*Hey all! Thanks for checking out this new video. It a long one, but I'm hopeful it will be helpful to many of you. Be sure to check out the HELPFUL TIPS section. This video took a ton of work, but happy to get it out to all of you now. Hit me up with your question in the comments.*
The “Magic stick” recommendation was clutch. I was singing the 50 cent song every time I used it. I bought a little bit driver from Amazon that got lots of use. Someone mentioned putting the screw back where they belong as you remove from another video. That was a great organization tip. It’s a more fun car with it. The 1.8t is no low end torque monster but she pulls pretty good up top!
18:49 funny... when I bought my GTI after a 2008 Rabbit, there were times (early on) when I thought my Rabbit felt quicker... I think it's similar to what you're describing here.
Very nice first time write up on the turbo replacement, about to replace my turbo since it decided to let go, I've made notes of your tips they'll certainly help me out.
Great video so excited for you both on the car and on the family bits. Your description of driving the 38 is spot on. The IS20 is more abrupt on the lower end but dies off sooner. Again...nice work dude.
Good to see a video where they don't remove the dp. It actually makes me feel a lot more confident I could do this. ADD makes reassembly after a job SO DAUNTING and having it possible, on awd, makes me think i'ma do this myself. Probably going is20 though. Not sure I can pass inspection with a high flow catalytic converter in NJ.
Love the video man, can’t wait to get mine to where yours is. Are you going to do some performance oriented videos about the IS38, such as 0-60 times and just general acceleration? I’d love to see that. Not much IS38 videos out for wagons.
Thank you for the tips am honesty. I liked when you said that it took you 1.5h to remove a coolant line, many UA-cam videos make it seem like a 2 min thing when to average people (me) take us a good amount of time and frustration because it should be a 2 min thing right? Yeah right… ;-)
Haha - Not a problem my friend. There was a good amount of time standing and scratching your head asking... "ok, so what's another way to get at this bad boy."
Pro tip: Don’t listen to what these OTS tuners tell you when it comes to wastegate voltage. 3.9 volts is very high! Go for 3.2-3.6 volts. Also, setting the voltage when the turbo is out of the car does not mean the voltage will be the same when it’s installed. As the last step to the turbo install, double check the wastegate voltage! Always! Thank me later
Yep, I followed a guide mostly done for gti’s. From what I could tell the biggest difference is the solenoids get in the way. Check out Colgate Mk7s install. He just completed his on UA-cam about a week ago.
Nice! Congrats on the new ride. Not to sound like I’m trying to make you watch my videos, but if you follow the cadence of when I released each video, that’s exactly the process I went. Roughly, springs, downpipe, tune, intercooler, intake, turbo and tune again.
Hi @dadwagon, I've got a 2016 GSW and I've recently tried the Unitronic Stage 1 ECU tune. When I do that I notice a vibration at low revs (at idle) so that when I engage the transmission into drive or reverse from a stop (obvs) the car feels like it's 'pulsing' forward. I don't think that the car is actually pulsing forward, it just feels that way becuase of the vibration. Have you ever noticed anything like this or even heard of that? I've applied the tune and backed it off twice due to this issue. Any advice is of use to me.
Richard, i dont' know of that and i don't have any specific advice for you there other than reach out to unitronic - they're very helpful and responsive.
@@DadWagon 94 is hard to find where I live (Central Canada). Shell seems to be the only place that you can find 93/94. I wonder what happens if I would run 91 with an is38.
@@kfrdubberYou're not the only person who doesn't have easy access to 93-94 octane. You have two main options I believe - 1. If you have access to E85 - you can look up how to mix e85 with 91 to increase the octane to 93 - there are apps to help calculate. 2. I believe there are some tuners that make an IS38 tune specific to 91 octane (i may be wrong).

That was a pretty undramatic 4.3x 0-60 run.
4.3 to 60 was what C&D tested a 360 Modena at in 2000. It's a quick number.
Thanks for sharing.

Glad that tip was helpful! And glad your having fun with the new boosty boy
congrats on the baby on the way, this car coming together
Thanks!!
I just did the APR IS20 in my 2015 FWD GSW. definitely notice the difference. Will do intercooler by spring.
I should also note that I have been having misfire issues since doing this upgrade. Have yet to do a launch without epc light misfire error.

Congrats on the baby news! Glad you got the install done under the wire haha. Hope it keeps running smooth for you.
Thanks buddy! And thanks for watching.
Guy, I tried to help you out!
Hahaha I’ll be tackling IS20 install this weekend thanks for the tips.
How did your IS20 go? I just did my 2015 FWD GSW on Monday. Will do intercooler next.

Thanks 🙏 for checking it out and glad to know my experience is similar to yours. I’ll share some logs soon so you can tell me what I’m looking at :)
@@DadWagon looking forward to it and as always hit me.up on FB DM if you ever have any questions. BTW....B8s? AWESOME!
Setting up tangible rewards for your personal goals is the best way to motivate yourself. Especially if you've already put some money down haha
Agreed. Thanks for checking this out!
Great video, man. I appreciate the tips as I'll be hanging an IS20 onto my Alltrack in a few weeks. 👍
Awesome. You got this. It’s a fun and involved install that feels hugely rewarding when complete.

Ahhh crap. Oem dp does have to come out, apparently. Someone please advise me if I'm wrong. Thanks!
Great Vid!

Just went thru this yesterday forgot to adjust it and I got a EPC light gonna adjust it tomorrow after work
its 3.5 to 3.8
Have you noticed any increased turbo lag? I've read in a few places that that's the main con with a bigger turbo on these engines.
Yes, there is more spool time but I kind of assumed that would be the case moving to a larger turbo. Not sure how it compares to other options.
Is it obligated to drain the coolant ?
Hey this might have been mentioned but did you upgrade your spark plugs or have any recommendations?
Hey man I bought the same car 🚘 and go bring that baby tomorrow!!! 😃
Awesome! 🎉 congratulations.
would this be the same method on a gti mk 7.5?
pretty much.

Was it the wastegate connector or DV connector? You kept saying DV but I think it’s the wastegate connector that’s rotated. 😉
🥸 wastegate 🥸
Hey boss what sequence did you modify your car. I just bought an all track and would eventually end up w a build similar to this.

Is it worth it, I drive WV and PA roads tight roads
100% - the car is a blast to drive. Going IS20 is a great option as well.
Did you use adapters for the sparco terras or find 5x112s?
They sell 112s. That’s what I got.

Are you running 94 octane all the time? Is it hard to find in your area? Is it hard to find in your travels?
Running 93 everywhere. Easy to find in Michigan (every gas station sells it). Only been around the Midwest, and is very, very common.
Will also mix 93 with E85 to hit closer to 100 octane

After setting the WG voltage, did you have to do the adaptation? I got OBD11 and it looks like might need vcds.
Yes, I was able to run the adaption with obd11 pro
Nice install, how did you lose weight ?
Just eating better and tracking it more closely. Used NOOM to help.
Near the end i started running a couple miles every other day.
Nice, I'm debating if it's really worth it... I need suspension and wheels, I'm already stage 1+ with intake, muffler delete and inlet.
The fact that you dont know the difference between a dv and a wastegate makes me scared that youre doing this kind of job
There’s a difference? :) thanks for watching
