Called a block below the waist on qb for tackling the guy who intercepted the ball. Literally makes my blood boil. One of the most disgusting games of my lifetime.
@Tyler L the Seahawks are a newer team and have been through some s*it within the past 2 decades. We won 2013 and we'll eventually win again eventually(most likely without Russell Wilson).
@@AaronRGray No, Hasselbeck threw an interception and then tackled the guy who intercepted it and they called a block below the waste on him, absolutely makes zero sense. He was tackling the guy... wasn't a block. Still baffles me today.

Rest in heaven John Madden. Whether you know it or not, your voice was a huge part of my childhood. Be that watching the Packers games, or playing Madden on N64 and on. ❤
Madden had a great long life making a great living and he never stopped being involved in the sport that he loved so much. We should all be so lucky to live a life like he had. And I agree, some of my fondest memories were listening to him and Pat S calling the Giants games back in the day.
Bro you are SO right, the refs this years are some Ol bull shit across the board!!!! That Greenbay vs Detroit game the other day was absolutely ridiculous!!!!
Both football and basketball are difficult to officiate at full speed. A hold can be called on just about every play, and trying to figure out who made the contact, and who was set or not set when the contact was made.
That means he also got downgraded and probably got sat down for a game or 2. NFL officials and even college officials get scrutinized heavily and graded harshly

Hahaha, I knew exactly what game it was. Three of the officials born and raised in Pittsburgh. That was the worst superbowl I have ever seen. Those officials should of been fired on the spot.
The idea that NFL Officials are not full time employees is a joke. They should just be NFL officials at least during the season and have physical requirements (how about a 6 second 40?) to keep up with the play. No other major sport has part time officials, NFL IS A JOKE!
The Illegal Block call on Hasselbeck was arguably the most idiotic call ever. How do get called for a block.....WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO MAKE A TACKLE?!?!?! ANYONE?
I remember watching the game, rooting for my Seahawks. My father-in-law, a Steelers fan, looked over at me and said "You guys are getting screwed by the refs"
Yes I remember watching the game and thinking we were lucky the Roethlisberger TD didn't get over turned. And that Roethlisberger had played like crap all game and that was the first thing he'd done almost right But happy the Steelers got the win. Home field advantage is a beautiful thing.
I was not a fan of either team, but I remember watching that game. In the end, I realized that Pittsburgh should not have won and that the Seahawks had been robbed.
Especially since Holmy had ALREADY done a "solid" for the NFL by "gifting" the Broncos with the GO AHEAD/winning score robbing the Packers of back to back SB wins. THAT was a "pay back" for Elway being ROBBED of 3 SB's as punishment for him REFUSING to PLAY for the Baltimore Colts, the team that DRAFTED him #1 in the entire draft. He FORCED a trade with Denver and got FLEECED.
I agree but now a days it's defensive holding. The 5 yard rule, no touching a receiver after he goes 5 yards should be thrown out because they can use the call anytime they choose too, just like offensive holding...
@Chaz Bukowski I would love to see a study showing how many teams get offensive holding calls and when on defense get more defensive holding calls. I see some teams play real aggressive grabbing holding receivers1 all the way down the field and no call then 2 mins later see a tricky tac call def holding on the other team...Until we get proven unbiased refs it's always going to be suspect. Like basketball. You see officials getting swayed by crowds and coaches that look suspect...

Look, as a Seahawks fan, I’m not mad at the Steelers for this one, I’m mad at the officiating crew for this one. The Steelers reaped the benefits of bad calls, you can’t fault them for that. Every team has done that.
so did the Seahawks against the 49ers ...but look at the bigger picture every team with a new stadium has been deep into the playoffs or appeared and won a superbowl
Despite the awful officiating, the game was still VERY winnable for Seattle. Watch the whole game again, and watch the Seahawks run the clock out on themselves at the end of each half. Everything about this game was disgusting to watch, officials, offenses, even the commercials sucked, and as much as I love the Rolling Stones even the halftime show sucked. Worst SB of all-time hands down.
I'm a long time Steelers fan currently living in Tacoma Washington. I've admitted to many of the locals that sb40 was a joke. no I'm not giving back the trophy but it was certainly an ugly victory.
Yes, the Steelers get help from NFL refs because it helps the NFL's brand. They are a popular team. But the Cowboys and Patriots get help too. Any high ratings team that is also widely hated gets the NFL bump occasionally. I wonder if its mandatory for NFL refs to have kids; when you have a family to worry about, its easier for the NFL to bribe (or scare?) potential snitches. Never forget ... there are only three American sports that are legally classified as Sports Entertainment in America: Pro Wrestling, Roller Derby ... and NFL football. So legally the NFL is covered.
Why feel bad for them? They're actors in a sports entertainment industry getting paid millions. They know the NFL is not legitimate sports competition and they get paid either way.
@@thelastremaininglogicallib9320 Gotta disagree in regards to the OPI call, you gotta remember that this game was played in 2005 & there was a significantly larger tolerance for contact between receivers & defenders. That wasn't offensive pass interference in 2005. However, the goal line play is inconclusive on replay. Even if the OPI is still called, the Seahawks had time & were in position to stage a comeback during the later two penalties that we agree, were bad calls. I think that if those later two were made correctly the argument for the Seahawks winning that game is just as compelling as the one for the Steelers winning. Robbery.
@@thurston5173 - It was OPI. Pushed off the player, created separation, and prevented the defensive player from following. That's offensive PI in any year. You sometimes would see a player get away with more running or a push down the field, where both players continue in the same direction, but this is a play where the momentum of the movement was completely flipped, so it was more obvious. What was most obvious was that he did it, literally, right in front of the stationary official, who had nothing else to do but look at him and see it.
When Holmgren, the Head of the Officiating Committee and Coach of Seattle says "I didn't know we were gonna have to play the guys in stripes as well" you know it was a terrible game by the Refs.
If you pay attention the announcers bias and how the penalties are being called will tell you who is suppose to win. As much as I enjoy watching the NFL, it's hard to overlook how often it looks rigged. Every year the Superbowl comes across more and more like the WWE.
Seattle was also one of the least-penalized teams in the league that year. Interesting that they finally won a Super Bowl when they got a coach who just assumed his team would accrue a higher rate of penalties.
I would have to say the 2019-2020 season was awful with officiating. Packers Seahawks game is a great example. Giving devante Adams the touchdown when he was short of the goal line and Jimmy Graham the first down when he was short and a few bogus penalties. Take the touchdown away and Seattle would have won.

Madden knew. He was completely nonplussed and taken out of countenance by just how blatantly out-of-line the officiating was. You could hear it in his voice and choice of words, but he was restraining himself at the same time, because that's what you're supposed to do as a professional when you're broadcasting live before millions -- you cannot just go all-in on blurting out what, as it happened, was painfully obvious. Seahawks fans generally have two games they’re mad about. Super Bowl XL Super Bowl XLIX They’re for different reasons, but for slightly older fans, XL just hurts more. XLIX was just a combo of bad play calling and a hall of fam-level defensive play when the win was on the line. Even though that game was a heartbreaker, fair and square from the eyes of a Seahawks fan.
Coaches throw games by making shitty calls. Andy Reid probably threw that game against the Bengals on Sunday by simply not running the ball. It's possible Darrell Bevall threw that game - I NEVER think anything is on the up and up if Brady is involved
We never should have given Brady the ball back. Malcolm Butler defense on the over-the -shoulder pass ended our drive…so MB won it for Pats earlier in the game. Should not have come down to the last mistake of the day…
I often wonder if the Seahawks QB during SB XLIX had been Peyton Manning, Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Brett Favre, etc. instead of Russ Wilson, if they'd have audibled or called time to change that pass play to Lynch for the win? At the time I didn't appreciate whomever referred to Russ Wilson as a "game manager", but dutifully running that pass play on the 1 suggests to me there is some truth to that assessment.
@Aaron Costello we'll always have 2013 buddy!!! 43-8 til we die!!!! I still hate this game too! This is extremely accurate reporting unlike the officiating of that super bowl. When I saw this post I said it had to be the Pittsburgh Seattle super bowl and it was. Every time Seattle threaten to get back in the game the officials will throw some kind of flag with some ticky tack call or even a BS call. While the Steelers got away with everything.

The Steelers scored a TD on a gadget play where Ward got behind the Seattle defense. All that call did was reduce his receiving yards total by 15.

Don't forget, the climate of the entire season was a media love affair send off for Jerome Bettis, his last season. I recall that it seemed as though every show leading up to the game was the media fawning over Bettis. As a Hawks fan, at our first ever SB, I felt a sinking feeling days before the game as the media's focus was only on Pitt and Bettis and were dismissive of Seattle and seemed to be already awarding another SB to the Steelers before the game was ever played. If this game wasn't outright fixed, it was certainly "influenced" in the minds of the refs and the ridiculous calls showed that bias.
A case can be made for the refs winning all 6 Stealers SB games. From the blatantly obvious in the 70's , to the Bus' last game. Things like the ref Stepping between the Rams defender and Harris ( old " triple F Harris " Fat F*n Franco ) deliberately so he could got the last 50 yards on his touchdown run without incident. Or Ben's invisible sneak. And my personal " favourite " , the famous " toetap " on the last play of the SB against the Cardinals. Look at the replay. The Pittsburgh WR has 1 foot in, and the other foot ON TOP OF his other foot. It NEVER touched the turf. And like the Immaculate Deception, the NFL will go back and doctor or destroy every piece of existing footage to support the ref's alternate reality. The thing they can't do, is since 1972 we've had DVD's, VCR's and Blu Rays. And you can't go to everyone's home and wipe the recorders of millions of people. On and on. I was rooting for a good game as well. When the Seahawks got called for the offensive pass interference penalty in the first quarter, there was something that told me that this game was going to go south for Seattle very quickly. I didn't even really think about the officiating until some time later, as at the time I thought it was just a botched call, but looking back on it now, I do have to wonder. I guess my memory wasn't that good at the time, or I am not as attentive to things as I wish I was. I don't know, I am not really sure I would want to win a Super Bowl like this. I mean, how do you think the players from the 1919 Cincinnati Reds felt about winning the World Series when they discovered that the fix was in?
Same. I’ve maintained for years that the NFL has an east coast bias. When a west coast team wins it all, they are leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. Teams like the Patriots haven’t had that burden.
Andy, let me give you some west coast examples. Raiders: Destroyed their opponents in all 3 Super Bowls they played in. 49ers: Destroyed 3 of 5 opponents in Super Bowls they won. Both were leaps and bounds ahead of the rest of the NFL. Ok. Maybe not the 1980 Raiders. The 49ers: 13-3 in 1981. 15-1 in 1984 (first team to win 18 games). 14-2 in 1989, and had the reputation of being the absolute best team in the NFL. The Seahawks in 2013...13-3, and again...destroyed their opponent. Flip side. The LA Rams...in 1979, not leaps and bounds ahead of anyone. Lost to Pittsburgh. 2018....same story. Lost to the Patriots. The Niners in 12 and Hawks in 14, not leaps and bounds ahead of the league. Lost the Super Bowl. Patriots...won the vast majority of their Super Bowls by a field goal. Game could have gone either way. Steelers...you saw the video. A few calls go Dallas’s way, and the Cowboys were the team of the 70s. Buffalo...went to 4, lost to NFC East opponents. East coast teams have won more Super Bowls than any other region.
I remember watching this game and thinking that the fix is so obvious I wouldn’t have been surprised if there were snipers positioned throughout the stadium waiting to pick off Seahawks players if they were going to win.
Maybe the refs in Super Bowl 40 forgot the Lions weren't playing and just figured since they were in the Lions home stadium, they should treat the team wearing dark jerseys as such.

As a Pats fan, I had no dog in the fight. It’s just hard to watch when the fix is obvious. Offensive PI is one of the chief calls used in rigged or scripted games .
I knew exactly what game you were talking about! Biggest rip off ever!!! I remember John Madden kept saying what are the referees seeing??? I heard the referee years later felt so bad for what he did he put a full page ad in the Seattle Times to apologize to every Seahawk fan!
Super-bowel 55 was rigged! For the entire first half the referees throw flags that kept giving the Bucks first downs, which led the Bucs to score so many points in the first half. The referees also ignored the pass-interference that the Bucks committed on the Chiefs in the first half. Then there was a 15 yard penalty called for a Chiefs falling down accidentally and barley bumping a Buck's leg-this was enforced in the 2nd half against the Chiefs as a 15 year penalty. Plus with less than a minute left in the second quarter the Chiefs head coach Andy Reid called two time outs while the Bucks whom had the ball where out of time outs, why? Why would Andy Reid give Brady more time to push the ball up the field and score? Which is exactly what happened. Even I know that with time running out, you don't call time out and help your opponent score another touchdown-this was an incredibly stupid move by the Chiefs, but it was scripted that way. Also notice how in the second half the referees no longer where calling pass interference on the Chief's cornerbacks, since the damage to the Chiefs had already been done in the first half. All of a sudden the Chief's fix that problem that was killing them in the first half? Why didn’t they fix that problem in the first quarter? Why where they playing like amateurs? The Chiefs did not play like the Chiefs, as they never even scored a touchdown, with a series of dropped catches that Chief's receivers usually make, the receivers failed to be effective! Where was the Chief's offense? Where was the speed, the skill, the touch-downs that the Chiefs usually score? Where was the fire? All of a sudden they get to the most important game of the year and they can't even play football, yea right! This whole thing was rigged!
Yeah. I don't get that point. In the Super Bowl, a good chunk of the tickets are sold to "Corporate concerns" but then the rest are divided evenly between the fanbases. If one teams fanbase buys more via the "secondary market", not much the NFL can do about it.
When they called a 15 yard penalty on their QB (Hasselback) for a low block when he is trying to tackle the the guy who intercepted his pass, I knew it was fixed. Roethlisberger actually throw a low block after a hand off on an end around play by the Steelers soon after that in the video. No call.
Called a block below the waist on qb for tackling the guy who intercepted the ball.

Holding calls is the biggest weapon a referee can use to manipulate the game.
I agree but now a days it's defensive holding. The 5 yard rule, no touching a receiver after he goes 5 yards should be thrown out because they can use the call anytime they choose too, just like offensive holding...
If you think this game was legitimate then you my friend, are the dumbass.
@Chaz Bukowski I would love to see a study showing how many teams get offensive holding calls and when on defense get more defensive holding calls. so did the Seahawks against the 49ers ...but look at the bigger picture every team with a new stadium has been deep into the playoffs or appeared and won a superbowl
None Defense, I wouldn’t ask the fans to give up the trophy, it’s yours no matter what.

Robbery.
@@brandonl2555 - Because he didn't go low, you moron. His first contact was shoulder bad to chest, and high on the chest.

Seahawks fans generally have two games they’re mad about.
Super Bowl XL
Super Bowl XLIX
They’re for different reasons, but for slightly older fans, XL just hurts more.
Should not have come down to the last mistake of the day…
that steelers game was just disgusting. ruined my enjoyment of football ever since.
