  • Keto has been promoted as a magic bullet for weight loss by its supporters and slammed as dangerous by its opponents. It's no surprise - completely removing almost all carbohydrates is not what most people consider ‘a balanced diet’.
    With carbs off the table, Keto diets involve a dramatically increased fat intake. At the same time, drastically reducing carbs means starving our gut microbes of the fiber that feeds them.
    Nonetheless, doctors prescribe keto diets to treat people with severe diabetes and see dramatic improvements, and many healthy people swear by keto for weight loss. On top of this, removing carbohydrates prevents blood sugar spikes and crashes linked to inflammation and disease.
    In today’s episode, Jonathan speaks to a leading nutritional researcher to understand whether or not keto diets are a crazy fad:

    I have been following the keto lifestyle for 3 years and love it. I lost 120 pounds and my prediabetes is resolved. At 61, I am healthier than I have been for 30 years. i can even bend over and tie my shoes without blacking out. My blood work is excellent and my body weight is where it should be. One thought, all of the major food manufacturers and Pharma hope we do not take up this lifestyle, they will go broke.

    Healthy keto saved my life. I've been pain-free and type-2-diabetes-free since 2017. Never going back to eating carbs, sugars and processed oils. Yes, it's a restrictive diet: it restricts the pain right out of my body and I am so grateful.

      Same here! Arthritic pain gone. Acid reflux gone. Flatulance gone! Eye floaters, gone. Bunions, much improved. knee problems gone. And not only that, but the outer half of my eyebrows have come back in. Here's hoping my white hair turns brown again!

      No you do not need to be in ketosis to get the benefits of Keto… listening to this was so frustrating as this Dr should have been on the Keto himself to really understand keto! Were these people in the trial actually Fat adapted to start with? I know many people who have been on a Keto diet for years with no problem. It is not a diet it is a lifestyle and not restrictive apart from abstaining from all the things that are not good for humans in the first place. Fibre is a furfy! Too much fibre is not good! I was never sicker than when I was eating
      fruit and many vegetables and whole grains….that gave me IBS!
      Meat is full of nutrients and fibre, Keto is high fat but also protein, if you don’t eat enough Fat or get enough protein then the Keto lifestyle will be hard to stick to. Most people I have heard of who fail with Keto are not eating enough nutrient dense food and allow themselves to get hungry. I wait to hear what the outcome of the “poo” from this study show.
      To the person whom said Keto was horrendous… maybe they don’t like cooking or eating luscious food? This morning I made a coffee with whipped pure cream, bacon and eggs then for lunch I had a delicious Cheese and ham Omelette. Served with 2 cups of green mixed salad.
      Dinner was a Pizza made on a base of minced Chicken topped with bacon and three different cheeses…and a small amount of onion and capsicum and low carb tomato and oregano sauce.. (home made)….desert was Yoghurt and blueberries with a dollop of cream. Eating this way for 6 years and dropped three dress sizes and no more aches and pains!! Oh and having a high LDL is not the problem… most of the research used when it comes to cholesterol levels and heart etc… is all done on people who are on very high carb and highly process food ways of eating… the data is not reliable…

    I've been keto/ketovore for 2-1/2 years and at 74 am healthier than I have been in decades. It has restored my health and my doctors just say, 'Keep doing what you're doing." I am not bored with my diet nor do I ever intend to go back to a high carb diet.

    I am 85nyears young and have been on a keto programs for the past 5 years. When I started the program I was aiming for no more than 20/30 gms a day, making up the balance with 70 % fat and 30% protein. I ate red meat once a week and the balance made up of 50% fish, 50% chicken/turkey (usually dark meat). I lost weight, I lowered my A1C from 9.0 to 5.5 and have not felt better in many years. I now eat only 2 meals a day, fasting for 16 to 18 hrs. each day. Occasionally when we go out for dinner, I will cheat a little and have some bread. One of the most important aspects of my way of eating is that I record all the food I eat and I'm honest. I try to follow the program that Dr. Eric Westman recommends. He is a professor at Duke University. I too am very happy doing Keto. Best wishes to all.

      I agree with you 110%,. I'm 73, not fanatical about keto, I don't weigh portions but just do things sensibly, but have cut out carbs and sugar with really good results in terms of BMI and reduction in joint pain.
      I bake low carb bread every week, it is fantastic for toasting. You really don't have to go without on keto, this evening I made avocado chocolate ice cream!

      The key is you basically became your own Dr. That’s the key. It’s a great elimination diet. Glad you are doing well. I did the same thing with plants only. I went from 285 to 207. Good for us!

    Sauerkraut, Kemchi, Natto, whole fat yogurt and Kefir are great for the gut microbiome!! You can also get fibre from cruciferous and leafy green veggies. Being on Keto and Intermittent fasting, for *_5 years_* , I've eliminated beans and whole grains from my diet and my blood markers have been consistently great.
    I'm 64 and it's the best I've ever felt in my life. 👍🏽

      The study was not done with people who wanted to change and get healthy, so of course they wouldn’t stay on a keto or Mediterranean diet

      Is it me or does this guy look 80 yrs old? He's 63. I'm 78 and rotate in and out of keto, I guess I agree in principle with what he says about combining a Mediterranean and keto diet. It's what works for me.

      That’s great, I hate beans 😆 The take away is that strict Keto works great if you can stick with it. I’m at the eat all the meat you want while trying to reduce carbs stage myself and even that seems beneficial.

    I've been Keto/Carnivore for 13 months and have never felt better. No longer pre-diabetic, no aches or pains even after a good cardio workout, always have energy and sleep very well. Being healthy isn't profitable, will put a whole lot of people in mainstream medicine out of work and take a serious chunk out of the pharmaceutical industry.

      With Med diet I lost weight but kept the cravings, with Ketovore (carnivore weekdays 20g keto weekends) no more arthrities pain, normal blood pressure, no cramps ( with electrolytes), and feeling great. Plus easy to follow!

    18 months on keto, 11 stone off and back to the gym, it's worked for me. I still cannot understand the misconceptions around it. Grains and alcohol, not sure I can see the health benefits from either. On keto, I do have vegetables and fruits, again, the misunderstandings are crazy. Keto helped me reverse pre diabetes, I no longer need to take anti inflammatory meds either.

      @@Nancy-ko2zv hi Nancy, it's actually exactly two years to the day, I have blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. I use lots of lemon too, I try to buy organic. Let's say a handful a day.

    I've been doing keto for the last few months and feel fine, weight loss is continuing steadily. What struck me was when I go shopping, probably in a supermarket, that there is aisle after aisle of carbohydrates - breads of all sorts, cakes, crisps, pasta, rice, sweets, sweetened drinks, etc, etc. Lots of processing, to make them seem different, tasty, but basically all carbs. It's no wonder there are so many people struggling with their weight in the UK!

      I completely agree! I have been trying first keto and now more low carb, but letting myself have chickpeas and a few other things. We are surrounded by delicious tempting Carbs and often with loads of sugar added too! Trying to find something to eat when you're out and about is really hard! Thankfully a well known cafe chain does salmon or eggs with salad to takeaway, but without them I'd be lost!

    I'm going to add my two cents. I spent all of my fifties and half of my sixties gaining, gaining, gaining. Extreme stresses in my life caused me to eat too much, too often and the WRONG foods. When I finally came to realize that all this eating was my way of dealing with emotional/psychological feelings from those stresses was wrecking my life. Ended up with high blood pressure and prediabetes. Overweight by more than a hundred pounds. When I finally decided my health was more important than anything I began with Keto eating, eventually including some intermittent fasting. I've now lost 90 lbs, can finally exercise again and feel so much better. My doctor agrees. Blood sugar/AC1 is great. Blood pressure down.
    I DO eat carbs. However, the carbs I eat are broccoli, zucchini, greens/spinach/romaine, turnips, bell peppers, radishes. . .and so on. We eat very healthy. As far as I'm concerned I would rather do without the pasta, bread and other starches and keep my health.
    As are as the food pyramid is concerned, it was developed to help farmers sell their wheat, barley, corn etc, not for the good of people in this country.

      I feel that I get plenty enough fiber on my own ketogenic diet journey. I eat lots of spinach salads every day I make Chia pudding I put tons of seeds in my homemade bread and an avocado a day as well as high fiber vegetables. Getting a lot of fiber, I don’t need the grains.

    I have been doing Keto and IF for months now and the outcome has been nothing but positive! I’m 54 years old and my CBC blood panel is outstanding! I have lost weight and don’t miss bread at all. I will continue this lifestyle due to the excellent results I have obtained.

      Bread is refined processed foods. So it was the processed and high sugar diet that was cut out. That probably means you are no longer eating chips and junk foods. Proteins are hard on your organs. Does your diet exclude fiber from vegetables?

      12 months for me and not just keto I experimented full carnivore and wow the results are dramatic. Zero fruit, zero veg, zero fibre. In the best, healthiest shape of my life. Age 65 and sprinting up and down sand dunes with no DOMS and excellent bio markers with zero arterial calcium. I'll stay with carnivore now, never going back and goodbye chronic metabolic disease. The book "The Big Fat Surprise" by Nina Teicholz explains how we got into this mental state of needing carbohydrates. If Prof. Gardner read this I am sure his well meaning views would change.

    I was bedbound at 50 with ME/CFS for nearly ten years after a severe throat virus. Limiting my carbohydrates means that at 60 I am able to lead a relatively normal life once more - DIY, gardening, riding, etc. Somtimes I drop off the wagon and have bread or cake and within days I begin to have severe joints pains and feel the fatigue coming back. I'm not a keto devotee but low carbs/high protein definitely helps me manage my symptoms.

      I had CFS after EBV & Citomeglar for over 10yrs & tried lots of things, I think an alternative treatment of hot baths with a treatment called Kahuna Body work helped me. I didn't know about low carb diets then bu am looking at now for seizures

    The fiber issue is easily solved. I add acacia fiber to every meal every day. I find no problem fasting 23 hours out of every 24 and eating one keto meal per day. I am in remission from chronic lymphocytic leukemia, I have lost 47 pounds, my A1c is 4.9, I am 79 years old and my health and my labs are excellent.

    I suffered from psoriasis for more than 15 YEARS and all forms of medication failed. I went on Keto and IF and my psoriasis healed in 4 months. Plus I became much healthier overall as keto + IF got rid of chronic inflammation

    Whilst I was trying to eat well with carbs, my brain seemed to have a button with "eat" written on it that it would constantly push. Occasionally I felt I had no choice but to eat a massive meal, like being a junky on carbs, eat, eat, eat, jab, jab, jab.
    As soon as I switched to very low carb and full fat, that constant jabbing stopped. My body felt at rest for the first time in my life. I felt like I was giving my body what it needs. So adherence is absolutely no problem at ALL. I am reducing my carb intake more and more as I learn more, and I will never go back.
    Be careful of thinking that grains are such an important part of our evolution, the foundations of our body makeup happened long before they were used.

      Exactly this. I don't maintain strict keto, I eat low carb, high healthy fats. Eggs, avocado, vegetables, pasture raised dairy and meat in moderation, limited fruit, berries if I want them (I love blueberries or blackberries on full fat Greek yogurt)
      I eat very limited grains, effectively none. I do eat some unprocessed carbs, for example, occasional garbanzo beans oven roasted to golden brown and crisp are great on a salad or with a meal but they're an accent, 20-30g no more.
      I avoid processed foods like the plague that they are. I don't use pro-inflammatory vegetable or seed oils, avoid foods with added sugar and most GMO foods. If I really want a treat I'll have it and go back to the way I eat right away. A treat would be something I bake or high quality vanilla bean gelato. I don't crave it but I do love it and I know that we can have celebratory foods if we have them rarely and if they don't trigger us to continue eating.
      I learned this from Dr Jason Fung; we don't have to be rigid, instead work towards consistency. If I eat healthily 98% of the time, get exercise and good sleep, in the absence of any condition that would preclude it or trigger more eating, I can have an ice cream or some bread or a dessert at a celebration. He talks about going on a cruise with his family and eating the cruise food. When he got back he had gained some weight. He stepped up the fasting and carb restriction and lost it right away before his body began to treat it as his new set point.
      I've lost over 100 pounds and I bike 20 miles most days. I was disabled for over ten years due to some bad things that happened to me but I'm healthy now and I want the lost career and life time back. I know I can't have that but I can do everything to be as healthy as I can into my 50s and beyond.

      I was a huge sourdough bread and pasta lover, but I would be craving more food 1-2 hours after a carb heavy meal (potatoes, rice, flaked oats as well). Before switching to a low carb, moderate protein, high fat diet style, I would start looking at the clock at 10:00 for lunch. Not an issue anymore.
      Not counting calories, not peeing on test strips or checking blood glucose. I just check labels for carb content and stay away on heavily processed food and seed oils. Plenty of fatty meat, fatty fish, shellfish, cheese and eggs. A bit of greek youghurt (10% fat), berries and a fair amount of leafy greens and the occasional avocado.

      @@StangspringDK why the occasional avocado instead of many avocados? Avocado is high in healthy fats. It's a wonderful food for low carb.

      @@Kyarrix Good avocados are hard to find in Denmark. Often they are hard as rocks when in the store, or mushy and discolored as hell. I like avocados, but I get disappointed a lot. A nice steak topped with a good avocado is hard to beat.

    I have never eaten more leafy greens, broccoli, celery, asparagus, mushrooms and avocados than I do now on my healthy whole food keto diet. I also eat 3 tablespoons of chia seeds every day for even more fiber. I get way more fiber than I did before starting keto.

      I agree. I find myself eating more healthy foods and increased more of a variety of Whole Foods . Before I was eating high starch and high white flour carbs.

      Lectins in the super food chia seeds. ( Dr. Gundry) Beware, according to his UA-cam info. But he also says we need to give " fruit the boot." & gives interesting reasons. Hard to believe anything for a while now.

      I have moved on to Keto/Carnivore and eat almost no carbs and no fibre, I have no gut or bowel issues, I have regular bowel movement although not every day.

    Keto took away my anxiety and depression. I have always been thin but being skinny doesn’t bother. Also got rid of eczema brain fog and hair loss. It’s also relevant in the field of psychiatry and oncology. Why does that not get mentioned?

    5 years now, hardcore meat-and-seafood heavy keto and long term fasting. I am healthier than I've ever been, I don't miss a thing. Zero desserts, zero fruits (other than avocados and olives), zero bread, zero pasta, zero rice, very low fiber. My idea of cheating is an ONION on my steak. I am healthier than I've ever been eating this diet for 5 years. I LOVE the foods I eat and I don't miss any of that garbage.
    I reversed diabetes, arthritis, allergies, and various autoimmune issues, mostly within weeks of starting this, and I never looked back. Gardner is still stuck in the school that this is "extreme". He is a vegetarian ideologue, though not as bad as some. Meat heavy diets are sustainable and the healthiest way to eat for the vast majority of us.

      Healthier or you feel better? What is your lipid panel? Protein in your urine? No fiber in your diet...it really does not sound too healthy. I've lost 110 lbs on a whole food plant based diet, I had it all, high BP, heart disease, stage III kidney failure, blind in one eye and going blind in the other....now I am clear of all of those, not just diabetes and high blood pressure. I can see enough to pass an FAA eye test and can fly my plane again. My BP is 110/55 (new born baby BP), total cholesterol 110, LDL 55, triglycerides 57, BMI 22.5. That is both hard (death dialysis, blindness...) and soft end points low BP, no insulin, and I feel better. As a previous insulin dependent diabetic I get a yearly physical with blood work 3x a year. Congrats on feeling better....how are your health numbers? Everybody says they are healthier on this type of diet but nobody shows their blood work...

I'm due for another yearly test, I'll let you know how they are but they are usually exactly where I want them to be.

    I started a low carb - not strict keto - when I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes over 5 years.
    I am not 'high fat', I did not drastically increase fats. I still eat foods with fibre. It does not get boring or unpalatable. I actually eat many vegetables I never tried before.
    And my diabetes has been in remission for 5 years.

    My husband is on the autism spectrum and the most amazing outcome of a clean ketogenic diet (3 years) is that all his sensory issues are so dialed down that he's like an entirely different person, so much so that he calls himself 2.0 (a genuine upgrade). At 57 he experienced the emotion of "happiness" for the first time ever in his life and now he is happy most of the time and both of us have eliminated all our health issues. Eating this way is for life and we don't miss any foods, so it's not sacrifice for a 100% improved life for us both. We also won't be holding our breath waiting for so-called "nutritional science" to disentangle from big business long enough to actually care about people's health. I was a health researcher, so my cynicism comes from being an insider and seeing what actually goes on.

      Thanks for sharing. I didn't know Keto could help with autism specifically, but that doesn't surprise me actually. High sugar diets of the past 50 years have caused a great deal of damage.

    I’ve lost a fair amount of weight on Keto, I have a lot more energy than I had on a carb based diet. However my main reason for starting the diet and one I never see mentioned is to control asthma., ie, it isn’t an issue when I’m on this diet. I haven’t used inhalers for five months and I can exercise without triggering an attack. I would love to see more research into this

      There was a documentary (maybe on UA-cam) on fasting/keto for asthma in Russia, I think they had a fasting retreat or something in Siberia where they treated asthma. My allergies have completely disappeared since fasting/keto

    I have been keto now for almost 2 years, no cravings for carbs, and I don't get any pressure from friends when I say "I say no thank you" to offers of food that I don't want to eat. I am 68 years old and healthier than I was at 58. Before I went keto I ground my own ancient grains, made sourdough bread, grew and cooked beans and ate lots of local fruit and steadily gained weight. Since keto I sleep better, have more energy and have gone from 140 lb to 115 lb. Very sustainable!

    3 1/2 years of keto for me and I love the food I'm eating. At 61 I feel better and have more energy than I had at 41. Eating a combination of foods much closer to what our species evolved with, seems to be working out for me. I can guarantee that our ancestors were in ketosis the majority of every year they were alive. High amounts of carbs were simply not available most times of the year.

      I think some people will just never get the point that humans never had nearly the amount of sugar and high carb processed foods we have today. We're not talking cavemen. That's why we have a rapidly increasing obese population developing type 2 diabetes at a far younger age than ever before. So put some sugar on you yak and cook it in canola oil. 🤣

      @@thomcarr7021 Cake is entertainment, steak and eggs are not. Only a small fraction of nutrients are absorbable and that also comes with oxalate poisoning, alkaloids, glycosides, tannins, oxalic acid, anti-vitamins, volatile oils, furocoumarins...I'm sure I'm forgetting a few. So with little nutrients plant do provide, they're being counteracted by the anti-nutrients. A plants only line of defense is a chemical one since they can't flee or have claws to defend themselves. Seeds are even worse as they are the future of their species so their toxins are more concentrated.
      Search youtube for 'why I'm no longer vegan' and you'll see why people always come back to meat.

    There is no such thing as "I am hungry, but not for that" If you are genuinely hungry, you will eat what is available. What you are describing is not hunger, but a craving. On Keto, I no longer crave foods, so I eat less. I am confused how this is somehow a negative.

      Exactly - I'm never hungry on keto anyway, and I never crave carbs - I just look on carbs as sugar, and who wants that in their body? I eat so much more healthily on keto, and I was able to get out of a pre-diabetic state. Carb pushers are working for the carb companies, in my view. In England the govt some time back held a conference on food and health - who sponsored it? Tate and Lyle - the sugar company. Nuff said.

      @Mock Turtle, +1. I am keto and couple that with IF and periodic extended fasts. I never eat because I'm hungry. I eat when I decide that it's time to eat. Sure, I can see a food and desire it, but that's not real hunger. I call it head hunger. I am in absolute control of when I eat. It's friggin' amazing to have this control over my body. Many days, I'll wake up and will ask myself the question, "Am I gong to eat today?" Quite often, I decide to skip eating that day. While fasting, I can even cook for my wife, and not eat any of it. After breaking the sugar addiction and getting past the withdrawals (keto flu, which I never experienced myself), hunger is almost nonexistent. Keto, coupled with restricted eating, is amazingly effective for becoming metabolically healthy.

    I am age 69. I was pre-diabetic and sedentary until one year ago. I started exercising and lost a little bit of weight, a few pounds. I started “healthy keto” five months ago and have lost 28 pounds, I am at my ideal weight with a normal bmi. I have had two short breaks from the plan, two days at Thanksgiving and the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. I gained four pounds at Thanksgiving and eight pounds at Christmas. Both times I continued to exercise, aerobics, strength training, balance and stretching, I exercise in some form every day. I felt bad, bloated and grumpy when back on carbs. It was the holidays and the food was rich and sugary, it wasn’t healthy. I will continue my “healthy keto” and exercise for life.

      @@lynlawley8903 I educated myself on the ketogenic diet and cut out most processed food, white flour, sugar, bread, rice and potatoes. I eat meat, broccoli, cauliflower, salad, cabbage, eggs and cheese. There are many keto friendly foods and recipes out there, but I find most aren’t really that good or that healthy. Learn to check labels at the grocery store. I try to live a ketogenic lifestyle. I exercise and try to get enough sleep along with cutting out carbs. Also, I practice intermittent fasting. I restrict the amount of time I eat each day, I eat 4-6 hours and fast the remainder of the day. I am not a health coach, dietician or doctor. You should get professional nutrition advice. Health Coach Kate, Dr Ken Berry, Serious Keto and Thomas DeLauer all have channels on UA-cam dealing with these topics. I have learned so much from them.

    Interesting to hear this. I’ve found Mediterranean incredibly difficult to stick to. Keto, though, takes away cravings for sugar and carbs. I eat less on keto, and have sustained it for years. I also feel better. I’ve intermittently tried other eating habits and inevitably end up back with keto.

      I was in your camp for many years. I know have a more balanced view of food and have lost 8 lbs out of the blue. Only ting I have cut out is most highly processed foods. And when I eat bread it is organic sourdough, 3 ingredients, non bromated flour and previously frozen which makes it more like a resistant starch. I didn't have to skip my beloved peaches this season 😍

      @@valerie4975 the reality is everyone is different and can tolerate or not tolerate different foods. Some people have underlying conditions that make carbs feel like poison. Some people can’t handle fat. Some people get to the point where they can’t eat most foods without having reactions. My hunch is gut health issues play a major role in people’s individual experiences. The main thing I promote is awareness of these differences, and encouragement to anyone to understand their health more. For me, I cannot tolerate even a small amount of many foods, most of which are higher carb. It hasn’t always been this way, and hopefully it won’t remain like this forever.

    What a disappointment to have only one speaker discussing one paper. I would rather have several experts discussing the evidence rather than this interview. Just not helpful and, I felt misleading. The keto diet is not fundamentally low in fibre. Look at nutritional tables for leafy green veg, asparagus, broccoli, cucumber, zucchini… I could go on.
    I would recommend people to visit Diet Doctor for information based upon a wider field of evidence.

    Reading the comments suggests a huge number of people have benefited from keto and are adhering to it in one form or another because they can really feel the health benefits. These comments are in stark contrast to the suggestion from the prof’s study of 40 people for a short period that Keto didn’t do much compared with a Med diet. I’ve just started Keto (2 weeks in) and am already feeling much better - esp reduced pain from inflammation. Not something I have experienced when eating my extremely “healthy” Med diet. The lack of craving is brilliant.

      One reason Keto works is because after an adjusting period blood sugar stabilizes, hunger and cravings go away and it starts working on weight loss right away. To do it right listen to every one of Dr. Eric Berg DC many video's on Keto his version is Healthy Keto. He clearly explains the science and the details of why Keto works. Carbs especially fructose can trigger people to struggle and fail. I had 50 years of painful diet failures lost over 100 lbs twice, gained back the first 100 within a year, but this last time low carb with intermittent fasting has kept it off 13 years. God led me to this help and I am very grateful to Him.

      At this writing, I've been eating a high fat/low carb diet for about two months. When I started I was at or near 260 lbs. Within ONE WEEK I lost 5 lbs. Two months in, I'm down 35 lbs to 225. I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing and see where it leads me. So far I like what I'm seeing.

      Yes I felt the same, I gave the vegetarian diet a really good try and it did very little for my cholesterol, it also made me feel weak. The biggest improvements were from 2000 mg of niacin a day. I don't believe Cholesterol when high is anywhere near the problem it is portrayed to be by drug companies looking for profit. The true problem is systemic inflammation caused by our appalling foods. I am giving keto a try at the moment, see what happens so far I feel good.

    I like the satiety factor of Keto you're just not hungry between meals. Which is good for me as a diabetic type 2. I was always so hungry on high carb. Also I have found that on this life program, there is endless variety on Keto, I don't understand those who say it's boring and Limited . You can make your own bread and lots of other recipes that you miss. The desire for sweets diminishes overtime as well. You can definitely stay on this diet for a lifetime.♥️

      I agree with the comments above.
      Ive tried for years various eating patterns as a triathlete now at 61yrs .
      I find keto with 30 to 50g of carbs a day easy to maintain .
      I eat once a day ...train 2hrs a day and have a huge green salad or big bowl of caciferous veggies a day ...adequate fibre for the gut .....this is the best eating pattern i have been on for energy and well being

    I was on Keto for about 2 years prior to the pandemic, and lost 100 pounds. Once we had all the shortages at the grocery stores, it became difficult for me to stay on it. I went off Keto and gained all my weight back plus some. A couple months ago I went back on it and am down 30 pounds.

      Keeping that kind of weight off is tricky. Most people gain it all back, slowly but surely. Your body really wants to go back to the way it was, metabolism lowers and hunger increases. So you really have to stay on top of things while you adjust. Keep watching sugar and carbs, don't let your cravings get out of control. Get plenty of exercise.
      It didn't happen just because you went off keto. You obviously slid back into a poor diet. You can gain 20 lbs without realizing it, but 100? Come on.

      This is usually what happens. People gain back more. So now that you know, why don’t you plan for it. When you reach your goal weight, why not eat keto Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, plant only Monday, Wednesday, and then pick one day a weekend to eat normal- which is crap food. Just a suggestion. Or, just eat and go on kept keto when you are 5 pounds above your desired weight. I wish you success.

    I come from a family that hated vegetable and eat mostly meat. My father at 99 has no health issues, my mum has only a slightly raised blood pressure at 95. They both walk about 5 km per day , are very active and enjoy life. We started having some health issues once my husband and I decided to try a plant base diet. Back to ketogenic and all our health problems are nearly gone.

    I changed my health for the better with keto - I don’t miss bread, cake, pasta, or snacks. It’s easy to follow when you’re motivated and the dietary changes provide such tangible benefits for me. Keto has been around for way more than 50 year. It was rediscovered as a therapy for epilepsy.

    I've been on a Keto diet for 10 months and lost 40 pounds! I am at the weight I was when I was a teenager. I have no cravings at all! This is the easiest diet I have ever been on.

    After the festive season, I have to say that the major problem in staying on a restrictive diet such as keto is OTHER PEOPLE. No matter how clearly you inform people that you are staying with, or are staying with you, that you do not eat certain things, you find that they do not respect this. They even decide to pressure you to eat them, or sneak them into things that are served to you. I've even had a relative go shopping and place shop-bought cake in my fridge, as one example. She said "I thought you were losing too much weight"(my BMI is 26, she is obese). The last relly went home 4 days ago and it's going to take a while to clear my fridge of stuff he bought. Some can go in the freezer, some stay in the pantry til I have visitors again. I'm unclear whether this behaviour is a lack of understanding, or a desire to sabotage your diet, maybe because they feel you are pretending to be superior to them? Anyway, I recommend living on your own, as fortunately I do, if you want to stick to dietary restrictions.

      Totally agree. I do 1-2 months of true keto (20g or lower and mostly fats) each year. Some people are curious, but some friends/relatives have been relatively agressive in trying to make me eat the foods they think I should be eating, or have dismissed my discussions as a 'fad' or crazy diet. I would never push my choices on anyone else, I dont talk about it unless asked, and primarily do it as I have type 2 in my direct family and early deaths due to it. It isn't easy (mainly due to resistance from others and difficulties eating outside the home - I feel great on the diet) and I transition to a whole food/high above ground veg/high fat diet for the rest of the year. Currently not even prediabetic, well past the age it commonly appears in my family, so I will continue, but it would be nice if others would leave me in peace!

When I make them happy by eating a slice of cheesecake at Christmas or their box mix brownies or their bottle bbq sauced baked beans then I am accepted into the family It takes days to recover from the food tyranny. 🤦‍♀️🥳Thankfully I survive it with Grace. I am 90% carnivore for 2 years. 73 years young and my only regret is not having learned about this in my 20’s. 😂

    I've been ketogenic for just over a year and love it! No craving for sugary foods....and no diabetes. I feared getting diabetes. As a nurse I see that people with diabetes usually end up having a cascade of numerous other diseases and in a sad state of suffering every day. So very sad. I will stay keto thanks. We'll who doesn't love a good juicy rib-eye, bacon, eggs, avocado! I eat sumptuously each day if I'm hungry enough! All my blood markers are great except the LDL is a little high. My blood pressure at 64yo is pretty good at 125/80. My height is 1.56m and weight 54.5kg. I feel fantastic! And I think keto and running on ketones mostly is good to prevent alzheimers. Keto works great for me. I'll stay keto the rest of my life 🥑🥩❤

      There are two types of LDLs, large fluffy ones and small dense ones. Only the small dense ones are bad. As long as the triglyceride is low, you probably have lower small and dense LDLs and you have nothing to worry about.

      I am also a nurse who has seen how diabetes and other chronic ailments can take over your life and how our diet is so important in improving our health and how a low carb/keto lifestyle can actually be the answer for millions of people. Unfortunately big pharma and big food will have researchers in their pockets in order for information, like what was presented here, to get published and out to the public. Unless you listen to this with some skepticism you will not discover the real truth. Follow the money. It will open your eyes to the corruption in these industries that are trying to keep us sick and fat so they can continue to profit$$$$. Watch documentaries on the science of sugar and see how addictive and dangerous it is and how it ruins our health. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that, but maybe someone on the fence between Keto and continuing with the SAD will benefit.

    Been experimenting with keto since march 2014, ketovore since about 2019 and carnivore for maybe 6 months. Not missing carbs at all. Resistance training consistently for about 12 years. Best shape of my life at now 55.

    KETO! If you’ve never tried it personally, you really don’t have a good frame of reference. I can only say that it basically saved my life. I’m 63 and I’m healthier than I’ve ever been in my life. My gut biome has never been healthier and I have boundless energy. I was afraid at first to even try it because I could not understand how this could be good for you, but it truly is and it’s life changing even beyond the weight loss and getting off prescription drugs.

    Been keto for over 2yrs now. Lost about 50lbs, blood sugar came down, blood pressure came way down, inflammation markers all went back to normal, still working out and in my opinion my body looks better than when I was a young man. Love the food and will not go back to eating standard american diet.

    Been on keto for a year. Was pre diabetic then crossed line over to diabetic. Was put on meds. 3 months into diet, no meds, ac1 at 4-5. Lipids were very good as per dr. And weight loss so far over 50lbs. No sugar cravings at all. I get fiber from keto breads and veggies. I do take a multivitamin. Dr said keep doing it.

    5 years of eating a clean low carb/high fat diet reversed my pre-diabetes. My blood pressure is 120/72. I've lost 12 pounds and my A1c went from 6.3 to 5.7 without medication or much exercise. I am 55, I eat beef, bacon, eggs and butter all the time (grass fed and pasture raised) I enjoy a wide variety of delicious foods and never have to go hungry. My cholesterol panel just came back and all of the numbers and ratios are ideal. My liver enzymes (ALT/AST ) went from being chronically elevated for the last 12 years to a reading of 23 which is in the ideal range. Results don't lie people. I am only one of tens of thousands of folks like me who have reclaimed their health by eating low carb.

    I have leukaemia, and my lymphocite and white blood counts were rising. My first decision was to try and cut out sugar, and refined carbs. I very quickly lowered counts on both blood tests. I don't adhere to a strict keto diet, I still eat fruit (local, not tropicals) and dark chocolate. I also fast for a day, sometimes 1 1/2 days a week. I am 82, swim, pole walk, do pilates and ballet training. I hope to continue to not be on any prescribed medications. I doubt I could stick with a very strict diet, but combining a level of keto with elements of mediterranean diet, suits me. I think the views expressed in this video are unnecessarily pessimistic. Commentators on here have lengthy experience that a keto based diet does work. [The only problem I have had recently, is horrid reaction (ongoing) to Pfizer vaccine..... ]

    I have done many diets in my life. I in the last 15 years after menopause I started with dash diet and lost 25 pounds and got rid of intense sugar cravings. Then got lazy and gained a few pounds even though I was not eating sugar and processed foods. I like routine so I tried keto because I really felt terrible ,tired and lazy. I got maybe 8-10 pounds but I had energy and felt good. I tried plant based and started eating grain and a bit of bread,started to feel bad again,developed low iron as well. I have hasimotos ,ibs and gerd. I went off grains and bread and follow Atkins loosely. I eat lots of fresh vegetables, some meat and little fruit. Fruit can fire up the gerd sometimes. I am 64,5’2” and right now 126 lbs.most of all feeling good. I work 3 am to7 am 5 days a week and look after my Granddaughter 9 hours a day for a 5 days. So conclusion for me is that I do not do well on grains and bread. Just my experience!

    My waistline is the best indicator of what works for me and what doesn't. Doing keto I went from a 46 waistline to a 40 waist. But as soon as I go back to eating carbs, next thing I know I'm back up to a 42 waist.
    Eating carbs makes me fat! Plain and simple.

    I've been on Keto for 5 years, very successfully. In that time I've lost 360 pounds. I keep carb usually between 50 to 120 grams. My cardiologist notes that I'm no longer pre-diabetic, no longer have Cor Pulmonale (extreme reshaping of the right heart structure and shape as well as function) I no longer have moderately severe left heart failure, I no longer have alpha 1 antitripisen diffisency, liver is now pristine. The National Institute of Health has about 40 NLRP3 Inflammasome based chronic diseases all of which can be slowed, arrested, reversed or ELIMINATED. Including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, T2D, Lupus, gout, neuropathy...

    I have been on keto for 4 years and eat yogurt with berries flax,chia seeds and acacia fiber added to my food daily. I have gotten rid of 11 of the 12 autoimmune diseases (NAFLD had me at stage 1 fibrosis and within a year and a half completely clear), when it took both my brother and mother. And lost 100 lbs in 13 months.
    I always ate minimum of 25-50 carbs and rarely hit the fat levels because you are just not hungry 🤷🏻‍♀️

    My health has improved since I started Keto. My blood glucose has gone way down, and my A1C is now normal. And for the first time in my life I've lost weight. It's also not a restrictive diet, and grains are not healthy, I eat fruits and I'm satisfied with what I get to eat.

    Adherence is a funny one The fact that people find it very difficult to follow a healthy diet doesn't mean that people shouldn't try to follow it as much as possible. I've been eating high-fat low carb for a while now having done a lot of reading about it and it has sorted the middle aged spread and some digestive issues that I have experienced. I'm thinner, fitter and healthier than I have ever been. Do I occasionally eat some chips or a bit of cake? Absolutely. That doesn't mean I should abandon the whole thing.

      Exactly. Yes, I eat some carbs but I choose where I eat them. Never with a meal and no one loves a great bread with a slab of cold butter on it like I do , but when everyone else is crawling to the couch moaning about how they ate too much I'm still at the table eating vegetables. If there's fruit pie for dessert I'll eat the pie because the benefits of the fruit outweigh the few carbs involved. We're humans. If we're told we can't have something, we crave it

      OK are you saying you are a vegan? No criticism I've done it and found it very satisfying. Typically I got hungry at meal times (no snacking between them) but a meal with at least 40 plant ingredients satisfied hunger. Obviously I lost a huge amount of fat and put on muscle due to increased exercise. When I went back to old habits I found myself unable to satisfy hunger with just a large meal. I had to snack. I'm moving away from poultry and mammal meat but still eat fish and dairy do you? I'm focused on microbiome and eat mostly what is recommended for that. I eat a healthy diet now and am a very fit 70 year old but I'm thinking of going vegan again problem is I love cheese and fish.

I don’t take any dairy and no meat but I wear leather shoes so can’t call myself vegan . I have lots of energy , I do a min of 250 push ups daily and in the gym this morning bench pressed three x 10 reps at 80 kg. Park run every week and a long 15-20km run on a Sunday , all the while working full time and walking 4km to work each way . No meat and dairy working for me so far at 60 . Thanks.

    I'm keto 4 mo's, and my anxiety has reduced my 80%, LIFE CHANGING.. and I'm up 8 lbs of muscle, first time in my life, probably because my hormones are balancing out. Also my skin is super soft, the inflammation in my feet is mostly gone, and I can literally go without eating for hours now. And these are common keto results... the science shows us that the brain runs better on fat than carbs, and that grains (even whole grains) have minimal nutrition, and turn into glucose (sugar) in your body. So if you want to age fast... eat grains. If you want to reach a new level of health...eat fat. If you're still not convinced, see the movie Fat Fiction, then give it a go for 30 days.

      @@eugeniebreida1583 I will share my diet meals 3 boiled eggs, 300 gram of greek yogurt, 2 TB of chia or flax seeds, stevia to add to tea but I'm going to switch to monk fruit soon, and cheese. if you don't have greek yogurt, add 2 TB spoons of olive oil to your non greek full-fat yogurt. forget from time to time I eat meat, salmon.

    The major reason people use a Ketogenic diet is for obesity and Diabetes. I tried all kinds of diets and could never mantain them and always gained the weight back. I started Keto 6 years ago and lost 70 pounds and have maintained that loss for 6 years. The longest time that I have been slim. Many issues I had in my health are gone. And my triglycerides dropped to 37. My LDL rose about 20. Never felt so energetic or well in my life. My pre-diabetes is gone. My HbA1c is now 5.2 for the last 4 years. My CRP went from 55 to 7. My joints no longer swell or have pain. I had a low level of depression but that is gone and my emotions are very stable. I have zero vitamin deficiency. I did try increasing carbs that are healthy but started to gain weight and my blood sugar started to rise. So no, sorry, not going back to beans (gas) and grain, which caused a huge weight gain. I don’t limit my vegetables and do have some below ground vegetables. I have seen these studies before and Keto takes the hunger away and more carbs increases hunger. Hunger is significant and I cannot do a diet that keeps me hungry. You do you and I’ll do me.

    My two-pennorth is that I experimented with my diet to see if I could find out what was causing my horrendous life-long migraines. I think it took me so long to realise that it was grains and sugar because I was an addict. I started eating differently and had no idea that it was a thing till a friend said I was doing keto.
    I'm a vegetarian (including eggs and cheese, but not milk because of lactose) and eat lots of fibre so it can be done, and I avoid processed food as much as possible. I've never felt so healthy and if I check my blood glucose it's always below 4 mmol/L. I understand the level for ketone production is 4.4 so I presume I'm in ketosis though I've never bothered with a ketone meter beause all I care about is whether I'm fit, healthy and have plenty of energy.
    Having an eating window of 8 hours or less also makes me feel healthier.
    If I do eat refined carbs (like birthday cake or a mince pie) all my aches and pains come back, and if I overdo it and have seconds it's a 3 day migraine. It's easy to stick to when I remember that.

      Reminds me of when I had gallstones... nothing like a stabbing pain in your back when have the slightest amount of fat to get you to eat a lowfat diet. Immediate and strong feedback. Gallbladder is out now. I find a CGM fills a similar role for helping eat low carb. I wish they were over-the-counter here in the US like in Canada.

    Since I am on a Keto diet, (as a vegetarian) all my body ailments like knee pain etc. are gone. Different feelings of addiction and graving for unhealthy food etc. are also mostly gone, so that translates into a more calm and relaxed mind! Never felt better! Now, I just need to exercise more...:)!

      @@lynlawley8903 as a vegetarian on a Keto living style, I mainly substitute meat with Quorn (fungus based) or sometimes Tofu, eggs. Quorn, one can find in the deep freezer section. Milk products I have sometimes cottage cheese or some sour cream. Vegetables should be low carp, like the cruciferous ones. Avocado very healthy! Mushrooms and berries are very good, but a bit expensive sometimes for me..:) One can eat a lot of good meals with the Keto diet, even if one would be a Vegan, it should be possible. The meals should stay low in carbs and more higher in fat. No sugar. Do you have other questions, please ask...:)

    I'm on lchf for 8.5 y. I eat c50g carbs per day. 80g on very active day. I cycle lots. Eat loads of veg and some legumes. Eat berries. Christopher should talk about stuff he knows about. Humans didn't eat grains a few thousand years ago but ate intestinal contents.

    I’m epileptic and I agree that following a strict keto diet can be hard, but it has changed my life very much for the better. I have less digestive problems, skin issues, and am overall healthier. It also reduces the number of seizures I have. Honestly I prefer plant foods to meat, but I enjoy clean keto. It’s much like the Mediterranean diet.

    I am on keto and have so many issues with this, but here are some thoughts. I would suggest this trial was way to restrictive and didn't provide the wiggle room allowed. It is one of the most researched ways of eating of all variations. Generally those that start have done their research. You only need 25 - 30g of fibre a day. I get that by eating a lot of veg and adding a few grains. You can stay in ketosis above 20g. If you do keto you would test your ketones occasionally and test your limits of carb intake. I can be in ketosis up to 50g of carbs. There are two types of LDL, those on keto generally have the fluffy LDL, the good LDL. Many people on keto also fast, which produce even more benefits. Mediterranean cultures fast during the year. The other benefits haven't been mentioned include better sleep, even energy throughout the day, reduced inflammation, normalised blood pressure and I can go on, of which we have been told numerous times to get those under control. Yes, adherence is the comment always made. However it generally comes from people who haven't actually tried it. It is a lifestyle, not a diet.

    I ate keto for three years and felt great. I've added back some of the lower carb pulses: whole lentils rather than big fat beans. I also eat seeds regularly plus some root veg & fruit. I do eat whole wheat berries sometimes. Eating keto taught me a lot about how I deal with refined carbs (badly) and it helped me lose my sweet tooth. So I eat higher carbs than I did on keto but still pretty low carb because no sugar, no flour of any kind, no rice.
    A point I would like to make is that you didn't get further around the Med than Turkey. Why is that? The whole of north Africa and the eastern end of the Med were not mentioned at all yet they have great healthy food.

      Your point is an excellent one, ie that Keto is not as black and white as this researcher tried to paint it as. Everyone will react somewhat differently and therefore adjustments are required over time but it is clear as night follows day, that a high fat/low carb diet is species appropriate for humans.

      @@davidangel7478 Yeah, I felt it sounded as though keto folks didn't eat veg, nuts, seeds etc where as I know I could fit those in my 20g of carbs a day. Sure, portion size is important but it is for everyone. It's really easy to eat an awful lot of nuts for example.

      I agree. They are Mediteranean too and their food isn't low carb yet its healthier because they not only have healthy oils and fat but ancient unprocessed breads and home made pasta etc and lots of fermented pickles. Most mediteranian people eat at meal time only and do not snack all the time by the TV in cinema and in the games. Yet I am afraid this culture is being copied all over🤨🤨. Keto advocates for keeping low in the blood hormone insulin that is released from the pancreas everytime there is sugar / carb to metabolise. Due to our constant eating, food and snacks high in carbs, insulin levels are constantly elevated - hyperinsulinaemia. The cells develop insulin resistence. Insulin being high constantly is one of the elephants in the room....a leading cause for T2DM and obesity and chronic diseases.

    Lost 5 stone so far in 8 months on keto and intermittent fasting. Once body adapted to fat burning I’m able to exercise and fast with no problem. Also the cravings for sugar and carbs have gone. I eat strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberry’s. I use coconut oil and eat plenty of eggs and vegetables. I use meat substitutes 😊

    we lived off the keto diet (hypercarnivore to be specific) for over 300k years in our current speciation. "the science" says it is absolutely the diet we are best adapted to.
    we ate hardly any carbs prior to the agrarian revolution 8-12k years ago, and our current excessive carb intake began with refrigeration less than a century ago, right when rates of obesity and diabetes began skyrocketing.

      I just can't see a hunter gathering a few wild grains, grinding them down with a rock, mixing it with water and baking it on a flat stone and hoping it didn't burn when he was surrounded by steak. The Australian First Nation people would wait by an animal track leading to a water hole and spear the kangaroo and carry it back and thrown the whole carcass on some hot coals turn it a few times and eat it!

      Prehistoric archaeology is often grossly misleading, because remains of plant foods are generally much less well preserved than bone remains from food animals. Pleistocene human remains (older than 11,000 years) seldom preserve gut contents. New studies in Iran, of sites where food remains are unusually well preserved suggest that foraging for edible plants was a much more important part of Pleistocene diets (especially for women) than was previously assumed. They were using a pounded mixture of wild seeds, grains and legumes to make a kind of cooked, unleavened pancake, probably by heating it on hot rocks.

      @@alayneperrott9693 'Foraging' implies lots of walking, bending over, just plain work. Going to the grocery store is way too easy comparatively. Go outside in the woods, see what you can find to eat. It'll be animal meat the majority of the time and they'll be lots of fasting. If you're lucky enough to be near large bodies of water, it'll be seafood, which is implicated in larger brain size (fish protein is different from land animal protein in that it encourages brain development and synapse connections).

    I've been doing keto for over a year and still love it. No longer do I need to take Metformin! Have lost over 20 pounds so far. Realized also that my leg cramps have vanished. It was the sugar that caused them. I eat a lot of vegetables, by the way. I find it very easy to stick with this diet.

    I eat low carb and keto but still get 25g of fibre a day ( female) it’s not hard at all. It’s not meant for most people, but it’s stopped me being diabetic. Low carbs doesn’t mean no carbs. Keto is still around 50g carb a day. You can still eat bread. One slice of average wholemeal bread is 14-18g carb a slice.

    I have been on keto for the past two years- taking a break every so often to challenge my insulin sensitivity and it has been fantastic. I am a 2x cancer survivor and could not believe having cancer in the first place on a strict Standard American Diet ( I hold a phD in human nutrition). My thoughts-For the insulin sensitive or below 40 & active - Mediterranean option may be appropriate. But for the others - Keto may be the only option to prevent or treat metabolic syndrome!

      Everyone has cancer. There are other factors of much more significance than nutrition in play, when it comes whether they turn malignant. if you compare age brackets causes of death of a (western) european country (like my country switzerland) to the US one thing is immediately obvious: reasonable diet shifts cardiovascular disease in the above 85 bracket, while in the US it takes over in the above 65 bracket. it should also be taken into account, that life expectancy is 84 in switzerland (80 in US) (some variation depending on source).
      if you have a reasonable diet like in western europe, it won't matter to much. by the time cardiovascular disease gets you, you likely are suffering from cancer, dementia and a lot of other things. (remark: swiss average diet is not quite mediterranean, but somewhere between germany, france and mediterranean, 2nd remark: for the above 85 bracket, other reasons than nutrition may be of more importance, when it comes to cardiovascular disease.)

      There's a lot of research now on the role of oxidative stress perpetuating insulin resistance. The high fat approach, where you are using fatty acids for energy generates a high volume of electrons during betaoxidation, which also have to be fed into the electron transport chain. The voltage gradient that this generates in the intermembrane space actually stops the oxidative cycle and free electrons then form superoxide anions with oxygen. This is a key metabolic problem and feedback directly causes or perpetuates insulin resistance. Many people feel that they improve their insulin resistance on keto diets - but lowering blood sugar levels through reducing dietary sugar intake is not the same as lowering them as a consequence of the cells taking up the sugar. To genuinely improve insulin resistance one would have to experience lower sugar levels even when eating carbs.

      @@Kathryn-Alexander Thank you for your response. I would appreciate references to this suggested effect especially if there is no excess calorie intake. Also glucose is not an essential nutrient for humans, I believe the body is intelligent enough to manage excess electrons if there is no excess calorie and if protein and fat are consumed in adequate amounts to maintain calorie requirement. Not forgetting that whether glucose is consumed or not the liver and kidneys will produce enough glucose specifically for the brain, red cells and the kidneys. Even with low/no carb insulin still directs the glucose produced by the body. Also nutritional ketogenesis occurs during fasting. I believe the body uses the required ketone bodies for energy and wastes the rest in urine, breathing and sweats. Insulin resistance associated with low carb diets is reversible within a short time if and when carb is reintroduced.

    Regarding the sustainability of a keto diet, is it not true, that once you have got into ketosis, and have learned to maintain low carb (several weeks/ a month in), occasional carb cycling or the odd "treat" such as a birthday cake, can be enjoyed? I have been following keto for 3 years. I was extremely strict for the first year and. half, them began to allow myself odd treats. If it were a celebration, or something I could plan for I would take that into account. After consuming carbs I know Im out of ketosis, so to get back to fat burning state, I just extend my fast a little longer, reduce carb intake a little further and within 2 or 3 days im back in ketosis. I personally have found this way of eating the most sustainable.

      Yes same as me. I always asked those who claimed to manage to put their diabetes into remission by following Med diet, but when I asked them how do they handle the blood glucose spike on whole grains and fruits... I always got no answer !

      @@zhuhaibaker7816 look at the results of cordioprev study where they say keto and med had the same result in lowering sugar but they actually removed all diabetes medications on the keto diet and kept half on the Mediterranean. And that is not how they report the study though.

    Keto has enabled me to start my weight loss journey and lifestyle changes. I'm not on keto anymore but 6 months on keto gave me results that allowed me to see that the change is possible. Keto allowed me to start sheding unwanted kilos without the initial need to comit to any physical activity. Now, 1.5 years later I made massive lifestyle changes, I eat only healthy, unprocessed foods, go to the gym 3 times a week, walk every day and lost almost 40kg and my plan is to use my 40s to get the fittest I've ever been in my life.

      @@vera_6779 Not sure if you’re being honest here, but even so, then you certainly also lost some muscle mass and strength during your weight loss. I didn’t lose any muscle mass and strength. Science shows that high fat - low carb diets are better for fat loss without losing muscle and strength, that’s just how the human body works. The purpose of weight loss is to lose mainly body fat without losing muscle.

    I certainly understand the Professor's resistance to Keto. It was very difficult for me and I had Keto Flu the first 2 times I tried it. I and my husband have been on it for 2 years now, his participation has helped tremendously, and we are retired I have always loved cooking so that makes is soo much easier. But you have to cook almost every little thing. I had to make my own ketchup and BBQ sauce for the first year and a half. Sola bread came along so now I have white bread, hamburger and hot dog buns.
    But so many things are just chocked full of sugar and high fructose corn syrup.
    That said, my a1c was climbing but not to the type 2 diabetes yet. I am now 45 pounds lower, he is about 50 and at his target, my triglycerides are low for the very first time, my HDL is amazing, and one nurse even called me to tell me I needed a doctor's appointment because it was way too high.
    But I stopped eating constantly in fact I eat 1 meal a day and am never hungry until it hits my eating window. That alone has been worth it to me! You can't imagine how hungry I was when I was eating sugar. I even saw my doctor because it was becoming socially unacceptable. He had no answers.

      It can last from a few days to (rarely) 1-2 weeks and you may experience headaches, sleeplessnes, insomnia, constipation... symptoms usually dissapear once keto adapted

    I started 90 days ago on carnivore (no carbs) and I feel better at 50 than I did at 40 and 26lb's lighter. All aches and pains are gone bags more energy which is constant., It's amazing to see how quickly you realise the difference between hunger and craving. Carbs for me are a thing of the past.

      @@JAspen-xe9nv Carnivore is keto. The recommendations say about 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbs. But that is not grams but energy percentages. Fat is 9 kcal per gram, protein and carb is 4. On carnivore you cut out carbs completely. If you eat fat fish and other fat meat, you should be in ketosis.

    I've been on a low carb diet for nearly three years, it's not keto just low carb but has changed my life at 61 I was putting on weight and feeling old, I'm now 64 I'm back to my 25 year old weight my joints feel better I'm more awake through the day and my food tastes like I remember it used to,. I keep getting flash backs as different tastes & flavours keep developing. Wish I was 25 again but this is a good compromise 😉

      @ChrisW. I aim for 20g /day, rarely go above 50g (Except Thanksgiving, Christmas). I am mentally prepared on the day after, for the day after full on "keto flu". Those symptoms subside within 48 hrs. It has turned me from feeling helpless to in charge.

      @@MsTony1402 I was joking about dying although a friend's 31 year old brother died of cardiac arrest after two years on keto.
      Long term research has never been done because no-one has been on keto under research conditions for long enough to study results. Long term is more than 20 year's.
      I tried keto, after 29 days I felt bloody awful, filling my body with saturated fat was so gross. I had constant migraines from being constipated and my blood pressure was through the roof. My Dr advised me to stop. I did lose weight though, but it wasn't fat.
      I went back to WFPB and am thriving.

    "clean keto" is the way to go, all your carbs from veggies. macadamia nuts, pecans, nutritional yeast, poppy seeds, chia seeds have amazing nutrients as well, I pretty much eat a head of something dark dark green every day. My husband does this too and we have since moved on to organic veggies, and buggeted out some other things we really didnt need. Weve been together 30 years and want 30 more. Ive never felt better in my life.

      Indeed. In fact our predecessors ate a meat heavy diet for probably 4 million years. As you say we have only grown crops for about 10K years, during which time our brain size, dental health, height etc have deteriorated.

As far as grains, cereals, and other plants being part of our ancestral diet, no one on the Keto side of things, disputes that fact. All we are saying is that these carbohydrates were only seasonally available and we evolved without them being staples as they have become since modern agricultural methods were introduced and yes, permitted civilization to flourish (to the detriment of our overall health).

      @@davidangel7478 I do not think that overall health deterioration is a result of eating grains. From what I have seen/read/heard, the general health decline of populations is mainly due to excesses - excessive consumption of refined/processed foods, of sugar, of animal products and a lack of enough naturally occurring nutrients in 'proper foods'. Add to that the sedentary lifestyle most westerners live. The problem of rising obesity/heart disease/diabetes is not caused by people eating too little fat and too many carbs, it is due to the quality and quantity of the food. People no longer eat what they need, they eat what they enjoy in quantities they enjoy, and there is no doubt that some foods create a need for more of the same.
      The introduction of agricultural methods introduced stability and the introduction of animal farming introduced pathogens and viruses. There's a book "Gun, Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond that is very interesting. Perhaps you have read it?

    You’re missing that there are many keto breads available that are mostly fibre. There’s so many keto products like granola and so forth that are super high in fibre. Also, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, kale, spinach, almonds, pecans… gosh I never get tired of so many varieties of food when you do keto healthy.

    Brilliant video. Always fascinated by this topic. Having been on a diet since I was 10 in 1966 and after removing my appendix the doctor told my parents I had to lose weight. I was a bit chubby! So I've been through them all - every diet. I finally figured it out. Only eat food with nutritive value ie. fuel. I rarely eat packaged food or anything with a nutritional label. If I do, it's a small amount. I discovered gardening, which keeps me active. I used to drink lots of wine and I have the occasional glass, but don't really care anymore. I've seen lives negatively impacted by it. The microbiome is crucial for me and all that digestive tract is in perfect shape. I have made my own whole grain bread for years, I have loads of good olive oil and eat avocados and nuts. All were things a stayed away from when I was younger. I discover Tim Spector in a YT short and I'm hooked! I hope you guys help a lot of people because it is life changing.....

    I would have liked to have heard about the studies that compare a Whole Food Plant Based diet with keto. I’ve reversed prediabetes and lost over 30 lbs on a WFPB diet. I’ve been following it for 2 years now and find it filling, enjoyable, and sustainable. This is the first diet I’ve tried that I know I can stick with for life.

      Also wholefood plant based can be implemented using keto macros (which is what I aim for - small amounts of low carb beans, nuts, seeds, Tofu, Tempeh, unsweetened plant milk and yoghurt, olives, herbs, spices, raw cacao, chlorella, mushrooms, non starchy vegetables, avocado, ACV, fermented foods such as kimchi can be added - diversity is key)

      ​@@thalesnemo2841 by the way... making meat cheaper is if more people bought it, seeing as demand for it is going down, it will become more expensive. that's how supply and demand goes... unless you mean it's cheaper because you primarily buy from the clearance section that will expire within 48 hours, then you're right.

      @@thalesnemo2841 when you refer to a LCHF carnivore diet as ‘evolutionary appropriate’ is that because of the unusually high concentration of human salivary amylase (the enzyme specifically appropriate for breaking down starch) in comparison to other mammals? Or is it because of the fact that our jaws move up and down,backwards and forwards and side to side, similar to most herbivores but unlike carnivores whose jaws only go up and down as they don’t chew their food but swallow chunks of meat whole. Is that what you do? Swallow meat whole without chewing on the ‘evolutionary appropriate’ diet for humans?
      (Ps I have nothing against the Keto diet as it has brought benefits to many people and am pleased it has done for you.However calling keto ‘the evolutionary appropriate diet’ isn’t empirically supported and has contradictions left, right and centre. Not least in human physiology and is under debate by anthropologists)

      Yes I follow a UA-cam group called typeonegrit and the blood sugar control is historical. They follow Dr Richard Bernsteins book and how to control your blood sugar as a Type One diabetic. Amazing results.

      To Mediterranean d!iet seems more .easy,, and certainly more
      sustainable. Me, from a young girl.during the aftermath of W. W. 2, to a teenager , when I commenced a vegetarian diet, to the present, a Mediterranean /vegetarian diet works very well. However, my food
      has evolved into a low carb diet, not to follow 'fashion', but by a natural progression. At 80, I cannot complain! Thanks for all the

    My mom started strict Keto 3 months ago, she was high blood pressure, high cholesterol, borderline type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, low energy, joint pain, and issues with vision and cognitive memory function. She just got her blood results back and the doctor was blown away. She has no issues now with any of the above, oh and she also lost 16lbs, she hasn't been this body-weight(110lbs) since she before she was pregnant with me (38 years ago). She is 67 years old. The issue with these studies is the inability to track all the other factors that signal and influence hormones. One of the most important factors is natural sunlight and circadian rhythm. If people get enough sunlight(which has been shown to positively impact the microbiome MORE than diet), then nearly any diet will work. Even high carb diets, unfortunately, most people spend 90% of daily hours indoors, so that's where the difficulty lies and people focus on things like exercise and diet.

    I switched to a Ketogenic food-style in 2017.
    I did so to reduce my risk of Alzheimer's; I'm ApoE3/4.
    (I did NOT do it to lose weight; my BMI is about 19.7).
    Brains love ketones! So do hearts.
    I feel this food-style to be enjoyable and sustainable.
    I eat 2 meals a day and I don't snack. I never get "hangry".
    I don't eat vegetables nor fruit. Certainly not bread! I don't miss them!
    I eat plenty of protein and even more animal-sourced fat.
    I feel better & stronger than before, even at age-75!

    I had liver issues/fatty liver for over a decade (caused by being overdosed on Ibuprofen by the NHS for ~9 months following Encephalitis which led to morphological changes of my liver). I worked with doctors for a decade to try to fix my liver and the results only steadily got worse until they started talking about me needing a liver transplant one day. At this point I did my own research and ended up deciding to do Keto/IF to give my liver a rest from carbs (mostly fructose) and to see if it would heal. After 3 months my results were massively improved already. Crazy thing was the doctors asked what I was doing - I said Keto/IF and they told me to stop as they didn't think it sounded healthy. They gave me no other advise though. I saw an actual liver specialist and she didn't even know fructose is only metabolized by the liver! I honestly lost all faith in doctors after this.
    I will agree with this speaker though that keto is hard to stick to as a life-style long term, but as with most things it's about finding a way to make it work. For me currently that's doing keto for 2-4 weeks and then coming off for a weekend. It's 100% easier not doing keto but in my case that's because when not on keto I wasn't eating that healthy anyway and it's always easier to eat convenient food than healthy food no matter the diet. I also do agree Keto isn't great for fibre but again you can make that work by having things like chia seeds or treating yourself to keto bars which actually inadvertently often have a lot of inulin and other fibre's that are very beneficial to the microbiome.
    Personally I'd sum it up this way - if you're already in good health and are a good weight then Keto probably isn't a healthy diet and I wouldn't recommend it. However, if you're pre-diabetic, overweight and/or have liver issues and are therefore already in poor health I'm certain keto will give you improvements over your current lifestyle (especially if, like me, you tried Mediterranean and other diets and saw no improvements).

    My keto version diet includes lots of
    fermented food, mushrooms and various nut + plus veg..don't thing that deprives the micro biome..does it?
