- This episode of From the Star Wars Home Video Library focuses upon the initial 4K (with Blu-ray) physical releases of Episodes I - VII and Rogue One, released shortly before the official release thanks to an early Disney Movie Club delivery.
Note: One thing I failed to notice/mention that I will address in the Skywalker Saga boxed set video is that the labels and menus (but not the video content at all) for TFA were updated to match the others. - Розваги
These new sets are an interesting buy for me, with these being 3-disc sets and having actual on-disc bonus content. I always found it strange that some of the DVD featurettes like "The Beginning" and "From Puppets to Pixels" never found their way to Blu-ray before now, not even in the 2011 Blu-ray box, while others like "Anatomy of a Dewback" did. Great to see that the new release of TFA has the 2016 disc contents, that's one less "necessary" release for me to hunt down.
To be clear in case anyone sees this comment and gets confused: BOTH of the versions of the TFA discs were from 2016. The distinction is Apr. 2016 vs. Nov. 2016 discs.
@@ChronoRadio Thanks for that addendum. Watching this super early in the morning means that I don't think of things like both TFA releases coming out in 2016. Chock it up to a "whoops" lapse.

I believe the last time it was released was on laserdisc in 1995 as part of the collectors set for Japan.
I just don’t know why Lucasfilm seems to want to omit it, because the last time it was omitted would’ve been 2011 because it wasn’t part of the complete saga set (obviously).
If it helps, it was also released in 1995 on VHS in the U.S. It's in packaging with a cover that takes a "slice" from each 1995 film cover and stacks them in a strange way.

I have the VHS definitive collection set too.
Ultimately it’s not that I don’t have access to it it would just be really nice for it to get a HD/1080p scan but if I ultimately have to do it digital rip from the original VHS source so be it because ultimately I wanna back up my VHS collection just so I can be mindful about wear and tear.
Oh and I’ve just seen that the last Jedi at least is getting the 2019 artwork 4K release as the digital bits have just reviewed it.
Still no Solo though.

Will You Get The DVD Versions From Australia Of 2020 Versions Of 1-6 Because Of The new cuts
I don't plan to for all of them, no. However, I do have all three of the Australian versions of ANH on the way, so that I can show how the approach to them in Australia differed from the American approach.

1. I go back and forth, but currently probably Rogue One. I'm all for dark tales of sacrifice and heroism.
2. I've never kept count. I've been watching the OT since recording a couple off of HBO (I think) back in the mid-1980s before getting my first official VHS set in 1993 when in middle school. All the others, even TROS, have been watched numerous times.
Great video, very helpful. I’m too broke for 4K, but I just found a copy of the new anh blu ray disc on eBay for like 5 bucks and bought it because Ma Klounkee. I was able to distinguish it from the old disc(and know that it was a blu ray of the 4K cut) because of this video, so thank you.

Some but not all. I list them all here, but the easiest way to check what they are is to look at the digital releases.
I am pretty excited about these 4k release of the originals (unfortunately altered) version. Because they're Native 4k. Restored from the Original negative. Ran thru 16-bit color.

and you would think that there would be a seperation between prints of the different digital versions

Maclunkey is now on *all* digital releases, unless you managed to download and save a digital copy you purchased before late 2019. Otherwise, all digital platforms (iTunes, Vudu, Movies Anywhere, etc.) now only have the 2019 copies, which replaced the 2015 copies. It doesn't matter how they are bundled, since they all reference the same source file.
This is one of the two major dangers inherent in digital content: First, you run the risk that content will vanish entirely at some point, and, second, they are able to replace files with updated files at any time, which can wipe out a previous cut of a film. As of now, the 2015 digital cut is not available officially anywhere at all.

also weirdly they didn't change the movies that they air on tnt to the 2019 versions its still the truncated fan fares that they air

Where did you get those protect cases for the Steelbook?, I didn't open my Steelbook Blu-rays because I don't want scratches on the paint, and I was thinking in some kind of protect like those you have.

Does the digital code of The Force Awakens in this set include the bonus from the 3D version back in late 2016?
I can't check to be sure because I already had that one, but I'm almost positive it does, because the digital library of extras should now mirror the physical one.
also with those newer ones do they have the maclunkey scene on a new hope ?

@@JFL1988 yes, Maklunky is in it. I must be the only fan ok with the change. We'll never get the original scene so this is the next best thing. Maklunky fixes it.
MeanMrMustard1 the next best thing after the original was the edit we had just before this one, where they both fired at the same time. Regardless of what maclunkey means, the face that it cuts back to Greedo saying anything before they fire breaks up the pacing of the scene. Not to mention the word “maclunkey” sounds silly and like it doesn’t belong. Mind you, I didn’t grow up in the 70s and I’ve grown up watching the various special editions, so it’s not like I’m just nostalgic and hate anything new. I actually think lots of changes that were made are great changes (Palpatine in Empire would be one example), but this one is really the first one that has just annoyed me to no end. I think it’s terrible

For these 4K "Ultimate Collector's Editions" and the Skywalker Saga 4K set, yes. For the similarly-packaged Blu-ray releases from back in September that are still on store shelves? No.
Can you confirm if the Lucas movies are cropped top and bottom (due to the new aspect ratio)?
I'd have to do a side by side comparison. If you have Disney+, you'll be able to see on there, though. It's the same 2019 cuts on these as on D+.
I mean if you sell the older sets that you have of say the complete saga set will they be on the Skywalker saga ?

Hi, Nate. Long time watcher, first time commenting. First off, I hope you & your family are doing well & staying safe. My question isn't related to this video so apologies for that, but do you think asp when Disney puts there SW D+ shows on home video they'll be on 4K right out the gate?
I doubt it. It's possible, but we haven't seen that with any Disney+ original content yet. If they follow the practice they've used for the latter seasons of other streaming-first shows (MCU, for example), we may not get a release at all, and if they follow the pattern for their typical TV shows, we may only get a DVD release like with Resistance. Our only real hope is that Mandalorian is so well-regarded that they put out a 4K version, but I'm not hopeful.

I saw a video somewhere on UA-cam that said the Disney + versions of 4, 5 and 6 really did very little with HDR (specifically that they never got much above 300-400 nits). Are the 4K discs of the OT as good in terms of HDR as the PT and TFA, or are they exactly the same as the Disney + versions (but obviously less compressed and better audio)?
That's what I been wondering. If the HDR on the disc are better than Disney plus version, then I'll get it. Hope we get an update.

The Digital Bits breaks this down pretty well. My eyesight for HDR isn't strong enough to distinguish between the two if there are any differences in HDR usage.
The September 2019 Disc I Got For a New hope Still plays 2011 And Are All The Blu-ray With Features Films From 1-6 Play The Same as What was In The 2011 Blu-Ray
Yes, the Sept. 2019 releases all include the 2011 cuts, not the 2019 cuts, as a I spent the first chunk of the video clarifying. These are newly-authored Blu-rays with the 2019 cuts, new menus, and the two commentaries carried over from the 2011 - 2017 releases. Otherwise, the bonus discs (OT, PT, and doc/spoofs from the Complete Saga) are gone, and only a few things from those have made the jump to an individual film's bonus disc.

From the U.S., yes. From other regions, just whatever happens to strike my interest or provide an interesting comparison piece. For the Disney era stuff, I've been picking up each release from the UK, South Korea, and a couple each time from Japan.
I can't wait to pick these up this week in Australia or wait to the complete saga collection on 4K comes out in may for us and the special features should be great to watch on blu ray of all 9 movies great new video Nathan I hope to pick up all of them
I don't know if you guys are lucky or not. On the one hand, you get TLJ and Solo in new individual releases that match the others. On the other hand, you're getting the Blu-ray and DVD-only versions alongside these, which adds another 20 releases to this giant blitz of products in Australia.

So I have the complete saga Blu Ray from a long time ago then I got vhs releases now I also own all the September 2019 releases but I want the bonus discs and it doesn't have bonus disks so should I buy them in 4k I just want to know what you think
William Dakota If you want the bonus features for the current release (which are all stuff that was either released physically or digitally already), you would need each individual release or the Skywalker Saga set. If you don’t care if digital or physical, the digital copies from the September releases have those features already digitally.

I wish they didn't change the Menu Music for the 2020 TFA Discs. Not that I dislike Rey's Theme, it's just that I prefer the Old Menu Music and the First 6 still have the same Music as their Old Release.

I do plan on altering the text on the back of the book to include something along the lines of the wording of the 1995 / 1997 trailers. “Read it again... for the first time... in color” or some such.

Yes and no. This is the first time the Conversations and Discovery Bonus Features have appeared on any physical media. But the rest of the legacy features have been available on a variety of Star Wars Blu Rays and DVDs.
Michael McBride nailed it. The only stuff that was digital only is the stuff that is outside of the "Legacy Content" label on each disc, then everything in that Legacy section is stuff from previous releases. So Conversations, Discoveries from Inside, Art of AOTC, etc. were digital-only until now.

Fingers crossed the new blu rays for I-VIII are the same in the UK blu-ray only release of the Saga. Also wondering if the Target TRoS is worth getting if I’m gonna get that UK set just to miss out on that one bonus feature about the ships
SoLinkSmash we are not getting individual releases for the 4K day and date with the box set.
It’s just another thing we have to deal with in the UK when dealing with Disney and 4K.
I know this all too well as somebody who’s been collecting the MCU movies and wanting a full UK set as the back catalogue is finally finished by March 30 when guardians of the Galaxy volume one and Ant Man get released.
It completely sucks and as a collective I’ve been stressed with it but it is what it is.

There's definitely some question as to what you'll see in the UK BD-only set, since the UK never had those equivalents to our Sept. 2019 releases (and still aren't getting them, it seems). In product images for the BD set, though, it shows the new disc labels with the title at the top, and the bonus feature discs are included, so it would be rather bizarre if the cuts weren't 2019 for that set. You're probably pretty safe with that one.
Out of curiosity, why not import 4K releases from the U.S., especially with the exchange rate now favoring the UK quite a bit? Are you just wanting a single region's packaging?

Two things nathen one does the episode one have the original sound track from the Japanese laserdisc where the DVD was terrible also 4K wise I have team negative one starwars and return of the Jedi couldn't stand the constant changes tell me what you think hope you as and the family stay healthy

What do you mean by "my set?" The bonus features here aren't exactly the same as in previous cases. It's a mixture from various releases, just all old stuff.

You didn't watch the episode, did you? Yes, both the 4K and BD copies in the 4K/BD packs have the 2019 cuts, but if you get a BD-only or DVD-only copy, those contain the 2011 cut.

could you show us how the blu ray menus look like?
I won't be for these, but they are very similar in style to TLJ in that it's just a new collage style image for the film, in this case with a small corner for video to play. Not very stylish really compared to the original Blu-ray menus.
Hi Nathan! Are there any Star Wars films that you dislike?
I'm not as fond of the TCW film (if that counts), TPM, or AOTC as I am of the others for sure. Not disliking so much as just consider them more "meh" and less likely to rewatch them when I just want a quick Star Wars fix.
I think I might pass on these. There's not enough new stuff to justify a purchase for me since I have the old Blu-rays and can watch them in 4K on Disney+.
Yup. I'm not sure whether we should be glad that there's nothing truly new so that we can avoid these and not end up missing content, or if it's totally asinine that these new releases and boxed set are all old stuff except the film cuts. Still, for me it's worthwhile so that I'm not running into any connectivity issues when trying to play 4K content. Nice and smooth.

Joe Henry If you’re talking about specifically from the new US releases, you won’t be able to get Solo. It’s release from 2018 can still be found, but it won’t have a new release in matching packaging until a while from now.

Wow. That’s a lot of green. I managed to get a price match from Walmart for $24.96 for each (ep 4-6) 4K and then showed my receipt to Target customer service for further price matching on the rest in addition to their current sale (Buy 2 Get 1 Free ; online code: B2GET1)) this week (good from Sunday, 4/5- Saturday, 4/11) to fill out the remainder of the 4Ks (so I now have all 11 films on 4K for under $160). Happy bargain hunting.

Did you watch the video? I repeatedly point out that these are the 2019 Disney+ cuts, so they are the newest iteration of the films, not the original cuts.

Ghost Sidios I’ve heard a lot about this particular documentary, but I’ve never actually seen it. I could watch it on Disney+; do you think it’s worth it? What it is about?
It's a "making of" that is mostly for the original film, but it's quite good. Definitely watch the full version on the 2004 DVD set or on Disney+ (which I'm assuming is the full version). There was a version aired on A&E (and available on VHS and DVD screners) that was a TV edit that had to cut some stuff for time.
The original version of Empire of dreams is on the 2004 dvd. The version on Disnee plus is “edited from it’s original release”. They remastered the clips from the movies with the dvd/Blu-ray master from 2004 with messed up colors (which is strange because the 4K versions came out the same day). The actual interviews do look way better in HD on the Disnee plus version. I’m not exactly sure what else was changed
Will all star wars come out on 4k Steelbooks?
Maybe eventually, but nothing has been announced yet for I - VII or Rogue One. TLJ, TROS, and Solo all already have 4K Steelbooks.
In terms of the deleted scenes that they've included in the legacy content, what kind of deleted scenes are we talking about?
They're all ones previously released on Blu-ray and via the digital releases. Nothing new.

Already did. All 20 of the Sept. 2019 reissues, plus all 9 of the Oct. - Nov. 2019 Walmart exclusives from that run.
Individuals vs the Saga edition . Bonus the same?
Assuming you are willing to wait for an individual reissue of TLJ with updated discs, the bonus content is the same. If not, bear in mind that both TLJ discs have been reauthored to now include the score only version of the audio track on the film Blu-ray and "Meet the Porgs" (previously a Target on-DVD exclusive) on the bonus disc.

I’m going to get the uk blu ray box set because it is the best value.
I guess that depends on perspective. You will have the 2019 cuts, but you wouldn't have any of them as physical 4K copies, nor would you be getting a digital copy free for each one, since that's not a thing in the UK. It looks, though, like they should be the 2019 cuts, thankfully, based on the product images having the updated labels with the title at the top instead of the bottom.

The Last Jedi 4K will be re-issued in the US with the updated packaging.
The 4K disc has been re-authored without Dolby Vision (to match the rest) and the Blu-ray has added previous exclusives (Meet The Porgs and the Score Only Track.)

I've seen that article as well, but if I recall correctly, TDB is reviewing based on the Skywalker Saga set discs. There isn't anywhere at this point, not even DMC, that actually has any evidence that there's a TLJ or Solo 4K reissue coming in that kind of packaging in the U.S. Even the Amazon link in the TDB article goes to the previous version, not a new version. I'll believe it when I see it. I'd love to be wrong, but for Mar. 31, I have seen nothing to indicate that it's actually happening for either of those films.

And yet, Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed is STILL nowhere to be found as well as Empire Of Dreams. I mean if these releases are including all the legacy content why not those two? Those need to be preserved.
These are not meant to include "all the legacy content." That's just what they are calling a section of the even older materials like with the digital release. For what it's worth, if hunting a copy of The Legacy Revealed, there are at least three or more different screener versions out there (though I'd suggest hunting an Emmy or review screener, not the initial preview screener, so that you have a finished version of the special). But yes, it's a shame that one hasn't ever been released to retail or as a bonus feature.

Most of the 4K discs cover art I don’t have a problem with. Even though I think they should’ve stuck with the 2004-2008 original poster art on the discs having said that The scenes they showed are OK with the exception of one. The return of the Jedi 4K disc is horrible. They should’ve chose a different image instead of Han Solo about to be cooked

The physical distrubution rights for that one might still be with Warner. If so, it would be up to them, rather than Disney.

I'm definitely going to pick up the new The Last Jedi release for that Isolated Score music track! Probably will pick up the 4K TFA pack so I have all the bonus features together, and the Target TROS release.
Not sure what region you are in, but if the US, TLJ is not getting a separate 4K release this time here. The only way to get that new TLJ disc here is in the Skywalker Saga set at Best Buy.

I don't have a 4K player or 4K TV, so the fact that I have to get the 4K editions to get the blu-ray bonus features discs sounds like a pain in the wallet for me :/
You'll get a 4k TV and player in the future. Another few years and they'll be dirt cheap.
It’s good future-proofing. The 4K ones come with a Blu-Ray disc so you’ll be able to watch them right away, and you‘ll probably end up getting a 4K tv and a 4K player in the future, and then you’ll be able to watch your 4K discs. But yeah, I get that it’s annoying
I had no idea how much 4k TVs cost when I made that comment. When I went to Target to get my copy of TROS, I checked the TVs and was surprised that many are pretty cheap. I'm tempted to get one soon.

Yup. It's the only one of the new 4K U.S. releases that isn't in the Skywalker Saga set, so it's the most purchased standalone one, as expected.
I'm not even gonna bother with the Skywalker saga set... I'll wait until they offer a 4k set that isn't so big and bulky and will fit nicely on my shelf.

LIAR!!!!! But I own that bootleg set and it’s really good so I ain’t even that ticked off, with 1-6 and the theatrical cuts of 4-6+bonus discs for 1-3. It’s how I watched the Star Wars saga.
I hope they release the last jedi and the rise of skywalker in 4K to match the other seven movies you just reviewed, to keep the same uniformity.
At the very least they should have offered them to buy from the Disney site store or make them exclusive at some place for those of us wanting matching sets.
