"Heavy metal" has been used as a catch-all umbrella term for all of metal music for ages. And it's usually pretty easy to work out from the context whether it's being used in that sense, or more specifically referring to ye olde meat'n'potatoes traditional metal.
But only for people not actually interested in metal.

something i hate about these spotify playlists is that theyre all curated "for you" so theyre all songs on my playlists already so its impossible to discover new music. they need to make some playlists of their picks instead of stuff i already listen to so i can find new things i might enjoy
Well the thing is, when Spotify just started their playlists were exactly like that - they would be a mix of songs you know, songs that you dont know but know the band and then the songs that you dont know from bands you also dont know.
At one point they started aggresively pushing podcast and audiobooks and around the same time their playlist became just the songs you already listened, with very little randomization.
It's another app that went through enshitification.
I love when their playlist titles aren't even accurate. They made me a playlist titled "Belgian Goblin Mode Metal" or something like that. No bands from belgium, no Nekrogoblikon. Wtf

I don't think necessarily they mean heavy metal as in the sub-genre "heavy metal" but just metal music that sounds heavy

All metal sub-genres are heavy metal genres. Steppenwolf sang 'heavy metal thunder' and Black Sabbath members worked cutting sheet metal. At some point heavy metal stuck and people shortened it to metal.

Exhorder's vocalist is what Phil Anselmo's style was based on in Pantera. Some say Pantera borrowed from Exhorder, with some recordings suggesting they admitted it.
Heavy metal is an umbrella term, doesn’t matter how fast or slow or shouty, whatever. All these different sub genre labels are just not necessary. It’s all heavy metal. It denotes any music that has specific sonic characteristics, the main one being heavy distorted guitars which all of these things have. Yes there are varying styles but they’re still heavy metal.
To say ‘well this is more power metal or death core’ is an extreme exercise in splitting hairs.

Wristmeetrazor goes haaaard. They've got some industrial softer tracks that don't really check a box for me but Replica Of A Strange Love is a killer album. The guitarist Tyler is the vocalist of Foreign Hands which is one of my fave upcoming bands right now.

Good playlist (surprisingly). It is possible to fit all those different subgenres together, but ya gotta curate it specifically so that the old tunes and new tunes will work together instead of sounding jarring. I used to have a playlist where I had Opeth's The Leper Affinity right beside Wheels of Confusion by Black Sabbath and in context it sounded great.
Was there hair metal in that playlist? Cos from this video looks like Spotify missed a lot of party metal that would help make it cohesive.
"Heavy" to some people born directly after midnight of 99 is a range of intensity rather than an era. So for people to say soft metal is basically hard rock nowadays, we really don't have a word for just genuine metal, just that it's heavier than rock.

‘Metal’ is just an abbreviation of ‘Heavy Metal’. It is the whole genre.
What Nik is calling Heavy Metal seems to be a mix of Nwobhm and thrash.
Yeah, they definitely meant "heavy metal" as in the entire genre, not the sub-genre, which, to be fair, is probably how most non-metalheads think of.
Similar to let's say, "porridge" as in all mushy cereal-based dishes, not just specifically oatmeal.
I don't search for genres when I listen to music on Spotify. I search for an artist I already enjoy and then I navigate to what Spotify refers to as that artist's radio. It's basically a computer-generated playlist of songs similar to and including the artist I searched for.
Nik needs to check out a NWOTHM playlist for some truly goated old school metal
LUTHARO is one of my favorite underrated bands hands down, saw them with Alestorm and Gloryhammer last year, great show. Each of their songs is in the single thousands of listens and I think I might be like 30% of that.

The term heavy metal is inconsistent aswell. If we say metallica, anthrax etc. are heavy metal then we say thrash metal is heavy metal. Black Sabbath is more doom/stoner metal and Iron Maiden, well its close to power metal but Id say thats the first pick we could say is truely heavy metal. But the name "heavy" metal is so weird aswell because you wouldn't consider Iron Maiden to be particularly heavy. All in all the term Heavy metal should be reworked.

"Heavy metal" has 2 meanings: 1) classic 80s style old school metal and 2) "metal", just all metal in general. I think spotify used it in the latter sense.

I don't know if it's the same in Canada, but in the US the Heavy Metal playlist on Spotify is one of the Made for You playlists. Which means it would be based on Nik's listening history to an extent. Mine looks a bit different.
The playlist you used is based on your own references. This means that songs that might not belong in the heavy metal genre are there because Spotify thinks you'll like it

"heavy metal" is often used as a blanket term for everything metal and everything that is adjacent to metal. So yea, if we're building a generalized metal list, it's going to include a bit of everything, and it will include stuff that sounds like metal, like grindcore or hard rock.

Tbh if im talking to my friends that don't listen to heavy music I just describe everything as heavy metal or hardcore because they will generally have an idea of what they are, i cant be asked remembering the hundred or so sub genres of music and trying to explain them to people who dont really listen to heavy music. If you ask most of these bands what genre of music they play, they will just say metal anyway.
