Hey Rob. Do you have an answer for this. ? This process won't work while using a BASS TUNER APP versus a tuner that you plug from guitar to tuner OR should it matter? That's what I use A TUNER APP that I think works great for me. But I can't get a reading off any of the strings from the 12th fret pluck like in your video. But no big deal because I tinkered with it for a hr or more and it sounds better , plays better and smoother, and my pickup switch is working correctly again
Hey man- I would assume it would work with a bass tuner, especially on a bass, but I can't be sure without seeing it myself. And that's weird that you can't get a reading on the 12th fret. The higher the pitch, the more a tuner usually likes a note!
@@RobArnoldWorld one more question. No rush ...but dam I need an answer. 1) have you ever seen a guitar rewired with a thicker gauge wire than stock make a difference on the overall sound and tone?
Well Brother. ...I'm gonna take you for a lil more than this Faceb value, and say THANKS for replying first. And I believe you. Most said naaa but IDK .. YOU WAS " NOPE!". 1 NOPE beats 2 IDKs. Personally Idk. I had a fella wanting to hustle me I think.
Finally! A source/video on intonation that actually made setting intonation easy to understand! I've done all work on my guitars, but properly setting intonation has always escaped me! This video went real step by step and made it all clear. Great job Rob! Thanks so much for tackling this subject, and making this process clear. You have a fan for life here!!
Rob you never disappoint. They are a bunch of videos with this topic and many other guitar topics and all the other videos just don't cut it for me. With robs videos its a whole different ball game. Every thing he teaches and shows i always understand it better then the other videos. He alway gives the best info and will explain it to were you can understand it all. I've watched many other UA-cam videos and alot of them just don't do it for me and I lose my attention fast. Not with robs videos I soak it all the info up and re-watch many of robs older videos and always learn something new from then. Thanks for being there for your fans rob.
Rob, you’re seriously such a good teacher man. Really appreciate these vids. Would you be willing to show us string height adjustment, tuning and intonation on an evertune bridge? All of my fiddles are equipped with evertune now. You’ve actually inspired me to start setting up my own guitars rather then pay someone else how to do it. I feel like I have an ok grip on setting up evertunes now but I’d love to see how you do it man!! Have an awesome day! 😊🤘
this was the best most straight forward tutorial on how to do this! so many other videos either do it wrong or over explain the process. thanks for this!!
Dude im 30 years in the game and STILL take my flippin guitars in😂🤓. I just Cant set action and intonation Rob! I envy guys like you that have the skill
Hey I understand! I like mechanical stuff, but I still take my cars into the repair shop! And another thing is that if you have a good tech working on your stuff, no reason to not continue that way!
Learned a tuning trick the other day on UA-cam, When you're trying to perfectly tune when intonating for instance, Switch to the neck pickup and lower the tone knob on the guitar just about 10% Somehow this gives a much better reading on digital tuners, as if there's less "noise" interfering the signal of the pickup or something like that. Oh and thanks for the video! helped me a LOT.
One thing I always do when doing a setup is I always tune up to the note when tuning. I never tune down to pitch ,I've found that doing that can give you a false tune . Just what I do. Great vid as always brother 👍
This was kinda ironic to catch this...seeing how a couple of my guitars need to have this done. Great, informative lesson. Thank you for videoing this and giving us a close up of how you perform the intonation process. Cheers!
Thank you for the vid I got my 9th guitar a few days ago its the first 1 I've bought new and needs set up wich I didn't evan think about i learned how to adjust trust rod from another vid and now after watching this I'm away to do the intonation I'll remember it for life from that simple trick of chasing the needle much appreciated
Great video dude! Fun to watch! So many people don't know this. I remember back in the day so many players would complain that their Floyd goes out of tune after dive bombing. This is why. I could be a maniac with the bar and my guitars never go out of tune.
I'm a drummer. And I found this very informative. My 10 yr old son plays guitar. Defiantly going to show him this. Wish my guitar players back in the day did this. Thanks for the info rob!
@@RobArnoldWorld he's been listening to pass out impossibly and resurrection. He loves the song Six. And he likes dehumanizing process cause he saw videos of my old band covering that song.
This is perfect!! Thanks Rob! Love your videos. Especially gear and guitar reviews. This is very helpful. I went to your website and ordered a mug 😃 Cheers mate!
Thanks for this, Rob. I have a Schecter with a Hipshot bridge like your guitar here and don't know how to adjust intonation or action for that matter. However, in my defense, I'm mainly a drummer and just play guitar a little on the side but this is information I need to know so I don't have to keep paying someone else to do it for me. Thanks for the all the awesome content!🤘🤘
Alot of videos on youtube don't actually show how to intonate bridges but yours was informative,my guitar has the les paul type bridge, simple and super easy, love that natural curve
I'm so glad I stumbled across this video this video and the adjusting the truss rod really helped me I'm a complete amateur when it comes to truss rod adjusting and moving the saddles but after watching you I felt like a semi pro thanks for sharing your knowledge
I think you're a really cool humble person for posting videos to help other guitar players out and responding to peoples comments most big time bands the band members wouldn't do what you're doing not knocking them or anything I'm sure they probably are busy but some get the big head and think they're to cool for school. Also wanna add first time o heard empire back in day I was hooked on Chimaira
Even though I'm familiar with adjusting intonation, I still like watching videos like this. It's a good refresher, at least. I have the same guitar, but the 2020 model. I ended up swapping out the Fishmans for the EMG 81/60 combo. Shoot, my low E dances around perfect and I'm tuned to E flat with 11-52 strings. That's on my EC-1001, though. My M-1000 lives in D and drop C, occasionally, and it seems to be a little more stable with tuning.
@@RobArnoldWorld Yeah, they're pretty nice, especially the Eclipse. I've been an ESP/LTD fan for many years now. They just have a nice fit and finish to them and have a good feel to them. My Eclipse was a B-stock, so I got it for a good price. I put a GraphTech nut on both guitars and what an improvement.
I did the same with my Schecter SLS Elite Evil Twin. It came with Fishman Fluence Moderns but I just really did not dig the sound of them. Had them swapped for the EMG 81/60 and it sounds much better now. Fishmans are great pickups but I feel they're a bit overrated.
@@patrickolivier1 Yeah, I tried the Fluence Modern pickups for about 6 months before I changed them out for my go-to EMG 81/60 combo and I immediately heard a drastic difference. EMGs just have a nasty snarl about them, especially the 81, and I love the bluesy sound of the 60. The 60 is quite killer in the bridge, too.
Holy crap, Rob! I was a huge fan of Chimaira when I was a teenager and then you guys just disappeared. I randomly saw your name pop up on this video and I was like "wait a minute, I know this dude!". This is invaluable information and you made it super super easy to understand. I'm gonna try this on one of my beater guitars. Cheers dude!
Awesome man! Happy to hear you dug the video! Please head down the rabbit hole and explore more of my channel! Tons of Chimaira stuff... loads of guitar maintenance videos, and more!🤘
One thing I’ve noticed when doing set ups, if you roll your tone knob down, and use the neck pup. You’ll get more accurate reading on the tuner. I mean I use a Peterson strobe tuner for my set ups, just cause how accurate they are, and with me using 7 strings and low tunings it really helps with the wound strings. Another thing that helps is backing the pick ups down a bit. It helps with not getting those blips you mentioned. Killer vid bro
5:38 a note is a certain frequency, so the string produces that frequency. Lower frequencies equal longer wavelengths and vice versa. That's why a low pitch instrument, like a bass, has a longer scale length (obviously string tension is also a factor). But that basically means, if it is sharp, you have to elongate the measure and if it's flat you have to shorten the measure (basically "stretching" and "squeezing" the wave). :)
After spending $$$ over the years, I decided to learn how to do it myself. Thank you for this well explain how to without over talking. Straight to the point just how I like it. Do yoh have a video on settings floyd Rose?
Hey thanks man! Yes! Here are a couple videos on Floyds you can check out! ua-cam.com/video/lvHqdSe0z4o/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/mt7qxvPL4uI/v-deo.html
Very good video! I've been intonating my guitars on my own for ages, but I always forget which way to adjust the saddles. That "chase the needle" hint will stick, seriously good advice. Regarding the lower strings, have you considered tuning by harmonic overtones? You can strike the 5th, 7th and/or 9th fret harmonic and tune that, then strike the octave at 17th, 19th and/or 21st fret and see how well they are in tune. I find those much more consistent than the loose and wobbly open low strings.
Great to hear man! Even though I've done this a ton of times now, I too still have to think about which way to move the saddles, and as you said, the chase the needle hint helps every time! And yes, I'll often take a look at various harmonic overtones as well, and I like to try and take the average between the open, the fretted 12th, and the natural harmonics!
Great videos, as always! Got new strings (trying 10-52 for the first time), adjusted FR bridge, truss rod and intonation following your tutorials. Have to say this Schecter has never felt so good. Thank you Rob! lml
Thank you very Much Rob your videos are very helpful! Setting up my guitar has always seemed like a very daunting task but you explained it and demonstrated it in a way that made it easier to understand 😀
when lowering the pitch, you should pass the middle a little, and then give it a tiny tug. then tune it UP to pitch. it will help since theres no locking nut ;)
thanks but you did not clearly show the 6th string:) right now I am struggling with this one and ordered a new set of strings to see if I will have better luck with another brand :)
In what way are you struggling? Perhaps I can help. And remember, it's the principals that are important, and the method should be applied to each string in the same way. So you wouldn't treat one string differently than another, when it comes to intonating the strings.
@@RobArnoldWorld thanks, I have 2 more electric guitars I do not have a problem for intonation but got a Schecter - Nick Johnston Traditional recently and the E string is still a little high on 12 frets there seems to be no space left to tighten the screw and make the length of string longer, I even changed strings but still same. A few cents higher and perhaps I am a perfectionist :)
@@persiaguitar I understand, and I've run into the same issue before too. From one perfectionist to another, it is a frustrating scenario. While i don't have a sure-fire solution, all I can say is that somewhere in the mechanics of it all, one component of your setup isn't playing nicely with another. It could be the relationship between your tuning, and the string gauge. Or one of those things, and your neck relief. Or your tuning and your scale length. etc. There are many variables. And if you have the time, I recommend experimenting relentlessly. And eventually, the guitar should tell you what it likes. From there you can begin to figure out how to manipulate things in a way so that you're both happy. Good luck!
@@persiaguitar Had this problem in 2 guitars and returned them, it may be badly placed bridge, so I don't want to work with that on a new instrument. Sometimes it's a high nut that can cause this, so a luthier can help with that. Also, you can try to lower your string action, because it makes intonation more "flat", but only if you have spare space until strings start to buzz :) And if I remember correctly, you can try to make your neck more straight using truss rod, which basically makes strings a tiny bit longer.
Thank you so much! I just finished setting up my Tele using your method here. I even used the app of the tuner you used. (Yes, I know the app probably isn't as accurate as the real thing, but it's what I have.) Setting the intonation was a bit of a pain in the ass cuz it's my first time & the heavier strings are harder to set, just like you said, but I FINALLY got green lights for both the open string and the fretted 12th fret on all 6 strings, so that's good enough for me! Definitely gonna subscribe to your channel! My dream is to someday build & set up my own guitar from scratch using Warmoth parts & now I am this much closer to that goal. 👌
THANK YOU... THANK YOU...... THANKS YOU!!!!! I cannot say or give enough thanks to all yall guys that give perfect information to dedicated players that can't learn enough. I'll say this tho MY WASHBURN BASS wasn't very far off. And I set my action up after I learned how OFF A VIDEO SIMILAR a couple years ago..( before I would let a local SEASONED ) work on my stuff. I would like some wiring info for an ACTIVE EMG setup. I have an late 80s or early 90s WASHBURN ABT with a 9v pot in the body.
This is by far the easiest to follow video on this on all of youtube. I've watched TONS of them. l always doubt myself so I constantly refresh my memory (years of weed will do that kids, stay away till you're an adult)
subscribed! And GOD I want this guitar.... just not sure I can afford anything at the moment. That finish, M shape, fishmans, cmon.. it drives me absolutely crazy!
my intonation is off on the A string. I moved the saddle back even to the fardest, it did nothing still the same. I go ok it's the other way so I do it twice again putting it at the fardest it still off. lol bottom line? your guess is as good as mine. forget about it is my answer.
Great video! Often overlooked, intonation is just as important as any other aspect of setup/ maintenance. I can't tell you how many used guitars I come across that have all the saddles in a perfect line, a tell tale that they didn't intonate the guitar. It's sad because they probably gave up on the instrument without the guitar ever being set up properly and allowed to shine. I just got an Ibanez bass for $100 used that had a terrible setup with high action, a couple high frets, improper intonation, and fret sprout. The guy hated the bass and I probably could have talked him into giving it to me for free. I set it up with the used strings for proper relief, action, and intonation and played it for about 2 weeks to assess the fret needs. I ended up doing a full fret level , crown, and polish and I filed and rounded the fret ends and rolled the fingerboard edge. Finished up with new strings and setup + intonation and I have a gigable $100 bass. I absolutely enjoy the process of bringing an instrument back to life that is so close to being thrown away. The neck is SOOOO comfortable now and the bass really shines. I know it's better than it was new. I get that maintenance is for everyone, and if it's not, that's fair... just make sure your gear gets visits to a qualified tech that will make it all that it can be.
Awesome! That sounds like a fun rehab! I'd like to learn more about fret work, and how to do everything you mentioned. I currently don't know the first thing about it!
@@RobArnoldWorld I learned with UA-cam videos. Just finished my 5th fret level and I see improvement with each project. If you’re looking to do it, pick up a used Squier affinity for $100 and I guarantee the frets need leveling. When you’re done you can give it away or sell it for what you paid. Stew mac’s z file is worth it…. I’m using a 3 corner file and there was certainly a learning curve.
Such a sweet guitar dude - the M1000... But something just struck me... Your signature moidel were based around your RA-3. Always woundered why you'v like the RA-3 over the RA-2??? Hope to some day see a vid on all your custom guitars... 🤘🤘🤘 Martin DK
And the RA 2 and 3 were based off off m1000's! I think I use the RA-3 more, because I like the look of having the pick guard a little bit. That's honestly the only reason I can think of!
@@RobArnoldWorld Tru... But this is just me, but I would mis the the Floyd Rose that the older versions of the M-1000 had. It looks fucking sweet thou... 👌 And it looks cool to... Have an RA-600 my self (that you and Matt signed like 10 years ago. 😁🤘) Just curious...Thought that there some sort of problem with the RA-2 since wee so really get to see that guitar... 👍 🤘🤘🤘
My old tuner had a needle and I found to be very good to use. One thing I'd like to ask you Rob. What is the longest time that you had strings on any of your guitars ? and does it harm the neck of any other part of the guitar with having strings on for a long time .
I like the feel of fresh strings, so on guitars that I play often, I change the strings often. But I have many guitars I don't touch for YEARS, and the strings just sit on them with no issues, other than aging. Guitars are meant to have strings on them, and so they certainly don't mind them. You can leave a set on for decades, and some will say that will only improve the nature of that instrument!🎸
@@RobArnoldWorld Thank you for the reply Rob and asking my Question. Another reason why I asked that Question is that when I had my Hondo guitar I once had a set of strings on this guitar for about 8 to 9 months and it never went out of tune. So I did finally change the strings and the neck needed looking at.
I seem to change tunings quite a lot when learning songs I don’t really use too heavy string gauge but is doing this necessary all the time from changing tunings I’m a complete beginner when it comes too this stuff.
For me it's a feel thing. Regardless of what tuning I'm in, or what gauge strings I'm using, if the strings feel like they're too high off the fretboard (high action), I'll tighten the truss rod to bring them back closer to the fretboard, which is what I like. (low action)
Excellent man! Let me know if you pull the trigger! No pressure, but if you're in the States and could use my link, I'd appreciate it! 👉 imp.i114863.net/LtdM-1000HT
@@RobArnoldWorld thanks man! I sure would, but I don’t qualify for Sweetwaters payment plan, I usually go through AMS, cause I can stretch the payments out to 12 months! They like me there, I’ve bought so much stuff from them in the past few years, I’m talking thousands of $, there plan helped me out a lot to obtain the gear of my dreams!!! I’ve become a huge fan of Chimaira over the past few years also, you guys shred and kick ass!!!
@@RobArnoldWorld Hi Rob! I just ordered this kickass guitar from AMS! They had a “minor blemished” one in stock, got it for $200 cheaper than new, so I really can’t complain! So I have to wait till Wednesday to get it and see if I can find the blemish! Man I can’t wait to get it!!! Keep up the great work man!!!!
I've had this issue with the lowest string where the saddle is as far back as it can go, yet the string is still not fully intonated. It's happened with the last four guitars I've set up. Do you have any tips to remedy that?
I've come across that issue myself in the past! I think it has to do with an usual discrepancy within the combination of your string gauge, desired tuning, and the scale length of your guitar. One of those things, isn't liking one of the other things, and it's causing a situation where the strings scale length needs to be longer than your saddle/bridge setup will allow. An example of this might be that you're trying to tune ultra low, but your string gauges aren't thick enough. Or, the opposite of that. Does any of this sound like what might be causing your issue?
@@RobArnoldWorld I've chosen my gauges based on calculated tension (~22lbs). I also switched brands and don't remember if I had the same issue with the previous brand. In your experience, do I need to try going up or down a gauge?
Could also be the nut is not cut right for the gauge your using. If the strings arnt sitting right then no amount of tuning or intonation adjustments will help much.
Rob , how does changing the neck effect intonation? Should you shoot for 25.5 “ from nut to saddle ? Making sure the distance from but to the 12th fret is the same as 12th to the saddle?
Not sure! I guess that's not the way I think about it. I never take any actual measurements into consideration. Or maybe I'm just misunderstanding your question?
I think that would work well! Sometimes I use the fretted note, and sometimes I use the harmonic. Sometimes both! As for strobe tuners, I know they're the most accurate, but I still prefer my boss and Korg tuners.
Hey Rob quick question. When would I adjust the string height of each saddle? Should it be before or after intonation? Thank again and love the videos 🤟🏼
Yo Mark! Just remember that intonation is always the LAST step. Think of it like the finishing touch. Every adjustment you make, in terms of tuning, neck relief, string height, float, etc.., is then finalized by dialing in perfect intonation. Every adjustment you make, will have an affect on your intonation, so therefor it's always the last step.
Hey Rob! 🤘🏻 I recently purchased this guitar after watching your review on this one. Could you advise which 9v battery should be used for this and how often should it be changed? And what is your opinion on 18v mod for Fishman moderns?
Awesome man! Lately I've been using the Amazon Basics batteries, but you can never go wrong with the traditional heavy hitters like Duracell or Energizer. As long as you always remember to unplug your guitar cable from your guitar after each session, the battery should last a year or more. I've never tried any mods with Fishmans. But I did recently try one with EMG 81's, and you can hear those results here if your interested! ua-cam.com/video/M3xyd_4xNJU/v-deo.html
@@RobArnoldWorld Thank you so much for getting back to me bro! I already saw your video on 24v mod for EMGs and that made me curious for Fishman moderns.. It will be so much helpful for us if you could make a video on Fishman moderns as well..
Hey Rob, I have 12-60 gauge in drop B tuning and I cant intonate the low B without removing the hardtail saddle springs as the tuner goes sharp on the 12th fret. Should I just cut the springs shorter or leave the saddles without the springs? 😅
Yeah man, that's an issue I've experienced too with lower tunings and heavier gauges. I think cutting/shortening that spring would be an interesting experiment to try!
Awesome video helped a ton, question my open and 12th on my low g# on my 7 are lining up good but my 24th fret is still pretty off. What steps do I take to correct this?
Thanks man! Happy to hear it. Typically, the 12th fret is where we're trying to get tuning consistency between the open note, and the fretted 12th fret, because it's the mid-way point, or the happy medium. Trying to get perfect tune at the 24th fret is asking a lot, and so you just want to get as close as possible. The name of the game is getting as close to perfect tune across the entire fretboard that you can. So much of the time, it's all about finding the happy medium. 🎸
Hi, thanks for the great video. My guitar is a multiscale 7 string and it doesn't seem like adjusting the scale length is getting my notes on the higher frets in tune. I even loosened the screw so much that it came off the guitar and the saddle fell on the floor. Is this an indication that I need to adjust my truss rod? I can't see with my eyes if the neck is bowed, but I'm not sure how to check. Thanks.
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with how multi scale guitars function and behave, especially in terms of intonation. Your question though has my gears turning about making a video demonstrating how to look down the neck and what to look for, to help better determine how necessary a truss rod adjustment may be. Please stay tuned!
Hej Rob. What string height do you have? I always hunt for lowest possible action without any buzz, I am also a heavy picker thats why I could never get away lower then 1,75mm with 12-60 in drop c
I've been hearing that a lot and I think it's a matter of whatever gauge you're using, not liking whatever tuning you're using. Finding the right combination of those two things helps them play better together.
As long as you have a fixed bridge, you should be able to do it no problem! This doesn't have anything to do with setups, but if you're interested in learning more about drop tunings, check out this video! ua-cam.com/video/Px3hJZVM8D4/v-deo.html

Hey my pleasure!
Learned a tuning trick the other day on UA-cam,
When you're trying to perfectly tune when intonating for instance,
Switch to the neck pickup and lower the tone knob on the guitar just about 10%
Somehow this gives a much better reading on digital tuners, as if there's less "noise" interfering the signal of the pickup or something like that.
Oh and thanks for the video! helped me a LOT.
Interesting! We'll have to give that a try! And I'm happy to hear you found the video helpful!🎸
I was never really sure what intonation meant, but this video is so well explained, now I understand!!! thanxxx Rob!!!

Nice! Sounds like you've got couple nice guitars!
EMGs over Fishmans all day any day, eh?!!! 😀👍🏼
Thanks Eric, and those are all great tips you mentioned!
I've heard of rolling the tone knob down, but not using the neck pickup when tuning. I'll have to try that out.
@@nckhed ya man it works great!! You’ll notice the needle won’t spike as much. It gives you a more consistent tuning

I’m just getting into guitar playing thank you for this! And I always loved ESP/LTD guitars.

Thanks for a descriptive video on setting intonation!!!
My pleasure!
when lowering the pitch, you should pass the middle a little, and then give it a tiny tug. then tune it UP to pitch. it will help since theres no locking nut ;)
thanks but you did not clearly show the 6th string:) right now I am struggling with this one and ordered a new set of strings to see if I will have better luck with another brand :)
(Yes, I know the app probably isn't as accurate as the real thing, but it's what I have.)
Setting the intonation was a bit of a pain in the ass cuz it's my first time & the heavier strings are harder to set, just like you said, but I FINALLY got green lights for both the open string and the fretted 12th fret on all 6 strings, so that's good enough for me!
Definitely gonna subscribe to your channel! My dream is to someday build & set up my own guitar from scratch using Warmoth parts & now I am this much closer to that goal. 👌

my intonation is off on the A string. I moved the saddle back even to the fardest, it did nothing still the same. I go ok it's the other way so I do it twice again putting it at the fardest it still off. lol bottom line? your guess is as good as mine. forget about it is my answer.
This is SO helpful. Thanks a lot

Thank you for this!
@@sixstringdisciple777 I'll need to know more about your situation before I can answer that. So if you'd like, please tell me about your setup.
Could also be the nut is not cut right for the gauge your using. If the strings arnt sitting right then no amount of tuning or intonation adjustments will help much.
@@daveshank1921 that is definitely possible

A pick, with your own face on it? That's full on meta there!
Or maybe I'm just misunderstanding your question?
trust everyone it gets easy to do once it clicks in your mind i got it damn near perfect
cool video. what are your thoughts on using 12th fret note and 12th fret harmonic with a strobe tuner to intonate?
I think that would work well! Sometimes I use the fretted note, and sometimes I use the harmonic. Sometimes both! As for strobe tuners, I know they're the most accurate, but I still prefer my boss and Korg tuners.
i really need help because the saddle is already super to the left and cant go anymore but the 12th fret is still super flat
Thanks!

@@RobArnoldWorld understood! Appreciate the reply! And thanks again!

I prefer the lowest action possible as well!
Was all going fine until I ran out of screw length on the high E adjusting it so it wasn’t flat on the 12th fret. Oh well, guitar tech it is
I've been hearing that a lot and I think it's a matter of whatever gauge you're using, not liking whatever tuning you're using. Finding the right combination of those two things helps them play better together.
I noticed you are tuned down to a C, what steps are required to set it up your guitar for that type of tuning? Is there any magic involved in that?
As long as you have a fixed bridge, you should be able to do it no problem! This doesn't have anything to do with setups, but if you're interested in learning more about drop tunings, check out this video! ua-cam.com/video/Px3hJZVM8D4/v-deo.html
How about for a headless electric guitar..... 😭?????
