In Thailand one of the guys dropped his hands all the time so they made a band around his head holding his hands up and he was only allowed to block for some rounds. Don't know if this really helps bit it looked very funny for sure
I always tell kids they should think about a spring. Before thinking about the punch connecting, they should see how the hand is gonna come back to the same place the punch is gonna be thrown, like a spring coming back to the natural position. Repeating this speech every class, helps me to generate that habit and sooner or later it becomes natural in them.
Another great video . Another way is to put the sleeve of the boxing glove between elbow and side of your body without falling down , this keeps your hand up and keeps your elbows in to stop you flaring 👍🥊
I always tell my class to bring their hands back to their face every time... I touch the glove to my cheek on the way back. Still possible to have that problem where it 'loops back' but it helps. "Chin down, shoulder's up, hands back to the face, elbows in, stay relaxed while you do it..." can you do a video on sparring someone who is overly focused on landing a big right hand? (overhand right, straight cross, right uppercut)... i.e. they jab light, loading up the big right hand, but they're fast/strong, and it goes right through the block/catch (jarring). You can circle away to your right to avoid, but what about punishing someone trying to load up the monster right hand?
One time I was watching this one fight and the announcer said something along the lines of "When you throw out the spear, make sure you're holding up the shield." That's a good way of remembering tip 3.
His acceint is called a Maccum acceint(Sunderland)if you are a geordie from (Newcastle) Northeast of England Gods country, great to see a lad from my neck of the woods, training the stars in Hollywood lol,
Yes, this is one of my biggest issues. I do more kickboxing than anything else and I have this habit of dropping my hands when my leg comes up. I think the drill with holding a glove to my face might be a very good thing for me to start doing.
I've been boxing for over 6years not because I want fight, I have no intention in fighting but I do it because I love it and because my boxing gym is closed due to lock down I've been watching these videos just to keep me going.. Keep it up.
Tony your absolutely right, I corrected this problem by bringing back my thumbs to bottom of my chin on every punch, it's easy to remember and works like a charm
Tony: here is your biggest fan from Argentina. I use your drills and try to put some of myself to my classes. I hope we can meet someday because I know I have a lot to learn from you. You are enthusiastic, pedagogical, talented and experienced. It's difficult to find those four things together.
Men is incredible how you have a video for everything in boxing, at first i only knew how to throw punches and that only, but thanks to you i learned so much about boxing in general, literally 70% of the things i know is thanks to you and i just wanted to thank you because you are a GREAT teacher, from Paraguay🇵🇾
Cheers Tony, wicked info.. I'm gonna learn the art through you, scene as we're locked down over here. I'm gonna get fit and learn the art of the sport I've had a passion for. I did box a bit when I was younger, nothing special, then life gets you, you have no time, and what time you do have you spend on other things. Now I have all this time on my hands, I'm gonna learn to use them properly. Thanks you idiot proof translation of the art one love Tony and maximum respect💪🏻
This is exactly what I am struggling with in my sparring sessions. Is there a video on how I can get more use to getting hit or what is the advice you can give on getting hit and not get a slight fright when being punched? Thanks Tony.
Tony - I asked this exact question months ago on several other channels. When I was a kid I saw many boxers in the 70's and 80's (Kronk gym fighters like Hearns etc) do the touching of the nose. I knew it was a drill to keep the hands up but was told on other channels that it was just a bad habit from fighters sparring and moving their head gear up. Thanks for clearing this up FINALLY!!!!
Thank you coach! I use a rubber ball instead of a glove. I like the nose touching thing as like a tertiary method to train yourself to remember to get your hands up!
Alright Tony, bit off topic but could you do a video on how you would balance resistance training alongside bag work and sparring please? No danger of becoming the next world champ just train because I like it but I’d like to hold on to as much muscle as possible. Thanks your your great content as always 👊🏼
Great advices 👊🏻 I don't do the old school method but when I started to learn the basics (without gloves), the coach always said to put my thumb on my cheekbone, so you always force yourself to come back in the right position and once you put on the gloves it's a reflex...not always but..😉 i have to stay focused 🥊
Great tips! Another thing that helped me keep my hands up was to spar because getting hit will raise the stakes and really get you to keep your hands up......BUT I do have to preface, as a beginner I did this with trusted sparring partners who knew how to go the right amount of light to not murder me!
Thank you mate for the tips...i got a lot of problems with my right hand. I Will try to record myself and correct my mistake. Get more videos please! 😀😀😀
Another tip I’ve heard, I think from Shane fazen, was to keep the opposite hand up on your eyebrow. When your punching think about your other hand touching your eyebrow. It’s kind of like the nose strategy from this video but less visible. Keep that hand up to your eyebrow and tuck them elbows in! Great video! Helped a lot!
So I noticed this and have been working on it. I came to the conclusion that part of the reason for dropping hands is the instinct to see whether the punch you just threw had its desired effect. You know, punch - review - punch again. Something that helps me is to train with a much taller opponent in mind as it makes me hold my hands higher to punch at his height.
Thank you very much, Tony, i train and watching your videos every day and i can see results. Keep doing. BTW: I'm sorry if ive got some mistakes in text, i'm from eastern Europe.
When working with my coach and pads, he'd just smack me up side my head when I dropped a hand. I learned faster than with, "Keep your hands up, Jack!" ;-) Another thing he had me do was shadow box single punches for whole rounds with relatively heavy weights (e.g. 5 kg). You will learn quickly to bring your non-punching hand back to rest with your hand up at your face, elbows as tight in as possible, because this is the least work. It feels very unnatural at first (because it is). It takes a while to loosen your shoulders up. When you get it, it keeps you compact with your guard mid between high and low, and when you punch you will keep your non-punching hand tight to your body because it is the least effort (least centrifugal force). You learn this particularly quickly when you're punching while holding heavy weights.
Another great video . The touch the nose , reminds me of the 90’s Tyson arcade game every opponent had a “thing” that alerted you it was the moment to punch 🤛🏼 them 😂
Great videos, man. I'm from Brazil, beginning my boxing training, and I have watched your videos many times so far. Love the didactics and the edition. Congrats!
Haha when I was like 7 years old my trainer used to tape my hands to my head seriously ha. Then when throwing punches used to say it’s like punching through a tube or tunnel. Great video bro.
First of all thanks for sharing. For the past two years I’ve worked boxing into my workouts and your tips have helped me. The “keep your hands up” is the one thing my trainer always seems to say to me. lol I have gotten a little better but I’ll now have to try that glove tip. Thanks again
Just started boxing, and i did not expect to keep my hands up or the "bring back" is a skill i have to work on and develop from years to come. Many Pro boxers today still struggles with it , like Ryan Garcia, GGG and many more
Hello mate its me again, I don't think you saw my comment last video so I popped in early this time. Could you please do a video on how to: Set up KO shots and execute them, eg. the Mexican set up Cheers for being here in these times, I can't thank you enough for being the coach that I needed and I hope to see more good videos coming out!🥊🥊🥊
Another tip i know is holding your ear. Teddy Atlas said that in a video where he had his guys drill it for 10 minutes straight shadowboxing with their right hand holding their ear. Not pulling!! Just Holding.
Yeah tony has some great videos for everything in boxing. Just have a look at his channel. Every video is great and short you will not waste your time :)
Thank Tony! A lot of the tips I find for keeping hands up are mostly relevant to the right hand (orthodox). I tend to drop my lead hand. Does it still make sense to hold a glove to my face with my lead hand? Any other techniques specific to the lead hand?

I'm so guilty of hand dropping. Sometimes it helps to slow down your combinations. Work back up to full speed when you have canned the habit
The glove drill will now be a regular part of my routine.

Wow love that glove idea. Going to try that now the next hour. Thanks Tony
I see Pros making the mistake of consistently dropping guard, too. (recently, noticeably, Ryan Garcia)
Also he's very upright. Although fast hits hard etc
If garcia masters even a reasonable defence, he can be deadly, he has vicious ko power
Ryan Garcia will be the next Glass chin
