  • I was wrong!
And I’m not the only one.
Turns out, health professionals around the world were wrong about how the keto diet works.
    But you know what?
I embrace finding out I’m wrong. In fact, it motivates me!
You see, I’m committed to RE-searching, meaning continuing to ‘look again’ at our current mainstream health beliefs in search of the truth.
So for this episode, I share some new, groundbreaking research with you regarding the ketogenic diet.
Plus, I also give a sneak peek into my new book, Unlocking the Keto Code - Available to purchase here - t.co/IICtHoPAHF
If you would like to be a part of episode 200 of the Dr. Gundry Podcast please click here - t.co/6w5EYyJYLg
    On this episode you’ll learn:
The history of the ketogenic diet - and why it has become increasingly popular over the last several years
Why 60% of people on a traditional keto diet FAIL - and what makes MY version of the keto diet incredibly easy to follow (and extremely effective)
Why some people can seemingly eat whatever they want and remain thin (while others CAN’T) - and what it could mean for your health
The REAL reason behind “stubborn fat” that just won’t budge - and how to “hack” your body to use fat as energy
The biggest MYTH about ketones - and how to get ALL the benefits of a ketogenic diet - without going keto!
The real KEY to efficient energy production, a slim physique, and a long healthy life (and why it’s NOT ketones)
The #1 change you should implement TODAY to have a maximum impact on your health, weight and longevity (it has nothing to do with what you eat)
My thoughts on “Hard Ketones”, the keto-friendly alcoholic drink company - and what I recommend instead for getting a healthy supply of MCT’s

2 years ago (during lockdown 2020) I searched "intermittent fasting" and discovered the world of *keto* 🤔
I dropped 60 pounds in 8 months and have maintained that loss for 1 year, 4 months and counting. During this time I've made tweaks to my keto diet that this video has officially confirmed as accurate and needed! 🤯 Basically I've leaned that keto to lose weight is different than keto to maintain weight and health. My body's been telling me what changes to make. Finding you at this point in my health journey confirms that the universe really wants me to succeed in attaining optimum health! 🙂 Thanks for this info!!!

The same thing happened to me when my cardiologist and pcp wanted me to go on statins. I have been on the keto diet for over a year now and I read I am considered a lean body mass hyper responder and that high cholesterol and ldl is expected but not worried because my other markers are good. I took the test to check my arteries using the dye and it showed that all my arteries were clear during the test. After listening to you just confirms that I am on the right track. I have been eating within the 8 hour period and do notice an increased performance when canoe racing. Thanks.

My personal plan that I have been following for 12 years with effective results is compress your eating window and integrate your workout into your fasting period, sleep at least 8 hours a night, eat no more than 1 or 2 meals a day, limit dairy products, salt and table sugar to a minimum, replace your wheat carbs through millet, oatmeal, buckwheat, bulgur, quinoa, rice etc (you need them to stay active and maintain good sleep quality) and you'll come a long way.

For about 12 years my doctors had me eating every 3 hours (that's SIX times a day) to deal with a diaphragmatic hernia. I'm a diabetic,, and this was hateful to me but I did it.. Now, the hole is still there but my stomach stays where it belongs now. It is taking a Long Time just getting adjusted to three times a day! LOL
I take meds and need food with them on 12 hour cycle, so I used that for intermittent fasting, but a colonoscopy derailed the process and I gained it all back.
At least now I know it's possible, and you have just given me a hope that it won't be so hard this time around! Thank you so much!

This is off the topic, but still related.
With any kind of diet, there is not enough guidance about the quantity, and it's mostly about the quality.
Per my personal experience of trying many diets, I concluded that how much I eat is more important than what I eat. I've seen this in energy levels/feeling good, internal health such as glucose levels, cholesterol, BP, etc.. and physical fitness.
Eating only twice a day, with zero snacking has done the trick for me. Once in a while I'd eat just once a day.
Another way to look at it is to eat only when I'm hungry, and a while after I feel hungry. Never eat because of craving anything, or because something looks, tastes or smells good.
The diet on itself is not going to do much good for a healthy body. We are designed to move, not only that we are designed to wake up before sunrise and start moving.
I start every day by getting up an hour before sunrise and doing a 2-4 mile power walk, as the very minimum. Other activities follow depending on the day. At least 3 days a week I do some strength training, over decades I found out body weight strength training is the safest and doesn't cause any injuries over long term.
So, back to the main point, eating less combined with staying active all day long every day is a solid formula to go with. Now add an ever evolving healthier diet to it and you'd be the real winner who'd live longer, healthier and happier life than the majority.
As an added bonus, kick out of your life any person, though/ideology that brings you down or causes any stress or negative feelings. Just ignore, exclude, delete, cancel any and all negative people, and only connect with positive, happy people and things that YOU love to do.

My dad’s cardiologist is an alternative doctor. When my dad first saw him the doctor was more diet and exercise then going to straight medication or surgery. So I have been jokingly calling him my dads voo doo doctor because his methods work.
My friend is 40ish and starting having some heart issues and she went to my dads cardiologist and he recommended that she do the plant paradox he also put her on heart medication for now but with your plant paradox she will probably get off that medication. So because my dads cardiologist suggested you I am now in the process of doing the plant paradox because I do not want heart disease.
My sister likes the Keto diet but doesn’t stick to it and gains all her weight back she loses. I’m going to by this book for her in hopes that she likes this better than the restrictions of the keto she does. Thank you so much.

Dr. Gundry I am on the second reading of "Unlocking the Keto Code" and I have a question relating to a statement in chap 6, The Truth About Fats, that I hope you can find time to explain further. In the section, "Exercising your Options", you say, "following a ketogenic diet over the long term has been shown to increase the production of an enzyme that slows your metabolism. When your body makes a lot of this enzyme it prevents glucose from entering cells." This sounds an awful lot like my problem. Can you identify the enzyme? Can a person be tested via blood-work for this enzyme to show a quantified result which could be baselined? I am running into a stone wall with trying to become more insulin sensitive. I am over two years on keto at age 75 so I'm thinking I fit your description here with loosing too much weight and trying to get some back. Thank you for you good work.

I started the keto diet to lower my cholesterol. I'm in week 9, to me the 15-pound weight loss is a bonus for me. I ordered your book. I go for blood work in a month. I really just want to eat normally. I miss most vegetables, beans in chili, cornbread, beans, and potatoes. Will I ever be able to eat normally again? I don't want to end up on statin drugs.

It is not boring to me, there are al lot of different animal proteins and fats. Sone people choose to eat mostly beef, but you can eat pork, chicken, turkey, lamb, venison, bison, any wild meat, real butter and ghee, cheese,, fish, and eggs. That is a wide variety. I eat ham and eggs one day, maybe a ribeye steak the next, fish one day, venison one day, bacon and eggs one day, cheese sometimes, and hamburger as one of my staple foods. I add a vegetable once in awhile, and a little fruit in season.

@@nickbuis3307 Yes, I hear that argument all the time, boring and no variety, when it is far from the truth. Even hamburger, there is many ways to fix it. I make a pie sometimes with egg and a variety of cheese filling, with hamburger as the crust, it is delicious. I have been Carnivore for over 2 years, and honesty, I could just eat a huge ribeye everyday, maybe with a little seafood cheese, or a few eggs. If you look at eggs, they are one of the most complete foods you can eat, Duck eggs are really good as well.

This guy can be so helpful to so many people. For people with difficult problems diabetes n macular degeneration the biggest things to learn get rid of n stop eating bad oils in processed foods chips breads n carb type processed foods. Or stop eating or start fasting as its a natural way to heal during cold n flu season but has many other benefits as well. As fasting pushes your body to start healing itself through autophagy as well as stemcell production. And its cheap and its free once your body reaches ketosis byou will no longer be hungry all the time its not super hum,an but it is humane in all humans kind of like a SURVIVAL MECHANISM. SOMEBODY PUT IN US A LONG LONG TIME AGO. BUT unfortunately very few of us know about almost like a survival instinct.

You may want to check your muscle/fat ratio. You may be your "optimal" weight BMI-wise however your body composition from the muscle/fat ratio standpoint may not be optimal. A body bio impedance scan will provide a better picture.
And generally time-restricted eating/ anti-inflammatory diet are beneficial for most people in most normal situations. You may need to eat more calories and more frequently if you exercise more than you normally would, for example. But generally it's a good place to start.

I've heard many opinions on what constitutes what counts when trying to limit your eating window. Most say water, black coffee or tea is not problem, some say fats, think bullet coffee, is okay, others say supplements are okay, etc. What is your rule of thumb as to what breaks your fast?

    • @littlevoice_11
      @littlevoice_11 2 роки тому +2

The research shows that it depends on your goals:
Weight loss and improving insulin sensitivity- black tea/coffee, herbal tea, ACV, sugar free/calorie free soda, salted water/electrolytes, sparkling or plain water, lemon in water, vitamins and minerals are all fine.
Deep autophagy: water. Some research shows certain herbs/ACV can enhance autophagy too so these can be useful.
Improving insulin sensitivity and keto adaptation: technically a sugar free exogenous ketone would be OK if it enables you to increase your fasting window more comfortably, improve mental clarity during ketosis (if not fully metabolically flexible) and to improve athletic performance but will count towards your overall calorie consumption for the day.

Revolutionary info on how Ketones really work.. Thanks for sharing this Dr Gundry.. however I am looking forward to the raging debates to come with the Keto heavy weights in the likes of Dr. Mercola, Dave Asprey, Dr. Berg, Dr. Peter Attia etc..to name a few on this new understanding. I have just started reading your new book and has been a fascinating read so far. I’ve been on Keto for about two years now and have recently begun flexing in and out of Keto regularly to maintain weight and to not completely miss out on foods I enjoy. The fact that Ketones make the body burn more stored fat with less amount of work I thought makes this an efficient process. Efficiency in terms of “more gain” (fat loss) vs “less work”. I really love the approach in your book for consuming healthy Carbs for promoting a good microbiome resulting in mitochondrial health which really what seems to matter for overall well-being and longevity..Thanks for another great book Dr. Gundry.

@@NansGlobalKitchen My understanding of good carbs are those that are 1) beneficial to your microbiome, 2) are rich in micro nutrients (minerals, vitamins, polyphenols) and 3) low glycemic. Generally high fiber vegetables and fruits fall into this category. Fruits and whole grains that are higher glycemic and containing lectins need to be either avoided completely or consumed cautiously
