I used this video to guide myself in cutting my hair. I have NEVER cut my own hair before until TODAY. THANK YOU MELL!!!! My hair looks AMAZING and better than EVER BEFORE!!!! I have been trying to get my hair cut for almost 7 months now and keep having financial needs elsewhere. I kept putting my hair in the back burner. Now, THANKS TO YOU, I have the confidence, knowledge and Boss Babe attitude to handle my hair needs in the future!!!! Your AWESOME 🤩
I've followed you for a long time and after watching this video I finally got brave enough to cut my own hair. And OMG I think it might just be the best haircut I've EVER had!! You're such a great teacher and this was a great video. Thanks a million Mell!! 🙌🙌❤💕
For anyone wondering, you can totally do this cut with hair that starts out shorter than shoulder length! It’s just a lot more finicky and difficult to make sure you have grabbed everything. And it looks really good! Thanks Mell!
I was wondering! I kinda blunt chopped my hair off last night and it’s just above shoulder length, and without layers my thin/fine 2c hair looks kind of ridiculous haha. Thank you. :)
I have been on a curly journey to get my curls back after years of damage and not knowing how to care for them. I used to have hair like Amanda and I used the unicorn cut to gain confidence in cutting my hair at home. I had been slowly cutting more and more off and keeping up with trims at home, then I got to a point where I used your pig tail cut and absolutely loved it. I have used it as a guide for when I need a touch up although my ultimate goal was to cut it even shorter to keep getting rid of the damage and I’m ready for it! I have the same problem you described the back is super flat, you already know I will definitely be trying this out today! Thank you for helping me restore my curls! Much love to you and Amanda! 💕
This cut is so wonderful I share it all the time. I have curly wavy hair texture that frizzes and falls flat in the back 😢. This cut added volume depth and layers that really bounced my curls back!!! Thanks Mel ❤
I love the combo of not taking it too seriously, but also joking about the relatable things like "Hopefully I don't hate myself later." Watching you cut your hair with your professional experience makes it seem like a way lower stakes situation than it feels like as an amateur. This one was also interesting because it felt less like a step by step recipe, but a little more involved cut that looks like what it seems like pros do, with a little more freestyling, based on your knowledge about hair cutting. Super interesting to watch and pick up on those little things that hair stylists do that I never knew about. Thanks as always for the great tips, Mel!
Just tried it! Came out amazing 😍😍😍I love it. I had my mom help because I wasn’t too confident about using the guide to cut the rest of my hair. Literally looks like I went to the salon to get professional curly hair cut done! The directions were extremely clear and easy to follow.
I followed this tutorial because it was DEFINITELY time for my yearly fall chop. I get nervous going to salons and I just moved to a new city for college, so that wasn't an option. I LOVE my hair! The layers feel so light and airy and it will grow out great!
Mel! I’m so grateful for this tutorial. I just had a baby and experiencing major postpartum hair loss. I needed a haircut bad but can’t afford to go anywhere right now. This tutorial has given me great layers and now my hair isn’t weighed down. I don’t look like Gollum anymore 😂. Again thank you! I feel confident again and I saved over $100 which I can use towards diapers and baby wipes.
I just followed this for a second time. The first time, 4 moths ago, I was coming from a crooked place. Lol I had two areas where the layers looked like steps. The first cut only camouflaged the problem. This second time, it had grown enough to actually blend the layers in. This is the best haircut I've ever had... EVER. So much volume that actually stays!! That's saying a lot for my fine, low density hair. Thanks again, Mell!!
I've been cutting my hair by myself for the past year, with your helpful videos 🥰 I've had so many terrible haircuts, I only trust myself now. 😅 That says a lot for curly hair knowledge in the hair community. Love your videos Mel 💖
I don't think ANY hairdresser I've been to has cut my hair taking into consideration the side I part it which I think explains why I feel like one side is fuller than the other and super flat on the back! God, a good haircut really does make a difference, right?! I just find out I never had a good one! lol
I've tried the pigtails cut and it was amazing. This is going to be the next one I try! Thank you for sharing this technique, greetings from Argentina!
I just tried this cut. I loved the results! 🎉I have extremely low density curly and thin hair. This added volume and a fresh look! Omg I feel confident and beautiful. Thank you Mel! I had my daughter helping me with the last part. 😅
JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VERY HELPFUL TUTORIAL. I FOLLOWED THESE STEPS AND MY DAUGHTERS HAIR CAME OUT BEAUTIFUL 😍 SHE IS A HAPPY LITTLE GIRL WITH HER NEW CUT KEEP MAKING THESE KIND OF VIDEOS YOU ARE THE BEST! 🙏♥️
As a long-term goal you should open a school (or join a school) to teach curly hair techniques. Very few hairdressers have the knowledge you have to work with curly hair and, while the videos are fantastic, I think a lot of students would benefit from having you there showing them in person. My daughter is planning to go to hairdressing school in the fall of 2023 and would love to be your student!
I'm not doing this myself, but I will ask my hairdresser (who went to school with you apparently) for it! Flat crown is something I've been having issues with. You look fab! Love the colour too.
Ive been contemplating for over 2 weeks if to cut my hair or not after months and months of not touching it and yesterday decided to just go for it. Ive cut it too short which is my fault obviously 😂 but i am genuinely not mad at it and im really happy its this short and it feels great! Absolutely love this video and i will definitely try it again next time! Thank you so much!! ❤
Omg, this was perfect! I have wavy hair, a mix of 2a, b, and c with my outermost layer being the loosest waves. I have been doing your pigtail cut for over a year and it made me happy every single time. Because my hair got longer, the pigtail cut could not give me short enough outer layers. I first tried your modified butterfly cut and it turned out alright. It gave me long layers and the outermost layer was short enough. But I have quite dense hair, and so I ended up with many choppy layers and stringy ends which prevented thick curl clump formation. It was voluminous but I lost curl definition. I just tried this universe cut+pigtail cut (together) this morning and it turned out so beautiful! I got many well-blended layers and my outermost layer is short enough to give that bouncy look. I got my thick, juicy curl clumps back. I am so happy. Thank you❤
@@kristincabeza-erikson4488i just saw this reply. Sorry for such a late response! I cut it on my own. I think it worked well due to the length of my hair. If you have shorter hair, some help will be needed :)
I had to learn to cut my own hair in 2017 when hubs was diagnosed. Cancer is expensive so, I cut corners however I could. Have been cutting, bleaching, coloring my own hair since and am about to redo it for my birthday in a week and a half (new year, new me sort of thing) and my hair needs a good cut SO badly. Unfortunately, I can’t call my mom, she’s 86 and in a home. No friends, no sisters and I don’t think I’m going to let my kids or hubby cut my hair, lol. It’s curly and starting to get long, am really hoping I don’t screw up my hair this time, lol!!! Wish me luck! And thank you for your videos!!! They are super helpful!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
yeeesss perfect timing, i’m gonna do this later today!! the free styling is definitely scary, did you say we can just do the back side pony, then use the pigtails haircut for the sides and back/perimeter and bangs? like just add that first pony placement and do the rest of the hair like the pigtails cut?
You got it!! That back pony is your guide, so cut those layers first, then take it down and create your pigtails with some of that hair so you know what length to cut! You got this 🤩
@@ManesByMell I'm a visual person, I wish you had done one side at least with the pig tail method to show us. Anyway I will try what I see first. Wish me luck
Hi Mell!!!! I followed this tutorial today and I have cut a friend of mine wavycurly hair, this was absolutely my first time (never done not even on me) and her hair turned out great!!!!!!!! More than any expectations, and she liked it a lot more than when she was going to the hairdresser!!!! She was never happy with any hairdresser. I enjoyed a lot, and following you that was easy! 🤩 I already follow your channel and consider you amazing, but I rarely leave a comment on older videos, since they are older 😁. But I really wanted to tell you, this time!!! Thank you ❤️ Love from Rome, Italy 🥰🥰🥰
I got a Modern pixie mullet. My curls are even more perky….totally go for it!! My nurse practitioner asked me today on video chat, if my hair was “real” (LOL she meant was it a perm apparently lol) I get so many compliments (not that I see a ton of ppl nowadays) I took a pic Miley’s pixie mullet her mum cut to hair stylists. Mullets are awesome!! Get the Amina mousse; i got some at salon it’s so epic.
This is my like fourth time using this video, I know it almost word for word now LOL. Finally had bangs grown out long enough for it to really look great this time, and I got more bold about cutting the back short and it looks soooo much better. Thank you!!
I just done this haircut (literally, just finished cutting and styling) and it looks sooo good 😍😍 my texture is generally 3A but can change depending on the technique and weather, so can be curlier or wavier. The layers that I got where impossible to achieve with the butterfly cut, plus now it's gonna be easy to style and faster to dry It was super easy to follow and funny because of your personality Mell ❤ the results are the same as the salon Thank you so much 🥰 This is gonna be my stable haircut for a really long time
I love your diy haircuts. I did your pigtail cut multiple times already. I would love to see one with lots of layers on top without cutting much from the length in the back.
Is your natural part a side part or did you move it to the side for this haircut? I really want to do this cut and my natural part is in the middle, but I love the side part.
I love how this cut looks. I totally want it. My hair is quite similar to yours, but I don't understand how you do this on your own!!!! How do you get such straight lines?!?! How do you grab just the right amount of hair on both sides!?!?! I can't even part a straight line with a rat tail comb 🤣🤣. Maybe my mom will be brave enough to help me with this diy. 🤞🏼🙏🏼
This is golden! You're so enjoyable to watch (and Seester!) I'd love a tutorial on a jaw length bob for curly hair. My hair is loving your suggestions! Thank you!
Hi Mel! I am so glad you part your hair on the side! I feel more confident that when I cut my own side-parted hair with your methods, it'll look right. I do have a good stylist, but she's learning to cut curly hair on me, so I try things in between cuts with her. She just cut my hair this evening (before I saw this video) and tried a technique she learned recently, so after a couple of washes, I'll see how it curls. Otherwise, I'll be showing her this video! Can you show how your hair looks in the back now? You swished your hair when you showed the back in the video, so I didn't get to see the lovely layers properly. This style definitely looks good on you!
Thank you for doing this video! I cut my long hair (I cut a foot of hair off, I had it extremely long my whole life) two years ago into a short bob where it’s long in the front and short in the back. I’ve been maintaining it (I haven’t been to hair salon in over 15 years) but it’s missing layers! I’m good enough to bleach, color, and cut, but I can’t cut layers, as I’m an engineer and not a hairstylist! You just solved my two year long problem!! Thank you!!!!
Thanks j ai suivi ton tutorial et ca a marche , je suis contente avec les résultat, on a besoin des experts comme toi, ce n est pas facile avoir un bon coupe des cheveux avec les coiffeurs.
This is how I do my hair 🎉 Mel you look AMAZING! So glad to see a shorter style!! Not sure why in the US it seems to be longer the better but it can often look heavy and dated. This length is so fresh and healthy xx💞🎀😘🎉🎉🎉
Thanks Mell. I have been trying to grow my hair because a hair dresser who I had cut it did not understand curly hair. I love this style and can not wait. I will pre cut to try and cut it as it grows. Thanks again.
Hi Mell!!! I've been following you for years now!! Been cutting my hair with a previous tutorial...I made the bad choice to go to the hairdresser...Thank you for this new tutorial!!! Love my hair again!!! All my 💕 to you!!! Veronica, from Argentina!
I love your hair my 11 year old has hair like yours really long i had no idea what To do until i came across one of your vids now im watching every moment i can. Woke up extra early (4am) because my baby is doing her continuation today and she wants a shorter hair cut. THIS IS IT!!! We will share photos. Thank you Mel.! Also, i love your sense of humor, making us laugh is always a blessing.
I have watched a dillion tutorials and this is by far the best for the way that I process information. I just cut my hair and also took a bunch off of the perimeter. I feel like this is structured just right. Thank you !
This is the length/ style i like best on you Mel!❤Girl you know how many stylists messed up my hair? Simple layers just didnt work. Had to fix it myself. Luckily i have haircutting experience but it shouldn't be so hard to get a basic hair cut.
Thank you Mel! I spent over $200 on a haircut I didn't like. I'm nervous to try this but I'm going to watch a few times to fully understand the method.
Hi Mell! This is brilliant! Question - if I only want to add more layers in the back, would it work to do the first step of this cut and then do a pigtails cut for the rest?
I tried this today!! Not gonna lie it was worrying as I cut quite a lot off and I also trimmed the back of my hair myself using a ponytail as I didn't watch the whole video first 🙈😅 My hair has been shedding for a while and was thin at the ends so it made sense that a shorter bob would look better and now that it's dry and fluffed up it looks great as it has more volume in all the right places! I haven't even been able to find a hair salon in thirty years that could cut it as nice as this (but that's the UK for you! 🙄). Thanks Mell! 😜💕
Mel... MEL!!! This is exactly what I needed. Like, were you in my mirror while I was complaining to myself about needing a new cut?! This is exactly what I want!!
I rarely CUT my hair, but I trim my hair when it's needed. Now like two days after I take the plunge and actually cut it you upload a hair cut vid! Ahhh! I used the pigtail one so we are good. Can't wait to try this next time! 👍🏻👍🏻
"DIY plus call your mom or your seestar" 🤣🤣🤣. You guys are the best. I admire your bravery for cutting your own hair at home. It looks amazing!!! I prefer my curly hair in a chin length bob. My curls just live their best life at this length. When I have it long I too suffer from a flat crown plus I also have a small face and it just drowns in my thick curly hair when it's long.
I am one of the lucky who had a curly cut from YOU just before you transitioned into your present full time career as an influencer. BTW best cut and colour ever! I love watching your content. I tried this cut and it turned out pretty good. It’s time for a trim, so glad this came up on my feed. Also I’m looking for merchandise. I had your Tshirt with Big hair…that got ruined. My curly haired Granddaughter was 😢. Are you still selling T-shirts.
Wow you look amazing. To chicken 🐔 to do this myself. I can't cut straight for my life. To have hubby do it will be worse. I love all your hair styles . Always a joy to watch you and Amanda. Can't wait to see her haircut. Love you guys. 😍
Oooh…that would be a great TT topic. Talking about products that are good for GREY hair curls. There’s a lot of folk who go grey in their younger years.
@@ManesByMell you cut my hair back in 2019 and it was above the shoulders and I really wanna go back to a similar style, I just don't think I can trust anybody else to cut it well! I think I will try this, I've followed your other diy hair cut videos and so far it's been great!

Thank you❤
ohh! How did you achieve the back part for evening. Did someone help you or you got it on your own?
Yessss!!! Omgggg I’m definitely doing this as soon as my broken collarbone heals enough to allow me full mobility lol
yeeesss perfect timing, i’m gonna do this later today!! the free styling is definitely scary, did you say we can just do the back side pony, then use the pigtails haircut for the sides and back/perimeter and bangs? like just add that first pony placement and do the rest of the hair like the pigtails cut?
You got it!! That back pony is your guide, so cut those layers first, then take it down and create your pigtails with some of that hair so you know what length to cut! You got this 🤩
@@ManesByMell I'm a visual person, I wish you had done one side at least with the pig tail method to show us. Anyway I will try what I see first. Wish me luck
@@Sahar-style Do you mind sharing how it turned out for you using this multi-pony method?
I was literally sitting here like dang I need a hair cut. I’ve tried the pigtails cut and love it for a simple haircut!! I’m so excited to try this!
I already follow your channel and consider you amazing, but I rarely leave a comment on older videos, since they are older 😁. But I really wanted to tell you, this time!!! Thank you ❤️
Love from Rome, Italy 🥰🥰🥰
thanks for this DIY plus call your mom tutorial. I love this style and have always cut my hair myself to look like this and found this so helpful!
I’m so glad you think so!!
Yes! I'm getting a bob on the 23rd! Not by myself because I have been cutting my own hair for 2 years and I'm getting a mullet feel. Can't wait!
I have been so tempted to cut my hair lately but I've never done it myself so I was worried I'd mess up. But seeing your beautiful curls...
I don’t think I’ll ever get over your hair. So beautiful. 🥹💕
This video has been around for a year??? How did I miss it?? Exactly what I've been needing!! Wonderful! Thank you, Mell!!
The layers that I got where impossible to achieve with the butterfly cut, plus now it's gonna be easy to style and faster to dry
It was super easy to follow and funny because of your personality Mell ❤ the results are the same as the salon
Thank you so much 🥰 This is gonna be my stable haircut for a really long time
I've done this cut on myself twice now; hands down the best dyi cut 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I love your diy haircuts. I did your pigtail cut multiple times already. I would love to see one with lots of layers on top without cutting much from the length in the back.
YESSS! That’s what I’m looking for. I want more volume but without losing length
The modified butterfly cut video she did might work for that
I so glad I found you. I've tried for years many hairstyles and haircut tutorials but nothing works. But now I feel amazing!!
Totally gonna try this. I was trying to accomplish this style when I used the pigtail haircut, so this will be even better!
I cut my hair and it came out GREAT!!! Thanks Mel... you are my Mane Girl!♡
Is your natural part a side part or did you move it to the side for this haircut? I really want to do this cut and my natural part is in the middle, but I love the side part.
I let my teenager follow along and cut my hair. Loved the results!! Thank you son much.
DIY plus your mom or sister lol
This is golden! You're so enjoyable to watch (and Seester!) I'd love a tutorial on a jaw length bob for curly hair. My hair is loving your suggestions! Thank you!
❤️❤️❤️
You are so hilarious and educated on the professional cutting ❤
"I'm screaming. I'm crying. I'm throwing up." 🤣❤ I know the EXACT feeling
I do not have the balls to ever do this put as usual it looks amazing on you Mell! Great job! Love this length on you!
This haircut is amazing! It is so doable and dare I say easy to follow that my husband was able to follow it and cut my hair! Love love love
Im so happy to hear that ♥️♥️♥️ glad I could help xoxo
This couldn’t come at a more perfect time for me!! I need a hair cut and not just any haircut… the Universe Haircut! Excited to do this!
This is how I do my hair 🎉 Mel you look AMAZING! So glad to see a shorter style!!
Not sure why in the US it seems to be longer the better but it can often look heavy and dated. This length is so fresh and healthy xx💞🎀😘🎉🎉🎉
This looks amazing. Hoping you’ll are going to share Amanda’s new hair cut.
Thanks Mell. I have been trying to grow my hair because a hair dresser who I had cut it did not understand curly hair. I love this style and can not wait. I will pre cut to try and cut it as it grows. Thanks again.
My beautiful curly queen helping her fellow curly queens, ty love bug
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Also, i love your sense of humor, making us laugh is always a blessing.
love your results, i'm certain i will watch this 100 times and still be terrified to cut my hair.
girl you literally read my mind with this one
Omgggggg a bob is you... The way you style your hair and flat ish, the bob creates Morrrreeee body ❤ ❤....yessssa Mel...this is ittttttt!!!!
I have watched a dillion tutorials and this is by far the best for the way that I process information. I just cut my hair and also took a bunch off of the perimeter. I feel like this is structured just right. Thank you !
That's great.
What if you have bangs above your eyebrows?
This is the video I have been wanting for for about a month now! I was literally about to request a curly bob haircut the other day 🙌
Mell be hairstylist, content creators, educator and a mind reader 😂
I absolutely love this length!! it looks great!!
This is the length/ style i like best on you Mel!❤Girl you know how many stylists messed up my hair? Simple layers just didnt work. Had to fix it myself. Luckily i have haircutting experience but it shouldn't be so hard to get a basic hair cut.
Mel! This hair color! This hair color! It is YOU!!! Keep glowing sis ❤️
Great job. You rock the bob. Shorter but you still have a lot of beautiful curls.
I love it! You look great Mell!! I’ve been wanting shorter layers in the back but was too scared to do it.
You look amazing! Totally popping, and love the longer inverted bob. Thanks for the layering tips.
My favorite haircut 😍 I currently have had this cut for years now. Long hair gives me a headache
So happy you're doing this again! I was just complaining about my flat crown, Thanks. I am trying this!
ok but your bloopers are giving RAVEN BAXTER BABYYY
MY CHILDHOOD QUEEN
I mean, the haircut, the color, the green top, everything is just fabulous !!! LOVE love loooove it!!!!!!!
Your bloopers are the best! 😅 that's what I look forward the most honestly.
Same 😂❤️
Oo yes im growing my hair out from ear length to elbow im mid rn on shoulders and the back is getting flat this was needed 😫❤️🙏🏽
Mel said “DIY and call your mom, what do you want?” I’m cracking up 🤣🤣
I was rolling 🤣
Mel... MEL!!! This is exactly what I needed. Like, were you in my mirror while I was complaining to myself about needing a new cut?! This is exactly what I want!!
I'm hoping this will give my low density hair some umph!
YES! Please share your results with me on IG, I can’t wait to see!!😍
This looks fabulous!! Curls look so great
I did this hair cut yesterday and I in love with it!!! So much fun and fresh!!! Thank you!!!
I cut my daughters curls. It came out beautiful. Thank you for your video.
I almost cut my hair today but ran out of time. This video is perfectly timed! 🥰
Happy Texture Tuesday!! Your hair looks amazing! Can't wait to watch, sweets are ready 😂❤️
You look fabulous with the new hair cut!😍😍😍😍 💛💛💛💛💛💛💛
Here’s a new technique I can use when it’s time to cut my hair again! Your hair looks gorgeous!
Can you please do recommendations for dry grey hair, good products to keep hair soft and stop it going yellow, pretty please ☺️
First, a chelating shampoo, second, a purple shampoo, and third, a great leave-in conditioner 🤩
Oooh…that would be a great TT topic. Talking about products that are good for GREY hair curls. There’s a lot of folk who go grey in their younger years.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED
My 6 year old daughter says you look beautiful! I may have to try this cut. I keep debating on leaving it long or cutting it shorter. I can't decide!
Not to bring up trends but there’s been a lot of chopping going on! Decide if you need a change or not 😊 you can always trim and cut more later!
@@ManesByMell you cut my hair back in 2019 and it was above the shoulders and I really wanna go back to a similar style, I just don't think I can trust anybody else to cut it well! I think I will try this, I've followed your other diy hair cut videos and so far it's been great!
Fantastic , unique-methods to your madness 💇🏼♀️💜
