New Top High Power Mid Drive eBike Kit for 2024?

- The bafang BBSHD has been the most popular motor for mid drive ebike conversions for quite a while now. Unfortunately bafang hasn’t updated this mid drive kit in a while and new companies like cyc with their stealth and pro gen 3 models have closed the gap. Recently cycmotor released the photon, a much improved mid drive conversion kit with a new design. It appears imminent the company will release a new high power model soon possibly called the cyc proton.

I have the cyc x1 pro gen 3 and while it has been amazing fun, the strain on normal bike parts is extreme and has led to lots of maintenance. Brake retunes, full rear hub reajustments, new chains, etc.
Bite the bullet buy an enduro bike KTM etc.
Those cyc motors will rip cassettes apart..U should do a vid for specific chains, cassettes, and drive train overall that can handle powerful mid drive motors
cyc is making a more powerful version called the proton which will probably have similar specs to what you suggested. The problem with cyc motors is that they're not user serviceable like the bbshd/02. That alone combined with the fact that you can push the bbshd well past the 1000w nominal means that unless bafang stops making the bbshd it will most likely stay top dog.
Well it’s 2 months later, bafang has announced they’ll stop making the BBSHD, cyc motors are known to have overheating issues under the loads they rate their products for, and I’m putting a BAC 800 and 72V battery on my BBSHD
I ordered the DM01. Not because 72V but early testing with it looks promising. Higher internal gearing is interesting. I think it will be a reliable motor with much better cooling than the Photon. I also don't want to support cyc until they offer service parts to users.
No sign of the Proton as of July 2024, but my Photon on 48V has peaked above 1800W. Chain/cassette need to be in good order to avoid jumping, and it has been quiet and reliable for 2300 miles and more than a year on a Marin FS-MTB. Heat-limited long-term rating seems to be around 750W but can manage more than twice that for a minute or two. Powerful enough for many.😀
I received an email from CYC that did in fact admit there is a Proton expected early in 2024.
My BBS02 used off road on a hardtail in pretty severe terrain has functioned perfectly for eight years with absolutely no maintenance. Maybe Bafang hasn't changed it because it doesn't need any revisions. Personally, I really like the fact the "guts" are in an enclosed system.
It still does not have torque sensor. Big no no in 2023. In order to calculate human pedaling power you need cadence sensor and torque sensor. This way motor can smoothly amplify your pedaling input. I have CYC STEALTH and it works great. Very natural feeling.
Bbshd still has the crown. Cyc pro gen 3 is not ready yet. Had the pro for 500miles then went back to bbshd. And on the forums I heard about loads of issues with the cyc motors. You have to send them the motor and they take ages to send stuff. Website says delivery in 8 weeks but it took 13 weeks to be delivered.
You are obviously a capable do it yourself bike mechanic with both cyc and bbshd experience. Have you seen what the folks at High Voltage light electric vehicle channel is doing with the BBSHD and the BAC-855 controller? ua-cam.com/video/FKFoP9Er0RM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=HighVoltage
I heard that CYC put the proton on hold until they fix the problems with the photon and release Gen2.
Sounds like what is happening, and is the right thing to do imo
@NPLVentures they recently announced the release of X1 Pro Gen 4, available to order starting in January.
The noise of the X1 was from the planetary gearbox, not the outboard chain.
Solar Trips race uses mostly bafangs
ToSeven motors has torque sensing mid drive motors that look promising(DM-01 & DM-02). I’ve had a CYC Stealth with no issues but there social media is littered with motor complaints. My BBSHD pulls 4 times the power it’s rated for with external controller and I have no problems with the motor or my well built bike to handle it. I’m still on the same chain and drive system for the last two years. If you really want to talk mid drives get yourself a Lightening Rods motor.
Are you using the BAC-855 controller for your BBSHD? If no, which controller are you using? Thanks in advance :)
@@JohnDoe-gn5bc Yes I have the 855 from High Voltage with Eggrider display for multiple modes of riding and programming. 72V Molicel battery.
@@kmtnbike1117 I'm jealous!! Thanks for the reply. I know well just how amazing that setup is and plan to open my wallet this winter and do the same. Do you have any issues, concerns or regrets?
@@JohnDoe-gn5bc no issues whatsoever. I have 2 High Voltage kits. An older BAC asi 800 that is only capable of 52V on a Scrambler 20” wheel bike that still pushes about 3200w that is a ton of fun to ride. My other full suspension bike has been seen here on this UA-cam channel along time ago when he showed different custom builds. It has been upgraded now with my 300a molicel battery and the new 855 HighVoltage kit. The bike is an absolute dream to ride. I pedal it on single track and can hit speeds of 50mph pushing around 13000rpms. Good luck on your build.
look into QS motor, they have the good hub motors and also high power mid drives. CYC too expensive and prototypey. Watch luna cycle open the cyc motor
I have a qs 205 5t motor that I was using for a project that I put aside in late 2019. I have the motor brand new, but I'm unsure what to do with it.
I have got walk mode on my bike, which you could call creep mode 😅 I must say my bbs02 and bbshd haven't given me any trouble yet , nor have i broken any chains so the gear sensors bust be working pretty good
BBSHD is tried and true reliable and modded can be nearly as good as the x1 pro for speed at 72v. also quiet with a PEEK gear mod
Can anyone buy the peek gear or metal gears ANYWHERE anymore? Other than custom
Fyi I got 2 bbshd and not about that cyc
@@MikAnimal hv kits sells a peek gear ⚙️ don’t know why Luna cycle stopped
@@ryanmfitz last I checked hv was all out of gears too. I’ll double check wid them
@@ryanmfitz I did not see any peek or metal gears for sale on any site since I got my bbshd a year and a half ago 🤷🏽♂️. I don’t look daily so maybe i missed it
Would you put a mid drive in your P51? Hope to see finish P51 and your thoughts on your upgrades:)
Photon is probably the best mid drive motor ever. For those who don't want excessive power, and who are retrofitting to a modern 1x, Boost148 mtb, there may be no other sensible choices. I've had mine since April, and it is way better than any other ebike I've ridden, including retrofits and OTS manufactured.
It seems likely that CYC are shifting their attitude to service and addressing reliability concerns, and may be delaying the Proton while they do so. I hope that is the case.
Do you know of any brand taking a motocross bike and slapping some pedals and a motor on the bike?
Nice bike
The X-1 gen 3 CYC refused to sell the x-12 controller with it. Therefore it was limited to 3500w. The gen 4 now comes with the x-12 controller which is higher wattage. I can’t see this ever being a trail riding machine on max power pedaling or throttling. Which means it will still be a problem for the street riding moped crowd. The motor is a fraction of the size as a Suron motor with more power. Think about that for a minute before you buy it to ride as a moped.
All reliability problems were with people max throttling on the road riding like it is a moped.
It’s a mtb motor made for pedal assist mode.
Same holds true for the proton. Pedal not throttle full time and it is a good product. Use it for a moped=problems.
Say for a 375 pounds big dude. I want to turn my Surely Big Fat Dummy into the most powerful long range for really high long steep grades. Whats my best options.
I left my bike “on” while parked and it went into creep mode (walk mode) at 3am and launched my girls bike across the room 😂😳👏🏽
YES!
You are completely out of line on Bafang. There are mods to comfortably get 2500 watts from a BBSHD. I have a 1500 Watt BBSHD on the 5th frame 5000+ miles not a stitch of trouble almost all in South New Jersey sand with semi-fatty's and 26'ers. Not much off roading up in Union County these days used to ride a dirt bike there in the 70's. BTW - LunaCycle (US Based) has a 1500 Watt kit for $670.
No 2 side torque sensing. And that’s if you do a square taper
@@MrBjorntsc I never needed it.
cyc looks good on paper but they're chock full of reliability issues including burning up
This doesn't work well for a long time with normal bicycle chains with this much power. Unless you feel like buying a new chain every 2 weeks lol
Great point, a powerful mid drive requires an equally powerful drive train
On my E-MTB (Yamaha pw-x 60 nm) I used 4 chains in one year, now I ride a hub motor and have had the same one for 2 years ^^.@@NPLVentures
It's not the chain that wears out. Its the cassette. The chain last and last and lasts. Ask me how I know
What state?
Tour de France top speed 65mph. I’ve gotten 70mph down a mountain drafting a car.
I've done over 70kmh with a MTB down a fire road.
Cyc sucks , I’ve done so many searches for cyc and i always end up watching problems videos about how the motors break under rated load and then you have to send the whole motor back to CYC because they don’t want you to open it. 😂 cyc manufacturing process sucks they hand glue the magnets 😂 not evenly either
Bafang motor like duracell
I don't know where you get your sources. CYC community groups on Facebook have people complaining about exactly thr opposite, that CYC required them to open up their motors to check the source of issue to confirm what's wrong to have things replaced accordingly.
But one of these in January took 6 months to get here ,then it didn't work little communication with the company still got the motor still doesn't work $1000 Down the drain.!! Expensive cheap Chinese crap..🤬👈
The Chinese stuff isn't that bad unless you get something defective.
You just have to oversize everything a bit and then limit it so that the stuff doesn't get too hot.
You will have more fun with an 800$ bike from China than with a high-quality German 2000€ bike with a Yamaha engine.
@@Bergwacht I'll be fair since everything comes from China ,25% of it aint junk ...?
If that helps🤷♂️
Questiun : what are the diferences betwene scooters and cars ? Answer : the cars is a wepon
At 1500 watts that ebike is illegal everywhere in the country not to mention illegally disengaging the speed safety protocols. Since it doesn't qualify as a class 1, 2 or 3 ebike you can't take advantage of favorable rules and laws for ebikes like using bike lanes, paths or trails or operating under bicycle rules. In the event of an injury accident (let's hope it's not a child) you will be charged with felony reckless endangerment and probably lose everything you have in attorneys fees, penalties and judgements. Hope you don't have a family or house.
OK narc
@@hughjeffncok OK loser.
Legal in colorado
@cmgeolo as I understand it CO still limits motor watts to 750.
