I'm really impressed at what CYC Motor has achieved, especially with the Photon. They really got the configuration almost completely right, this is the only mid chainless motor that fits modern alloy 1x and Boost mtbs that is affordable and available worldwide. The motor itself has been continually upgraded, and support is excellent and friendly. These more powerful motors just dont interest me, but my Photon has been superb, far exceeds OTS emtbs by a long way.
on a side note, the cyc gen 4 doesn't even break 52 Celsius and the bbshd I used to run would hit 90c every ride.
Dude! I'm running dual 52 volt 40amp bms batteries and I can't wait to upgrade to 72 volt 100 amp bms! Got mine on day one. This kit is just beyond! I smoke stock sur rons!
John, I love this kit! Mine is on an Iron Horse SGS downhill bike running 24 inch rear wheel with 26 inch front. KKE front fork.. Love this kit! I mounted a Sur Ron Light Bee rear wheel to my bike and a DMR front wheel. The Sur Ron rear wheel fitted to the 135mm QR with very little mods.
Any videos or pics ? Love to see your wheel conversion
A lot of people talk about the cyc noise in a negative way, but I love it. I wish it was louder.
Closing in on 70 years of age here with over 200k miles under my belt around BC, WA, ID, MO, UT, CA, and Mexico. Hit 7 times by cars. 2 of those were NDE's (near death experiences) where I was hospitalized. The first one was several years ago in Mexico City where a taxi driver cut me off in an intersection where I was doing almost 40kph on a slight descent on a major road. The only thing that saved me was my years of experience and instincts. I threw my weight as far back as possible and turned my front wheel into the car in a split second. Front wheel collapsed on his fender taking a lot of the force as I crumpled into him and I ended up with a broken clavicle and ribs but walked away from it. Second NDE was back here in BC just over 3 years ago where an SUV crushed me in a roundabout. I woke up in the hospital with a shattered left humerus, facial lacerations, and lots of bruising. Shortly after that I built my first eBike with the first CYC X1 Stealth after a ton of research. I watched a lot of videos on different channels to understand what people had tested to learn from them. I wanted a torque sensing mid-drive motor for pedal assist so the X1 stealth was the best option. Especially for the mountain roads I wanted to ride on here. I bought a 12 year old Brodie Bandit for only $170 on FB marketplace and converted it. It had Shimano dual piston hydraulic brakes but after almost 20k of riding and 2 near collisions with bad drivers where my front brake pads exploded from slamming on the brakes I sunk $700 into quad piston SRAM Code RSCs and bigger rotors. I had migrated to the GEN 3 X1 Stealth by this time as I had worn out my cranks pedaling on the GEN 1. Gen 3 and the new spline design cranks are far superior. Although I have the full twist throttle I still just use pedal assist 98% of the time. I just, last week, finished a new build on a 2024 Soma Riff frame. I migrated the Gen 3 Stealth motor, 52 volt battery, brakes, accessories etc. to the new frame. Added a Shimano Linkglide drivetrain, eBike rated Rockshox 120mm front fork, so I could upgrade my front rotor to 220mm, and a set of hand-built 27.5" wheels. DT Swiss 350 hubs front and rear. The rear is the hybrid 36h version designed for eBikes. DT Swiss rim front, Cliffhanger rim rear, and a set of 2.15" Schwalbe Marathon Tour Plus moped rated tires. In the past week I have over 200 km of back country forestry road climbing and descending. Incredible. So much fun. I bring my Electrify Bike 200watt folding solar panel to charge my battery in the back country so I have the juice to get home. As far as road riding experience I live just a few km out of town in a rural area. Road speed limit is 60kph but most drivers are doing 80kph. I have had several RCMP pass me where I am doing 50kph - 60kph and they ignore me. And you can't miss me. Lot's of lights, clothing so bright people have to wear sunglasses when looking at me. And an upgraded 50kph rated bright orange bike helmet. There is a very nice demarcated shoulder for the most part. But there is a section where there is no shoulder and sign that says bikes take the road for safety. The speed limit in that stretch is 50kph. For safety I do 50 kph just to get through that short stretch but still cars/trucks will swing into the oncoming lane and pass me at 60+ kph. Asshole drivers. When I am in town I generally only use my motor when accelerating from a stop at intersections, again for safety reasons. When I am coming into town I average 35+ kph without the motor. The speed limit here for eBikes is 32kph. On the flats I easily pedal faster than that with the motor off which is legal. It only takes a few bad apples to ruin it for the rest of us. Oh, almost forgot. After building my first eBike I found in the first 8 months or so I had driven my a total of only 3 times. So I canceled my insurance. The savings on gas, maintenance, and insurance has more than paid for my eBike habit. And I am very healthy for my age.
Amazing! Does the CYC make any noise when pedalling with the motor off?
@@Alley00Cat I have the kit uninstalled here, and they have sprag clutch and pretty much silent,, all the noise come from internal gears in motor
John, I’m attempting to follow the build you’ve done on this Norco Parkshore bike. My only question is that you in the head of CYC speak about a 67 V battery pack and I cannot locate that on their website can you please help me Jeff thank you Jeff.
In the same boat here
I need that battery
@@kristian1679 apparently it's in preproduction, I was told it will be available soon !
@@DETZY_ awesome thank you! It’s the solution I’ve been looking for.
@@kristian1679 same , going under frame behind fromt wheel on a duely by any chance?
what a nice ride, currently doing an old big hit with 72v X1 pro gen 3 for the kids, unfortunately the kit is for wrong bb so trying to sort that, we've had all the electrics fired up and it realy screams and instant response, also has all the CYC carbon fibre upgrades which are very reasonably priced, the headlight kit is great too, can't wait to finish it
Great video! Do you have any idea when that battery will come out???
Thanks!! Need advice to adapt this motor into a 2011 Trek Remedy 9.8 carbon frame with BB90 bottom bracket. Can I get to know exact size and diameter of the screwable bracket cups that hold the spindle inside the bottom bracket? Which bottom bracket size should I use? 86mm 100mm ? Thanks
would this motor be good on like a surron like bike? i got a gt73 and its like a cheaper surron but the speed isn't as fast as id like it to be would this motor be good for my bike?
I didn't know if it would be anything close to plug-n-play, if that's what you're looking for
that new battery is interesting any details on that?
also, might wanna not pass pedestrians at 35mph on mixed use path... unless ur go pro speedometer was bluffing
yea, demonstrate removal, replacement of battery, strength of mounts
i had gen2 on my kona and it was the best ride I ever had, much more fun than any electric bike, but at 4000-5000w there was too much trouble with the chain line. for reliability its better stay below 2k
Guess some like the trill more than they like components 😅
What kind of mid drives are the e motto bikes using like the E Ride bikes and Surrons? I want to go speed like the e motto bike but want the style of a BMX bike or mountain bike. Don’t want bike that looks like a dirt bike. I want to look park legal! 😏
A lot of those have big socks, brakes, gears and roller chains. If they don't cover them up with fairings, then they would still look like a dirt bike
Just ordered mine for my Giant Yukon 1 fat bike.
Will the battery fit on the underside of the frame for better lower COG? Also, not sure how long Norco’s chain system will continue to work it’s the torque.
where did you get the battery?? , it is not on the web site and is not commercially available ..
Amazing performance; do you have info about heat/overheat indicators and protection for this motor? In Texas, where I live, heat and high humidity are the big destroyers of both motor and battery longevity. Nice to see a big battery with some flexibility for mounting; this has been an issue for some conversions I've done...bike balance matters. Don't know what happened, but Bafang seemed to back into the shadows not long after the the introduction of their Ultra motor, designed to be used by bike manufacturers who needed an integrated motor/frame design.
Yeah, bafang got on the OEM train, and hasn't looked back
@@BlueMonkeyBicycleshow can you not? They made it mainstream.
That’s the dream.
I haven’t ridden a CYC. I’ve seen they’re lighter than the bafang alternatives but heard they feel less torquey to ride.
What’re your thoughts & do you have a preference?
Im in Texas, rode the X1 Pro Gen 3 in 90 degree heat at 1000 watts on the throttle. Things got pretty hot but you could still touch the battery and motor with your hand. At 5kw sustained, you would definitely run into current limiting. The rating of 5-6kw should be interpreted in the sense that motor will be very reliable at lower power levels.
@@NikolaiVozza True, but 5K watts is a bit of overkill 🤣 just to run cooler. I am curious about the performance under a realistic load and climbing. The bike frame and brakes aren't adequate for the top abilities of a motor that size. Just a thought question. Your setup is more what I'd typically build.
@@BT_life2yes the bad ang does seem to have a lot of torque, I have bbshd 1000 , set to off road mode it has a lot of pull, I prefer it in street mode , it is a bit kinda to the chain and gears and goes fast enough for my recumbent trike.
I have a gen 4 on my Cannondale Jekkel 700 with a tiny 10s 4p battery and it hit 40mh no problem. i am saving up to make a 20s pouch cell pack 120a bms with the 52T front ring on it now and 11T back it should be wiled
I'm still on a gen 0 Cyclone 3Kw system from about 8 years ago, but I absolutely have my eye on these new offerings. Only thing I don't like is the software not being open source.
Writing to give props to the grandaddy Cyclone
Will that battery fit on a transition patrol ?
Can we have ride modes programed so you have a boost, trail, eco and walk?
Wished to see how the A series battery clip and unclips from its holder, and how the holder is mounted on the bike. Video about this soon?
I see the battery is not available on CYC for sale yet
18s4p pack coming soon
@@cycmotorwhen? This pack looks like it would fit my build perfectly. I'm literally about the pull the trigger and order my third cyc motor conversion kit and would like to have this battery for it.
Like the battery pack for full suspension mtbs
What A VIEW behind you in the last scene
My X1 Pro has a max of 48mph running at 52v and 60amps. I love my conversion. Plus my wallet is so much lighter now, that's gotta add a few mph too, right?
It's worth noting that you can run this at 1k or 2k watts if you prefer to look after your running gear and motor given that CYC aren't well known for their reliability. Also could you please share your experience with the torque sensing / pedal behavior? It's a major factor for me anyway in deciding whether to purchase or not. THanks.
Nice bike. Clean build. First thought. That satelite chain pulley above the crank. Yeah....
What voltage is that battery? 60V?
67V :)
I'm kinda crazy so I'd put it on my OC Chopper edition Schwinn Stingray but not until I do a fork upgrade. Of course, I doubt it would fit so maybe a recumbent tadpole instead.
Great review! Keep these up.
Stuff the whiners.
This motor doesn’t look much larger than the rest of their range.
The interview with the company owner was excellent.
Have these guys started working with anyone to produce decent dual suspension bikes yet?
Let's just say it'll be good to keep an eye on the market this year
Will definitely put this on a Commencal Meta
assuming they use 40T cells,14S4P can be something like 52V 16Ah. that is way too small to sustainably provide that much power efficiently and without heating up very quickly. why stick to these outdated cylindrical cells when there are badass high energy density semi solid state batteries available? arranged longitudinally (two 7s packs in series)you can make a 45cm long slim battery that fits under the downtube, it has more capacity, is actually made for high power applications (drones) and will live a lot longer.
For comparison, I used a 1400Wh 14S pack for my latest Bafang M435 build and it's totally badass. range is more than your butt can handle
Can you share some links / suppliers for these batteries?
@@BramBiesiekierski sorry, you did not tag me, haven't seen your question
Great setup for MID engine bikes.
My preference is for a 2 wheel drive (obviously 2 hub motors) e-mountain CARGO bike like mu current E-CELLS Super Monarch Crown. It is a hauler with a 400 pound capacity (rider weight included) that I use for hunting and camping.
BUT... when GRIN Technology comes out (soon I hope) with their FREEGEN freewheeling REGENERATIVE BRAKING hubs I will convert my bike to that. It is a very innovative Israeli technology that GRIN is licensing and gives REGEN braking ONLY when the brakes are applied, Otherwise you have standard freewheeling, thus the clever name FREEGEN.
6kw will distroy the teeth in the rear cassette in less than 250 miles.
Ask me how many wheels I went through before I gave up on big power mid drives.
Do tell
How many
4 Cassettes. Tbh a couple were still usable under normal use but no good with anything above human power levels as once they go they just skip as soon as you got Wot.
For me, the sweet spot is about 1kw peak power for MTB riding, thats about where a super human rider would be so most of the gear can take that if your retro converting.
The wheels too? I would think there are some unaffordable drivetrains that could last 500 miles or more. Were the pawls inn the freewheel torn up?
Umm...They should sell frames and suspension along with kits. We can build it at home.Or have a list of bikes currently for sale that are perfect for each kit.. instead of us having to guess and cross our fingers buying bikes.
Would you sell the bike ? I need a good one with cyc
i wish they would focus on making the motor and batteries more compact instead of creating more powerful motors
This is the exact type of thing that is making us get flooded with regulations. I really have no problem with these fast and powerful E bikes. But I would also like to see them called something else. Maybe the legally classified could be electric bicycles and these other things E bikes. That way when the regulations come down, they will not end up affecting people that are out wanting to ride like they are on a bicycle not a motorcycle. I will also say I believe that ship has sailed long ago.
Yeah, I think a new classification could be useful
3,5kw nominal is actually just enough power for me towing a trailer...
Why would anyone riding on mountain trails require anything over 350watts, if you go beyong 20mph in a mountain trail, you will most likely crash. Furthermore, you are reducing your range whenever you run beyond 750watts which translate to not enough to get home and what is the deal with strapping a big ass battery beyond the width of any bike frame? The idea spec for an ebike would be staying within 20mph on the trail, and 30mph on pavement, 60 miles range on the trail and 100 miles range on pavement, weights around 50 lb, quiet, balanced weight for jumps, and doesn't impede pedaling or adjust rider position. If you can make a motor that compatible with current mounting frame of bafang, brose, shimano, boash, yamaha motors, that will be a big plus as it opens up for more bike frame
Nice, but. That bike likely cost 4-5x my car!
The motor is now more powerful , you can run your bike with a single speed
Just wish they sell whole bikes. don't feel like building one.
Ristretto 512
So you were doing 40 mph on a walking cycling trail? Usually this kind of trail will have a 10 mph speed limit. Over 4 times the safe speed for that kind of trail. People are going to be killed by this.
So the mileage question was never answered.
Deleted my comment in short order huh.
I haven't deleted anything.
@@BlueMonkeyBicyclesokay then I’ll put it here. I’m assuming that pass on a pedestrian was a setup. I really hope so because if not it’s incredibly stupid. I break some laws but I would never in a million years do that. I walk the bike past dogs and kids regularly. There are a million better ways to show off the Gen 4 than that. Multiuse paths past a person that is not aware it’s 10-20 kph max. Better still call out and make them aware. I just don’t understand what you are trying to achieve here other than throw yourself and the rest of us that enjoy this kind of riding under the bus. There are not many views. It’s not not too late to delete this intro and redo it.
Ya got me! It was setup. I might be able to hack the intro off through the UA-cam editor. I'll take a look.
@@BlueMonkeyBicyclesI am glad that’s the case.
Ok, it's gone now 👍
Amazing motor but not for me as it’s not in the spirit of a pedalec category it’s basically dirt motor bike this will need to have insurance , mot, road tax etc.
I agree, not really my cup of tea, personally. I'm excited that a new sport seems to be emerging.
Agreed; however, CYC does offer other lower powered systems. Options, folks.
Company comes out with a product that makes better affordable transportation available for everyone, and you want to restrict it and tax it? Makes perfect sense.
@@NikolaiVozza it's a fact of life this motor is currently in the UK illegal and rightly so, the only way this motor would become legal you will have to get it registered with the DVLA, road tax, have it insured, subjected to mot and ride it only on roads not cycle paths. I agree it's a powerful motor exciting to ride I'm sure but don't expect it to be free of stricter regulation it ain't going to happen.
Prices are too high and it's no sense right now. You spent almost 2,3 K and just have the motor and battery, what about the controller, display, etc..? And that's keeping apart the headaches of solving each build problem... There are full electric bikes like Lankeleisi X3000 max, with 2000W dual motors and a Samsung 20Ah battery, pushes like a beast and is a complete system with awesome specs, and the price right now with the available discounts is 2k the whole bike with 3yrs warranty
You can also get a bus pass.
Or a set of rollerblades
@@BlueMonkeyBicycles Nah, your mom takes me everywhere I need for free
How charming
This guy deletes comments? I hate that more than dumb and pointless, insulting comments
Huh?
Sorry ,just looks primitive with that open chain .
I think powerful e-bike kits like this may result in fatalities and serious injuries, and then more e-bike laws will follow. I think most of us on e-bikes need 750 watts and lower as power goes as most of us are commuters and runners of errands. A small number of high-speed bikes may hurt all of us a lot. Maybe they should try to separate these higher power e-bike motors that are almost as powerful as a gas-powered dirt bike or motorcycle.
Maybe so. I personally ride at these speeds very rarely, like once every 4 years. Although it's exhilarating, I'm scared to do much past 30mph.
That’s why you shouldn’t think.
You’re a muppet.
Hot rod hub motors pushing 6kw have been available for quite some time, and yet there isn't a widespread epidemic of people being dangerous on those. This market is small and niche, because not many people are doing to take on a conversion project, and those who do usually have a good head on their shoulders to not be dumb with it.
Mate if I'm on the road I can go as fast as I want
No one who rides crazy like that will do the work to install the kit. They will just buy a suron
Ok...About $2000 for the motor and battery, then you still need to find/purchase a full decked out conventional bike. That is WAY TOO expensive of an option for most. $1250 for a motor is ridiculous, when you can now find eBikes that have just as strong a motor with the whole eBike costing slighly over that cost. HARD NO FOR ME.
I would not trust a $1,250 electric bike with this kind of a system.
You will definitely NOT find a bike for $1250 with 5kw rated power.
40 mph over the space of a football field is fast and powerful? You are funny.
The chances that CYC is just a branch of Bafang are quite high btw. The tooling needed to make something like this is extremely expensive, even in Asia. A group of enthusiast as they say in their about us on their website did not casually raise millions of dollars and go into business against a giant like Bafang. An investor betting a team of 35 can best a company that makes most of the hub motors on ebikes available seems very very unlikely.
What a crock. Nope.
I think you've misunderstood a few things
you are good at speaking, but your biking shots are poor
To be honest, it should be illegeal to even sell these kits. If a cop gets someone with this kit mounted to a bike - straight to prison and no driver license for the rest of his life as the person shows that he is unable to respect the easiet laws. There must be a point when enough is enough. This is straight criminal and you drove this thing on streets, what is absolutly unacceptable. 👎
Straight to prison? No more driving licence for the rest of his life? What r u smokin bud
I mean yeah using a bike at those speeds on a mixed path is insanely stupid and careless, I agree on that, but banning the sale of these kits is just outlandishly stupid. Go ahead and ban all cars that do >200hp while you're at it
Yall can do whatever makes you happy in Europe lol. We in United States are going to have fun.
Yea this is all fine in the USA. We don’t have the same rules
@@CaseyKoplinCk13 You in the US can use 750W motors + max 28mph. The rest is a motorcycle and needs a license plate.
@@NikolaiVozza Thats why e bikes get banned at more and more places in the US. While it's getting illegal more and more in the US, we in Europe will still have fun.
That rude behavior and who cares is the reason, why you will get into trouble.
