    Great video but i would highly suggest a lid on your tank. ADF have been known to jump out of the tank while swimming to the surface to breathe.

    Instead of using a baster just use tongs. They’re normally used for reptiles but they work perfect for feeding time. Simply easy and quick.

    I've always fed my frogs aquatic frog and tadpole pellets. Cuz my mom didn't want blood worms in the freezer. My coworker at Petco gave me her frog and the color is so different cuz she had been feeding blood worms I fell so bad! He's so much healthier. I finally convince my mom to let me in this video was very helpful !

    I had one of these frogs in my community tank as a kid. Back then fishkeeping was a massive failure, including my frog starving to death. I was told feed him freeze dried blood worms. Now I have a betta, which has been very successful thank goodness.

    I don't know if this is because of their time at the pet store, but all of my African Dwarf Frogs over the years have eaten veggie wafers or shrimp pellets. Or they swim up the top of the tank and steal the freeze dried blood worms and pellets I throw in for the Betta or other fish. They all kind of do different things over time. Highly trainable animals.

    My frogs love to stalk the floating bloodworms pouncing while floating just below the water line. The tank I have is 5.4 gallon panoramic glass cube with overwater filter that trickles so as to provide movement with just a weak current. They also hunt down frog pellets on the bottom. They seem to smell food and then hunt it down. It keeps them in good shape. I have java ferns in shallow gravel and they are sending out new baby ferns that will form some floating habitat for them. They seem very hungry so I’m gonna try to feed live blood or black worms. I understand they can live in the gravel providing a convenient smorgasbord all night when they are very busy swimming singing and mating. 🐸

  • @delennamachoo

    Sinking pellets works, too. They see the sinking pellet, and they come for it. Shrimp pellets, especially, fall and bounce along the bottom. Back when I started keeping the them in the 80s, there weren't a lot of options. Shrimp pellets became my goto, and I still keep them around.

    Does anyone have an opinion on housing dwarf frogs and apple snails? I’m getting so much mixed info. The snails in my 5 gallon with my betta at the moment but the tank is a 5 gallon and I’m reluctant to have multiple snails adding to nitrates in her tank so I’d like to move them to my ten gallon with my frogs. This was the original plan but multiple people at the pet store turned me off to this, but I’m used to the mixed opinions when it comes to fishkeeping.

    Like to add a couple of suggestions if I may.
    First off, I LOVE THE TANK DESIGN. Love the top water plants and the ground cover.
    However, you'd find great advantages in not completely filling the tank. ADFs do best when water is far shallower. You got a couple of misconceptions about their vision. While they are practically blind they do see well for what they can see, it's just that vision isn't their primary sense. What they can see is shades of light & dark, of movement, and with a visual acuity of a couple of inches above & beyond their noses. This means with shallower depths the frogs are good ambush predators of things floating on the water surface as they stand on the bottom with their noses only a couple of inches below the surface. From there, what they see is silhouetted against the sky above. You'll find that by feeding them floating food they'll strike it like a bass against a floating Junebug.
    My next suggestion is to totally get away from chemical treatment dechlorinators by NEVER USING TAPWATER. Regardless of dechlorination treatments, chlorine is still present, it winds up accumulating in the tank gravel. Chlorine kills your plants, kills your pets & specifically kills the microbes that is the backbone of your tanks filter system. You can't "train" plants or animals to live in tap water. That's impossible. The best solution is to ALWAYS use COMMERCIALLY BOTTLED SPRING WATER since it's never chlorinated.(Bottled DRINKING Water OTH is just filtered tap water) Heck, you can have your own designer label spring water made up to sell to your clients. Do that & the success rate for your tanks will go way up.
    A real bad idea for a ADF tank... using chemical declorinators & "Prime" is also introducing chemicals that "induce" production of a slime coat. Something good for fish perhaps, TERRIBLE for ADF's. ADF's naturally have no skin oil, they have no slime coat, it's the ONLY reason they live in water is because of this. Without skin oil or a slime coat, ADF's would dry out if out of water. But because of this they SHED THEIR OUTER SKIN from time to time. Thats why slime coat conditioners are terrible. With their need to shed, the skin needs to be brittle. But with an artificial slime coat, the skin is too difficult to shed. ADF'S CAN DROWN if they can't shed. The dead skin can constrain their movement, they can't swim to the surface & drown. Worse, dead skin can constrict blood flow to their limbs, they can lose a leg, foot or arm because the dead skin shuts off blood flow. INW, don't use chemicals.
    One other point. ADF's are primarily nocturnal. In nature there's safety in the darkness & they are far more active than most expect. A brightly lit tank in a brightly lit setting tends to lead to ADFs who spend all the day hiding. Use less lighting and put the tank in a less lit, & quiet location, the ADF's will respond by being more active.
    One last thing, don't use fresh bloodworm, if you want bloodworm, use frozen. There's a bacterium present in the skin of bloodworm that's a leading suspect in causing bloat. Freezing the bloodworm kills the bacterium. Ultimately, the best solution is to offer floating food pellets. The pellets have bloodworm, but also fish meal protein, & calcium, and phosphorous, and magnesium, & more vitamins & minerals. Its a far more healthy & balanced diet. The processed pellets are designed to float, then sink, satisfying both feeding behaviors of ambush feeding and ground foraging. Feeding only one or two single food types exclusively is not nutritious at all. How long would you stay healthy is you only ate hotdogs & nothing else?

    I have a 90 gal tank with 6 African dwarf frogs and around 10 corydoras catfish, I feed them frozen blood worms which works just fine. I thaw them out and pour them over the front of the tank, I'v got the frogs tap trained so they know foods coming, the corydoras stir up the worms which attracts the frogs to eat. I use to baste the worms directly in front of the frogs, but I don't have to anymore and they all eat just fine. So ADFs aren't these super finicky eaters that places claim they are.

    • @jlowe8614
      @jlowe8614 11 місяців тому

      I think this tank is way too small for African Dwarf Frogs, or pretty much anything for that matter. I'm very tired of people using these tiny tanks. I wouldn't put any animal (besides maybe shrimp or snails) in anything smaller than 10 gallons. Surviving does not mean thriving.
      Large fish do scare frogs, so I would say it depends on the size of the cat fish (since they share the bottom space). Make sure they have plenty of hiding spaces. You also have to make sure it's not too deep for the frogs to come up for air easily.

    • @kari500
      @kari500 7 років тому +2

      4 months late, I know, but a 5 gallon is TOO small for 2 african dwarf frogs and a Betta; the ammonia will spike frequently, and they need more room. You have to choose either the 2 frogs, or the Betta. The reason being, adf are pretty calm bottom dwellers, and bettas are known to be aggressive. If it doesn't work out, like it did with my two adf and betta at first, you'll have to divide the tank. I divided my 10 gallon because my betta was territorial, and almost bit one of my frogs, but dividing them helped him get along with the frogs. In conclusion, the bigger the tank the better. Personally, I think my 10 gallon is small lol

      PetTide I’m well aware they don’t jump out just to get air. They will also jump out of the water if the water parameters in the aquarium aren’t correct.

      Tia Tokkesdal yeah, but that’s similar to lots of fish

      PetTide frogs are amphibians fish aren’t. They can live in similar conditions but that’s about as much as they have in common.

      Tia Tokkesdal yes but these frogs are *fully* aquatic, they’ll die in under half an hour of air

    Filter? Lid? Heater? The fact beta fish eat dwarf frogs so u need way more space? Minimum tank aside for one beta is 5 gallons?

    This video is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for the information!
    Next time though would it be possible for you to either write the plants and equipment brands down either on the screen or in the description? I am looking to start a frog tank but have no idea how to spell those plants names to be able to buy them lol

    Is it safe to have a tank like this with two frogs and a beta?

    • @taziiah8955

      I'm no expert but I've heard they're compatible but it depends on the temperament of them and the size of the tank. I have a 10 gallon with a male betta, 2 frogs and 5 tetras. So far its gone good, ive only had the frogs and tetras in the tank for a couple weeks and other than one of the frogs nipping a couple times when I first put them in I've had no problems :)

    there's something moving in the substrate at the middle of the tank, looks like worms wiggling or something...

      yes they will. maybe she took the lid off for the filming of this video.. at least i hope so, but i still doubt because of the water level. its to the top and if you put a lid on it, the frogs have no room to surface..

      @@aquagirltalks479 the tank you used here is 4.4 gallons? In between using a four gallon cube or something bigger even though they seem to enjoy the four gallon cube with plants an rocks.
