Thanks Patrick, this video is very informative and helpful. If you have a moment I'd love to get your insight on a very interesting and troubling situation I recently experienced. I really wanted to achieve the benefits of nasal breathing during sleeping so I started taping my mouth closed. One night I awoke from my body desperately trying to get breaths through my mouth even though it was about 80% completely sealed by the tape. I don't recall my nasal passages being blocked at the time so I'm perplexed by this. I hopeful you might have some insight. By the way I was lying on my back when this issue accrued, which is usually the only time I experience snoring that also wakes me up... apparently a very common problem when sleeping on the back.
Hi Richard. Thank you for your question. It can take some time to get used to mouth taping. Usually a few weeks. Also, lying on back won’t be recommended - it’s vital to maintain nasal breathing, slow breathing with correct tongue resting posture. Also, sleeping on the back is not recommended as apneas double in 50% of people with sleep apnea.Patrick
Much appreciated information Patrick! Regarding sleeping on ones back... I've had limited success avoiding this after I fall asleep. Wedging pillows between my front and back sometimes helps. If you have any additional suggestions or a link to a webpage on the subject that would be really great! :))
I have both books oxygen advantage and close your mouth. Morning cp is around 16-19s right now after a month , I started at 7s as a severe asthma case I am starting to do the steps exercise is there a limit on how many sets I can do. I have time, and am motivated to do as much as needed.
Hi Stylez, 6 repetitions of the Steps exercises three times daily would be good, and reduced breathing (breathe right to breathe light) for ten mins every hour. Let us know how this goes for you. glad you are motivated, the more you practice the more your CP will increase and symptoms reduce. Patrick
I am a very light breather at night, I wake up with horrible anxiety. I attribute it to not enough oxygen at night. Deep breathing relieves the anxiety. If I train deeper breathing, and therefore breath deeper while sleeping, I wake up feeling better and little to no anxiety. When I practice Buteyko breathing, it may be a bit relaxing while doing it, but anxiety is heightened immediately afterwards. If I have anxiety before starting Buteyko breathing, anxiety gets worse while practicing. I completely agree with the nose breathing stuff, that certainly helps. But lighter breathing doesn't work for me. Am I just an exception, or?
No you're completely normal for an anxiety sufferer doing breath training @toodeep1913. Going slow and easy is ESSENTIAL when you suffer with anxiety. A panicked or anxious state can make light, low and slow breathing extremely challenging. Make sure you're completely relaxed prior to the exercises. Have a look at this video. I get panic if i get coughing, because exhaust air is blocked within mouth. Therefore..I use tape vertical, not across the lips. IT leaves some space space to disperse the exhaust air in case of cough. Any comments please.
I will start practising, I use the cp machine but dont want to get used to it, I have noticed when I use it for a while and stop, it is horrible to sleep, apnea qets worst. question, the tape goes horizontal or vertical? should I do the slow breathing during the day even if I am working in the office? thanks
Hello, when I breath through my nose, my nostrils close. I noticed that nostrils of other people open when they breath through the nose. That's why I am used to mouth breath day and night. I asked my general doctor : no idea, no solution, "it's not a big deal". I asked A plastic surgeon "it is too touchy, I don't do nose it can be dangerous". Do you have any solution ? I am a 35 male, asthma since my 10y old, not centered nose never surgically touched.
If I learn again how to breathe with nose, can I fix my jaw with thai excercises? I am working on that but when pass a moment my jaw go down. I hope do you understan me.
Andrew i understand you. I just started having apnea... I hadn't had much sleep for 3 nights and until i searched what's wrong with me i was panicking so much that my heart would beat at levels it wouldn't beat if i ran for a bit. Life is worth living. Life is only 1 thing: dealing with problems. This too is a problem and we must learn how to deal with it and what is it that we can do to help ourselves and them share what worked for us with others.

@@ButeykoClinicInternational Thank you so much for the response. I will check those out.
What about central sleep apnea? What causes it and how to fix it? Everybody seems to talk only about the obstructive one.
I’m wondering if people with high loop gain and sleep apnoea are the ones getting long covid ?

Yes you are WORTHY @Andrew Hedlund. You are a fighter and you will overcome. Get the book "Oxygen Advantage" and learn all you can. You CAN do it.
Can you tell me if u suffer from sleep apnea can u still use the paper tape method
Allen Parsens thank you
Yes, it is important with sleep apnea to breathe only through the nose. We have a new tape called Myotape which is very safe and effective. Patrick
