Just cut my hair with this tutorial again! I’ve used this one countless times for mine and my curly daughters hair. Couldn’t even tell you how many times I’ve had my hair completely messed up by a stylist over the years. Often by many self proclaimed “curly hair specialist” … 😩 I know we’ve all been there! Thanks so,so much for this tutorial! Turns out wonderful each time. 💕
Ain’t it the truth? Just happened to me because I recently moved. I cried in the shower because the first cut was awful so I gave the stylist a second chance to fix it and she made it worse 😢 9 months growing out my long beautiful mane and it was ruined in minutes. Was going to try out another stylist and got cold feet. I’ve just been bunning and braiding it. I can’t wait to try this cut! Thank you @Mell ❤
@@radiateyoga oh no, Im so sorry that happened to you! I ended up getting my hair cut very short by a professional stylist. While I did want the haircut and it turned out pretty good I am growing it out again, haha. I hope you have good luck with this haircut! The only part I ever had an issue with is trimming the ends at the end. The part where you turn your head to the side to make sure you don’t have a v shape. That’s the only part you have to be more precise and careful with as it can turn out kinda wonky if you’re not. I would say cut very little off the ends when doing that part when you first go in. Then check the back and make sure it looks okay. Then cut more off if you want. Never had any issues with the rest of the cut. I’ll prob be trying out some of Mel’s other short haircuts until my hair is long enough to do this one again. Good luck! I hope it turns out great!
Ug 🙃Me too! They'll say "Yes. I can do curly hair" I'm 60 & have been to a stylist 4times 😄 Trained myself young but grateful to have found Mell today so MAYBE I will stop cutting toooo much🙄
Just contacted the only curly hair specialist I could find near me. Sent pics of hair as per request, along with hair type, length, texture, etc. Starting price for a curly hair cut is 400 DOLLARS!!!!!! So YEAH I will be cutting my hair at home...🙃
I'm also tired of getting curly haircuts because not only are they so expensive, but also you still get a much shorter haircut than you even wanted in the first place. 😭 I also never like how they even style my hair, all the upside down drying and the products they use to make it more voluminous which doesn't last and it's not a good look on me.
THANK YOU MELL!! I was trying to decide between the pigtail cut and the unicorn cut and ultimately decided on the unicorn because I have REALLY long curly hair more similar to Amanda's than yours (I'm 2c,3a,3b). I just cut it yesterday and am IN LOVE. I hadn't cut my hair in SIX years because I had such a bad haircut last time I went to the salon. Let me tell you, my hair was needing this so badly; after six years my ends were looking ROUGH. I could tell the bounce was back immediately, and I saved myself the $100+ that my hairdresser would have charged me. Thank you so much Mell, I am in love with my hair again, and it's all thanks to you!
Just did this cut tonight and WOW I am so happy with the results! I’ve never asked for the face framing/bangs before because I was too nervous but now I have them and I LOVE THEM!!! This was so doable and so worth it. Thank you Mell!! 💕
I watched this video 4 times over the last few days. Decided to do it today. Holy DANG my hair looks so good! I haven't had a "real" cut in almost 2 years now, so I'm ridiculously jazzed at how nice and tidy it all looks again. Thank you Mel and Amanda! I know this is a year late, but here we are.
So I tried trimming my curly hair last night. Must say I’m pretty happy with it. You and seester gave great instructions!! I haven’t cut my hair for over two years cause I can’t find anyone that understands curly hair can’t be “just” cut like straight hair and after they cut it they immediately want to straighten it!! Thanks you ladies!!❤️
Mell, for all the months I've been watching your videos, my hair routine has improved IMMENSELY and so has the state of my hair. I have you to thank girl 😘 Thanks for everything!!
It's the same for me! Really wish I had some before and after photos. I started watching Mell in February and since then, curls have improved, even the locks that had forgotten how to curl. AND my hair density has improved. I had low to medium density, now it just slightly more than medium density. Thank you, thank you to Mell!!
This tutorial has been a lifesaver. I’ve been cutting my curly hair for a year and a half now. I’ve gotten faster and more accurate each time and I’ve saved so much money. I’m on a tight budget and I wear a hard hat and bandana at my job anyway. I really don’t get out much (trying to get out of debt), so cutting my own hair works best for me. I revisit this video every time just to make sure I get it right. Thank you, Mell!!! ❤
Not only are you two seesters the cutest, but I love seeing Mel trying not to take over! I watched the whole video twice and then brought it into the bathroom with me so I could follow step-by-step and trimmed my own hair for the first time! Thank you Mel and Amanda for your amazing videos! My curly hair has come such a long way thanks to you both! 🎉
This is an AMAZING tutorial! My hair is less curly & thick than Amanda's (2a/b curls) but about the same length, and the cut turned out really well - I was actually shocked by how on point the layers are! Very easy & fast, and the details about what each step accomplished gave me the confidence to trust what I was doing. Honestly one of my favourite haircuts I've had, thanks Mel ☺️
I know this is an older video, but thank you so much for this. My hair journey has been a mess, but I've been doing my own cuts using variations of the ponytail method for about 6 years. The more rounded edge this gives installed of the sharp V with excessive layers I was getting before is awesome and much better for reaching my length goals. I also love that I was able to use this on my daughter's shoulder length hair (just the pigtails, not even the bangs portion) & now that it's drying, it looks perfect! We both have 2B/2C wavy hair and poor luck in the salons. Thank you so much!
I did this cut and it turned out great! Who knew I could cut my hair better than a professional can. I've had so many bad experiences with hair salons and cutting my hair. Thanks Mel!
2 years after you uploaded this I finally tried it. My hair had gotten soooo long and was so scraggly and weighed down with no volume up top. I was really nervous but this video was clear enough and I so appreciate that you did it in real time with what looked like no rehearsal so I could see how someone who had never cut hair would do. My hair cutting scissors are not the best so the ends might be slightly uneven but probably only noticable to a hair specialist such as yourself. The length is great, the layers came out great and my hair got its bounce back! So appreciative to both of you for sharing this!
I needed this. I have gone to 5 different stylist claiming they can cut curly hair and all have totally failed. One tried to straighten. One didn’t even style my hair because I told them I didn’t want heat other than a diffuser. Another made me diffuse my hair and they used no product etc I’m so done with trying to go see anyone. After watching these videos I definitely expect better than a normal cut and style.
Hi Mel. I doubt you’ll even see that, but I’m so grateful, that I just had to try. I am so thankful to you for making this video! My hairstylist, who has cut my hair for over 20 years, has had to retire for health reasons. The thought of trusting someone new with my hair was overwhelming! And I needed a cut so badly. After finding this video, I felt prepared to cut it myself, and I’m so happy with the result!! I feel so relieved that I could cry! Thank you! Thank you for taking the time to make this video!!
Just tried this today...WOW!!!! This is literally the first time I've had/done any kind of cut since starting to wear my hair curly last year and I CANNOT believe how well it turned out!! Getting the bangs section sorted out was (for whatever reason) a bit of a challenge, but after that it was all good (thanks to your awesome direction)!!! Thank you Mell (and Amanda)! I've learned so much from you thus far but this tutorial by far was the best!!
It took me an hour but I did this haircut step by step and THANK YOU MEL!!!!!!!!!!!!! the 2nd best haircut I've ever gotten. My curls are lighter, more bounce, great shape! 👍 I am so happy I saved from paying $380 for my curly hair stylist (curly cut , deep condition, color) . Really can't afford that right now !
Amanda looked so offended when you told her she stank 😂😂😂 You did great Amanda! Thanks for sacrificing yourself for our education 😂 You're an awesome teacher Mell ❤ If I ever try to cut my own hair, I'll definitely use this video for instructions 👍👍👍
Same, right? I genuinely think about “well I’ve always wanted to visit America/New York so maybe while I’m there I could pop across the border and have an appointment” lol Just to add I’d love to visit Canada by itself too but I can see myself doing America first so it fits into that trip
I did this today and it was slightly terrifying but so necessary. Thank you Mell & Amanda for making this video - I would have never had the guts to do it alone! I made my husband watch the video twice (once before and once during) to act as a second set of eyes to make sure my technique was as described. I took off much more length, but so far I'm happy with my results and looking forward to lighter, bouncier curls (and no more headaches from all that heavy hair)!
you guys are a blessing. i probably wouldn’t be cutting my hair at home if it weren’t for the pandemic, but having these videos is incredible! i have learned so much about my hair thanks to y’all, and feel so confident about giving myself a ✨trim✨ at home
i got my hair cut (and a colour correction from my own bleach fail lol) by Mell about 2ish years ago and it completely changed my life! she taught me how to style it to showcase my waves/curls and i get compliments on my hair so often now- before i honestly thought it was just a frizzy mess because i damaged it so much but now i can literally wash and basically go. i’m going to try to do this hair cut now since it’s been a while! thank u! 💕
I did it! My hair was a very similar length to Amanda so I saw this and I thought, it's time... I have been cutting my own hair for about a decade but my texture hides bad haircuts easily so I never learned how to do it well. This method was so easy and it gave me a fantastic shape with lots of versatility just as promised! Thank you Mell!
Your sister literally had the same hair as me! It’s really assuring to see her get help from a professional like you. Growing up with curly hair has been hard. Every time I walk into a neighborhood salon, I’ve always been given a deathly eye glare or chased out. It’s insane. I’ve only found one person who can cut my hair without getting scissor happy.
I did it! I watched your about 10 times and practiced the comb placement about 20 (you mess up your curly bangs, you’re crying for months) but it worked! Thank you so much for this quick and efficient cut. 🥰
I was overdue for a cut when the world shut down. My hair was getting out of control. I cut it today closely following these pointers. I have to say, I'm not even a little bit mad at it!!! I kinda love it to be honest!! Thanks Mel!!
Extremely satisfied. I did it to myself last weekend with wet hair and styled it. I checked it in all possible angles over the week, even after refreshing mid-week (I do not have uniform definition as I have not maintained a curl-friendly routine for almost a half-year now). Today, I washed, deep-conditioned and styled, finally finished the cut I started by editing the wayward curls when fully dried. AMAZING results! I am totally mind-blown and I would rather do this trim to myself every year than visit a salon.
i highly suggest. i had a similar shape from a somewhat botched self haircut, and it turned out great. my only suggestion is to take your time though since it took me like 40 minutes to cut off half a handful of hair clippings haha
I’ve never had layers cut in my hair! I’ve only started taking care of my curls recently since nobody else in my family has curly hair. I really want to try this on my next wash hehe Also may I just say... You and Mell have been so helpful in getting my hair to a healthy place!! I love both of yalls videos so much!! Thank you 💕💕
Ok so, I haven’t had my haircut in over a year because of the rona. I’m even grooming my own dog. Soooo I just couldn’t take it anymore and HAD to cut my hair. All the shape was gone. And anyone with curly hair and layers knows you need that shape and the layers. I’m 40 and have never cut my hair and am very particular about the way it looks. When I came across this tutorial and various others on this channel I felt empowered to take the matter into my own hands. The instruction is PERFECT! I did it and it turned out so well! THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting these instructional videos. Wow what a great teacher!
I tried this out today and it turned out much better than when I did the unicorn cut previously. The face-framing layers made all the difference. Thanks!
OMG. you have saved my life. 47 years old and now i finally know how to care for my fine porous curly hair. i just cut my hair myself for the first time because of this video and it looks bomb! will be tagging y'all in my IG for sure.
I have the same curl type and length as Mel's sister. I tried this technique and honestly it's AMAZING. It turned out great! Thank You SO MUCH Mel, definitely will be using this from now on ❤
Just cut my hair!!!! I had to get all the Deva damage off because it was breaking off by itself. I Couldn’t have done it without you both. Thank you!!!!! 💜💜💜💜💝
Thank you for putting a scissor recommendation in the description box. Ironically, this is the same pair I’d added to my Amazon wish list based on reading its reviews. 💜👍🏻👏🏻
Thank you thank you thank you for this video!! I have curly hair and the other tutorials for layers did not factor in curly hair. I used this method and now my hair is perfect!!! My curls are back!!! You are awsome!!
As a stylist I relate to Mel when she panics about her shears. Those buggers are pricey and sharp! Loved the video. Even another professional was able to learn something! ♥️
This is amazing! I actually tried this video last year and just loved the outcome. I’ve gotten many compliments! It’s time to revisit it once again for my annual trim. Since I was so satisfied with my layered curly hair, I am looking forward to another go at it. It was actually the best curly cut I’ve ever had! I have recommend this video to others who have had fabulous results as well! You two sisters are simply adorable together and did a great job! Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial! Its easy and very doable for many of us who are not too comfortable trimming our curly hair at home. ❤️✂️👍
Mell Thanks to you I’ve decided to embrace my wavy curly hair and stop straightening. You not only teach how to properly care for curls but to love ourselves and be proud of whatever hair type we have. Thank you!
I just followed this tutorial yesterday. I really took my time with it, and I really REALLY loved how it turned out. My waves/curls really reacted positively to the layers too. I'm sure it's not a perfect job, but I honestly liked it better than my last few salon visits. Hopefully I can replicate it next time :) Thanks, Mell!
Thank you! I did this cut on my hair, following step by step, and it was great! The curls are so much happier now & it got rid of the severe V shape. I love it💫
OMG I did it, and it looks fabulous! I have fine curly dyed blonde hair and the layers in the front look beautiful. My little curls just sprung to life again and my hair looks so healthy. I haven't cut or colored my hair since January, so I really needed this. Thank you Mel💗👍

I love this, thank you so much. I am 62 and my whole life my hair had just a small wave. The past 4 years it has gotten more curl. Most women my age have to get perms. My hair is more like Amanda's. I am going to do this today!! Thank you Mell, I love watching you!
Seriously, I haven’t seen any of your other videos and I relied on instinct that the cut your sister did would work for me. lol. I don’t think anyone has cut my hair better! lol. I will certainly check out more of your stuff. Thanks again!!
This brought me so much joy! Thank you both for making this tutorial. Mell, you reminded me of my older sister. You two are hilarious. I loved this. I was so entertained and engaged and now I am ready to cut my curly hair. Thanks for sharing! #Sisters
I came to say thank you. My hair is curly, but after several years of an autoimmune desease my hair has been falling a lot for years, it's baby thin and sadly for me ALL hair technicians have either made fun of the fact I have little hair or have made lots of comments about it, even my brother, who is also a technician... 😭 so I have avoided haircuts for the past two years just because I don't want to go through that all over again. Your tutorial gave me back something I believe I had lost. Thank you! It looks amazing now.
I just want to say that I have long curly hair and have watched TONS of tutorials on this This is one of my favorites!! Very good! You guys have gorgeous hair! Thanks for the tips!
Just sorta followed your video. As I had straightened my hair. I actually feel accomplished Mel. SO THANK YOU. 56 years of depending on others. I CUT 3 inches easy . 😊😉
This is one of the most helpful videos on cutting long hair in layers. My hair is long and it's all even and I've been wanting layers to frame my small face. I've been sceptical about the regular unicorn cut and this video really helped me out. Definitely gonna try this!! Thank you, Mell and Amanda!!!!
OMG I was so anxious watching. I got “scissors happy” couple months ago and it was a disaster. But watching this cut was great. Thank you for doing it, I wish I could give you 100 thumbs up Edit: just did this cut, wasn’t as difficult as I thought. I cut less than an inch, but this will be my go-to haircut from now on. As I read in a comment, a Mell-icorn 😄
Mell! Thank you so much for this tutorial. Amanda! Thank you for volunteering. I just cut my own hair for the first time and I’m in love with it ❤️ my own texture is much like Amanda’s, just a bit more relaxed, so this was a great learning tool.
I already gave myself a trim last week, buuut I still watched this the whole way through because I love you ladies! You always make me chuckle 🤭 I felt Mell's pain...when you are the pro at something and you're trying to be patient and teach/coach someone else through a skill/task.. and you wanna jump in and help them so badly but you just gotta let that baby bird fly on its own!! 😅 "You won't learn unless you make some mistakes, so..." 😬

Even though the salons have opened up I'm still gonna try this coz I'm fed up of paying to be disappointed!
I feel you, me too, that's why I'm watching this video 😂
Mell should do "Curly Seminars" and teach us how to do this live, i would pay soooo much for that
I second that 🙋♀️
Ti Snyder yesss
Amen
I have already tried the unicorn haircut and I’ve liked my results. Now this is going to take it to a whole other level 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Abigail R Matambo haha same here ! So many ways to cut curly hair I love it !!!
Cut my hair again using this tutorial. Most detailed one I have even seen. As always, Mell never disappoints. We love you beautiful seesters 🥰🤤💜🤗🎀🌼🦄
Amanda looked so offended when you told her she stank 😂😂😂
You did great Amanda! Thanks for sacrificing yourself for our education 😂
You're an awesome teacher Mell ❤
If I ever try to cut my own hair, I'll definitely use this video for instructions 👍👍👍
Smarticle little bean might just be my new favorite compliment! 🥰
I would die to have Mell cut and style my hair!
Same!!! She is legendary with textured hair knowledge
Same, right? I genuinely think about “well I’ve always wanted to visit America/New York so maybe while I’m there I could pop across the border and have an appointment” lol
Just to add I’d love to visit Canada by itself too but I can see myself doing America first so it fits into that trip
She’s absolutely amazing. I got my hair cut and styled by her last year. Exceptional.
The only time I’ve left a salon satisfied!
Where is her salon located? I love Amandas hair color!
same after my fucking mother ruined my fucking hair
I have never cut my own hair, but I just tried this on my own and it was such a huge success!! Thanks Mel and Amanda!!
Love that yay!! 😍 you are so welcome!
I did it and had SO MUCH FUN! And my cut is bomb. Thank you. Also both of y’all’s personalities are so enjoyable!!!
I was overdue for a cut when the world shut down. My hair was getting out of control. I cut it today closely following these pointers. I have to say, I'm not even a little bit mad at it!!! I kinda love it to be honest!! Thanks Mel!!
This is the best curly haircut tutorial I've ever seen. I'll never pay for another cut again. Thank you so much!!!!!!!
This is GOLD for us quarantined begginers, graaaacias 💛
Extremely satisfied. I did it to myself last weekend with wet hair and styled it. I checked it in all possible angles over the week, even after refreshing mid-week (I do not have uniform definition as I have not maintained a curl-friendly routine for almost a half-year now). Today, I washed, deep-conditioned and styled, finally finished the cut I started by editing the wayward curls when fully dried. AMAZING results! I am totally mind-blown and I would rather do this trim to myself every year than visit a salon.
This is so helpful ladies!
I have the same shape as Amanda and I’m way overdue for a trim. Itching to do it myself lol
Gena M same ,going to watch this a thousand times first 😅
i highly suggest. i had a similar shape from a somewhat botched self haircut, and it turned out great. my only suggestion is to take your time though since it took me like 40 minutes to cut off half a handful of hair clippings haha
I’ve never had layers cut in my hair! I’ve only started taking care of my curls recently since nobody else in my family has curly hair. I really want to try this on my next wash hehe
Also may I just say... You and Mell have been so helpful in getting my hair to a healthy place!! I love both of yalls videos so much!! Thank you 💕💕
Curly gurus supporting curly gurus. Love it!
Any updates? How did it turn out?
Just used this tutorial to cut my hair myself for the first time ever. It turned out even better than I thought it could. Thank you for posting this!
I have the same curl type and length as Mel's sister. I tried this technique and honestly it's AMAZING. It turned out great! Thank You SO MUCH Mel, definitely will be using this from now on ❤
I did the “unicorn cut” a couple weeks ago and I’m going to go in more refined with this way!! LOVE IT.
Me too! Looks awesome!
OK, I tried this on my own mop a week ago, took 5 inches off the length and added layers and... Fire. Perfect. Had to come back to say THANK YOU! ❤️
I love this, her hair is so beautiful! Could you possibly show how to cut short/chin length wavy/curly hair?
Hiy my hair is short and curly and I cut as they show in the video.
And I'm in love with the final resulte.
Eeeek! I did this haircut on myself this morning! I absolutely LOVE it.
Lets see before and after!
6:57 the best part. I've watched this video multiple times in prep for doing my own today. Thank you both
How did you know I've been googling "cut my own curly hair" all day?!
Edit: OMG I watched that same exact video 1:08 just a few minutes before you posted this one!! Ok, lemme shut up and watch...
I KNOW !! A few months ago I did that unicorn cut and.. my hair is well.. Odd..
If my boyfriend followed this video ua-cam.com/video/1azr3Iqc5Qs/v-deo.html
Zenia Carreon i did the unicorn haircut and it turned out ok. not the greatest but certainly not bad.
So did I lol
Could you two be any more adorable? I seriously doubt it!
I LOVE seesters videos. This is my new favorite 🥰
Getting my fingers into the sceessors properly will be the challenge, but I’m gonna DO IT!
Thanks, Amanda (and Mell!)
This was awesome! I don't think I'm brave enough to do it myself, but I know others who will!!
Thank you Mell and Amanda!
Not only are you super talented...you're an excellent teacher as well. Great job!
I’ve been doing the unicorn cut on my hair for a few years now, I just gave myself one last week cause, ya know, quarantine. But I imma tweak it some more tonight with y’all’s technique! This is genius, good job girls!
I have been studying all your videos for weeks now & this video was exactly what I needed before I cut my own hair & I’m super happy to say that with your tips & tricks I LOVE how my hair turned out. Thank you again for all the videos you & your seester have been posting. Stay safe
I cannot fathom how hard this probably was for Mel haha watching anyone fumbling to do something you do all the time, and NOT stepping in! 😬
Honestly, it made me stronger. I was STRUGGLING TO HOLD BACK THO LIKE 😩😩😩🤣
I'm not a hair cutter (but I wanna try!!) but a potter. Similar painful feelings when trying to stand back and watch students doing pottery! 😳😅
@@songmakerdragon2393 I feel so bad for the potter who came to my elementary school and taught us all how to make pinch pots 🙈 no doubt she was probably cringing the whole time 🤣
I followed this video and cut my hair today and I am so THRILLED with how it came out!!! Thank you so much for making this simple and easy to follow! I’m so happy I found your channel! Thank you thank you thank you!
I can’t help it. I see a split end and the snipping just happens. HAPPY TEXTURE TUESDAY!!! I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!
I watched this, and then I did it!!! I took about 2” off and my hair looks fabulous. And feels so much better. Thank you Mel! You made it so simple to follow.
THANK GOODNESS FOR YOU LADIES DOING THIS 😍 you’re gonna save me tons of money lol
Hi, Mell! I've just done this haircut and so satisfied with the result! Thanks a lot!
I love this, thank you so much. I am 62 and my whole life my hair had just a small wave. The past 4 years it has gotten more curl. Most women my age have to get perms. My hair is more like Amanda's. I am going to do this today!! Thank you Mell, I love watching you!
Thank you so much! I followed this tonight and it worked out beautifully, Amanda's hair is the closest I could find to mine. This helped so much! 💜
Aaahhhh!!! I’ve been wanting to cut my own hair, but I was scared cuz I don’t want to mess it up. I’m ready to do it now tho. Thanks Mell!!
I love how awkward but inspired Amanda is. You're a great instructor Mel. Lovin your videos Ladies!
I'm still staying at home for the most part and I'm in dire need of a haircut. Thank you, ladies!
I just want to say that I have long curly hair and have watched TONS of tutorials on this
This is one of my favorites!! Very good! You guys have gorgeous hair! Thanks for the tips!
Amanda's voice is so adorable and Mell's is soothing! :)
Thanks Mell and Amanda! I been doing the unicorn haircut for a while but I wasn’t always 100% happy. I’m going to try this!!!
OMG I was so anxious watching. I got “scissors happy” couple months ago and it was a disaster. But watching this cut was great. Thank you for doing it, I wish I could give you 100 thumbs up
Edit: just did this cut, wasn’t as difficult as I thought. I cut less than an inch, but this will be my go-to haircut from now on. As I read in a comment, a Mell-icorn 😄
Aww such a throwback I loved rewatching this! Years later
Love you Mel 😍 the only curly hair guru that I trust.
Mell! Thank you so much for this tutorial. Amanda! Thank you for volunteering. I just cut my own hair for the first time and I’m in love with it ❤️ my own texture is much like Amanda’s, just a bit more relaxed, so this was a great learning tool.
Yes!!! Thank you! I needed a haircut BEFORE everything shut down and now my stylist isn't coming back for another 3 months.
I love how fast you flick those shears.
I have been eyeballing the unicorn cut AND bangs. I'm so glad you made this video. 😍😍
