I'm that Heavy Bottom guy. I like bending some high notes, I also enjoy that 52 chunk. Which I also enjoy 'bending' Heavy Metal Over Everything!
Light Top/Heavy Bottom FOREVER!
For me its the 12-56 cobalt slinkys! Chunky pickin on the strings and The cobalt actually does brighten up the sound a bit.
Rob's tutorials are some of the best out there. Endlessly thankful to you.
🙏
I thought standard tuning was E A D G B E. No wander I've been playing for 38 years and still suck! I'm tuning wrong, Duh!
Haha I thought the same thing!
Rick Beato and Rhett Schull did an experiment on string gauge. They found that lighter meant a bit clearer, especially when adding gain. In my theory as to why, comes down to harmonics. Thicker strings tend to allow more vibration and creates more harmonics, some good, some bad.
Interesting!
Great video Rob, I tend to go for the NYXL 10-46 D,addario
My "standard" size set is the Ernie Ball 10-52, if I'm feeling rich I will buy the Cobalt version which sound great. These are great for Eb down to Drop C on my guitars.
I did use Ernie ball strings on my fender. And I had to use GHS Boomer strings for my BC Rich, As I did try other brand of strings. But it was a lot harder to keep the BC Rich in tune.
Informative vid Rob!
Even though I’ve been playing for decades now I always watch these kinds of videos and usually learn something new. I will offer this option for beginners, consider starting out with Elixir Polyweb coated strings (they come in 9’s, 10’s, and 11’s only). I say this because some beginners will stop playing because the combination of fingers hurting along with trying to learn a lot of techniques becomes overwhelming. The Polywebs feel so smooth that they would allow them to work up to playing 30-60 minutes a day (and will naturally build calluses) and then at this point they could experiment with more traditional (un-coated) strings. Just a thought, whatever people choose I wish everyone happy riffing! 🤘
Thanks for the tip Mitch! I'll have to check out some Elixir's!
I love your videos bro
I appreciate you tuning in! 👊
Daddario nyxl 10-52 in drop C on my 26.5 scale Ibanez and Jackson soloist
I noticed early on in my journey that with .09s and how I played, I pressing frets too hard (I still do this at times). It was Completely changing the pitch of any note. Once I found the set that worked for me I never changed brand/type/gauge again. Consistency is most important to me.
I believed 9-46 was for me through and through after trying either a 10-52 or 11-56 and didn’t care for it at the time. Just restrung with 10-52 and I actually like it a bit better. I had to raise the action a tad because of the larger string sizes and I hate fret buzz. But that little extra string material is helping me with other things, like vibrato, legato, and strengthening my fingers and left hand with bends. Even one size up is a noticeable difference!
for my kramer with emg 57 in standard D I use 10x52 pro steel my telecaster in standard C or B 12x54 and my eclipse 13x56 dr sting with the string g net because in standard C and my jaguar is under development
Hey Rob, great video! What gauge strings are you using for drop C tuning? I'm currently on an 11-54 set and they seem well balanced. If you could let me know the brand you usually go with, that would be awesome too.
If he doesn’t answer I’m pretty positive that’s what he uses gauge wise.
And I think that’s a good one, although I slightly prefer 12-56.
He uses a custom set of DR High Beams, 11, 13, 20 wound, 30, 42, 52.
@@mitchthemetalhead2589 damn that’s fairly light!
Thanks dude! Yep, I use DR High Beam 11-52. Check this segment out for more info! ua-cam.com/video/EFVd_NseA5E/v-deo.html
Blue steel 10-52 for drop C tuning for me
I'm not really sure what gauge I'm after 8's for tuning up, but not in standard because I feel like most light -extra light will sound thin, or clicky, in the picking hand, but good in the fretting hand.
I was all the years not really caring about a brands just sticked to my gauges and took whatever was available… mainly Ernie balls… man was I wrong
I recently bought a brand new ESP M-II and the strings that where on it blew my mind have never felt something so smooth before 🤷🏻♂️ did a little check and found out it was setup in the factory with elixier nanoweb strings… so I ordered some sets 10-46 for my standart E to drop D guitars and 10-52 for my drop c guitars and these where exactly what I didn’t know I need for 15 years 😁 cannot better describe it but the Ernie balls feel like sandpaper to the fingers compared to the elixier nanoweb which are super smooth and slide and bend friendly 😜🤘
They are like everything good not on the cheap end… but not too bad
Yeah the Nanowebs are awesome, if you would like an even smoother feel with less string noise try the Polywebs…I’m fully addicted to them. 🤘
I just got a set of Ernie Ball cobalts. What are your thoughts on those? By the way jammed impossibly of reason tonight! Absolutely heavy as hell!!!
Awesome man!🤘 Unfortunately I've never tried the colbalts.
Hey Rob any advice on a de-tune or pitch pedal so I don't have to set up a bunch guitars in different tunnings?
I did the same a few years ago. Only downfall to playing with a drop pedal is if it’s at bedroom volumes. Other than that it’s awesome
The Digitech Whammy DT, kinda pricey but if you have a guitar tuned to Drop C for example (like Rob) you can go from Standard E all the way to Drop A and still sound authentic. It will take a tiny amount of treble and clarity from your tone, so just compensate by turning the treble or presence (depending on your amp) up a notch and you’re all set.
So far for pitch shifting, I've only experimented with the Fender Tone Master Pro, and it seems to do the trick. But I've also heard good thing about the Digitech Whammy DT, and the Electro-Harmonix Pitch Fork. I'm anxious to try them both sometime soon!
Might not be necessary now I'm leaving to get my toni iommi sg signature so now I can drop one of my other sg's down so I can follow along on your pateron...
I’ve never even heard of flat wound strings. Interesting. Also I’ve been on 12-56 Not Even Slinky’s FOREVER but for a minute in my band SwampsteeL, we switched to 12-56 Cobalt Ernie Balls, and from what I remember they definitely sounded different in a good way but they felt “greasy” to the fingers. Needless to say, we switched back.
Make a video bout choosing the guage for popular tunings

I’m a balanced tension guy ever since discovering Stringjoy. They feel fantastic and even all throughout.
I've tried one set of Stringjoy's and they were the nicest strings I had ever used.
NYXL 10 - 52s all day.
