Echo is a perfect counter-balance to Jocko's inspiring insanity. He always brings it down to the level of a "normal human being" and gets Jocko to peel back the layers and look at it from that point of view as well. Very lucky to be able to watch these two gentleman converse so often.

@@dehvun7 I agree with you. There's nothing wrong with movies/tv/video game, as long as they are not ruining other parts of your life. What if you spend so much time practicing jiu jitsu or exercising, that you get bad grades, lose relationships, get fired, etc.? Then even something as positive as those can be bad. As a guitarist myself, I have seen people fail college because they would rather play guitar than go to class.

    • @Zeppelin0731
      @Zeppelin0731 2 роки тому +4

@@lucabaki No. Video games can have meaningful lessons, and impactful narrative arcs in and of themselves. They can, in fact, be works of art. There are things that you can get from them that you wont find in other places. You just have to know where to look, and be open minded enough to receive it. Like I said above, maintaining a healthy balance is key.

Every single time I listen to this podcast I am amazed at how unbelievably full of useful, practical, and necessary information every single podcast has. I even imagine every podcast at the start will be the one that is a disaster and I am instantly proven wrong within the first 5 minutes of every single podcast. For people that think they have a seemingly meaningless job, responsibility, or thing that needs attended to. I pray you stumble upon jockos podcast and you can fill supposed useless time with the extraordinary advice jocko, echo, and the many distinguished guests have to offer.

The lunch discussion is real. The social pressure to eat with my team is real. It's like, "we're going to lunch" and people will wait for you to get to from your desk. Thing is, at the company I work at, we have a chef and lunch is free, so there's more pressure because if you don't want to eat free food cooked by the in house restaurant, you're not only breaking the team dynamic, but surely there must be something wrong with you. I found another intermittent faster and try to get on his schedule a bit.
I've put on a few pounds since starting about a year ago, but the one saving grace to the situation is that we have a park with a few paths around a lake connected to the building, so we also take a 1-2 mile walk after lunch and I've found I can defer lunch and tell the rest of my team I'll join them for the post-lunch walk. Still, when I first started working where I'm at, it took me a while to figure out how to navigate the situation.

The story about the Upa drill reminded me of why I picked one BJJ school over the other. The reason I passed on the one I did was because during the trial class, the junior instructor (late teen blue belt) asked if anybody in the group had any prior knowledge of BJJ. I raised my hand & said I knew the Upa drill, front-to-back. He looked at me like I had an arm growing outta my head & said he'd never heard of that. He then proceeded TO WALK THE GROUP THROUGH THE UPA DRILL, but he called it some 6 or 7-word long absurdity of a name. I shook my head, finished the class & chose the competing school.

I got rhabdo. Kidney failure. Pissed brown with blood. Started going blind. The worst feeling. Mouth completely dried out and could not salivate no matter how much water I drank. 3 days in the Hospital. Creatinine Kinase level 40,000. It takes forever to get back to normal and get after it again. Mentally you hesitate to go as hard. Finally recovered now and hittin hard again. Make sure you stay hydrated, fully nourished and get sleep. If you're cutting, be careful. Pay close attention to yourself.

I think that any activity that requires mental focus, attention and problem solving is productive and or beneficial for the brain (in certain respects). Discipline goes hand and hand with that type of process whether the process is for work or leisure. It’s when the brain is idle and not having to be used, that counter productivity arises; binge UA-cam fail vids, hours of mindless TV.

I wouldn't dismiss mindless entertainment like funny videos, this kind of relaxation helps to fight the unresolved stress levels.
I think If you watch it in moderation it's very beneficial.
I found that the best approach is to:
    1. Watch some of it when you are very tired to regain motivation,
    2. Focus on enjoying the videos, don't think about wasting your time,
    3. As soon as your energy level's up, go back to doing some more important stuff.

Jocko mentioned The Office and mentioned organizational hierarchies. I read a book called The Gervais Principle by Venkatesh Rao which is all about the organizational hierarchies in The Office tv show and how it applies in real life. It was a fascinating book.

I build houses and you are hungry 24/7. Lotta ham sandwiches, jerky, gatorade, potato salad and granola type bars. I always have a big can of mixed nuts in my truck. Coffee, coffee, coffee haha

Some good advice here, I've been a female in a beginner's marital arts classes and all the guys want to do is take out their frustration on someone else - they often even get extra aggressive with females as we get to be a stand in for every woman that's ever turned them down. So thank you for making it ok for women to not have to go through that nonsense.

Q: Does focusing on a single subject inhibit creativity
    A: No
And coming from a genuinely creative person, everything Jocko said was accurate and the example he used with Jimmy Page was an excellent choice. You want to get good at something, crack down on it. Become proficient in multiple worlds and bring them together.
Another thing I would like to add is: learn how to learn. Learn how to break new things down and find ways to see the key aspects that construct (x) topic
