Hi, Mell. You're a rock star. I find that no one is cutting hair with these rules or guides anymore. It's all one length, straight off - even the curly cuts. My hair isn't wildly curly like yours, but it is curly. I need a curly cut. I do not trust stylists anymore. I love this cut, but not ambitious enough yet. I've been using the pigtail cut you put out for about a 1.5 years now and I miss this shape you're putting in your hair. This is how hair cuts work. :'(

Hey Mel, I followed this video and MY HAIR is now PERFECTLY shaped. I’m so thankful I don’t have to spend $100+ on a curly cut that I’d end up having to try a fix without a guide or method. No more bell shaped hair! Woo hoo!

I couldn’t be more grateful for this video. I had glorious hair just like this cut that I cut myself over time and I did it by accident. So after getting butchered at a salon while trying to get a trim a year and a half ago and letting it grow out I couldn’t figure out how I managed to get that shape again and am definitely not willing to try a salon again. My hair looks incredible now and I couldn’t be happier! Thank you!!

I just want to thank you. I came across your channel a few weeks ago and have now gone 2 weeks fully embracing my curls. It's felt so intimidating with all the products and techniques out there, but you made it so approachable. And you've helped me address that perceptions of my curly hair as a kid definitely colored my view of it growing up. As a mom of a 1 year old, I don't know if I have a lot of time for all the styling I'd like to help speed the retraining process, but already my hair is doing better than it has in a long time.
And hopefully as my daughter grows and (likely) has her own curly hair, I can teach her how to love and care for it too.
Leaving the comment here so hopefully you see it.

I was the same way. One day my husband (who is a construction engineer) said "Let me cut your hair". 😮 He's been cutting it for 20 years now. He's a perfectionist, so he looks at it for days afterwards making minor snips here and there.

I’ve basically given up and wear my hair in a bun or braid 90% of the time. Three hair dressers have told me they are scared to cut my long hair shorter because they don’t know what it will do. I’m so frustrated. 😔
My hair has changed so much as it goes grey. I don’t know what to do with it. It has become fine and I now have a little bit of everything going on from loose waves, every other wave to almost kinky, some curls and a few cork screws just for fun.
I have learned so much from your videos. Thank you for all you do to educate us.❤

I have had so many bad haircuts by hairdressers who didn't know how to cut curly hair or who didn't understand my hair is curly and not wavy, one even told me my hair was not curly it was straight and frizzy 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Since lockdown I started cutting my own hair and now I have proper curls thar sit properly. I have even experimented with curly bobs and longer curly styles. You deserve a medal for your services to curly girls 💖

So, a few days ago, I found your channel and have watched so many videos of yours so far.
I started to embrace my curls in 2019, and i didn't know how to look after them at all. I have used so many different techniques that just didn't work. They always ended up frizzy by the end of the day, so obviously, i rewashed and styled each morning. Just following your routine and advice on the silk bonnet, my curls are still intact and not frizzy at all. I am amazed. For the first time in years, I'm rocking day 2 curly hair and have saved so much time.
You are truly the curly hair guru. Thank you so much 💓

Very informative, thank you, I watched this multiple times. I have given a lot of simple one length, blunt cut, haircuts to female friends. Whether a simple dusting, or 20”+, same process. Yesterday I gave a haircut to a friend who had not had her hair cut in over three years. 8” came off at her request to get her hair looking nice. The request from another friend that will not go to a salon, because they butchered her hair, has very thick curly hair and she wants to grow it out. Last time they cut it wet, simple straight cut, full thickness, and they styled it to hide the mess. But when she washed it at home, she had a pyramid effect. I did the sectioning, starting from the top, I knew that you need to cut manageable sections of hair, hacking ponytails off are a recipe for disaster. I trimmed and gave her a nice rounded shape, and told her that as the lower layers grow out, the upper layers will as well, to maintain the shape.

Ahhhh just in time!!!! The left side of my head curls more than my right side so NOW the left side of my layers look about 1-2” shorter when dry 😂. Also the unicorn cut I did way back when has left the ends of my hair scraggly and thin so I did have to cut quite a bit of the mullet length off. The only good part about all of this is since I have been transitioning for over a year and a half almost all of my previous damage is GONE. @@brooklynsbaby4367 oh dear, not those dreadful thinning shears!! I had my hair completely ruined when I was in middle school, when a hair stylist used those in me “because my hate was too thick and unmanageable”. All the thinning shears did was give me MORE extreme frizz and unmanageability on a daily styling level, because my hair was a million different lengths, and I would just stare in the mirror crying. There were no styling products 40 years ago to help tame that mess! I did not know any better back then. I’m in my 50’s now, and if a stylist were to whip out thinning shears in the middle of a cut, or even suggest that they need to use them, I’m HIGH TAILING it out of there asap! I don’t care if my hair is half cut, sopping wet as I sit in the chair, that’s a RED FLAG for me, that the stylist is clueless as to how to handle thick, curly hair. A few years ago a stylist suggested using thinning shears on my son’s hair and thank goodness I was there, and said NOOOOOOO! Lol. He’s 20 yo now, and to this day, I tell him, to pay attention, if you see a stylist take thinning shears out, and I showed him a pic, speak up and say you do NOT want those used on your hair. Those thinning shears should be outlawed, I swear!

Honestly, thank you for doing this haircut and letting it grow out a bit, showing us how it ends up!! It helps me understand what I may or may not want from a cut, which is helpful for either trying to cut myself, or when I take a pic to a stylist.
Prior to this video, I thought I _didn't_ want too rounded, but seeing the alternative, it actually looks _more_ "round" in the way I _don't_ want my hair to look. So maybe "rounded" is a good word for what I'd like a little more of. I also now see the way that I do and don't want layers! I thought a butterfly would give more of the layers that I thought I wanted on the back - not fewer!!
(story time. Once I took a pic to a stylist and was like "like this, with few layers!" and she was like "... uhhh... well, first, the cut in this pic has a _ton_ of layers, so..." /_- I have no clue! Haircutting is a mystery to me! I just want it to look flattering on me! HELP! 😭🥲 )

take the notes!! Layering by cutting the hair HIGH is like chopping a tree, gradually cutting the shape up from the bottom is like building a house 📝

I really enjoyed learning from you and watching you and my concern is I do not have curly hair but when it’s wet it has a wave. Can I apply the same techniques to my straight hair? I really appreciate if you let me know. Thank you.

Love your content, it’s insightful, creative, entertaining and so helpful. I am on month 5 of my curly hair journey, live in Ottawa, Ontario and THE FRIZZ FACTOR has been an issue for me on day 3 post wash. Nothing I do helps this unless I wash my hair (I usually use a co-wash in between wash days). After watching your educational videos, I realized that it’s likely the glycerin and frigid weather that are wreaking havoc on my locks. I’ve purchased a lot of products since my journey has begun to see what works best in my hair and I’ve read the ingredients & all my stylers contain glycerin & they are usually at the beginning of the list. The finishing products I’ve been using don’t, at least based on the glycerin synonyms that I know of (there are sooo many). Being a fellow Canadian who is geographically close and has to deal with this weather, which stylers & finishing products would you recommend that has little to no glycerin that are budget friendly?

Oh my goodness. I am definitely not that confident, but I will do small haircuts and trims. I love that fullness and movement. 🥰
I was wondering if you had seen or heard any of the claims against olaplex? Some people are saying that it's making them lose their hair, similar to what was happening with Devacurl. I'm curious what your thoughts are.

I need tips on how to cure headaches. I love my hair long. I forgot how painful it is to let it grow out. Even with it thinned. I have done 2 buns, 1 bun, low buns etc. Braids hurt too 😫

Ah! Thanks so much for this. I needed a trim but have had trouble finding someone who can do a round shape on my wavy hair. I'm also growing it out from being super short, so I didn't want someone to take much length off, either. I watched this a bunch of times and then followed the steps myself. It turned out great! Just gave the curls a lift and fixed the shape. Thanks for much for all your wonderful videos.

I have very curly thin hair and have rarely had a stylist who could cut it right. They all wet it down and cut it like it is straight. I end up with poodle ears and thin bottoms. I really would like to thank you for all your help because I just can't trust a stylist anymore. Excuses. It dulls my scissors or it comes out the same.

Oh i wish my hair was healthy as much as yours. Yours grows so fast also. No way that i can chop that much just after 2 months. Also the first hair cut doesnt looks bad to me either. When you have healthy growing hair any haircut looks good.

Long time viewer and first time commenter. Like others here, just wondering: where does this leave the pigtail haircut?? LOL Looking forward to your answer on that.

Hi would it be possible to get a haircut video for thick/dense “type 4” or coarse hair? I’m hair challenged lol so most of the time it’s kind of hard to figure out the sectioning to accommodate how much hair I have. 😩Hope that makes sense. 😊

  • @desireeadrian5722
    @desireeadrian5722 Рік тому +1

    Hi Mell!
You always look so stunning! I loved watching this cut transition.
This is all so relatable, though I don’t have nearly as much density as your lovely hair.
I truly appreciate the end where you found some rando pieces that needed to be adjusted. 😂 I just did a trim and am going through refining a little each day, as they curls settle back in.
Would you be able to elaborate/demonstrate how to approach preserving the ear section and front sections for those with lower density, please? I use the tutorials you did for Amanda’s face framing layers. My ear area and front sections around my face are so thin/fine and wispy. I too have that one curl that is in the front and center that is the bane of my existence… but she’s so delicate. 😅

I wish there was a way to share pics bc ive had FOUR bad hair cuts from "professionals"
A DIY butterfly helps me skip pro cuts. My girl is currently out on vacay. But ive also done better than pros before. Also, for reference im a barely wavy girl. I just watch bc i love mel. Curly girls plz dont come for me lol
