't know. O'Donnell just lacked the intangibles it took to be a truly winning QB
You want to laugh your ass off?...Just watch 1:37 to 1:49 and the expression on Dan Reeve`s face when he looks at Rich Kotite while he`s tying to convince him that O`Donnell`s a good QB. ...Dan`s like, blah, blah, blah, this guy`s nuts! Lol!
This is why Bill Cowher is truly a hall of fame coach. He won in Pittsburgh in spite of having Bubby Brister, Neil O'Donnell, Kordell Stewart, Mike Tomczak and one good year of Tommy Maddox under center. Think of how many more wins and maybe a couple more Super Bowl wins Cowher could have won if he had a real franchise QB like Ben Roethlisberger for the lion share of his coaching career. Bill Cowher had no choice but to ride Jerome Bettis like a horse and play good defense to win games.
No real QBs in Pittsburgh between Terry Bradshaw and Big Ben. If Big Ben retires in the next year or 2, there will be no more Super Bowl chances if Landry Jones is named Ben's successor.
Landry Jones is NOT going to be Big Ben's successor. I am quite sure Landry Jones knows this too. Landry Jones is nothing more than an adequate back up QB in the NFL. I am sure that the Steelers in the the next year or two is going to draft Ben's successor.
lol, I remember the signing, and the rumors leading up to it along with the hype, I didn't get it, I was like whatever not like we had better options and he almost helped us get Peyton Manning, but ofcourse with the Jets good luck he decided to stay in school, so we ended up with nothing.
The top 3 qbs in the jets franchise history are Namath Pennington and Vinny testeverde…mark Sanchez is a top 5 qb in the history of the franchise and might be top 3 let that sink in
It wasn't O'Donnell's fault that defensive linemen was in his face half a second after he took the snap from the center and don't forget the Jets was just a God awful bad team on both sides the ball. That being said as a Steelers fan from way back, Neil O'Donnell was a decent quarterback but he was not a elite quarterback.
Proof of my conspiracy theory of the Superbowl XXX was fixed. Jerry Jones got to Neil O Donnel, at the Superbowl Neil was promised to get the highest contract in football if he just lost that Superbowl game. Why else would the Jets give a loser that big of a contract?🤔
On the first one both receivers turned inside as they were supposed to because of the blitz but the pass sailed. It slipped out of his hand which is what he told Cowher on the sidelines. (watch the Super Bowl XXX highlight film). On the second one the outside receiver ran the wrong route by not turning inside as he was supposed to, once again because of the blitz. O'Donnell threw it to where the receiver should have been. Actually if you carefully watch the aerial replay of that one on the full game video on UA-cam you can see the receiver take one step to the inside in an attempt to fake out Larry Brown and then take off up the field. This actually faked out Neil O'Donnell instead who threw the ball right to Brown. No bribe. Show less
Yeah... he should have we Pittsburgh fans do not put up with bums.. the Steelers management knew they could not keep him after he tossed that superbowl... in pitttsburgh we play hard to the end.. we do not except a QB throwing the game.. and that was clear.

@chickenandwaffles09 Yeah, back then Benigno had the overnight on WFAN and Francesa called him on air to respond to the Parcells critique. They skipped updates and commercials for probably two hours. God, that Cleveland game made me sick- still does. Houston game in 93 was no bargain, as was the Chicago Monday nighter in 91 and KC tie in 88 to name a few.
@nyjin08 I was living in Virginia at the time, but Francessa was close w/ Parcells, so I can believe it... I actually have several games from the 80's on video... They are in my parents basement though... I know I have the Browns playoff debacle on video...
@chickenandwaffles09 Glad you agree. I don't know if you recall the aftermath on WFAN when Joe Benigno and Mike Francesa argued for hours because Benigno criticized Parcells. Do you have any old Jet games by chance, preferably from the 80s?
His stats weren't eye popping but he did throw almost twice as many touchdowns as he did interceptions for his career. Not sure if he should be rated this high, cause he really wasn't that bad....
He wasn't terrible. But when that's really the best way to describe him, then you probably shouldn't be throwing $5 million a year of mid-90's money at him, that was Aikman/Young/Favre money then.
Funny thing was his stats looked nearly identical to Aikman's (O'Donnell has a higher passer rating actually), though Aikman is still unquestionably better
Some things never change. Jets still have a bad QB and an awful head coach. I can't watch any more and its been two years and counting and not sure if I will again.
@nyjin08 Parcells' treatment of O'Donnell typified his post-Giants ineptitude with quarterbacks not named Drew Bledsoe. Parcells thought Ray Lucas could play and he never showed he could. Parcells fell in love with Lucas almost right away and had him throwing in the loss to the Lions in 1997. Lucas wound up playing much of 1999 and somehow won the last four games that year but showed no ability to grow as a quarterback
