my two favorite metal genres of all time. melodic death metal only being slightly in front because of the emotion. tech death still holds my number one favorite band of all time, revocation.
Indeed, they hold a nostalgic place in me forever. Every time I come back to the December Flower solo I'm blown away and want to give the entire album (Jester Race) a re-visit.
Bro oh my god. I've just recently (past few months) revisited Jester Race for the first time in a good long time. It's now forever in my playlists, it's both crazy nostalgic and is just fantastic.
It's so fucking good, that and Dead Eternity are my favorites. Listened to In Flames for years but recently started going back to checking out the history of artists like I used to back in the day. Its almost hilarious how much better In Flames was in the late 90s compared to now.
I pretty much said exactly what you did as well!! I'm not an overly huge fan of the tech death stuff but I do dabble (into eternity is one that comes to mind) but these guitar players for the tech death scene are phenomenal!

Listening to The Jester Race or Whoracle and in particular to the song Moonshield, it's always like "aaw" and you feel really uplifted and think of good old times. Great track.

As a fond listener of both genres, I think some of the most fantastic bands right now do a bit of both... Savage tech death with melodic elements is a super cool blend. Inferi is one of my absolute favorites. So much talent :D

The Technical Death Metal line up in this one cannot be beaten. Necrophagist, SOP, Soreption, The Faceless and of course the master riffers from Decapitated. I wish Psycroptic was in here, they have insane riffs as well.

Death tech is my favorite metal genre, so happy you played song from the second album of Decapitated, the first album Winds of Creation is excellent too. I love melodic death metal (like Kalmah, Wintersun, Hypocrisy, COB) too but tech is just so impressive and less generic. I would like to see you play some folk metal (Finntroll, Equilibrium, Korpiklaani, Leshak) or brutal death (Dying Fetus, Cryptopsy, Abominable Putridity, Origin, Decrepit Birth)

Moonshield, Everytime I Die, and Slaughter of the Soul are all so beautiful. The tech death riffs are crazy cool but they aren't nearly as pleasurable to my ears. The exception to this rule is Suffocation because they focused first and foremost on playing great music and just so happened to be sick with their instruments. Too many technical metall bands focus on trying to be technical rather than playing great music.
Interesting band picks... Some of these "melodeath" bands are actually MORE *technical* than the "technical DM" bands... ...while some of the "technical DM" bands are actually MORE *melodic* than the "melodeath" bands... :D
Ok last comment. I loved the video, I loved your picks and the way you played them, but I wholeheartedly disagree with your classification of The Black Dahlia Murder and Beyond Creation. It's like someone just told you they are one or the other, and you didn't even question it. I like tech death, and TBDM is my favorite band in that genre along the faceless and decapitated which you featured here, but beyond creation even has Jazz and shit. You could even say it's progressive technical melodic death metal. But it's way more melodic than technical, even though it's very technical. Best band featured here, no question about it.
The tech death riffs are solid, but I like melodic more. Melodeath just has preferable chord progressions, keys, and atmospheres. And is also catchier. The riffs manage to be melodic and catchy while usually being more complex and technically demanding than butt rock riffs, so it's kinda best of both worlds for me.

Not a big fan of death metal but I'll take tech death as it has riffs I won't hear anywhere else, and melodic for me is just kind of boring, however black dahlia slaps since I fuck with their vocals
I used to listen to more melodic death but then I found tech death and it opened up a new world. I feel like tech death tends to be a lot heavier which is what I like. Don’t get me wrong though, melodic death is still a very good genre but just kind of a different experience than tech death

Sure tech death has all the crazy tech side but melodeath will always be king. The atmosphere, the feeling, the sick melodies, it all beats tech death.
My biggest problem with tech death is usually the production. Almost as if it were by some divine decree, the production is always *surgically* clean, and I think every metal genre sounds better with a little organic grit.

The only problem with a lot of modern "tech death," is the artificial sounding drums, which are actually programmed sometimes, and the super glossy production that would make hair bands blush. Suffocation has never fallen victim to that, along with a few others, that kept it more organic.
If they don't overproduce some songs they'd sound like a big mush. In order for us to hear every single instrument they need some serious sound engineering and post-prod. Also I know that's not everybody's cup of tea, but triggered drums have been a huge part of tech death, because their drummers often do 16ths on the bass drum at 240-250 bpm even above. If you don't trigger your drums it'd sound like a solid tone and merge together with the already low - tuned bass and guitars.
@@arch226 First Fragment's Gloire Éternelle is a fantastic tech death album with nice natural sounding production. guitars and drums sound clean but not robotic. the drums in specific sound very pleasing and not harsh whatsoever. i recommend checking it out :)

I used to listen to more melodic death but then I found tech death and it opened up a new world. I feel like tech death tends to be a lot heavier which is what I like. Don’t get me wrong though, melodic death is still a very good genre but just kind of a different experience than tech death

Can't stand melodeath. At the Gates is ok..the rest?, not so much.
Sure tech death has all the crazy tech side but melodeath will always be king. The atmosphere, the feeling, the sick melodies, it all beats tech death.
I tend to prefer tech death myself but melodeath has some bangers as well!
Tech death is masturbatory at times but the brutal stuff is undeniable
My biggest problem with tech death is usually the production. Almost as if it were by some divine decree, the production is always *surgically* clean, and I think every metal genre sounds better with a little organic grit.
@@henryhardfoot This is an issue I have with a lot of more modern metal production, and tech death usually has it the worst. Thankfully older tech death bands don’t have this issue as much

What I learned here is that technical death is metal and melodic death is anime opening theme music
The only problem with a lot of modern "tech death," is the artificial sounding drums, which are actually programmed sometimes, and the super glossy production that would make hair bands blush. Suffocation has never fallen victim to that, along with a few others, that kept it more organic.
Thats the biggest reason why i am not a massive fan of tecken death. It sounds souless because of the overproduction.
If they don't overproduce some songs they'd sound like a big mush. In order for us to hear every single instrument they need some serious sound engineering and post-prod. Also I know that's not everybody's cup of tea, but triggered drums have been a huge part of tech death, because their drummers often do 16ths on the bass drum at 240-250 bpm even above. If you don't trigger your drums it'd sound like a solid tone and merge together with the already low - tuned bass and guitars.
@@NympoGaming i know it's necessary sometimes, but listen to 90s production. Scott Burns etc. It sounds great, but so much less polished.
@@arch226 First Fragment's Gloire Éternelle is a fantastic tech death album with nice natural sounding production. guitars and drums sound clean but not robotic. the drums in specific sound very pleasing and not harsh whatsoever. i recommend checking it out :)
