Actually they used the UK PAL masters, which are identical to the US ones, just mastered in PAL, so better colours and a bit higher resolution. They then scanned the German opening crawls from some theatrical material and stretched it to 4:3. They got the Greedo scene in Ep4 wihout subs and made bad wrong German subtitles to it. They used this same bad mix in all GermnanFullscreen releases between 1982-1994. I don't remember the subs for Jabba in Ep6 for the Fullscreen version, but I know for a later indiviual Widescreen release of all 3, I think it was in 1992 or 1993, they also used a UK masters, but this time the opening crawls and the Greedo scene were from a very bad dirty copy, with the same wrong subs for Greedo, and the picture was a bit zoomed and cropped (only for the crawls and the Greedo scene). For Jabba in Ep6 the widescreen version hided the English subs with black boxes, in which they added the German subs. The orignal unaltered German theatrical versions in good quality were only abvailable on TV on Sat1 and Pro7 and were first shown in 1990, I think the Special Editions from 1997 aired first in 2000 on German TV. Those TV-versions were official telecine from the original German 35mm films, with original German subs for Greedo and Jabba and German localised end credits for Ep4 (for the other two they stayed in English), but zoomed to 1.85:1 (little bit wider than 16:9 / 1.78:1), of course in a 4:3 letterbox. So most of the times they showed that Telecine on TV, but sometimes they also showed the 4:3 Fullscreen CBS mixed versions.

In the 90ies they were the home of science-fiction in Germany and as far as I know, did several of these box sets for Star Wars and also for Star Trek. One easteregg about the old german releases: In the thrash compactor scene you can hear additional music by John Williams not present in most languages (even english). The german releases were always the original theatrical version (including original crawl) up till the remastered versions in 1995. On the Fox Fanfare: Somewhere in the 90ies it got lost. On my german laserdisc from 1982 it’s present, on the laserdiscs from 1993 not, but reinstated again after the overhaul in 1995.
The titles on the spines of things going the opposite way compared to what we're used to in North America is a European thing, not just German. Being in Quebec, my bookcases at home contain many English *and French books, and you can always tell the French ones by the writing on their spines going the opposite way. And they do this not just for French from France books, but also Quebec French-language ones.

Toy stores were full of the merch, and had toys dating back to 1978, unlike our stores where the discontinued stuff was nowhere to be found. My Star Destroyer playset came in a Palitoy box! As we were moving back to the States, The Last 17 hit toy store shelves without coins on tri-logo cards. That brings me to the name change. When Jedi hit theaters, the "Krieg Der Sterne" pre-title was replaced with "Star Wars", which I thought was odd. This branding change from "Krieg" to "Wars" was also present on the German-translated (and, imo, superior-quality presentation) of the Marvel Comics. While I have no actual evidence of the reason why, I can only guess that the reason must have been merchandising. Other than the comics, hardly any Star Wars merch found in Germany was actually written in German. I was often providing translations for my friends with the blurbs on the boxes of their Palitoy Star Wars toys. All of them were branded "Star Wars", with the exception of one of the three logos on the tri-logo packages, and none of them were in German, either. Furthermore, on all advertising for "Rückkher Der Jedi-Ritter", the logo has "Star Wars", just like all the english-language versions, but in the opening crawl, it was still "Krieg Der Sterne". For some reason, I was far more concerned with this than my german Star Wars-obsessed friends, who couldn't have cared any less.
As someone not used to dubbing it must have been strange seeing all those american movies and tv series in another language. What did you think of the german dub of Star Wars back then? Seems like you saw the entire trilogy in german and english.
@5HokageUzumakiNaruto I found it an extremely valuable tool in learning the language. I had every line memorized in English, before relocating to Germany, so hearing these lines I knew so well spoken in German was a big help.
