  • In light of the Aaron Rodgers injury and with the New York Jets facing the Dallas Cowboys this week, with these two worlds intersecting, let's talk about one of the craziest injuries to happen to a Jets quarterback that could only happen to a Jets quarterback. Because Ken O'Brien, in week 9 of the 1990 NFL season, during a game between the New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys, injured his thumb... giving a high-five?

    I was at the game on September 12, 1999 (almost exactly 24 years before the Aaron Rodgers game). My friends had season tickets and invited me along. You could feel the air go out of the stadium when Vinny Testaverde left the game with what we learned was also a torn Achille's tendon. Backup Rick Mirer was also knocked out of that game after throwing two picks, leaving it up to punter Tom Tupa to take over, and he actually threw a pair of touchdowns. As you can guess, my friends immediately identified me as the jinx and I was never invited to attend a Jets game with them.

    • @BallinNQnz
      @BallinNQnz 9 місяців тому +2

      Fredaaron762, Rick Mirer was the 3rd stringer that day while Tupa was the backup qb. Tupa took over as the qb until the 4th quarter when the no. 3 qb can play without prohibiting the backup qb from returning to the game as tupa was also the punter.

      If I’m correct,Tom Tupa also was emergency QB for the Cardinals and played qb at Ohio State. So he could play the position

    Torn Achilles tendon is not just a serious injury, but one of the most painful sports injuries you can get.

      @Lionheart2186 I'm pretty sure Aaron Rodgers is more concerned about his chances at one more ring than the coach or manager's jobs.

      @@Matt_Fields_29it's a serious enough injury to end his season and perhaps a career.
      Given his age, (39) and the amount of recovery time (12-18 months) he might not be able to play again until he's 41.

    I guess Aaron Rodgers' complete tear of his Achilles tendon is just part of Jets lore. I immediately thought about Vinny Testaverde and Leon Johnson suffering season-ending injuries in their 1999 opener at home vs. the Patriots. Being reminded of Kyle Mackey's injury just makes me wonder what's really going on with that franchise. Bizarre.

    I still remember in the 83 draft the Jets fans wanted Marino and they ended up with KOB. The infamous Jets draft blunders video from years ago capped by the fans chanting "we want sapp!" but left with Brady the TE.

      Side note about that compilation of Jet draft blunders:
      One guy who is in the compilation and doesn’t deserve to be in my opinion is Freeman McNeil in 1981.
      He was admittedly taken over a couple Hall of Fame defensive players, but was probably the best running back out of that draft.
