Well the thing is, when Spotify just started their playlists were exactly like that - they would be a mix of songs you know, songs that you dont know but know the band and then the songs that you dont know from bands you also dont know. At one point they started aggresively pushing podcast and audiobooks and around the same time their playlist became just the songs you already listened, with very little randomization. It's another app that went through enshitification.
I love when their playlist titles aren't even accurate. They made me a playlist titled "Belgian Goblin Mode Metal" or something like that. No bands from belgium, no Nekrogoblikon. Wtf

LUTHARO is one of my favorite underrated bands hands down, saw them with Alestorm and Gloryhammer last year, great show. Each of their songs is in the single thousands of listens and I think I might be like 30% of that.

It denotes any music that has specific sonic characteristics, the main one being heavy distorted guitars which all of these things have. Yes there are varying styles but they’re still heavy metal. To say ‘well this is more power metal or death core’ is an extreme exercise in splitting hairs.
Wristmeetrazor goes haaaard. They've got some industrial softer tracks that don't really check a box for me but Replica Of A Strange Love is a killer album. The guitarist Tyler is the vocalist of Foreign Hands which is one of my fave upcoming bands right now.
