      柯羽书Inge Van Keirsbilck that a continuous process to me about knowing your body. sometimes its hard to tell. if your not sure, you should probably stop or slow down. if youve never even been slightly hurt, your most likely not ever pushing that hard, which is bad to me because your not learning about your capabilities.

    I tried doing the Jocko Willink posting 4am pictures of my watch before working out. I did this for a week and was both mentally and physically exhausted everyday. My mind and body were not prepared for this kind of activity. I failed and realized that you have to be a little realistic with your goals and ease into it. You have to harden both your mind and body first. This takes time. Now I wake up around 6-7am everyday and start my day. Keep in mind 6 months ago I was a depressed, overweight alcoholic. I would wake up around 12pm and stuff my face and working out was barely in the equation. 6 months later and I am both mentally and physically prepared to wake up at 6am and get my day going. Who knows how long itll take to get used to waking up at 4am like Jocko, but guess what its gonna take time and easing into it. Build your good habits over time and youll see results. My 2 cents.

    I went ALL IN. Got fat at a desk job - went suit shopping for my buddy's wedding - ALARMING.
    Next day - lifting, whole foods (animals and plants), food scale, macros, 5-6 days a week in the gym lifting HEAVY and getting after it.
    I fall into the level 9 category.
    1 month in - down almost 15 pounds.
    Holding the line everyday. On the offensive and getting aggressive.

      @@ryanstoyles7611 I think it might be more correct to say that Echo has a much more realistic view of what a normal person is like. Most people will fail miserably if they attempt to radically alter their diet and lifestyle in the way that Jocko is suggesting. Jocko is a freak of nature - he can handle that kind of stuff. Most people cannot. And so the path to success for many is one in which small, iterative changes are made over a longer period of time so that their brain has time to acclimate to the new normal, and accept. This is why "diets" fail so often and people gain back weight they lost. They went hard in the paint for 1-3 months but their brain wasn't ready to adopt that as the new normal.

    I hate to contradict Jocko, but I just lost a ton of weight making a bunch of small changes over time.
    100% Echo’s way. I focused on a few things at a time, and added more as I mastered one.
    For instance: I was eating Wendy’s twice a day. Then I decided one Wendy’s salad and one burger. Then focused on I’m eating at home breakfast and one other meal a day. Then started tracking my food and made it a game to hit certain numbers... Wendy’s eventually took care of itself.

      I can agree with that. I remember someone referring to your lifestyle changes like building a house, one brick at a time. Each brick is either a habit or some change in behavior.

      Amen -- I'm a big believer that bad habits need to be replaced, they can't just be eliminated or else you have a big vacuum to fill and are likely to relapse.

      I love Jocko but I know most people, including myself, lack the discipline to just quit all the bad habits. Small changes here and there will do wonders. replace soda with gatorade and then later on water to get the ball rolling

      You're probably healed by now, but helps to work out DOMS lightly, every day or so, also stretch it lightly every few hours to keep blood flowing to it.

      The kind of labor I do you need fuel, I can eat basically whatever I want and still not gain weight, stuck at 185, my body is capable of gaining weight because I've been 250 before but I walk about 10-15k steps everyday at work which is about 7 miles and I'm constantly moving heavy shit, if I don't eat for a day my body is going to be extremely upset

      @@sangyedorje After eating only once a day for a good while and being in shape, I had to give up smoking marijuana. I started binge eating, stopped exercising, and got a desk job when I was previously standing/walking for 10 hours a day at work. One year in, it was NOT easy to not eat for a day. It took easing into it and trying and failing a few times to finally do it. This is not an objective thing.

    I think Echo's approach is more realistic for most people. Most folks who go on the New Years Resolution path, and suddenly start going to the gym all the time and abruptly go from eating junk food to salads and grilled chicken, will very quickly get tired of it and relapse.
    On the other hand, for most people, if you make small change that isn't dramatic, and keep at that until it feels normal, then make another small change and keep at it until it feels normal, then another, and another, that will keep them on the path.

    I like the plan in the book "One Meal at a Time". Basically it says to get control over each meal one at a time. Get control over breakfast. Once you have that locked in, then work on lunch, then on to supper.

    To get back in shape i started doing pushups, once i could do 40 without stopping i started running, realized i couldnt run the distance i wanted. So i walked it, two miles every other day. Now i can maintain a steady jog the first mile and i sprint/walk the second. But eating right is the biggest change, eggs and spinach are the biggest part of my diet. And depending on what your addiction is foodwise, cutting sugar and carbs are the things you need to do, those were the hardest for me. Sugar is more addicting that cocaine 😂ive gone from 240-205 from feb 8th to april 17th

      jamie myant sticking to it is the key! Im 195 right now and im building muscle, running two miles for time now. No step forward is too small as long as its in the right direction!

    Ease into it. Imagine "small goals" are a small wheel. One complete revolution of that small wheel is a goal achieved. If you start off with "big goals" (big wheel), you are not going to be strong, disciplined and confident enough to even make one revolution. START SMALL. The more victories of small and consistent goals is going to make you upgrade you wheel size and quality so you can start taking harder paths full of resistance and obsticales (those are tougher goals). You gonna drive a mountain bike through a thick, muddy, sandy steep uphill trail? No, you are going to say "some day but I am not advanced enough for that right now". You are going to hit that path once you have a "dirt bike". Then you take that once you got that "dirt bike" through upgrading yourself through small goals. Crawl before you walk, walk before you run, run before you fly.
    I was once an obese 300lb guy who literally dreamed of doing pullups. Then I'd wake up from that dream and instantly feel the reality of the weight on my aching bones. Decided to lose 100 pounds, one day, decided to try some pullups. Did 2. Only 2 but I was so happy to see the potential from this small victory.Then said fuck it, I want to he a Marine. Did more and more.. Got bootcamp ready and I am now a United States Marine. Just get at it people. The only thing stopping you is you. Start small. Evolve body mind and spirit. Help others who dont have faith in themselves. People who bully are posers who feel strong. They are not. People who lead the weak are. Remember weight loss or strength is just a product of your habits.. Dont focus on the mirror or the scale. Focus on the health of your mind and discipline. The weight will come off as an aftermath of your changes.

    I had to quit the gym in order to lose weight and get into shape. I know this sounds counter intuitive, but for me... I made two huge mistakes in the gym. The first was I never worked out unless I went to the gym - which I was always really great at planning and not good at going, even though I paid for the gym for years and years and years. The second thing I did wrong was, when I did go to the gym, I always tried to do too much and would end up overdoing it and get hurt. Which would, of course, perpetuate my avoidance of the gym. At my heaviest, I weighed 350lbs and I quit the gym and started walking. Last week, I ran my 42 full marathon.

      this.....i got back into shape once i realized that i don't like going to the gym enough to go there everyday. i needed something i could do at home. pushups, pull ups, light weight squats, bike rides, walks and runs. this got me into a routine. now i go to the gym on the weekends to supplement the calesthinics

      Kayla Goodwin I just completed day 61 on Beachbody. I love working out at home. Also youth - I will admit - this is a new thing for me. I've never been this successful at it before. I agree. Home workouts are great. But I still walk - run too.

    I think they are both right. For me, it was slow, gradual, incremental improvement. Change what you can. Think small. I got that from Jordan Peterson. But let me tell you, after a year and a half a of slow gradual changes, my life is unrecognizable from what it was. You still have to get after it and push yourself, but don’t aim too high. Change what you can every day. A little bit a a time. Aim up.

      Yep. Got told I had fatty liver - you could have hit me with a hammer and it wouldn't have been as effective for my motivation. Now? I go at it. Diet is different; exercise regime in place; mindset is different; and I'm looking to beat it. 👍

    These guys are legit. I listen to them every now n then n I get inspired everytime. One thing they forget is that while on ur path thru this journey, there will be lots of people trying to discourage u, hoping u fall off. Nvr give them that satisfaction, just say fuck it then do it. Everyday it gets easier, u only get stronger. Once u fall off, u have to restart. Remember that.

    Hey Jocko! thought id add my story to this list. I started off last year just shy of 340 lbs stuck working a desk job and through an intense keto diet and slowly ramping up my exercise routines weekly i was capable of losing 140 lbs in just 8 months! For me, the hard core level 9 diet rework is what i needed.

    15 years of old, I know currently setting at 189lb, use to weigh 250-260. It was a slow process, started running because of track in 7th grade, started weight lifting lightly, and continue to run on my own. I gained weight back during Covid was back at 215-20, but after spending time with a great family during the death of a close friend that will always be part my family, I got started on keto because of them, and I haven’t looked back since. I enjoy being n keto so much, I’ve stepped off for Mother’s Day, but got back on the next day. I believe I’m uncommon among below common. You keep me reminded that there is no stopping always getting better!

    Just discovered Jocko today, these podcasts are getting me through a 12 hour shift doing nothing behind a desk.
    Former LEO, 27 years old, been off the job for 3 years, I had a bowel disease that tanked my career and left me basically disabled for the first year of that time.
    Now I’ve recovered to a base level of functionality, but that period has left me with awful diet and exercise habits.
    I’m active, not fat or anything, and I try to watch my junk food intake, but I’m nowhere near as fit as I used to be.
    Monday I’m gonna try this fasting thing, my girlfriend got me an appointment with her nutritionist/personal trainer for my birthday, and they gave me a plan, so maybe that will be the key to sticking to it this time.
    I’m also going back to finish my degree, and getting in touch with my old work contacts. I got derailed for sure, but I want to be successful again. I want to be a force for good.

    I think with diet Jocko is damn right, cold turkey is the way. With working out, try to hit the gym and get a baseline, see what your 1 is and what your 10 is. Go level 6 or 7 Monday-Thursday and level 9 on Friday so you have the weekend to recover. This is what I like to do.

    About 18-24 months ago I slipped 5 discs in my back, subsequently put on a bunch of weight. When I decided to get my act together (thanks Jocko!) I was somewhat limited by what I could physically do, but something I COULD and did do was get my diet fixed, and that's something everyone can do, no matter what your level of physical activity. Subsequently lost 25 kg, about 55 pounds to you Americans, while not being able to exercise much. Also feel far better, more alert, less fatigued, sleep better, blah blah blah, all the good stuff.
    Being physically active to the fullest extent possible is of course very important, but equally important is fueling the machine properly, so always approach nutrition seriously.

    I hadn't ran in over a year, and decided to give it a go last monday. I'm on trt so I wanted to know how I'd do. I ran (jogged) 12 miles. Stopped once in the first half mile, felt lactic buildup, and said no. Time to go. I never got tired, and actually ran harder after mile 5.
    I couldn't walk down stairs without pain until the following monday. That was dumb.

    About diet: 38 years old here, and I went 100% from day one, and while the first 4 or 5 days are hard, it's wonderful for your ego. The perception you CAN go back to being a reasonably working humanoid from your gelationous, lazy self, is amazing.
    Me, I started to drink a Dr. Rhonda Patrick smoothie every day and only ate animal protein for 2 weeks (4 red meat, 10 white meat meals a week). After that I started reinserting good quality carbo and fats. While doing 8/16h intermitent fasting.
    Yeah, I had 2 cheat meals a week after 2 months, but the initial break woke me up.
    Yeah, my gut biome went mad. I had some days I had to go to the bathroom 4 times, others I couldn't do it at all. But I feel SO much better after 6 months. I lost 16 kg (35 lbs), practice MT again like in my youth and even my work is better because I'm less stressed and annoyed by my lack of capacity to rationally manage my own body.

    Portion control to start off when your trying to lose weight worked for me. I understand jocko mentality and mind set about stopping everything completely. I think the key point was "personality" you know yourself so whatever works for you.
    Me personally I started off portioning and working out, when I saw the weight loss results I started not wanting to really eat that stuff anymore. I do have a cheat day but only 1 thing

      Yeah, it all depends on the person. I don't handle cold turkey well with certain things but some habits require me to go cold turkey otherwise I fall off the wagon and go right back. I cannot "occasionally" partake.

    Thanks to Joko and Echo laying down reality like a lead carpet, suffocating doubt. I managed to shed 6 stone (UK here), 84 pounds and still losing. First I corrected my diet. I never shop past the fruit and veg section, done the plant based diet for now, just while I'm shedding flab. I started moderate cycling for an hour a day. 30 mins out and then turn back, easy for the mental side of it. Now I have just managed to run 3 miles for the last month. I start Jiu Jitsu next month. Work commitments have kept me away from BJJ. Joko and Echo are doing the real great work. keep it up lads.

    Few months ago I was basically bed bound. Crawled if I had together around my apartment. Lost ALL muscle.
    Started by stretching on the floor, then heel to toe exercises sitting on a chair, then bum lifts, half as$ed situps on my bed. Now joined the gym. Starting with resistance machines and floor stuff. Still can't hardly walk the stairs because having all weight on one leg at a time and my legs give way.

    I can't wait to improve. The thought excites me and that is keeping me motivated. The feeling of muscles burning good but /not overdone and wrecked) the next day is kind of addictive. 🎉🙌

    It’s true. You have to start small. I remember when I truly decided I was gonna get into running track when I was young. Started with a mile. The goal was...by the next week I’ll be running two, without stopping. The next week, the goal was another mile but it wasn’t pertinent. If I wasn’t feeling it, I wasn’t feeling it...but I promised myself I’d always push it. The key was how you felt and your diet on any given day. In due time I was running five miles around the track...at high, consistent speed, every night. What those who don’t know don’t tell you is that when you run long distance every mile is different, but physically and psychologically. Occasionally did sprints but lived for long distance. That was when I was a kid in high school. Thereon, competed at a high level in all sports and ended up joining the US Marines and kicking ass in the Grunts. One step, one mile at a time folks. 😉👍

    Outside of having a medical condition or an extreme health/weight issue - fasting a full 24 hours is very doable. I've been doing it once a year since I was a 13 year-old. Ask anyone who's Jewish, we've been doing it for millennia ;-] If 13 year-old kids can do it, basically anyone can. Hope this is helpful/useful for anyone who wants to try fasting.

    There is such a thing as carbs withdrawal. If you're used to eating carbs and you decide to cut a ton of it out of your diet. You may end up getting headaches and feeling sick. Might last a couple days. Might be good to start slowly getting it out of your diet. That way you're more likely to stick to it.

    I'm a former Marine and got sick of my gut and how I looked overnight. I wasn't that big, but I went ham overnight. Working out 6 days a week. Got back in shape in like a month.
    I had a hernia like 9 months later, but I had surgery and recovered still working out 5 days a week.

    Between 2006 and June 2018 I averaged out the amount of energy drinks I had overall: 2600. I was addicted.
    Then I listened to the Tim Ferris & Impact Theory podcast where he stresses that everything is a choice.
    I quit drinking energy drinks in June this year.
    Easier to quit diet habits than it is to start an exercise habit. At least for me.

    Great Army basic training story ... at the time of this story we platoon was more than 2 months into training down at Ft Bening GA. And our Drill Sgt’s marched us to the shopette where we were getting haircuts. The march was about 1.5 miles. At the end our Drills ask us if we wanted to get ice cream. We were like YYEEEEEEES!!! Since we been only eating hot meals, MRE’s and DFAC food for 2 months this would be a treat. Most of us ordered and that ice cream was like heaven. As we waited for our Drills to form us up a few guys started feeling “Bubbling “ in our stomachs the. A few turned to half then all of us. We stated getting the affect of eating healthy army food and now we put this sugary goodness and our bodies shut down. We got in formation and our Drills were cracking up!!! In formation double timed back to the barracks. They could not fall us out fast enough when we all got in the latrine even the “love shack” was utilized LOL ... we destroyed the latrine.

    I love fasting. On any other type of diet, I find it really easy to cheat on any given day, especially when there is free food at work. Fasting is black and white, and is really easy for me to stick to. No way to rationalize breaking a fast until the time has come.

      Reflux and lightheadedness? These are my two biggest issues when trying to intermittently fast. Only way to combat them, to a degree is something like this: eat a small dinner and then go to sleep around 4 hrs later (before I start getting super hungry). I have to basically sleep through the hunger pangs around the 8-9 hr period of not eating; otherwise, I get heartburn and end up eating shit anyway.

    I took big steps in two stages. Started going to the gym on January 4, 2017 (heavy weight lifting 4-5 days a week), started on a keto diet on February 1 (in front of the fridge with a garbage can throwing out food I bought a few days before). Right now I'm down 145 pounds. Still got a little ways to go but I found something that I can stick with and actually enjoy. I also do 16/8 intermittent fasting pretty much every day, with extended fasts occasionally (I've done up to 48 hours, actually set a PR in the gym a bit over 30 hours in the last time I did this).

    I have tried level 9 a couple times after long bouts of laziness. I don’t recommend it. I have ended up with rabdo (rhabdomyolysis) a couple times and it sucks. Dial it up to level 5 for a few days then go all in. Ego makes it hard to dial it back but it is important, rabdo can cause damage to your body.

    I'm not a fan of Jocko's podcast because I recently just gotten into it. But this right here made me respect him even more than I could say. He understood that Echo has made a good point and he also accepted his side as the truth. This is an example of a healthy discussion and disagreement. He backed down and assumed responsibility that both sides can be right. This is subtle or maybe I'm dramatising it but there is no need for one side to win all the time and all answers aren't necessarily black and white.

      Good observation. It's about picking battles .
      Had a conversation with a friend I haven't spoken to in a long time and it got to politics. I know we have some fundamental differences of opinion. I decided that the conversation and friendship was worth more than abstract ideas.

    I just launched into working out. I pulled a muscle in my back and could barely walk to I did small exercises that didn't require much movement with a resistance band. There is always a way around it.
    I started waking up a lot earlier too. It sucked for a few days, but it got easier as I kept doing it.

      They come in a resealable bag, and it makes no sense. Once you open the bag they are gone.

    After my little sister passed away, we ate out a lot for the next few years and I put on a lot of weight. Turned 18 than went out to the bar every weekend on top of that. Halfway through 20 and I can happily say I haven’t ate any fast food this year and have made improvements on my physical activity. I have a long way to go but feel so much better! Good luck to whoever wants to make changes in their life

    I appreciate Echo Charles approach. He seems more understanding of the struggles and has a lot more mercy that Jocko. If Echo was my trainer/coach, he'd probably get more out of me.

    When great minds like Jordan Peterson, Jocko and GSP's head coach Firas Zahabi all say that the key is to smart small and incrementally build up in order to build a consistent habit, then it's probably true.

    I always do the level 3 cruise for a week or two depending on my training split, this gets everything accustomed to the motions and stresses again without a risk of DOMS. Then i proceed to level 5 and if i get DOMS at that point it's not crippling and i can easily manage to train through it and by week 4 I'm right back where i was at the beginning and it's just a matter of getting back any of the numbers i may have lost.
