      4 years late, but I recently got the australian box set with the same artwork on the discs. How did I get it? Via Ebay? No, I got it from my uncle, who was working at the local dump, and found it out of pure luck. How it got from Australia to Canada is beyond me, now I get to watch the films on Blu-Ray in crispy THX sound.

    I am glad to see that the 2015 reissue package of this Blu-ray release has a more standard packaging as oppose to the 2011 release, but when I purchased the one back in 2011, I ended up purchasing the Japanese edition from HMV Japan website, because the packaging on that was actually better, and the discs had individual artwork on them, each depicting a different character from all six movies, similar to the new steelbook cases that they just released on November 10, 2015. I paid about almost 200 dollars including shipping express mail international from Japan to the US, although I got on sale due to the fact that I preorder it early from there, but at the time it was worth it because the 2011 North American packaging had turned me off, because I was afraid of it getting scratched. The only time I purchased the US version was back around Christmas 2013, but it was for my friend's ex-boyfriend, because she originally wanted me to bring my box set with me so that he could borrow it to watch, but because of it being Japanese I will not loan it out to anyone. So I bought it for him at a Best Buy, and at the time when I purchased it from there, it was the only copy they had left on the shelves, even the 2013 versions of both were sold out, and I think it was $89.99 plus tax, marked down from $109.99. She originally tried to purchase one from an FYE store, only to have some idiot tell her that because Disney took over the franchise when it purchased Lucas Film, that the Star Wars Blu-ray releases from 20th Century Fox had been discontinued, and she believed it because she is not really a Star Wars fan. It is good thing that she did not purchase it from FYE, because they had it marked up to about $149.99 and it was the first place that I looked before I decided to look for it at Best Buy.

    Hey loved your video. I bought the Vader version instead of the Anakin version of the complete saga. But a few points i want to make as a citizen of the UK:
    - The Vader version is actually £10 cheaper than the Anakin version which is weird as it's a newer release but also as you pointed out, had less fancy box designing
    - In my Vader version, the discs all have a picture of a Star Wars character on each one (probably UK exclusive i'm not sure)
    - The subtitle problem you mentioned i didn't encounter on my version. I didn't have to worry about setting the subtitles as when a different alien language was spoke they were already printed on the film. Again, maybe a UK version exclusive
    Thanks for the video, i really hoped the Vader version was the same as the Anakin one as it was cheaper and i was worried it wouldn't include EVERYTHING. But it did thank the maker! 😊

      I have the 2011 Japanese version of this boxset, and all nine discs have the exact same artwork of the characters that are featured as the U.K. version, the only thing that would be different is where as the U.K. versions have the British rating system printed on each disc, the Japanese versions do not have that but do feature Japanese writing on each disc to let the user know that it is exactly that, so I would say it is more of international version or the non North American release. Probably the reason that the original 2011 North American release was made and packaged like it was including discs with just a generic art or lack there of, was more for economic reasons, because making it more like the international version would have made the set too expensive for the average US consumer. Probably why the 2015 repackaged U.K. version is cheaper than the 2011 U.K. version. The Japanese version has a suggested retail price of ¥16,500 without sales tax (with sales tax being about 8% in Japan, the price is ¥17,820). I bought mine from Japan at www.hmv.co.jp back in 2011 by reserving a copy of it a few months in advance and with shipping I only paid ¥14,415 (¥12,375 + ¥2,040 for shipping since anything shipped overseas by HMV Japan is sent Express Mail International) which at the time was roughly equivalent to about 188 US dollars or £116. At today's rate for December 5, 2018 roughly about 128 US dollars or £100.

    Very great and thorough review, Nathan. Subscribed and liked. The 2011 packaging feels more meaningful to me and I'm a fan of the prequel movies so the 2011 version is better for me. Blu-ray discs are have a coating on them to be more scratch-resistant than DVDs so I'm not worried about scratching the discs. I'm now waiting for the 4K versions now that a lot of movie studios have announced their 4K releases for 2016. I can only Imagine what The Force Awakens will look like in 4K.

    Thanks for making this video. Did your slipcase have one of those thick black security stickers inside of it (I’m assuming it’s for security)? I bought mine a few days ago at Best Buy and I’m wondering if the sticker will eventually dent the case somewhat. I don’t want to try to remove it because I’m afraid it’ll damage the case. I was wondering if all Complete Saga slipcases have this sticker.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 7 років тому +1

      The original theatrical films are *not* on this release. All discs are Blu-rays, which are identical to the 2011 Complete Saga set. If anyone is describing a version of this set that supposedly has the original theatrical cuts of any film in it, they are not deescribing the legitimate release. They are describing the most common Star Wars bootleg that exists right now. See this video: ua-cam.com/video/DsucnNhrjXw/v-deo.html

      Ok thank you for responding! Someone on Amazon said it had at least episode 4 theatrical on the bonus disc but they also said there are 12 discs in the set which is not true so I was looking for someone who had the actual set on youtube. After 8 and 9 come out they should give us a blu ray set with all 9 movies in theatrical and the updated/special editions and some bonus features. That way everyone would be happy. fingers crossed!

    • @AndrewChapman

      That would be great. There are those who want the theatrical versions on Blu-ray because they hate the Special Editions and there are those who would like to have the pleasure of enjoying both versions in HD. I'm one of the latter by the way. After all, it worked well with the Blu-ray sets of Star Trek - The Original Series.

    I was thinking about picking this up on Amazon, but maybe the UK version instead. It seems to be a little cheaper and has the cover art on the disc themselves. Is the UK version region free? I would be playing them through a ps4. My other hesitation is the amount of bootleg copies of this particular set going around even on Amazon.(I know it’s rampant on Ebay). At Walmart it’s currently $90. Any thoughts? Thanks again for you expertise and great content.

      The discs should be the same as the ones I have in the 2013 Steelbooks from the UK. All of those are all-region, so you should be fine. If you order the U.S. set via Amazon, you can at least tell which are legit by making sure it's sold and shipped by Amazon, not just shipped (or neither).

    Nathan, I recently was browsing Ebay and I was shocked to discover a version of this re-release is for DVD. So I looked into it a bit and its a 12-disc set but it comes with all six films plus the bonus disc for each film and the artwork on them suggests it's a repackaging of each film's original DVD release so Episode 1's discs are a re-printing from 2000, Episode 2's discs from 2002, Epsiode 3's discs from 2005, and the original trilogy's discs are from 2006 meaning the bonus discs for those films contain the GOUT version of the film.
    I have never heard of this release before but it looks official.

      If you only mean 1 - 9: In the U.S., the only thing like that is the Best Buy exclusive Skywalker Saga set that includes the films on updated Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray bonus discs, and Ultra HD Blu-ray discs for each film. However, if you aren't picky about disc labels haveing foreign ratings on th em, you can pick up a Blu-ray (only) Skywalker Saga set from the UK, which is in a nice package and would basically be what you're looking for. The UK set is region free, so there's no issue playing in the U.S. You can see that package in ep. 286 of this series.
      If you mean 1 - 9 plus Rogue One and Solo: No such thing exists in any market legitimately, as far as I know.

      +MrSterling450 It has the same extras as the 2011 Complete Saga set. Bear in mind, though, that extras almost never repeat, so if you want the extras from the DVDs, you'll need the 2004 Original Trilogy set and either the 2008 Prequel Set or the individual Prequel releases. If you want the BD extras, you need the 2011 or 2015 Complete Saga set. If you want any of the extras from VHS or laserdisc, you'll have to get those too. There is no such thing as a set with "all of the extras" in the broad sense of the phrase.

Mine looks like a bootleg to be honest, all the colors on both the cover and discs are washed out, but it contains the "unaltered" original trilogy that seems to be going for quite a price on ebay

    Recently I grabbed a copy of the new 2019 blu rays. Thinking that a new hope would have the maclunky version on the standard version of the blu ray. I ripped it to my computer to see if it had any differences. And I learned it didn't have maclunky. The digtal copy came with it but not the blu ray. I'm going to buy the 4k disc and see if it has maclunky?

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 4 роки тому

      I've covered this in recent episodes in-depth, but there's the short version: None of the 2019 releases (i.e. black border Blu-ray or DVD copies) are the 2019 Disney+ cuts (i.e. Maclunkey versions). They came out two months too early. However, the 4K/BD/digital releases from 2020 do have updated Blu-ray film discs, so that's where you'll find the Maclunkey cuts on 4K UHD Blu-ray and regular HD Blu-ray. There aren't any releases so far outside of those that include 4K discs that have those cuts in the U.S. However, if you're looking for individual Blu-ray only releases or DVD-only releases with Maclunkey versions, you can import them from Australia or (as of tomorrow) the UK, where they didn't get the black border packages at all until 2020, allowing them to have the 2019 cuts on the discs.

    The value of the 2008 set must have changed in the past 8 years. I can’t imagine paying $100 for that set. I see it now for about $30 on eBay and I found it at a game exchange for $8(best deal I ever found on a dvd set)

    • @ChronoRadio

      Oh yeah, it finally fell after a while. It seemed to spike after the 2011 Blu-rays for several years, probably because people finally started to realize that they'd not ever get the "original" versions on Blu-ray, and those trilogy sets from 2008 were tougher to find at the time than the individual ones from 2006.

  • @AndrewChapman

    I recently brought Star Wars The Complete Saga Blu-ray set. But even though Darth Vader is my favourite Star Wars villain, I actually brought the 2011 release instead of the 2015 re-release. Why did I buy the 2011 release if Darth Vader is my favourite Star Wars villain? Well, the 2011 release shows both Luke and young Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine, providing a feel of both the original trilogy and the prequels. But Darth Vader was only Anakin in The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones and doesn't appear in the suit until near the end of Revenge of the Sith. 4:58 If the theatrical versions of the original trilogy had been available on Blu-ray, I would have brought that instead of The Complete Saga and then brought the prequel trilogy set. But as it seems unlikely the theatrical versions will be released on Blu-ray anytime soon, I also brought the 2006 Limited Edition DVDs. So I'm happy with what I have now.

    What's the point of the reissues? Not many people would bother buying something they already bought before.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 3 роки тому

      Reissues typically aren't aimed at people who already purchased them. They are aimed at those who never purchased them previously, hence altering packaging, bonus items (sometimes), etc. They also often alter physical component design, as in this case, in order to lower production costs and offer the items at lower prices than their original counterparts. Despite collectors picking them up, they aren't really aimed at collectors but at new buyers for that product range.

    Hi Nathan! Nice review by the way... So that version of the 2015 box set is the US version, right? I bought the 2011 box set (4 years ago) from Amazon.com, and each disc is slipped in one of the sides (just like the one you're showing on the video). So, in the new version (2015), discs are supposed to be removed much more easier than on the previous 2011 box set, right?

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 9 років тому

      +Christopher Carr I feel that it's easier with the new package yes. The come straight up and down like a typical BD case, rather than slipping into cardboard sideways and risking scratches.

    • @christophercarr2248
      @christophercarr2248 9 років тому

      +Nathan Butler I now this may sound irrational, but I feel like getting that box set (besides the one I bought back in 2011). The reason is because there are some discs from the previous box set where an image freezes, the sound goes off or skips from one scene to another, and I have only played each BD two times since the day I bought it. Moreover, the audio format changes from DTS to mono (or similar) during the 20th Century Fox fanfare. All discs are still new and no scratches are visible. That's why I wanted to try on a different box set. One where discs are easier to be removed.

      +Guillermo Martin Original theatrical aspect ratio, so on a widescreen TV, you will still get small amounts of black on top or bottom. However, they are not "letterboxed" in that the black bars are not built into the picture but created by the player or TV to fill in that extra space.

    • @IAmNeomic
      @IAmNeomic 9 років тому

      +Guillermo Martin The movies were shot in 2.35:1 ratio (aka "scope"), which is a little more narrow than 16:9, so when you play them on an HDTV, they will have some small black bars at the top and bottom. If you were to format them to 16:9, you would lose a nice chunk of the frame on the sides, much like a fullscreen DVD.

      It's the exact same discs as in 2011 (and the Walmart reissue in 2017 for that matter). If someone's not able to play them in a PS3 or PS4, then they have gotten bad discs somehow. I've been watching from this set on my PS3 and PS4 without any issues.
      It is also possible that the person posting that information doesn't have the actual 2015 Blu-ray reissue but has instead bought a bootleg (probably the bootleg set that looks a lot like this but is full of burned, bootleg DVDs instead). Those bootleg DVDs don't always play well in game consoles because they are burned DVD-R or DVD+R discs instead of factory-pressed DVDs.

    Hey Nathan. I do think it's odd that they didn't change the opening of the films (except for A New Hope of course) to be the opening that Disney and Lucasfilm put in. • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 9 років тому

      +Rainbow Runner Quite excited for TFA definitely. As for the steelbooks and this release, I figure it's just a matter of them reissuing a backstock of discs from 2011. No need to reauthor the discs, design new lablels, etc. Just make new packaging and fire 'em on out.

    • @rainbowrunner1550
      @rainbowrunner1550 9 років тому

      +Nathan Butler Well you know. They've reissued home video releases with the new logo every time there's been a company name change or something. Like the 1982 releases of A New Hope got reissued from 20th Century Fox to CBS Fox. The 1990 VHS box set got reissued in 92 with Fox Video instead. I honestly don't see why they didn't at least change the openings of the films in 2013 even with the Bluray/DVD combo packs. Have the 20th Century Fox thing in 2011, OK, but after 2012 when Disney bought Lucasfilm, they should've done it a lot earlier.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 9 років тому

      +Rainbow Runner Did you notice, though? They didn't even change distributors for this one. How bizarre is that? You would need to hunt down the 2017 re-issue that was exclusive to Walmart that included a bonus DVD with Forces of Destiny, Volume 1. • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 7 років тому

      Best bet is eBay to definitely get the 2011 version online instead of the 2015 one, which most retailers replaced their stock with. The 2015 one is easy to acquire as well, as long as you're using a reputible retailer. It's even easy to get through Amazon as long as you make sure it's both sold and ships via Amazon. (Anything else suggests an Amazon Marketplace seller, which is a Wild West of bootlegs mixed in with the real things.)
      I'm not aware of a particularly large amount of 2015 Complete Saga bootlegs out there that are Blu-rays, though. The bulk of the bootlegs tend to be DVDs (12 discs, bootlegged from the 2001 - 2006 2-disc sets per film). Did you repeatedly somehow run into *Blu-ray* bootlegs?

    • @ajk0476
      @ajk0476 7 років тому

      Nathan Butler yes I did run into repeated bootleg blu Rays there are also many blu ray sets that a bootlegs as well I think it's because since the 2015 set is a standard plastic case and paper sleeve as oppose to the 2011 set which the packaging would be so much harder to duplicate because of the way it's made and designed the 2015 set has so many bootlegs and I think your wrong since the 2015 set was released recently and since it was replaced as you say it will be a lot easier to find that on the market in the future as oppose to the 2011 set which was released pre Disney era and almost 6 years ago

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 7 років тому

      Time will tell on which will be more easily and cheaply obtained, but I find your scenario unlikely.
      Based on precedent, particularly since around 1990, what we tend to see is that reissues are produced in smaller numbers than the original releases, which means that there is already a more limited supply at launch. Then, the fact that they are reissues means that they also do not end up being purchased in as large numbers as the original release, which means that there will also be an even more limited supply available later on the secondary market. That's why, for example, you tend to see the 2005 and 2008 DVD releases of the Original Trilogy (and Prequel Trilogy when comparing 2008 to 2001, 2002, and 2005) selling for much higher prices usually than the corresponding 2004 and 2006 releases. 2004 and 2006 are initial product launches, while 2005 and 2008 are reissues with more limited supply both originally and on the secondary market.
      The Complete Saga would have to entirely buck this trend in order for the 2015 one to be the one more readily available in the future. Given that it received almost zero product promotion at the time of release (since all attention was on the steelbooks), that should mean an even smaller secondary market supply, not a larger one.
      Moreover, the idea that the Disney purchase of Lucasfilm would have anything to do with which is more widely available doesn't make sense either. Disney has absolutely no hand whatsoever at this point in the physical distribution of the Original Trilogy or Prequel Trilogy films on physical home media. Those rights remain in the hands of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, the company behind both the 2011 and 2015 Complete Saga releases. Disney will not be able to actively affect the physical media distribution of Eps. 1 - 3 and 5 - 6 until 2020 when the distribution deal expires, and they will never be able to control physical media distribution of ANH without purchasing those distribution rights back from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, since that was an arrangement made for all media in perpetuity. So saying Disney's ownership would make a difference in relation to the 2011 and 2015 Complete Saga sets is like saying that Donald Trump being president would affect the number of times a cat sneezed in Peru in 2008.

      If you're looking for the cheapest way, then it won't be a set. It would be to pick up the individual 2006 "limited edition" DVD releases that introduced those "unaltered" DVD bonus discs. They didn't have a "set" at the time, unless you count the Best Buy Collector's Tin. The only time there was ever a set with those discs was in 2008, but those sets sell for much higher prices than the individual 2006 discs.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 7 років тому

      You may need to clarify the last two bits, as I'm not sure about the context of what you're saying. If you mean "Why are there four different DVD releases of the OT"" as in "why so many?" then it's a question of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment's approach. They did the original set in 2004, then tried to get another boost in sales by stripping out the bonus dvd and "bargain pricing" it the next year as the second set in 2005. In 2006, they reissued as individual films instead of a boxed set, which was a first opportunity to get them separately, and that's when they were able to include the supposedly "unaltered" versions on a separate disc. That set never had a boxed set in 2006, though, so they reissued them for another shot at making some more money on the films by putting them into the boxed set released in 2008.
      This happens all the time in the history of Star Wars home video. That's why I have *59* different copies of ANH that are all U.S. releases, yet all somehow diffferent.
      I'm not sure what you're getting at with the final comment where you say, "the thing is fox has the original unaltered versions of the movies." So . . . .? And . . . ? I'm not getting the context of the comment.

      I mean the un-specialized editions of the original trilogy (4,5,&6).

    How many disks are there in the 2008 trilogy box?

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 8 років тому

      +Gam3rMan95 For the 2008 ones, it's 6 discs in each of the trilogy boxed sets. The prequel set in 2008 is just a repackage of the original 2-disc DVD releases of the prequels in 2001, 2002, and 2015, and the OT set from 2008 is just a repackage of the 2-disc (film and "bonus" unaltered film) releases of those from 2006.

    • @Gam3rMan95
      @Gam3rMan95 8 років тому

      +Nathan Butler You meant to say 2005 after 01 & 02? and in the PT box the six discs are 1 film and special feature disk? for example RotS has darth vader on the film disc while yoda is on special features?

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 8 років тому

      +Gam3rMan95 Oh, yeah, typo. 2005, not 2015. Yes, each of the PT ones are one disc just for the film (with commentary), and the second disc is bonus features. For the OT discs from 2008 and 2006, the first disc is the film with commentary and then the second disc is just the "unaltered" version. There are no other bonus features for the OT in the set, since the DVD bonus features for the OT were limited to the bonus disc in the 2004 boxed set. 2005 - 2008 DVDs didn't get any extra for the OT except the unaltereds in 2006 and 2008.

    • @Gam3rMan95
      @Gam3rMan95 8 років тому

      +Nathan Butler are the disc 1's from the 2004 OT the same disc cover and content as the 2006 and 2008 disc 1's.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 8 років тому

      +Gam3rMan95 Yes, the 2004 DVD discs for the films are just repackaged as the discs in 2005 and as the "disc 1" discs in 2006 and 2008. They don't update the DVDs until the 2013 BD/DVD combo packs when they update them to be the 2011 versions of the films instead of the 2004 versions.

      +Danny Ramos No, they didn't. That's yet another of the internet "rumors" that have floated around that pop up again every few months. Disney has announced no such plans for the unaltered trilogy on home video. Not just next year, but ever. They have been silent on the issue.

    Hello Nathan,
    Today I bought this Boxset, after watching your review, and the discs that are inside my package have character faces printed on, not like the ones presented by you.
    If you are interested, I can send you pictures!

    I've been sooo tempted to get this simply for the supplements. I honestly still prefer watching the trilogy on laserdisc.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 7 років тому

      Out of curiosity, have you watched them at all on Blu-ray outside of purchasing them?

    • @1dbanner
      @1dbanner 7 років тому

      I watched a blu ray copy of the original movie on blu. Looked nice but I do like seeing them the way I grew up with them.
      I really love the picture and sound quality of the SE laserdisc box set, but as you know, that's kind of Lucas giving w ine hand and taking w the other because of the alterations. The definitive collection set is the way I typically go. I'd kinda like to find some of the earlier widescreen laserdisc editions for fun, especially the edition with the incredible shrinking aspect ratio.

    I was wondering if maybe you could do a video displaying all of your star wars blu rays/dvd's/other collection all together, not like in this one where you do 1 or 2 at a time, I just thought I'd share my idea with you!!! I think it would be a good and interesting video to see. I hope you like my idea!! :)

    lol for the last time Disney I will not buy SW on blu ray again until you release the original theatrical cuts, also I hear that they finally are gonna do it im not sure though because of the rights how it would work out, hopefully fox comes to an agreement with Disney what a treat it would be before episode 7

    I hate how the new set does not have the new fanfares

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 7 років тому

      That's because they are physical relases, which makes them through 20th Century Fox, so their logo still fits. It is only when totally under Disney's control for releases that the fanfares change or vanish, and for Ep. I - VI, that's just for digital release right now, since those are the only rights to those films that Disney currently controls.

  • @realmcr2002

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio 9 років тому

      +Dvd and Vhs collector Not actually true. Now that Disney owns LFL, they have the distrubution rights to any new versions and/or new formats, so, for instance, Disney was able to change the fanfare and have control of distribution for the digital HD releases, but since these were the 2011 cuts on physical media, they did not have control over distrubution on this set. Disney has the distribution rights, though, to all but ANH in any new format or version. They are all (except ANH due to Fox's distribution rights to all formats) Disney films now.
