- Hey Guys!
Since alot of you guys have been asking what size of a tank would be good for a group of triops!
Remember: 1L-4L / 1/4th Gal - 1Gal per adult Triops
Dont house them in a Gardenshed People, Just dont!!! - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
Im am scared to keep them
I would cry when they die
Such short lives bless thems
Isn't that part of the beauty of them though? You get to see these tiny, adorable life forms from hatchlings to their natural end. All living things die but it's such a gift to be able to see any creatures life from sun up to sundown. To take care of and watch over them. It will always be a bit sad to see a colony pass but if you can get them to breed you get to see generations of them grow and restart that incredible cycle all over again. It's like having a tiny world you can fit in a desk.
I get it though. They only live for around three months and if you tend to get really attached it would be kind of brutal because sometimes they just die and you don't really know why. They're lovely, simple creatures and I kind of hope you give raising them a try one day. Hopefully by then I will also have joined the ranks of the Triop Army. ☺️
When I was a kid I got a kit too, we put them in a big fishbowl. It has never occurred to me that giving them a large and heated/aerated home would be way better for them in every way... it seems so obvious now after seeing your videos. I'm very tempted to try again, but doing it right this time. Keeping triops is such a cool hobby, thank you for sharing your beautiful tanks!
One thing to note: if you're hatching pure triops eggs, you need to make sure there's some organic material mixed in for the hatchlings. Kits usually include a bit of pond dirt in with the eggs, and the hatchlings can eat that.
Thats True, we always add Detritus that basically has the same properties as the pond dirt. Its there to establish the biological balance and to add infusoria
Funny I was just about to message you about this! I always thought that you should have at least 5gal or larger.
That's a "guideline" indeed, but i can recommend a minimum of 10 Gal ( +/- 40L )
I just got this kit at work today, thanks for letting me knpw its not a proper container, guess im whiping out my 2 gallon again!
Please do a video on how to breed and keep a colony going.
bought triops about 2 weeks ago, have two pregnant females ready to start laying. They move into their new 5 gallon tank along with the 2 males they mated with hopefully tonight!!!!!
Do you have a video on triops behavior and the type of tank mates you can put with them? I used to have some I hatched from a kit when I was a kid. You've opened my eyes to them again. They will be a whole new experience now as an adult.
Behaviour: Yes some video's!
Tank size: Just uploaded a video about properly Housing your Triops 🙏 If you're looking for high quality eggs, feel free to send in an order request at triassicparktriops@gmail.com 🙏
thanks for the video! I just bought a triassic triops kit out of curiosity & was wondering if the small plastic tub was suitable for a whole triops. Seems cruel to keep them in such a small, contained environment.
Consider a larger tank instead if it's possible for you. It truly is worth it to see full size Triops grown in a larger type aquarium instead of a small plastic tub that can't be filtered nor maintained on the long run. ( It's possible but such a stressfull and worthless method to actually practice. There are some "deluxe kits with larger containers but tbh.... An aquarium does the thing way better 🙏
Very nice explanation. Great video...keep rockin
Will do! We'll be back soon again with Triops content!
Thx for the help
Tysm! I got a kit and looking at the instructions and what came in it.. yeah I didn't trust any of it and decided to do my own research.. thankful I did!
Hope you found it helpful 🙏
Those tiny containers really arent suited and we try to spread some awareness on the use of these.
How do you handle the eggs in a planted tank? Do you just scoop out the substrate that's not planted up, or do you take everything out and re-plant your plants after? I have eggs in sand from my last triops that I regretted hatching in a 30 by 40 cm plastic tub pretty much immediately xD It was too small. Seeing yours in a planted tank has really inspired me!
Im getting everything tomorrow to truly set up my triop tank but i am using the container as more of a hatching tank for now i will transfer as shortly as possible
Thats awesome to hear, thank you for considering to upgrade to a bigger tank 🙏
Thank you for your knowledge, i will raise my triops in 10 gallons.
Thats a great pick, thank you for considering a larger type of tank instead of commercial plastic containers 🙏
i use a one gallon tank, with a heat pad on the back that keeps the temperature almost perfect! but yeah i agree those are terrible little containers.
i bought one of these kits a long time ago and decided this morning to give it a shot. if they hatch and survive they will be going into my 5 gallon planted aquarium. theres no way the little dish is big enough for even 1.
Im so glad you're agreeing that these tubs arent okay for Triops at all 🙏
An aquarium definitely helps with a longer lifespan but also provides much more view to eventually enjoy your Triops 🙏
@@TriassicParkTriops something has hatched. they are so small it is really hard to say what they are right now. you can barley see them with your naked eye.
@@rm25088 Are they bouncing little Orange dots ? They kinda bounce around and now and then sink to the Bottom ?
@@TriassicParkTriops yes that is exactly what they are. there are a bunch of them.
@@rm25088 how are they doing now ?
So. I got a 5 gallon aquarium I intended for triops... sounds like I have half the bare minimum I should. Guess it’s a good thing I decided to start with Ghost Shrimp to train my aquarium keeping skills with. I’ll plan on getting a 10 gallon before I move to hatching my Triops.
Awesome decision! You can definitely use the 5 Gal = +/- 20L but i would never have more than 10-15 triops in there!
An adult Triops would like: 1/4th - 1Gal ;)
Hey bro love the channel so glad I found these awesome mutant prehistoric alien creatures actually exists and I can house and breed them. My main question is when moving to a larger container do I need an air pump and filtration? And do you just use a planted tank ecosystem that kinda filters itself? what all is necessary?
Basically nothing is necessary, as long as you would take over all the work of these electrical elements.
I personally would suggest the following hardware for some easier/chill Triops keeping:
-Filter: Spongefilters, intank filters, canister filter on larger tanks for example.
-A heater if you cant guarantee stable temperatures in your home
-A cooling system if you live in a tropical climate that reaches above 27°C daily.
-A proper light : Can be any kind of LED type light as long as its powerfull enough to Hatch the eggs. I never measures for required Lumens however.
For natural objects i would suggest:
-Some plants you'd like.
I personally didn't take much plants that are rootbound in the substrate, due to the Triops digging in it. So i went for epiphyte plants that grow on rocks and wood instead like Javafern, Anubias, Mosses, Mossballs, Elodea Oxygenplants and Bucephalandra for example.
-Substrate
Some rocks or wood if you prefer.

Hoe haal je de eieren uit het aquarium?
A 50 liter tank would be enough?
Another doubt I have if i can keep then with neritine snails
Sometimes you only get Fairy-shrimp, Daphnia and Clam-shrimp? I have the reverse problem rn.
A Triops came with my Daphnia culture and now i have a Triops and no clue on how to take care of the poor critter. I am researching and stumbled upon the wealth of knowledge that is this channel!
I named the Triops, Scuttles for vaguely resembling the scuttle-crab from LoL/a Videogame. It's not Scuttles fault for accidentally hatching in my Daphnia culture and having a birthday feast ready.
I plan on putting it in my spare 20L aquarium (read 25 but with enough soil/hard-scape to make the extra 5 obsolete). Had other plans for that, but what plan survives the contact with the enemy, am i right?
So i'm now trying my best to learn how give it as good a life as i can and need help doing so, this channel is great for finding such knowledge.
Thank you for these awesome videos!
I also would be grateful for any advice and experiences/errors to avoid!
I really appreciate your message and am glad the Triops was actually accidentally introduced to you.
While you're at it, dont forget to enjoy the whole experience. You're currently keeping one of the oldest animal species on earth!
If you need help, feel free to contact me over Facebook or Instagram, I have a bit more time now to personally engage with the other hobbyists!
With a big setup like that, how do you manage all the plants and fish when you're drying out the substrate for the egg cycle?
I usually put the plants in a bucket during waiting-time. I dont keep Triops with fish anymore however so I dont have to disturb my fishies and shrimps anymore ;)
What fish are safe to house with Triops? I don’t want to stress either one or have them eat each other /.\
how do you get the eggs from your aquarium if they are still in it
They must always remain at least two weeks in the aquarium to " fully develop".
After that, its sometimes possible to suck some of them up, or scoop out part of the substrate to partially dry a pre-harvest batch. 🙏 On the channel there is a video about egg extraction posted, it features the vacuuuming method.
What exactly do you use for the hatching containers? I have a bunch of ZipLoc containers that are reusable, but they initially came with deli meat, so not sure if they are forever tainted.
Hmm, at least dont wash it with soaps!
If its a food-container / microwave container it should do fine 👌
Do you have a brand or preference on what eggs to get?
TLDW: Small tank is triop abuse, leads to cannibalism, and small triops, and early death overall.
Get at -least- a 1-2 gallon tank for 1-3 triops max
how do you get the small ones apart from the adults? and what happens if u keep them all in the same aquarium?
If you keep them together in the same aquarium, this can go either perfectly fine or really bad if you have an Adult showing active Cannibalism ( watch the video on my channel about Cannibalism). I can tell them apart by my Journal-system, everything is noted down daily to enable me to keep track of everything 🙏
Also: Adults have egg-sacs, juveniles and Nauplii dont 😉
What kind of water? Do you use a filter? Do you use a heater? Do you use a bubbler? How often do you change the water? How do you acclimatize them from the hatch container to the tank?
All your questions are covered in separated videos on the channel.

Hey, I have a question. I'm keeping triops now and its going ok but during the hatching stage I was having trouble with keeping the water clean I've seen your other video and I will now be using leaf litter primarily almond leaves when hatching the eggs next time around and im aware this helps condition the water, will that itself help keep the water clean or is there other ways of doing this? I use a pipette to get most of the gunk out and did partial water changes but I still have an issue with nasty green water after a few days and unfortunately it seems like a few of my triops died because of it ive tried researching online for ways around this but not had much luck. I would very much appreciate your help! :)
Usually this happened to me aswell when I fed certain types of pellet-food really early that would just pollute the water...
Also direct sunlight on your hatchery will enable the algae to thrive really easily.
Eventually I developed the hatching method that I still use today and has given me pretty clear results but still included pippete interventions and syringe action ;)
The ingredients that are used in my "personal golden method" are listed below:
- Boiled rainwater (local clean source)
- Oak leave Detritus
- Elodea Oxygenplant
- Dosed amount of eggs
- Egg-ring that prevents the eggs from sticking above the waterline
(Feed a tiny bit of spirulina if necessary, but always after the first 24H )
When we look at the food source side: The Detritus provides micro-food and the leaf fibers will get eaten aswell as soon as the juveniles have developed their mandibles/jaws.
Botanically seen: Each leaf/tree type has their own botanical effects, I use Oak and Maple mostly because these leaves are easy accessible to me at some private places. ( Own garden and at work)
Cleaning:
-The Oxygenplant uses nutriënts from the water
-Daily pipette interventions, make sure you keep removing impurities when they are still "small".
Hope this helps a bit 🙏
Greets,
Triassic Park Triops 🙏
Stagnate water isn't good for living things. If you aren't going to get a water circulator with some filtration to remove pollutants, then you need to change the water in the container regularly. The smaller the container, the quicker you will need to change the water in it.
When hatching Triops you need very little food at first. I use detritus from dry leaf with rain water for start. After a day or two I put some infusoria with spiruline mix in hatchery water. Maybe 6-8 drops of this mixture once then twice then 3 times a day. Infusoria help the water to stay clear as they eat bacterias. And they are in return eat by baby Triops. Do not feed crushed pellets before a week and in a spot where you can remove the excess if needed. Water change after a week, slowly but after two weeks they should be able to handle 1/2 water change daily with normal aquarium water.
Are you using a air pump or a heater ? In what temperature you have to keep them ?
I personally use both a heater and a bubbler and keep them around 22-24°C usually
What sand did u use
Heya! I just got albino triops and im trying to set up a 10 gallon for some triops. I live in Texas so it is super hot here. My other established aquariums Temps are 78°-85° is this too hot for them? I have a sponge filter for the tank as well as undyed/unpainted sand. Spring water, soft, low ph. Just want to give them the best shot at life as I can. Thanks!
what is the kit that you used to get the eggs? I am interested in getting the same one
I'm currently selling these kits myself in case you're interested 🙏
I got a kit today and bought a 1 gallon tank last night before they got here. It was all i could afford at the moment. When should i get a bigger tank and can i hatch them in the one gallon tank instead of the bowl that they came with? I have the 1 gallon tank currently a little less than half full of spring water
Do u use any kind of filter/air thingy or do the plants do most of the work?
Heyo! We do have a bubbler in this tank but most of the oxygen is produced by placing the outtake of our filter above the Waterline. This causes a ripple effect on the water that exchanges oxygen into your water column. We dont rely on the plants only, but they do have a great benefit on this tank by removing lots of nutrients from the watercolumn and producing lots of extra oxygen.
This tank pretty much has a full oxygen saturation going on most of the Times. Not sure if it will be super beneficial, but we're trying to find out if it does help with raising the lifespan on Triops
@@TriassicParkTriops thank you this is super useful! 💟
What kind of plants do you use in your kit?
Mainly the oxygenplant Elodea 🙏
Thanks for the video! Think they can cohabitate with ghost shrimp?
I must say I havent tried ghost shrimp with Triops yet. but i think Triops could see them as a food source. If the shrimps molt, they are probably weakened and thats a fine moment for a triops to pick it up as food i could imagine.
Hey brother so im starting out with one of these kits but i did go and get a 1 gallon tank, 2.5 gallon tank and a 5 gallon tank. When is it safe to mive them to a larger tank after hatching ? I want to do this right so that i can get eggs and continue to have triops colonies like yu, i love these animals
Heyo!
There is a Transferring Tutorial on my channel aswell!
ua-cam.com/video/QWTLG1les5Y/v-deo.html
Also, do you have to have a filter and a pump?
Its not mandatory but helps out a great lot!
My triops died again :c
I will try now keeping shrimps
Noo :(
If they are small shrimp do not. They are extremely sensitive to water values, changes, bakteria. Any type of fluctuation usually kills them for me.
try bamboo shrimp they are insane. one time i had a shrimp that survived my heater exploding (electrocuting the water and killing every other fish). i then got rid of the dead fish and just kept plants in the tank for a few months so didnt bother with water quality or anything like that. my guy survived in there for months before i found him hidden in a corner. No given food and very little water changes for months lmao. Ended up calling him Hercules. Sadly he died after four years, im guessing from old age ;(((
If you want to start with a fairly low maintenance shrimp I recommend brine shrimp! I think fairy shrimp are very cute personally.
There are a few shrimp species that have sort of similar care to triops BUT they seem to be a little easier to manage as far as water quality goes since nitrates and ammonia don't seem make them sick. Or at least the water quality is not quite as high maintenance as it would need to be for other aquatic friends like fish and triop.
Is there specific water parameters for triops? Are they sensitive to ammonia? I want to create a planted tank for them and wonder if I need to cycle before introducing eggs. Thank you!
Heyo! Basically all aquatic life will have issues with ammonia. Its a waste product that needs to be cycled into the nitrogencycle. Ammonia will become Nitrite and Nitrite will become Nitrate. In the end, your plants will benefit from the Nitrate. For these reasons, we would Like to advice to always cycle your tank prior to starting a colony!
Introducing eggs can also be done with our Floating hatchery method. This way you're hatching Them in a floating container, while your tank is cycling in the meanwhile. For example:
-Setup tank at day 1
-Add floating hatchery at Day 14 ( already two weeks of cycling)
-Triops Hatch and live around 9-14 days in the hatchery ( additional 2 weeks of cycling)
🙏
@@TriassicParkTriops This is amazing thank you so much! I'm excited to give these cuties a happy life :)
Can they be kept with other fish?
can i use a 10 liter aquarium to care for triops?
I could advise to go for a larger setup, 10 L can only hold 1-2 Triops maximum. 40L would be better :)
What water are ylu using
Tap-water conditioned with Aquasafe and for the hatcheries boiled rainwater
NL i ges i got them to
My triops died after 2 weeks but have the same size of aquarium as you and i fet( sorry for my englisch) them well. Wat do i have to do?
Do you use normal water or they need always salty water?
Triops are freshwater crustaceans, they require freshwater:
-We use boiled rainwater for the Triops hatcheries
-We use tap-water for the maintank 🙏
Just brought a 3.5 gallon tank and want to know how to properly clean it.
What part of the cleaning process would you like to know more about? There is a video for hatchery cleaning on my channel for example 🙏
what do you do with them after they die? do they get buried?
Yes I bury them in an enclosed "container" to make sure the ground beneath doesn't release any eggs 🙏
@@TriassicParkTriops okay, thank you!
Can I house my triops with snails? I'd love to have some more biodiversity in my tanks and I don't want to accidentally kill any of the animals is there a list of other animals I can put in the tank
I get some small juvenile snails with my Triops by accident. Its fine but make sure they dont grow too large and attach to the headshields of the Triops too often! They make the Triops imbalanced and stressed out.
I always wondered if they could live in a planted tank...always assumed they were salt water shrimp like brine shrimp/sea monkeys
Luckily they are freshwater based critters and a planted tank would fit them really well!
@@TriassicParkTriops can I add them to a tank with other fish. I have 3 African dwarf, frogs a beta fish and some guppies in the tank all together living happily. Been trying to find some more interesting bottom feeders for the tank.
Is there a market for these animals?
Definitely, if you're looking for eggs: feel free to contact me on triassicparktriops@gmail.com 🙏
When I was a kid the packet didn’t mention their feeding or anything and they just ate eachother 😂I figured there was just a limited life span or something
Yeah, the cannibalism is also caused when they are with too many in a too small space.( The stupid plastic containers they sell with these terrible kits) This causes both active and passive cannibalism.
Can i use soil instead of sand
What kind of soil would you want to use ?
I personally stick with tiny gravel bits to extract the eggs easier.
Verkoop je nog steeds triops eitjes? :)
Zeker !
What temperature should I have my tank?
It depends on the species you're keeping 🙏
Ok cool thx
We didn’t r realize when we hatched our tripod that my husband was going to Pass away( he passed on the 15 th). My son is eight years old and has been staying at my and Anna goes home since it happened on and off but mostly at their home because his father passed away in our home. We are going to be moving but today his jay pods died. Don’t know why they were doing very well had them for 37 days and both of them died on the same day. I don’t know if it was the brain shrimp I fed them the night before I read instructions said that was one of the best things to feed them was going to get the blood worms but obviously I didn’t have a chance to. I was going to clean and get the eggs that I hopefully see in there in the sand out and start to dry them. The kit came with an extra set of eggs also after watching your video I do have a fish tank the same size as your small one. After watching this video on making a better set up I was going to get my tank set up and get things together so when my son does come home and is able Tuesday we can start the process of hatching and watching them grow again. If you can give me any other tips on what I told you I had done with the other ones that could help us out I would appreciate it. Also would like to know if different colored ones are different species that cannot be put together? I had saying eggs for sale for different colored ones and that it would be cool for him to have some different colored ones. Is it us some good pointers. Would like to keep going with these little guys they are pretty cool little pet for my boy. Like I said I would like to get some good pointers also I did feed them cut up carrots like the instructions said to do too. Would like to know if that was a good thing to do also. If you can answer me back that would be great thank you

For the aquariums we use our regional tap-water that's fairly high standard. We maintain the waterquality by using live-plants and a high volume filter. We use a Canister filter on our 60L maintank with Bucephalandra + Shrimps + Peacefull fishies and we mainly use Dennerle Eckfilters for our Triops tank and even our buce-propagator with a built in Eckfilter to produce a circular stream. Will upload a video about the Buce Propagator very soon 🙏

Dear Bella, Triops usually have a maximum lifespan of 3 months unfortunately
The point really is to aim at a longer lifespan every time, by collecting the eggs and hatching new generations you basically keep their way of living alive, and that brings the fun with keeping Triops.
I am intrigued as they look fascinating so probably will get some
