What a perfect, concise, and to-the-point demonstration on something that I bet 95% of the guitarists out there have no idea about. Solid as always, Rob 🤘🏻
Awesome Frank!👊
Would've never imagined that my favorite guitarist would also be the guy that teaches me everything i know about doing tech work to the guitars i try to emulate his sound on.😅
Hey, sounds like a win win relationship! 👊
I can't THANK YOU enough for posting this! I was always afraid to adjust my truss rod. I just set up my 7 string that had buzz issues, and my bass! No more buzzing!
Great to hear it man and happy to help! 🎸
I swear every how to video you produce has made me more confident about working on my own guitars. So direct to the point and spoken clearly great video rob 🤘🏼
So glad to hear that man!🤘
I love your choice in strings
Beginner guitarist here. Super helpful video! My Ibanez RG421 has the same issue as this guitar you are adjusting.
Glad it helped!🎸
Great video! Thanks!!🙏🏼
Dude, what a great, thorough and easy to understand video. I've been playing for a long time and the truss rod has always been something that has been a mystery to me and all instructional things I've ever read or watched have made it sound so much more complicated that by the time I was done I barely knew the difference between clockwise and counterclockwise. Your presentation is so helpful .Thank you and great job!! 👍
I'm super happy to hear that man! And glad to have helped! Cheers! 🎸
Perfect tutorial Rob, killing it as always!
Thanks bro!
My fav LTDs are the "handwritten" style old logo, hell yessss
Appreciate the very straightforward explanation 👍
Thanks for tuning in!
I know how to do all of this, but I always watch to show my support. Thanks Rob!!!
I appreciate it!
Hey Rob, love these instructional videos. Can you do a video on pickup adjustment and height?
Thank you for all these How To videos. I've learned a lot. 🤘😀
Glad to hear it Roy, and I appreciate you watching!
As always you are the man Rob ✊🏿
👊
Those videos are super awesome, coming from a professional /touring musician, to the point and as simple as it gets! Really inspiring to a lot guitarists who are terrified to mess with truss rods, bridges etc
🙏
Very well explained. Thank you for that.💯👍
Right on!
Man I love the Viper so much damn. That is so nice I am so jelly broski.
Damn that thing is a beast.
Great video now I also have a bit of knowledge about the truss rod thanks to you 🤘🏼
🤘
Oh my goodness! I need just did a bend and pinch harmonic like you did in the DVD video years ago. Only took me a decade to get it right. Yes! I'm so happy!
😝🎸
This is one of the best videos on truss rods I've seen.
I really appreciate that Joe!🙌
You saved me money! I was going to take mine to a shop. Also RIP Trevor Strnad
More videos with this guitar please
These tutorials will come in handy soon, my guitar tech is retiring shortly and i will need this information to do it all myself!
Perfect!
your guitar setup tutorials are just amazing. Straight to the point with no fancy equipment required. I really had a hard time figuring out truss rods adjustments when I started learning the guitar because all the tutorials I could find required rulers and loosening the strings, not to mention how they make adjusting the truss rod sound too terrifying because of how often they mention 'breaking your guitar'. It took me years to collect enough courage to do more than just one turn to finally set the neck up correctly. Thank you so much!
Glad you appreciated it man and thanks for tuning in! Happy you got the hang of it as well!🎸
I was literally looking for a video on this and it just so happens you dropped one 🤣 ! Crazy man, love your work on yt and with chimera
Right on Craig! Perfect!🤘
Cool trick from your buddy at ESP
Awesome and very very usefull video! Thanks!!
Glad it was helpful!🎸
Damn thouse pickups thump... BRUDLE!!!
Wich they still used the old Ltd logo...
Awesome video, well explained in detail. Great job, Rob! After also having seen your video about the evertune system setting, which is on the same, great level as this video, I decided to subscribe to your channel.
Hey I appreciate that man, and welcome aboard! 🎸
Absolutely spot on tutorial Rob as always 👏 However, and not trying to encroach, just as a precaution for any newbs, and inexperienced individuals, only adjust 1/4 turns at a time, even with on guitar's with a huge neck relief situation, at least until you become more experienced at knowing how much the truss rod adjustment affects the guitar you are setting up 👍🤘
I think that I may of already told you about my Hondo guitar that also had to have the truss rod adjusted and really did the trick once my friend got the neck back in line again. After that the guitar never went out of tune and not only did it sound better but also made it a lot easier when changing strings. So Rob thanks for another great video. \m/
Nice! Glad to hear you got it going again Darren!
I FUCKING love you, Rob Arnold. ♥️
Haha cheers bro👊
Got a couple acoustics this might help👊🏼good tips man🤘🏻
Definitely brother!🤘 Acoustic necks notoriously bow near the 12th fret.
The truss rod has always been scary to me. This has helped. Thanks for all the videos!
Thanks for tuning in!
Thank you for making it SUPER CLEAR which way to turn the truss rod. I thought I'd have to remove the strings to remove the cover as well. Actually, using the test you show at 4:30, I've realized I don't need to adjust the truss rod yet. Thanks again.
Right on! Happy to help!🎸
Its D.W. here man! Thanks Rob! You are one of my go-2s on Guitar maintenance. Good news! I finally got my Jackson DKMGT Reverse Headstock (Needs a new paint job but I am working on that here soon) oooooooo....... That guitar is badass! ESP LTD Viper 300!!!!! I know you used it for the Sp Lit video. But I am waiting for that Guitar to be sold one day at G-Center. That guitar is next on my list!
Awesome bro! That Dinky sounds rad!
thank you so much for this video Rob my Epiphone Prophecy Explorer never played better after i used this video to make adjustments.
That's what I like to hear man! 🎸
The truss rod to adjust action rather than the bridge tip is spot on. Wasted too many hours screwing bridge height when the whole thing was just out of wack and needed adjustments.
👌 Sometimes you just don't know, until you know.
Quality as always Rob. One good tip, when freting the 1st and 17th fret. You can use a capo on the 1st fret freeing up a hand to use a business card or better yet a feeler gauge at the 12th fret. 🤘
Great idea for sure Jed!🎸
I want to get the notched strait edge from stew Mac soon jsut haven’t had the money but I have 4 job interviews this week
Notes towards the nut need more fret clearance to vibrate freely, hence we need some neck relief by adjusting the truss rod, like Mr. Arnold did.
The VB-300 sounded so good. Bet it plays real nice now
Totally!🎸
Well. Here i am yet again watching setup vids at 10pm lol. I’m getting some dead spots on that MH I just got. I automatically went and raised the bridge. That resolved some spots but around the 12th fret it’s dead.
I like to start with truss rod adjustments, then move onto bridge height adjustments if necessary. It's a balancing act between the two. But if I can avoid adjusting the bridge, I will. Sometimes though, the guitar tells you what it wants, and you must oblige!
Also, I don’t know if many people think about this. Say I run 9s on my guitar but wanna have slightly tighter treble strings, so I put a 9.5 and 12.5. By using the string tension calculator that SJ supplies, put your string gauges in and the tuning you are using. Write down the total tension number at the bottom. Then change the treble strings to the gauges you are putting on now. Check that total tension number. This will help you gauge just how much adjustment your truss rod will need to get it back setup to where it was originally
Interesting!
First time I made intonation after your video :). I had made the low action through the bridge unlike truss-rod, I didn't trust myself on truss-rod :D. Before your video's release, I hope I didn't mess up everything, but I did intonation after that, they are in tune now, I wonder If I sacrificed some sustain, after doing this way, because I had to move each 6 string holders about 2mm's to the left when guitar sits like yours to be able to intonate 12th frets. :). EDIT: Loose strings and remove springs, then adjust the tremolo height with spuds.
Hey we live and learn! Consider what you did an experiment! And if it worked well for you, then it's all good! And perhaps with now seeing how to adjust the truss rod, you can use that knowledge to further dial things in!🎸
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🔨🔨🔨excellent!!!
Great video! Always had question marks about touching "that part" of the guitar. Nicely explained, plain and simple. I remember that Viper from another video where you whistled as a reaction to it's awesome tone after you made the setup. You made BokuSenpai, one of your subscribers buy a Viper with that whistle:) This one is that Viper, am I correct? It's a shame that he replaced the pickups though, the tone was amazing! Anyway it's all about the taste.
Great content!
Haha awesome! I hope Boku loves his Viper! And yes, this is the guitar! It's also the Viper I used in Chimaira's very first video, "Sp Lit".
So you didn't like the tone from the end of the video with the Fat 55's?
@@RobArnoldWorld Yes, I remember that too! Well, of course I liked it, still a kick ass tone, also the guitar itself is a thing of beauty, with that shiny blue color. But the previous tone was majestic, it was BRUTAL. Made both of us whistle just like you did :) I am a lefty, the life is hard when you obsess about guitars and be a lefty at the same time! Otherwise I would have also gone with a Viper, all because of that video of you set up this gorgeous guitar.
This is great info for newer players. For years I never understand why every spring and fall my action would get all out of whack. Knowing how to adjust the truss rod is imperative to a properly playing guitar.
Rob - late to the show but finally found your site. Great video by the way. Quick question: what are your thoughts on loosening string before truss rod adjustments? Is it necessary? Thanks!
Thanks Mark! In my experience, loosening the strings is unnecessary. A retuning however, will definitely be necessary. 🎸
The only dude I TRUSS to show me how to do this properly is Rob Arnold! 😊🤙
Haha nice one!🤘😉
rob!!! picked up the nomad cleaning tool set after seeing ur video...awesome tools, but my question is...why did this invention take so long???!!! the make-up brush part is great for cleaning around amp pots...cheers brother!!!
Awesome Gerald! Yeah man my guess is that it's probably been around for a minute, but nobody had heard of it. So I'm happy to be spreading the word about an excellent product! Glad you dig it too!
Do you have any vids about adjusting a fixed bridge afterwards? I lowered my bridge years ago and then haven't touched this guitar in years. Just took it out and noticed the relief has run wild. I assume if you straighten it out and are getting crazy buzzing or dead spots on a particular side, then raise that side until it stops? Or is it better to raise the bridge uniformly? It's a tune-o-matic on an older mh-400nt. Thanks for all the vids man! One of the most entertaining and useful guitar channels out there.
Thanks man!
You can certainly make height adjustments from your bridge, but I like to do that after I've set my neck. Over time, the neck is the thing that will change based on it's environment, where the bridge, being metal, should always be where you left it.
After your guitar has sat awhile, if you go to play it and the action has changed, you'll want to address that with the neck first.
After that, you can fine tune things or address trouble areas by making bridge height adjustments. I like to adjust each side uniformly if possible, and then individually if necessary.
The whole process is a balancing act, and even the most minor adjustments have an effect on the outcome.
With patience and persistence, your guitar can be strumming nicely again in no time!🎸
@@RobArnoldWorld ok sweet, good to know. Ya last time I did this I mostly knew what I was doing but not fully 😂 hence why I started from the bridge. No idea what the original position was at this point so I'll definitely start with the truss and play around from there like you suggested. Thanks again! 🐐
Hi Rob. Glad you said it's possible to do this from the truss rod only. I had my guitar tuned over lockdown, and even though they tuned it great, the action of the strings felt really slack, so while this may suit low playing guitarists, when it came to playing fast palm muted metal songs for example, it felt really loose and just didn't feel the same. I've just kind of lived with it for a couple of years, but when you can't play certain things the same you could before you have to make that change.
For your sound have you always had this tuned how you have it on this vid, or did you ever play it with a tighter action to get your crunching sound when palm muting? I met you in Leeds UK in 2004 at a signing, which subsequently after seeing you I pulled the plug and got my first guitar which was the ESP I am using to this day as the guitars just sounded exactly how I wanted mine to sound. Weirdly I actually wanted to ask you this very question at the sign in but wasn't something you could or would want to answer in the middle of hundreds of people wanting an autograph.
Awesome man! I remember some good shows in Leeds! And glad to hear your ESP has treated you well for all these years!
Personally, I prefer a lighter gauge and higher tuning. My sweet spot is drop C, with 11-52's. I've got tons of other videos describing that setup if you're interested! Cheers and thanks for tuning in!🤘
@@RobArnoldWorld thankyou Rob, glad the North of England has some good memories for you.
I will certainly check out the rest of your videos and picking up some more pointers. Thankyou for the reply and also for the memories. What a time to be alive where you can hear from someone you grew up listening to over 20 years ago, really appreciate it.
Hey Rob! Curious about your preferred setup - what's your string height/action at 12th fret for 1st and 6th string? And your EMGs, how far from the strings for bridge pickup? Thanks Rob love the channel, keep it up!
Thanks Adam! Happy to hear it! Every time I have a guitar set up by ESP, I say this... "Drop C, 11-52, with a nice low action". And that's how I receive em'! Nothing technical about it. (in terms of actual measurements). It's just a feel/look thing for me.
Same with the pickup height... I try and get it close to the strings, but not close enough to impede in any way whatsoever. I also keep the treble side slightly higher than the bass side on my pickups, with hopes that leads will stand out a little more when playing live. 🎸
@@RobArnoldWorld awesome man, thanks for the info!!!
So I tightened to have flat neck but I only to where it got snug. How much more can I go? Never done this and don’t wanna break. Great vids
I think that you can take it a little further! Certainly to where you'd like it to be, which should be with a slight amount of relief. Just barely noticeable is how I like it.
And by "snug", I assume you mean that there's some resistance, which is to be expected. But if it's nearing un-turnably tight, then you've gone too far.
Yep, thats how ya do it. Do t worry about measurements and specs. The spec is “does it feel good?”. 🤘
Amen!
A black baritone viper in B standard. Yup. It’s definitely a doom machine.
Hello, which wrench of truss rod is best for my fender cv 70s bass? 3/16 is too big obviously, and 4mm is a little bit loose , it almost makes me crazy😢 thanks
Unfortunately I'm unfamiliar with that instrument, so I can't say. I recommend a multi tool allen wrench set like this, which should have any wrench you need for any job!
amzn.to/3QglsQs
Awesome thanks! Recently got a Jackson 7 string and the fucker buzzes like crazy.
Hopefully this can help you out! Lemme know!
@@RobArnoldWorld yes it definitely helped. Thank you sir!🤘🤙
@@POPCANCOCK Glad to hear it!🤘
What about setting bridge height? My neck is pretty straight but my bridge on one of my EC 1000s was slammed to the body.
I'll think about addressing that topic in a new video!
I have a viper 100 lame right but has a Crack neck any ideas into how to fix
Wood glue, tooth picks or something similar to get the glue down into the crack, and clamps! That's all I can say without getting a look at it myself.
@@RobArnoldWorld I was thinking the same now got to get some wood clamps
So you don't have a Capo to put on the first fret for your little credit card technique??
A capo is something I've actually never owned! I wouldn't mind having one around the lab.
Was having buzzing above the twelfth fret on the low e and a strings. Tightened the truss rod and it just made the buzzing spread to all the frets on those strings. Not really sure what to do
Tighten the truss lowers your action (distance from the strings to the fret board), and increases the potential for fret buzz. So you'll want to back off your truss rod a little, and perhaps even consider raising your bridge a bit. But first, I'd start with loosening your truss and seeing what happens.
@@RobArnoldWorld Thanks so much for the reply! I loosened the truss rod and raised the bridge a bit and now I’ve got no more buzzing. The action is noticeably higher than it was before but it’s still comfortable to play.
Does it matter if you're in D standard or does it have to be in E
All the principles apply no matter what tuning you're in!
To anyone ALMOST adjusting your guitar perfectly, try neck shimming, please do!
You could put a capo on the first fret, if you need a free hand for you card test. 🤷♂️
All these years, I've never owned a capo! One day I will!🎸
@@RobArnoldWorld maybe it's time.
Only for work of cause.
Refen
did i see that right!? Drop G tuning on a 7 string?? What song requires such monstrosity....
"Jade" from our Pass Out record!
@@RobArnoldWorld Dude wtf was the thought process for that!? It was so advanced on so many layers...
@@ForLorNVuLgaR Ha! Mark Hunter was all about those LOWWWWW tunings back in the day!
@@RobArnoldWorld What!? Is that what happened back during the "nu metal" days of songs like Sp Lit?
@@ForLorNVuLgaR Yes that's why we used 7 strings early on. Korn, Deftones, etc, were all using 7 strings, and we got caught up in that too!
A capo can be a third hand bud just saying lol
Your NOT supposed to adjust string height with the truss rod!
Yea, there were quite a number of red flags in this for me...but there are probably more than one way to skin a cat. I can see scenarios where this would help. I guess it's everyone's responsibility to learn ALL the options of adjustment, the impact of those, and to choose where they like to focus on. I tend to set relief first, then action if needed with the bridge.
