  • Quarantine had me itching for a cost-effective and fun modification for my 2017 Mk7 Golf Sportwagen with Unitronic Stage 2. UA-cam led me to a few basic Air Box modifications which yield little power gains but require no additional parts or pieces and just a little bit of my time.
In this video, I'll be tweaking the stock Air Intake Duct which leads to the airbox to allow airflow on both sides of the front grill and will leave the engine air pass-through unblocked (other examples you'll see will block this off using the OEM European block off plate or other means).

I did this mod but, instead of using a Dremel, I just used an X-Acto knife. The plastic is VERY soft. If you just score it (make light cuts where you want the holes) the plastic will break off along those cuts.

That was most likely blocked off to prevent water getting directly into the intake.

Dad's.... I enjoyed the execution, cutting plastic and sanding, cleaning. Fine work! I missed the before and after comparison, both for sound and visual. Having said all this, that music was atrocious.... I'm all for rock and roll, can't handle that.

Felt like I was in a strip bar with the music lol, good job tho,I used that Christmas tree drill bit to make holes in mine,it leaves clean round holes, also why I didn’t open mine up completely was because I felt that possible water could get in if driving in heavy rain,I didn’t want to be worried about that if I did get stuck in a big downpour, you should be ok tho

This is a dumb idea....NOT TO DO! Hahaha. I love the airflow graphic at 1:22 and you did a great job cleaning it up. Nice impact driver too ;) I think the R might be getting this treatment along with some other low-cost intake improvement mods as done by Ricky. ua-cam.com/users/RICKY720psearch?query=intake

Thanks for checking it out and thanks for the comment. Suspension is next for me. Trying to select the right setup - there are just sooo many factors. I can tell you even a stage 1 tune from APR or Unitronic is totally worth the spend. You will not be disappointed. It does get expensive if you have the DSG, because you should really do both ecu and TCU tunes for the best experience.

I was too but haven’t had any issues. Drove all winter with it, and many have as well. The filter has container has a snow grate and the filter should trap moisture. I have a cold air intake now, and this would seemingly have similar issues. But none to speak of.

You don’t need to upgrade the airbox at all. If you do the snow guard mod, and the cut out here in this video with a drop in filter, intake hose and turbo inlet pipe, there are no differences. Honestly keeping the stock box is better for heat. Cold air intakes aren’t that cold. You would just be sucking in hot air.
