I think the truth of Bethesda is that Skyrim as a revolutionary game was probably more akin to dumb luck than actual competency. All of their games succeeding Skyrim prove this to be true. They happened to have a great idea that revolutionized gaming. No further great ideas or innovation has come from Bethesda.

I think Oblivion and Fallout 3 really gave them a running start into console game spheres, so when they released Skyrim (and sought to simplify the RPG mechanics to allow for more mainstream appeal) it was sorta meant to be!
I’m not entirely sure which aspects of Skyrim people feel so clung to, and why. I may need to watch a video essay regarding the topic, ideally from someone who isn’t monotone and isn’t 9 hours long lol
I just need someone excitable to tell me WHY it’s good lol
Anyway anyway, I certainly do think their luck has elapsed for certain!

@johnnyflannigan136 I wholeheartedly agree. I became disillusioned by Skyrim's lack of design a year and a half after launch day. For all the things I liked, there were 3 I disliked, and it eventually broke me away from Bethesda. Now I only play FO3, NV, and Oblivion and Morrowind. Since I already own them, and they were designed well, I can play them still with copious mods. Skyrim I cannot play even with full overhauls and retrofits. Bethesda backstabbed me. Fuck Bethesda and their incompetence. That would be okay if they were akin to Sega like that. But they're not just stupid, they're also arrogant and prideful. They're so full of themselves, from the executive heads all the way to the QA.

You know, now that I think about it, I've never completed a Bethesda game before or since Fallout 3. It's not that I didn't have fun, I just never find the main story to be compelling enough to get through it.

The messed up thing is that no planet is truly empty because no matter where you land random buildings would be generated near you every time sprinkled with a ship that always happens to land as soon as you exit your ship. So even if there are people that want to experience the loneliness as described in their PR statement they can't, it's not there. Instead there is something much worse: copy pasted buildings that you've already seen a dozen times keep following you wherever you go like a nightmare that you can't escape. Truly one of the games.

I've put a lot of time in Skyrim, Oblivion and Fallout 3 over the years and while I did enjoy them to varying degrees, the issues in Starfield - cut/paste environments, bland plotlines, diluted mechanics - are all over those games as well. And it seems like to me at least, that many people at the time, just gave them a pass.
But now with 76 and Starfield, I'm seeing more people looking back on these games with a fine-tooth comb. And I'm wondering if the bubble will burst.

@@stevenguitink5947 Personal anecdote, but I’d say some of the best times I had with Starfield were centered around the fantasy of what I was doing, and not the experiences I was having.
Open loot systems like Bethesda games of the past, fused with weapon crafting and skill upgrades while being this space captain who lands at locations he needs to be and make deals/trades with people he needs to as passive errands was the most fun I had in Starfield.
But it’s a farce. Between every beat of that experience, I was in and out of menus and waiting at load screens. They were brief (which makes me wonder why they couldn’t have been hidden (part of me wants to make another video about this later talking about my theory that the Series S is at fault for MANY decisions in this game)), but they ultimately served to take away from the fantasy I was living while playing the game. Issue is, after a couple dozen hours, you can’t see passed those issues, and the game will sour the longer you stick by it if your tolerance for BS is low.
Ultimately you’re not missing much. I doubt they’ll let the game stay as it is, and modders will certainly evolve it into something as compelling as it could have been, so waiting for a deep sale might be the best move.
I do stand by getting the branded Xbox controller though. My GOD that thing is beautiful, and might be the most complete thing about Starfield launch lol

Honestly, their design approach hasn't even changed since Morrowind. They just found what was a winning formula at the time, and instead of meaningfully pushing the boundaries of it forward, simply copied and pasted it, while removing and over-simplifying features therewithin. It's a strategy that is effective on new players and people who aren't used to the formula (i.e., who haven't played BGS games before), but once you understand how the formula works, it grows stale/tired very quickly because of how little innovation has occurred.

I've been gaming since the 80's and I'm really falling out with the major game developers over the years, like EA and Rockstar for example. They used to make good games. They respected the players and gave you a finished product and a good value for your money. Somewhere along the way, they've become unscrupulously greedy. They take our money and give us unfinished games infested with bugs and boring writing. They create toxic multiplayer environments to sell shark cards and sue their fanbase for making mods. Now, every time players give negative feedback, developers respond by insulting them. I don't need to be a chef to know this dish is undercooked Bethesda.

That was basically right around the time they realized pre-orders can secure sales, even if the back lash afterward is significant. The Kickstarter and Indie boom only took off the way it did, because people could see the writing on the wall. Whats sad is that we thought 2013 was the worst the AAA industry had ever been...... the bottom is still too far down to see.

Bethesda: When the astronauts landed on the moon, they weren't bored.
That is because it was one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind. The astronauts landed on the first celestial body that humanity has looked up at wonder for centuries and they were glad that they were the first (and hopefully not the last) and didn't care if it was barren since it gave humanity hope that there is so much out there, also it took place in the year 1969. Starfield takes place in the year 2330, and despite all the spaceships Bethesda didn't bother to add vehicles or make the settlement and cultures more diverse. I'm surprised the English language is still around and hasn't changed into something different (don't get me started on the fashion). The future just looks bland and generic.

Such awesome points though! We’ve seen sci-fi cover linguistic changes in the English language by having new slang, accents, colloquialisms and what not. The fact we don’t get to see much in the way of culture beyond logs is super disappointing. What is there, feels decidedly gray. No real pulse behind the world, just a bunch of words that definitely do mean things, and invoke interesting conversations…but nothing REALLY there.
Also yeah, I don’t know how they could compare landing on the moon IRL and for the first time as a human race, to a blank 500km instance in a video game. Classic Bethesda PR lmao

It would have been ahead of its time in terms of graphical fidelity, but almost everything else is downgrade compared to Fallout 4, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Oblivion, and even Morrowind. It still has a boring and uninspired world, lore, characters and terrible exploration. Its not that they are staying the same and the game design is outdated thats the real problem. The real problem is that they are going so far backwards that it just turns bad regardless of the year it came out because the choices they have made wouldn't be acceptable even in 2002. A big problem is really it's writing and quest design. It's done by only a few people to cover "1000" planets in the game and most of the quests bogs down to is fetch quests which made me feel like an errand boy. For an RPG there are no real choices or impactful consequences that really affect the world itself. This has been a thing since Fallout 3 and started being clear in Fallout 4. Since Starfield removed any enjoyment of space exploration it's left many people feeling the game has nothing to do but run in a direction for 5-10 minutes, shoot something and take an item.

That's what blows me away too! They made a game with a degree of content comparable to their older games, and just LITERALLY MUSHED it across a big galaxy map, and called that good enough.

I'm a PS player so i'm getting this out of the way already.
It saddens me what Bethesda has become.
Skyrim was a beautiful game, brilliant atmosphere, good story, soulfull music, it deserved to be remembered as one of the best games in history.
I as a ps player had to wait a year before i could play it but that was fine for me.
    (xbox timed exclusivity)
The game was (mostly) patched, all the dlc was included, i had a brilliant time with it.
So much so i bought a lot of merch for it (shirts, map, beer mugs with the logos of the taverns on it, etc, etc)
Then came fallout 4, gave it a shot, wasn't the best story wise (to this day i haven't completed it), but the season pass was ridiculously cheap (20 or 30 bucks for everything) and i had fun with the settlement system (yes other people hated it, but by glitching it (increase the settlement build limit, recource duplication) you could have some fun with it.
Then came fallout 76............... and i was so dissapointed with it.
All we wanted was a full fallout experience that we could share with a friend or two, what was dificult about that?
the story was bland, it had no npc's, apalacha wasn't boston , the capital wasteland or new vegas in quality, had tons of glitches and they actively tried to rip us of with the special editions and fallout first.
When bethesda was bought out by xbox i was heartbroken, sure fallout 76 was a massive dissapointment but the fact that i never could play an elder scrolls game or a new full fallout game again was devistating, and honestly i felt a bit betrayed.
All my years as a fan seem to be thrown back into my face by bethesda as it was unwanted trash.
    I mean what's a fan's devotion to a couple of billion dollars?
    Aparentely nothing.
But still, while i knew that Starfield was out of my reach i kinda hoped it was at least good.
Oh boy have i been proven wrong.
What i hear from people and you it was an utter dissapointment and proof that bethesda was stuck in a rut.
A rut it was in since Oblivion it seems.
I now realised and understand why it was so easy for xbox to buy them out, the bethesda board knew they needed cash because of the massive fallout 76 failure, and i honestly think they knew that starfield wasn't going to be all it was cracked to be.
I fear for elder scrolls 6.
The microsoft curse has struck again.

Hey there, thanks for the comment! I really did want to adore Starfield the way people loved Skyrim, because I genuinely believed that by all regards, it had the potential to be all the best parts of Bethesda's style rolled into a game with more modding capabilities than one could articulate.
It just didn't get the chance to be that game, and as much as I hope we get a Hello Games/CDPR show of good faith, I'm...not sure we'll see meaningful change, since some of the issues are deeper than just fixes. At the foundation, some serious considerations need to be made.

The negative reviews of Starfield do have lagitamite gripes. My first characters save data is corrupted. I lost her. 80 hours in. I started a new character. I'm 16 in real life days in. 384 hours. So I like the game. I do. It's got fun moments. I've NG+ once, and am on my way to 2. That being said, the game does get tedious at times. Akilia City has bugs, there are times my in game sound disappears, my ships paint job has glitched.
When I started this character, and tried to do quests in Akilia, I thought I was going to be stuck there forever. My character would go to my ship, but CTD when I tried to take off. I had to search for an hour to figure out to go away from the city, about 700M, and fast travel to my ship. It then allowed me to leave. I have a rock that follows my ship. Parts of New Atlantis have disappeared. A lot of the planets are bare, and supposed to be used for outposts.
I think Bethesda thought a bunch of DLCs, and some mods would flush out the universe. I don't think it's fair to expect the modding community to fix, or flush out their game. They need to seriously fix the game breaking bugs, make sure no matter what you play on, all quests work, and the game is playable.
If the first DLC is held to the end of 2024, so fixes can be made, patches can add more precedural content so that we're not going through the same dungon areas on planets. Ship building is more flushed out. I want to be able to modify the interior, and place doors and ladders where I want them. If they fix most of this, and release the first DLc at the end of the year for free, that would help to heal badness gamers feel about this game, and give hope that ES6 may not end up a dumpster fire.

    • @arkyUS_YT

      This exactly! 👆
The game is in rough shape, and could use the usual Bethesda TLC they tend to give their games post launch, but we definitely need more than that as well! Pushing the DLC till AFTER fixes, I feel would be a show of good faith that things aren’t working, and they wouldn’t dare ask for more money knowing damn well the game is a husk of potential, free labor was meant to fill in.
So many quality of life changes could be made to streamline things, and if they removed strange arbitrary decisions like loading screens when a cutscene could cover them up, or removing boundary’s to planetary exploration…or like you said, enhancing the randomization of the procedural generation so it’s able to more effectively create next dungeons and experiences, based on templates that Bethesda makes and expounds off of.
I want this game to rule, so much of it does right now, but this could have been GOTY slam dunk tier hands down! Instead, they released the bare minimum to get it out the door, and trusted modders would fill in the planets.
      Actually so depressing :/

The launch of Starfield is so similar to the launch of NoMan's Sky that it's uncanny.
No Man's Sky at launch was also said to have all the depth of a puddle. While I enjoyed the game even then, it didn't make that statement wrong. The game simply didn't have much to do.
But that "shallow state at launch" seems to be where that similarity ends.
Where Bethesda keeps trying to do damage control even as they make things worse, Hello Games only said "We will fix things" and got back to work.
After 3 months, Bethesda has only added support features that players had modded in within days, but in the same time Hello Games had pushed out an update that was already adding new major game play features.
Bethesda is locking new content behind payed DLC, while all of Hello Games updates to NMS are free.
All this was done by a team less than 1% the size of the one that worked on Starfield.
All Bethesda had to do was follow in Hello Games footsteps to fix things. They only had to say "Sorry for disappointing you all, we'll work to make things right", shut up and get back to work, then give a few free content updates at a steady pace over the next year to make the game interesting.

Starfield needs the NMS treatment I think. I simply don't know if present day Bethesda is either willing or able to actually do the things which MUST be done. The "get out of jail free" cards that Bethesda has relied on in the past, AKA the modders, have seemingly woken up & AREN'T fixing Bethedas mess this time around.
Keep in mind, that even if the powers that be at either Bethesda or MS improve Starfield, it won't be a 10 out of 10. At best, I think it'll go up to an 8 out of 10.

They really do need to NMS this game, the way Cyberpunk did before it. If they are willing to dig in, and really speak candidly and openly about how the game doesn't reflect their best efforts. Even if it WAS their absolute best effort, it doesn't change that they have mountains of playtesting and beta test material.
I hope they can right the ship, and fill in the design blanks, because the Starfield in my head...the one in everyones head prior to release, could have been bang on the best Bethesda game of all time.

The "empty planets" we got is just wastelands full of copy/pasted procedural gen outposts every 700 meters or so. This is why they all feel the same, because they basically are, just with a palette swap for whatever world you're on, to the point where it makes NO sense that planets the furthest away from civilization are literally littered with outposts and settlements.
I would have actually liked for Bethesda to lean MORE into the "empty planets" thing, and give us ACTUALLY uninhabited planets, maybe with interesting geological / biological features to explore and exploit with a better outpost building system, while also giving modders more empty space to play with once the modding tools come out. The whole exploration aspect of the game is just.. mis-designed as it is right now.

I guess that’s just it, yeah? Like not death of the company, but death of the reputation? Death of what they once stood for to the lions share of gaming fans? Death of the Bethesda spirit?
I know not everyone loved them, and I certainly didn’t like ALL their games, but very few companies consistently had me as engaged and locked into their titles as them.
So I’d say I agree, I don’t know if they’ll be critical darlings anymore, and if ES fails or stands as a large game, that gets little general traction…
What stops Microsoft from handing them a property, asking them to “Bethesda-fy” it, and being trusted less and less with producing their own original IPs out of fear of more failures.
I think that would be the death of Bethesda spiritually, and I truly believe Starfield might be the first explosion leading to that, especially now that Microsoft owns them.

They've always been about giving players freedom and agency in a large open world, even going back to the Daggerfall/Arena days, but since Morrowind the lack of innovation has meant the rest of the industry has blown past them. Correct! Starfields success or failure really only matters to die hard fans of the Xbox brand, and Bethesda fans.
If UA-camrs/Game Fans/Etc are all preemptively casting a cloud of doom and gloom prior to the games launch, that in conjunction with the game potentially not being able to live up to its expectations, could really be a perfect combo of mess to ruin their standings.
I don’t think Bethesda can “die” necessarily, but I do think they can become a B team Microsoft throws properties at to “Bethesda-ify” using their engine and game formulas.

The stripping of mechanics is what really bothers me. It’s been clear they want to appeal to the mainstream so bad, that they’ll intentionally remove depth, to basically make their games looter shooters before RPGs.
Granted, Starfield tried walking back into RPG-hood, but…in execution, it isn’t the sort of depth I think we’d all hoped for.

What they didn't take into consideration with the whole moon landing comment is that the public interest (your average person with little interest in exploration) was fueled by the space race. Being the first to the moon is what drove that interest. After the U.S. beat the Soviets to the moon, that interest fell quickly. Fast enough in fact that NASA wasn't sure if they would have funding for the fourth landing at the time as the public quickly lost interest. They were lucky to get six landings before the Apollo program ended.
Beyond that, for those of us who do find the exploration of space interesting, there is a big difference between exploring planets in real life where we know so little about the universe vs exploring planets that are procedurally generated based only off of what we do know of the universe.
In the real universe, there could be elements and phenomena we can't even comprehend yet. In the game? Just the same stuff over and over again and because it is procedurally generated off all of the same database of assets, you know there won't be any true surprises or amazing discoveries even if you visit all the planets in the game. The pattern of the assets will start to become familiar after visiting a handful of them.

Modders can fix the uninteresting concept, the bad dialogue, and the bland NPCs. They can ... but why? The level of effort would be over the top. Cyberpunk was bad because it was buggy as hell. That was difficult enough, but they were still fixing a game with a good story and good dialogue and a good concept. At its core, Cyberpunk was good. At its core, Starfield is not.

The foundational rot is ENTIRELY a good argument to make. You can't fix the dialog and characters, and narrative beats without...butchering the whole thing and starting over. I wonder how much this game will be rife with mods that just total convert stuff, and get you as far from primary narrative beats as possible. I liked SOME of what the story had to say, especially the NG+ loops, but...damn, it's not gonna be easy to fix this aside from a major overhaul.

When a dude comes out with a driver for $15, almost immediately - and everyones in an identical loop playing a game, which at first glace, should by rights, have multiple different loops to offer. - I know its not the game; and probably not the software either. At least not anything Bugthesda had any direct control over.
I play Starfield on Series X and while its got its problems, theres nothing prompting me to rush to social media to join the mass cope for answers. - However, I've been making and playing gamesoft for decades; from a hobby to cash collaborations, to having long since moved on to other things.
Obviously the devs chose to focus on a particular arc (thats normal for any gamesoft), and obviously playing it within a shell like 'Gamepass' is going to result in having all MS redundancy measures fed into it, like XBOX & DX tech they've been working on since '94. - That still doesn't explain why theres a big performance disparity between Steam PC & XBOX. Until you zoom out and see the whole picture..
Theres no reason why chip manufacturers didn't have drivers ready for a game that came, pre-packed with this much hype. - Usually they would right? They'd be using the game to showoff who's got the best tech. - Except when you take into account that they've long since hit the tech ceiling, and theres almost no difference between them; apart from how each process functions. So they've resorted to disruptive product releases, and driver delays. - and very few picked up on it, d'ya know why?
Because you think devs can do everything at once. You don't look at this "games industry" as what it is; a collaborative exercise of licenses, and permissions, among competing tech firms, and end product services.

great video man. I spent 423 hours in the game without cheating or using console command. In fact, the game needs a lot. The main cities are just villages. The design of the cities makes you not see them completely as the city of New Atlantis. I got very lost in a city and did not know where to go to buy weapons or armor and so on. NBC is just bullshit, there is no artificial intelligence, and their design is disgusting. Faces are repeated everywhere, and it is clear. In short, the design of NBC takes us back twenty years. The maps are unbearable. Made maps and made areas give you a feeling of unreality. This is very bad. My visits to planets are often useless. In fact, they are dead planets with no life in them, and that is fine, but where are the humans? Just four to five cities, and as I mentioned, they are just villages, not cities. I see from my experience in the game whose story I loved so much that it is 50% incomplete. Even when I fight characters, the power indicator on them in some dark places obscures them from view. The sense of competition is slightly weakened by the exposure of their energy indicators. Or as we can express it as an indicator of life for the characters. I do not like to talk about how wonderful the physical factors are like others who did and neglect that ballistic weapons do nothing to you in terms of recoil. The recoil force of ballistic weapons is very strong in space, and this is what makes the reality of the physical element in the game very bad, and this is the bitter truth. An example of the bad quality is that if an animal attacks you and let's say behind body of another dead animal, he will not to run over that dead body but will pass through it, and when you shoot the animal that is attacking you, your bullets collide with the body of the dead animal which means it will be canceled and do not reach its goal which is the attacking animal behind it while the attacking animal is emerges through the dead body while he's charging at you. and sometimes Your shot won't pass over a leaf! There are a lot of things that make the game actually very limited, and this is a very scary thing. There are no beautiful melodies like Skyrim, for example. Skyrim was and still is amazing and beyond description. finally, I'm sorry for my bad English I use translator anyways. so, you can blame google translator lol.

Once I accepted that what makes a Bethesda game good is the modding community behind it, I realized just how awful Bethesda games are. I almost like give a pass to aspects of Starfield’s poor design because I’m like “Oh, that’s fine I’ll just get a mod when the toolkit comes out to make X better.” This is the same company that people were praising for Skyrim’s innovative design. now making concessions for faults in Starfield by alluding to the massive modding community that they quite literally expected to fix their game.
This isn’t Starfield’s fault. This is Bethesda’s responsibility. The truth is that they were once beloved parents of Elder Scrolls and Fallout and wanted to have another baby they could coddle since the former two were becoming old and teenagers, and in Morrowind’s case, a grown ass adult. Bethesda became a shitty parent that has relied on its village to raise its child, and now the village has seen through Bethesda shenanigans and wants no part of it.
Again, it’s not Starfield’s fault. Love the game for the things it does well and hold Bethesda accountable for so very shittily expecting the modding community to do the rest. Shame on you Bethesda.

I don't think this game will kill them off but if they don't get Elder Scrolls 6 perfect.
That game will kill the company off.
Hopefully having a game map that is in just one tiny part of the world means that they can flesh it out with content to bypass all the issues that Starfield has right now. And in a way, think Starfield is facing the same issues that No Man Sky faced, so they're going to have to have a dedicated team on this game for a long time with constant new content patches, bug fixes. That's the sort of title they decided to bring out and it will cost them now a lot more than they make on the game.
So Elderscrolls 6 has to be successful, there's no way around it now, no room for error, etc.
And by successful, enough so that it can fund the game after it but also to fund this game alongside itself with it's DLC and all.
The only ones at fault for this added stress and workload is well, Beshesda. In fact, maybe Microsoft will have to get more involved and do some upper management reshuffling.

    • @arkyUS_YT
      @arkyUS_YT  6 місяців тому

Mind you, I think even if ES6 fails, they will still be a company that exists ultimately, so that's not what I mean when I say "Kill", yeah?
Not that you're saying that, but it's a sentiment I've seen shared about the video. But, will Microsoft have them keep siphoning budgets like this if ES6 comes out and reviews poorly and is widely agreed to be a major flop? Will they be able to lean on their pedigree for forever, when the next generation of game fans has only seen them at their worst?
SEGA failed, and they made CONSOLES.

Here's the thing. Dev's are usually very excited when they have new and modern game engines and tech to work with. It inspires them to try out new ideas that weren't previously possible and it usually drives a development team to come up with a really great concept for a game. When you have a game engine that is over 3 generations old, and you're forcing your dev team to use old concepts to create new ideas, that is eventually going to fizzle out. They desperately need a brand new game engine from scratch that is up to modern gaming standards, and I know they've been working on it. But come on now. If they decide re-brand the Creation Engine as being "new" one more time, that will be the end of them. If Elder Scrolls 6 isn't on a brand new engine and up to modern game standards, I'm not wasting another dollar into this company until they show me something different. I knew FO 76 was going to suck, so I didn't buy it. I knew Starfield was going to suck, so I didn't buy it. We will see when more info starts coming out on Elder Scrolls 6, if I fell like they've learned their lesson. I'm not holding my breath.

I think Skyrim was the Bethesda game I started with, I put over 3k hours into it, I played fallout NV and 4 and had a good time, those games even if they wouldn't have lasted as long as they did would still have been quite fun without mods. Starfield on the other hand feels like a lifeless husk,. Sure it was less buggy than other Bethesda games, but the bugs it had were gamebreaking for me making me lose like 50 hours of progress. Now I might not even care that much, I stared a new character, but the game is almost too boring to replay anything. I won't mention the planets much, but for example the ship progression is almost useless, and you can go through the whole game with an upgraded A class a ship. Also many features are removed, did you find a gun with a cool attachment you can't craft? Well gone are the days of fallout 4, now removed weapon attachments disappear. And all the challenges to upgrade your perks are a massive grind, like the ship ones just make you place a bunch of ship pieces even if they're completely unnecessary for you.

I gotten flac for my negative review when everyone was in their "honeymoon" stage (I gave it a thumbs down in late September). I did not pay the deluxe package in fact I did not pay the full retail price, but I still paid for it. My short review of it was it was the bits of every Bethesda game minus the good parts.
They damaged their brand with Fallout 76 very badly, and this was the their last chance with me. They failed in story, character design, charm, and overall world building. With Fallout 4 while I did not like that you have to be in a faction of sorts to complete the game it still let me be a lone wanderer for the majority of the time (this includes the DLC). The game & world of Fallout 4 for the most part felt complete. Starfield has you ball & chained from the get go, and likes to punish you for not following the path they want you to go with characters that just either babble non stop, or nag at you like a controlling spouse/Karen (especially Sarah).
I gave them a fair shake, but after investing $50 of hard earned money as well as wasting 93 hours of my life I felt burned in the end. Bethesda blew it, and they will have to earn my trust before I will buy any new game from them ever again.

Modders can't fix that the narrative of the game does not support the gameplay. And this is the first time I needed to make this argument with a game, ever. You constantly read and hear things within the game, that look good on paper and sound awesome, but you never encounter them as gameplay elements. The game itself lies to you what it would (want to) be like, but then you play the game, and it's not like that at all.
"I'm mad at you, so next time we're at a port, I'm leaving, and you should think about what you have done. (companion voiceover)" -> Follower stays with you.
"Oh no, now that this CEO is dead, the company is ruined, this will send ripples throughout the galaxy. (NPC dialogue)" -> Company products continue to be featured in the game world the same as before, prices do not change, employee NPCs retain their schedule, etc.
"Terrormorphs are the most dangerous creatures out there, they could literally extinct the human species given the chance. (NPC dialogue)" -> Dumb bullet sponges that make for easier combat than a single elite carrying a Magstorm.
"My absolute favorite moments in space are when I stop in deep space, kick back and look out the window, with nothing in sight, no planets, no ships. (companion voiceover)" -> No deep space in Starfield.
"The feeling of stepping on a planet as the first human ever, there is nothing like it. (companion voiceover)" -> Human structures (POI) randomly generated on every planet you land on.
pick SAME religion as a companion during character creation -> no changes in romance dialogue, I'm still the same heathen given the same dialogue as without that character trait (How would you propose fixing this with mods? Hire the voice actress for new lines of dialogue?)
    [...]
You start playing the game, it makes all these promises to you... then you just continue playing and after there is no more content left for the game to own up to its promises, you are being made aware that these were all lies (most of which are abandoned gameplay features they lazily left traces of inside the game).
No amount of modding can fix the dozens upon dozens of examples of ludonarrative dissonance.

The community's condition is also partly Bethesda's doing. Not entirely, haters will hate, but they've done things over the course of awhile that turned a great number of people off from their games and brand (some of them became content creators, imagine that info spread haha)

Starfield feels like the scaffolding of a good game with no actual game in it - all the cool moments Im supposed to feel that Todd bragged about fall flat because I know that no matter what happens in the story, Im still stuck in a gameworld where you copy pasta every location type and dont even bother to change enemy positions or treasure locations....it legit kills any potential fun I could have and dissuades me from exploring...why would I bother when they didnt put any effort into differentiating locations

I feel like this EXACT thing is what Starfield fails at the most. Between quests, and self directed missions, I LOVE walking in a random direction and do my best E3 cinematic demo camera as I take in the world and run into weird buildings/sites/adventures etc.
You seriously can’t do this beyond the pre-established “Bethesda approved” locations satisfyingly. They boxed that part of the experience in AND they procedural generated absolutely every part of it.

For me, what WILL ruin Bethesda is a bit layered. I'll elaborate.
First, I'll disagree with Lilymnavona = Skyrim was NEVER revolutionary in gaming. It was spectacle. It was hype. It released bascially broken but people did enjoy it. I personally hated that they stripped every single USEFUL RPG mechanic out of it. (One freaking skill point in a different tree for UNARMED) 10 freaking HP per level, but that giant gets to brain you if you go over 10, because fuck Constitution; or proper damage resistence. Or Strength. I could go on.
Morrowind was the one that was revolutionary to me - and the reason for that was they canonically had a reason that the MC was OVERPOWERED in stats. They baked it into the main quest of the game, and if you were patient you could literally beat down Vivec without any problem. Yes, it borked your save - but you can do it. No cheating. No exploits. No bullshit you have to do it this way, and NOT fuck it up Resto loop to make it based off "Enchantment" (It's not Enchantment if you get the majority of the effect from a freaking POTION Todd!!!)
What will actually ruin them is:
    - The fact they do rely heavily on Hype.
    - They do over rely on Modders to fix what they can't be bothered to actually code. Or polish.
    - They WILL NOT be changing their Methuselah aged game engine... (which leads to all the damned bugs)
Renaming it a hundred times, and using bubble gum and duct tape to "upgrade it" isn't the same thing.
    - They tried to Monetize content that is the MODDERS' work. (It's their assets, but by allowing the modders to mod, they're effectively allowing the modders to make money as they can on their own unique works within that frame - and it was always bullshit to try to take a cut of that)
    * They've torched the better part of the modding community and are left with the FNG's trying to learn.
Or those they've "poached" who used to shill for them. So they're devs now, and god knows what amount of work they'll do. Or won't. Since you can mod on your own time and by your own rules, but as a company underling you're kind of screwed.
    - They keep producing half-baked games, coasting on the idea that everyone LOVES them. Without seeming to realize WHY why do. [The. MODS] * The ONLY reason their games are as playable today as they were a decade ago (and I dare you to go try base Daggerfall or Arena again and then tell me the fucking things are "playable") is Modders. Whom again, they've effectively burned bridges with.
    - The more they produce games like Fallout 4/76, Starfield and probably now the ES6, the more customers are going to start voting with their wallets in the long run. It will be a slow bleed out, but it will happen. Microsoft can't save them, because I highly doubt they'll dump very much in funding to keeping Beth around, if they don't prove profittable. The thing about the microsoft deal was always, they DON'T need the games industry to make their money. It's why Sony is a little bit screwed on that point. So overall, the side gig thing will hurt Bethesda, because for them it's NOT a side gig. It is, for Microsoft.
I'd like ES6 to be very few things; but I doubt very highly anything I want from it will be in the game. I would like to see Bethesda go back to actually making compelling RPG's. Just RPG's. Scale down a bit, and work on learning to POLISH their worlds for themselves, rather than trying to make it bigger than all nine levels of Hell. I'd like to say I'm going to love trying new builds in the next Bethesda game, or seeing where the story actually goes. But given the proclivity to strip away mechanics in each new offering and the writing in the last few... my answer is sadly probably a no.
** According to what I've heard, Modders have said they LITERALLY CANNOT fix the game. Because of the way the framework was done. There's too much that would need to be completely overhauled I'd wager, and frankly even if you could it would be an entirely new game. I doubt the modding tools Beth will let them use (because they've also said you can't use 3rd party tools now) are designed to let the modders "fix" the game. They'll probably be able to add a very few tweaks, but I doubt it'll get as crazy as Skyrim or Fallout 4 could do.

Dude sick write up though! I agree it's a nuanced conversation, and has many facets, and I'd have loved to go into all that in this video, but then I'd have wanted to do a "post mortem" of sorts, since we don't know what comes next for this game, yeah? But I agree pretty across the board I'd say! Maybe I can kick around the idea down the line, but I'd say this is a solid understanding!

It doesnt suprise me starfield fell flat, skyrim and fallout 4 worked off a pre existing lore, a worldspace we know.. i do think es6 shouldve been worked on before this, 76 damaged them and starfield is flopping

God I loved Oblivion and Fallout 3 haha
I agree with your roadmap of experiences through and through, and find your concern towards ES6 to be well founded.
I got tons of comments informing me that this game sold millions of copies, and made billions of dollars, and that I’m a sensationalist, but anyone who’s loved, played, and experienced these games to a degree where they can express how they feel about it USING WORDS, all have the same concern I do.
They’ve been going downhill, and FO76 was the first audible loud explosion. We hoped Starfield would be the return to good graces we’d hoped for, since you’d think a company as “community minded” as Bethesda couldn’t overtly show that they don’t care about their communities, surely.
And yet they dropped the ball again in many key aspects, leaving many diehards to wonder:
Can Bethesda today make a good Elder Scrolls game?
We had plausible deniability before, and we simply don’t have it now :/

This is my 1st Bethesda game, and my last. First, I will say that to expect every planet to be unique (how many are there?) isn't realistic. I'm OK with the copy paste worlds in large part. It gets redundant at times, sure, and when I get bored with that redundancy, I just start killing things. I like the ship building aspect, the outpost building, searching for that one resource that will make you money. The weapons are a bit rough and clunky for something that is supposed to elicit that futuristic feel. I guess that's what you get when kids who have probably never held a gun start designing them. Mildly disappointed there.
Here's what I HATE about the game. I just hit level 138 on my 2nd play through (so I've got some time invested here) and I have yet to make it through a single session with less than 5 crashes, or freezes. IT DOESN'T FRIGGIN WORK! The whole thing is a complete train wreck of an abysmally frustrating experience. I mean, when opening the hand scanner to enter build mode at an outpost crashes the game 10 out of 10 times, there might be some fundamental issues happening here. I left a review in the Xbox store saying as much, and Bethesda responded with "...make sure you have the latest update..." It doesn't matter, Bethesda! Every update that comes along just compounds the problem and shows everyone who who paid for this pig that you don't have a clue as to how to fix it. DLC? Let me know how THAT works for you. I've wasted enough money on this development company. On to something else.....

I've seen bad and good instances of this protesting, and ultimately make my decision if it matters to me just by reading a few of the sentiments.
It's a win win win for the consumer.

starfield feels like they took all the worst parts of skyrim and fallout 4, but none of what made them good and why we put up with the games issues heeh.
what I think is causing all of the negative recent reviews is, 30 days before it started was around black friday when sales started, so wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people bought the game on sale then that wouldn't have bought the game day one, or least with mixed reviews, and they are less likely to be fanboys and such that don't have a vested interest in loving the game and more ikely to go bleah.
