    This video actually made me happy about my selection! I pre-ordered the Target exclusive edition, I'll admit that I wasn't expecting the actual case to be a cardboard slip disk case, but I really liked the art selection of the portrait-posters disks carriers, didn't expected that the target exclusive content was going to be digitally streamed, I thought the exclusive content was going to arrive in a seperated disk. But overall, I'm very happy with my selection. But thank you Nathan for displaying the contents of each store exclusive versions, I really liked seeing all of them in this video.

    I had hoped that the cover style would have matched the old trilogy DVDs. Oh well, at least there's 50 chapters in scene select like always.

    First, I'm honestly amazed at how in-depth your videos about the releases are! I've finally found a great source for this information!
    Second: I'm appalled at how we are creating a situation where it's "advantageous" to have many different accounts, and accounts to link accounts. Meanwhile here I am enjoying my 20MB/s+ bitrate bluray rip and am able to transcode it for different mediums. Yes, I understand that many people don't have that knowledge to rip DVDs/Blurays, but I cannot help but find this situation to be nonsensical. It is cool given the situation, but is artificial in nature in my opinion.
    But that isn't against your video! :D Love it!

    Many thanks Nathan for this extremely informative video. It is very much appreciated that you use your own time and money to compare all U.S Force Awakens home video releases. I have chosen to buy the Target exclusive with the bonus streaming content.
    I use my Chromecast and Disney movie app to watch them on my HDTV. I used my HDMI input button to switch and then watch the rest of the bonus content from my Blu-ray Player. I do prefer owning physical copies even though I have found by myself using the Disney movie app to stream Force awakens regular bonus content on my TV as well.

    Hello Nathan, just recently found out this channel and love every bit of the Home Video LIbrary. Now in Latin America (which uses the same discs from North American releases in most of the cases, just one or two changes in the available languages and subtitles) the Force Awakens sadly has the least complete release of all the movies so far. Only two variants were released here in Guatemala (which was used for the backgrounds and exterior shots of Yavin IV in the original movie): Stand Alone Blu-Ray (no slipcover) and stand alone DVD (DVD same as the one you show here). The thing is, the Blu-ray lacks the bonus material disc, so you only get the movie with no bonus features and the case is blue instead of black. And no plans of a re-release in place, so only way to get the bonus material at least for us would be importing (which sucks due to the currency exchange rate we have with the US).

    My Amazon copy had the stacking-type package rather than the one with the little arm thing inside it, so that was not part of the Wal-Mart Exclusive packaging, probably just a random thing, some copies have it one way, some have it the other.

    Nice video. I've got "The Force Awakens" a few months back when my uncle gave me this one and I haven't watched it until it recently came out on Blu-Ray and digital platforms. I watched the film and the quality wasn't that good since it was shot from a theater using a webcam that someone was using in the theater and I knew that someone used a webcam to captured the entire movie and the worst thing about the copy was the LucasFilm logo is missing and the ending credits was cut out, but it had the opening crawl which was in Spanish. WTF???? This must be a bootleg, and it was illegal. If anyone there who has bootlegs of "The Force Awakens", stay away from BitTorrent sites, go to iTunes or Disney Movies Anywhere and download the movie. I will never watch the bootleg copy of "The Force Awakens" ever again, unless I can get a digital copy of the movie which has better quality than the bootleg one.

    Thanks for this in-depth overview of all the US releases! I've decided to pick up the regular Blur Ray edition, and the Steelbook - it's totally stupid that it doesn't quite match, but it's close enough for me to want to get it anyway. Probably worth mentioning, my friend got it from Amazon and it's the "stacked" version of the black Blu Ray case, despite being a normal edition.

    • @ChronoRadio

      +Naminski Nguyen No, neither.
      For the 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment logo, that is obvious: 20th Cen. Fox has nothing to do with The Force Awakens. They only have rights to distribute TPM, AOTC, ROTS, ANH, ESB, and ROTJ at the moment.
      I was surprised by the lack of THX info, but that would just mean a different form of mastering.

    I preordered mine via Amazon. It came with the "Standard" slip cover, and the "Standard" black blu-ray case... but mine isn't a page turning case. It's the STACK CASE like shown in the Walmart packaging. VERY DISAPPOINTED in that. I don't like stacking my discs so now I am torn between just dealing with it, or purchasing a whole new one in hopes to get the flip page blu-ray case!

    From what I understand Fox has permanent rights to A New Hope but besides that has physical distribution rights to the other films until 2020. Disney has digital distribution rights to all but A new hope. That's why the steelbooks don't match and the digital collection has different fanfare while A New Hope has the original and doesn't show up on Disney Movies anywhere. I just discover your channel and it is really helpful to my Collecting.

    Do you have a box set of Harmys Despecialized Trilogy? I think I see something like that at the farthest to the right on the shelf above the BB8's. Also, I was wondering if you have experienced any problems with the 2006 OT Unaltered, things like motion smearing or bad colour? I think harmys said something like that when they talked about those 2006 DVD's, and I believe they said those problems are for big and wide TVs.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  7 років тому

      I don't have the Despecialized fan recreations in physical form except for an earlier version of ANH. I do have newer ones as digital files, though.
      I've not run into those issues with the 2006 DVDs, but to be fair, I haven't watched the 2006 bonus disc films much because I can't stand watching something letterboxed on a widescreen TV that can't zoom in.

      Far right boxed set on the shelf above BB-8... That's two boxed items together (one pushed back to the back of the shelf and one right in front of it) that are the fullscreen trilogy sets from 1990 and 1992, the very first boxed set available and its reissue from two years later.

      You've missed the whole "collecting" aspect of this, it would seem... Of cousre purchasing the DVD isn't "needed" if you're just looking for that disc, but by the same token, neither are the various store variants either. A U.S. buyer could've just bought the Target version and been done with it for this initial TFA release. They'd have all the video content without needing to buy anything else. But that's typically not the point of collecting.

  • @satyendrandonibanerjee8682
    @satyendrandonibanerjee8682 6 років тому

    Hey Nathan, several months ago I asked you a question about whether or not you thought if they would put out a box set of 9 films once episode 9 would hit home video and your response was well to put it bluntly not likely due to the legalities that both Fox and Disney have with a new hope. Now that Disney has acquired Fox what is your opinion now on whether or not them putting out of box set of all 9 films is going to happen ? Do you think they're going to put on a box out with all 9 films or is this just more wishful thinking for a lot of us fans ?

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  6 років тому

      So, just to start off, we should make sure what's happening is clear for those not following it closely and reading the comments section here. Disney has not acquired Fox. What's happening is that Disney is attempting to purchase Fox's entertainment assets from them, but that process is not a done deal yet, since it all awaits the approval of U.S. federal regulators. It's probably going to happen, but it hasn't happened yet, nor is Disney actually purchasing Fox. The most recet hiccups in the process are the whole issue of bidding over Sky in Europe and anti-trust concerns that will be either excited once again or quelled by how the Time-Warner acquisition by AT&T pans out. (The Department of Justice is trying to block that one on anti-trust grounds, and since Trump has been glowing about Disney/Fox but not AT&T/Time-Warner, seemingly due to CNN's place in the latter, there are now also suits being launched over that different treatment, etc. It's a bit of a mess.)
      So, if it does happen as they're intending, then I'd expect that we'll see numerous boxed sets in the coming years, perhaps not even always bothering to give us sets that really make sense, such as when 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment put out the Saga DVD Pack and Saga Video Pack or how LEGO Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles was handled. I'd expect the likelihood of frequent smll boxed sets and less frequent large boxed sets to package the films in whatever means they can to get the most out of the franchise. I'd hope they'd be a bit more on the subtle side, like how they've handled the Marvel Cinematic Universe films in various releases, but I could see a floodgate opening on Star Wars releases for a while, given how little we've been able to see Walt Disney Home Video and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment coordinate in the past (i.e. just the one time with the Walmart exclusives a few months ago).

    My original intent was to get both the Steelbook and Target exclusive. I was gonna keep the steelbook sealed and just open the Target one. But now that I know the Target exclusive one is just an online thing for the bonus material, and the packaging in my opinion isn't all that good,(Besides the artwork) I'll probably just stick with the Steelbook. It's also always bothered me how the Disney Blu Ray releases always get all the Bonus Features, they give the DVD nothing. Which sucks for me, Because I don't have a Blu Ray player :/ DVDs deserve love too.

    • @ericlui7746
      @ericlui7746 8 років тому

      I agree. Disney is somewhat "greedy," when it comes to special features, especially they own Lucasfilm and Marvel. Like Marvel and regular DVD releases of Disney movies, they always offer some special features. I don't know why they didn't do the same for 'The Force Awakens.' (2015). Like the previous 'Star Wars' DVDs, they should've add some of the bonus features, from the Blu-Ray/DVD+Digital HD combo packs, into the DVDs. So, that the Blu-Rays can't hog all the glory!!!! Stupid and Disappointed!!!!

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  8 років тому

      +Eric Lui Well, let's be clear here: Since 2013, no Star Wars DVDs for live action films have had special features, and even in the case of the 2013 BD/DVD combo packs, the only special features even on those Blu-Rays were commentaries. Since 2011, the only bonus features (other than commentaries) for Star Wars live action films have been in HD on separate Blu-Ray discs that have the space to actually hold those bonus features.
      The same argument could've been made a decade or more ago for VHS. "Why does DVD get all the special features? Why don't we just get a separate VHS tape for all the special features?"
      DVD is no longer the primary format for home viewing in the U.S. market, so it doesn't get the bonus features.

    Hey Nathan, how do I tell if the Star Wars VHS is from 1984, 1986, or 1987? I want the 1st editions of each film. So far I've seen grey VHS tabs, black VHS tabs, and black VHS tabs with a bar code sticker on the bottom. Which is the earliest version?

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  8 років тому

      +Christopher Henderson From what I can tell, the only way to differentiate is by the actual contents of the cassette: no trailer, trailer at the end, or trailer at the beginning. (I'd have to look again as to which of the latter two is which.) I've never found any way of being able to tell by looking at the packaging or tape labeling.

    • @christopherhenderson1123
      @christopherhenderson1123 8 років тому

      +Christopher Henderson I'm not talking about the 1982 or elusive 1983 ones either. I've seen standard VHS tapes with grey tabs in a standard 1984/1986/1987 slip case. If I had to guess, the grey tab one would be the first edition as it's the most similar to the 1983 tape with the grey tabs as well, yet not the exact same tape. Also, since I collect factory sealed tapes, I can't just figure it out by popping it into the player and checking the trailer-film order.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  8 років тому

      +Nathan Butler Either way, though, for ANH, the first edition isn't 1984 anyway, it's 1982. ESB is 1984, and ROTJ is 1986.

    • @christopherhenderson1123
      @christopherhenderson1123 8 років тому

      +Nathan Butler By 1st edition, I mean the first of the tapes with a red triangular banner in the corners with Hi-Fi Stereo Digitally Mastered (i.e. not the ultra-rare 1982, or the even rarer 1983 one with the linear banner).

    • @christopherhenderson1123
      @christopherhenderson1123 8 років тому

      +Nathan Butler Let me just give you a run-down of my situation. I have an factory-sealed ANH VHS with a grey tab on the bottom and no bar code sticker from what I presume to be 1984 or 1986 as the the white background on the slip case is noticeably more yellow than the others. I also have ESB and ROTJ factory-sealed with the circular, gold 5 star stickers and the blue, rectangular first 10 years stickers. These two have much less faded colors and a clear, non-yellowed background as well as black tabs and HAS a bar code sticker.
      From what I can gather based on the tapes I have. The grey tabs must be from 1984 or 1986 (but I still don't know which exact year or whether each year had a different design or they're both the same) and the black tabs with bar code must be from 1987. But there's still the oddball of the black tabs and NO bar code that baffles me.

    You know they're making 2 more movies and possibly 10-12 right? That means 5 more movies that will probably have the same steel book packaging, so i don't understand why you're so heated about it. Yeah, sure right now TFA doesn't match the other ones. But once the other ones come out you'll have 6 of the first kind of steel books and 6 of the new kind so it'll look better on the shelf. It's not like you're gonna have 6 of the first steel books and one that doesn't match.

      Nah. I've never really been interested in the soundtracks. I have a few, including the original LP, but I don't really pay much attention to them. The only one I've really cared to seek out was the ROTS one that had the Musical Journey DVD with it.

      Nathan Butler it just said bonus disc on the ad I saw before a youtube video. I also hate the discs stacking on each other. and no commentaries AT ALL for the film? yeah that's stupid. how many different commentaries does a new hope have by now? And this has none?

      Nathan Butler people got pissed it wasn't on a disc like they said, I bought Walmart thinking it was a disc until I saw this video. very deceptive choice of words and bad casing, I also hate the sleeve cardboard cases. makes the discs scratched up a bit. nice video, I feel cheated though by this release.

      +Eddy From Ed Edd n' Eddy Well, I mean, it is a disc, but only in terms of the game. People would have to know what "Connexions" is in order to have any idea what they were getting. I only knew from looking it up when they announced it with that odd spelling. I figured it was something strange . . . and it was even more disappointing than I expected.

    Do you think we will ever get a box set of the ENTIRE saga once episodes VIII and IX come out on home video with all the of them matching and with the fox fanfare of the first six films ?

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  6 років тому

      So, that's sort of two questions, but both answers are "it depends on..."
      20th Century Fox has the distribution rights to ANH forever on all media (physical, digital, etc.). They have the physical (but not digital) distribution rights to TPM, AOTC, ROTS, ESB, and ROTJ until the current agreement ends in 2020.
      Meanwhile, Disney has all distribution rights to TFA, Rogue One, and the other new films, which would eventually include TLJ and Episode IX.
      Episode IX is scheduled for May 2019, which would likely mean a home video release in late 2019. If they were to try to do a boxed set at that point, either 20th Century Fox would have to sell the Ep. 1 - 6 rights back to Disney for it to happen, or Walt Disney Company and 20th Century Fox would have to come to a deal that would make such a release a combined effort with split profits of some kind. That seems unlikely at this point.
      Give it another year or two, say into 2021, and the distribution rights for TPM, AOTC, ROTS, ESB, and ROTJ will have reverted to Disney's control. Still, though, they wouldn't have the distribution rights for ANH, so there would have to either be a deal between the two companies to release it together, or 20th Century Fox would have to sell the ANH rights back to Disney. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to have such a boxed set.
      We wouldn't ever see the 20th Century Fox fanfare on any films beyond Ep. 1 - 6 because they simply never had them (TFA, Rogue One, etc.). Whether or not the fanfare appears on Ep. 1 - 6 depends on whether 20th Century Fox has the physical distribution rights to the film at that time. If they sell those rights back to Disney, expect the fanfares to be gone. If they make some kind of distribution deal, you can expect that it will be on the ones still controlled by 20th Century Fox but not on those controlled by Walt Disney Company.
      That, for example, is why when the films were released digitally for the first time, which is a format 20th Century Fox only controls for ANH, we saw ANH with the fanfare but no fanfare on the other films. That's also why you can get all six of those films through places like iTunes, but Disney Movies Anywhere does not offer ANH at all.
      It's the distribution rights that make all the difference in the scenario. It's similar to the way film rights work for Spider-Man, and how Walt Disney Company and Sony had to come to an agreement in order for Spider-Man (controlled by Sony) to show up in any Marvel Cinematic Universe films (controlled by Disney). It ended up with a deal where Spidey gets to be in MCU films, yet the joint effort Spider-Man: Homecoming had all profits go to Sony, rather than Disney.

    • @satyendrandonibanerjee8682
      @satyendrandonibanerjee8682 6 років тому

      Well here's hoping they come to deal, so that we can have all the films in one box set so the complete saga can truly be on blu ray, cause right now it seems to me like it is a complete mess.
