  • This episode of From the Star Wars Home Video Library focuses upon the VHS Special Letterbox Collector's Edition from 1992, the first VHS widescreen release of the Original Trilogy. (Yes, I know that I for some reason keep saying "16 by 9" when referring to "Standard Definition" size. I think the info is otherwise clear, but it is an error that I correct and comment upon later in the series.)

    “It’s not full screen, Sparky. READ the box.” LOL!

    I'm glad you explained the difference between letter box and widescreen. A lot of people will call the GOUT dvd's in the 2008 releases the original unaltered edition, but they don't understand that it's an adaptation from a letterbox laserdisc from the definitive collection.

    Awww when letter box was super special. Thank God it's standard now.

    QVC sold over 800 copies of this Letterbox Collector’s Edition for $87 back in October 1992. Makes you wonder how many copies of this were produced back then.

    1992: Mom. Something is wrong with my movie. There are black bars at the bottom & the top of the screen.
    Present: Let's watch some widescreen movies with black bars at the top & bottom of the screen.

    This was also my first ‘big’ purchase after I had my first real job. Bought it from Eaton’s downtown Edmonton Alberta. Still have it, unopened and love this thing.

    I bought this in 1992 when it was first released for about $80. Still have it. Mint condition. I think I played them about 2 or 3 times. I also bought the very first JAWS widescreen laser disc around this time even though I didn't own a laser disc player. Still have that too.
    This was at a time when letterboxing was new. I studied cinematography, so I knew what the deal was, but I remember having to explain to everyone that you're actually seeing more of the picture WITH the black bars (the black bars were larger on 4:3 tv's).
    At that time, I was believing letterboxing would not catch on. Thank god it did and for 16:9 TV's which came a bit later.

    I remember receiving the pan-and-scan version of the Trilogy from my brother for Christmas. I returned it to the store and combined my refund with a mall gift certificate from my aunt which was just about enough to buy the letterboxed box set at Suncoast Video (I think that was the store). I never knew or noticed those framing problems. Very interesting.

    The UK got the trilogy in Widescreen in 1991.

    It's nice to see Special Collector's Editions are actually only getting to the COLLECTORS. I say that because in the case of Thomas the Tank Engine on VHS and DVD, (I am a Thomas Home Media collector), some tapes have "Collector's Edition" plastered in gold on the top of the case, and that's the case for every copy of that tape. Examples: 10 Years of Thomas, The Early Years, The Best Of collections. It bugs me for some reason that Collector Editions didn't just get purchased by the collectors, but maybe that's just me.

    I just noticed something odd: These are CBS Fox. I guess they must have released this at the beginning of the year and made the changeover later in the year.

    Hey Nathan, hope you’ve been well my friend. Still enjoying the videos, can I ask what your preferred physical releases are for watching the original trilogy.? And do you prefer the unaltered versions (pre 1997) or the new special editions (1997-present).?

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  Рік тому +1

      I've answered this one . . . a lot (which is fine). So the quick version: I tend to go with what looks and sounds better on a modern system, so I go for the UHD Blu-rays each time. I'd prefer unaltered, but without diving into fan restorations, there's really no option for that, so I by default go with the newest cuts.

      @@ChronoRadio I know it’s a pain to keep answering over and over Lol, but thank you for taking minute to answer, just to clarify, the UHD versions are the more recent versions that came out back in 2019.? The 4K/Blu Ray packages.?

    Hey Nathan I just got a huge surprise! I ordered this off Ebay and when I played A New Hope it worked, NO letterboxing, on my Vizio 2015 smart TV. I made sure it is this correct tape. Have you seen this happen before or has it been always letterboxed?

    • @ChronoRadio

    Did you buy the 1992 Full Screen VHS set from the LucasFilm Company store as well as part of the same purchase as the Letterboxed VHS set and the Sega CD Rebel Assault game?

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  8 років тому

      Yup, though they ended up shipping the RA game later because it kept being delayed. The FS and WS VHS sets came at the same time, along with a regular copy of From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga that I'd picked up so that I'd have the one with and without the silver line across the top from the boxed set.

    is this the theatrical version?

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  6 років тому +1

      Yes, in that it's not the Special Editions from 1997 or a later cut. That said, they did a digital audio remaster back in 1985, and it does have the subtitle, so it's sort of version 1.2, so to speak, whereas the Special Editions would be 2.0.

      As long as Han is the only one who shot, and they play Yub Nub. I am good to go!

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  6 років тому

      Yup, any edition prior to 1997 will be that original version, along with the 2006 bonus discs on that year's DVD releases (but not on the main discs, which are the 2004 editions).

  • @quinnspears3135
    @quinnspears3135 3 роки тому

    Are these the only unaltered versions on VHS released in widescreen in the US.?

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  3 роки тому

      Assuming you don't count the audio remix in 1985 for ANH, and you don't consider the THX remastered versions to be "unaltered," then yes. They're the closest thing to "unaltered widescreen" VHS releases that the U.S. ever had.
