I learned about Dr Mary Newport's experience on a UA-cam video shortly after starting LCHF/keto about 6 years ago. My wife's mum with Alzheimer's was living with us, and she had deteriorated to the point of "whooping" instead of speaking. So I thought we could try giving her some coconut oil maybe for a month to see if there might be a difference. To my surprise, there was an almost immediate improvement. So I increased the dose to the point of causing diarhea and then reducing a little, and gave it to her every 4 hours (in the waking hours) because 4 hours is the max life of chylomicrons. My reasoning was that she should therefore have the fats available pretty much all the time. The next step was to get "serious", so we put her on a strict keto diet of less than 20g carbs/day and I replaced the coconut oil with MCT oil. She didn't seem to do as well with just MCT oil, so I added back coconut oil as well. Maybe it was just subjective, but it does seem to agree with Dr Newport's experience, as related in this interview. She very quickly stopped whooping, and was able to have simple conversations, she was able to watch TV, and after a couple of months was even able to read again. She died at age 95 a couple of years ago now, and kept that level of improvement with no deterioration right up to the end. Thank you very much Dr Mary Newport, I just wish I had known about this before my mother-in-law had deteriorated so much. It should be publicised so that others can try it out. Even if it only works for some, that would still be great for them.
Why do people (experts) call ketones an “alternative” fuel for the brain? I would say ketones are the preferred fuel. And looking historically when we didn’t have access to carbs like we do today, it would be the primary fuel. Being in Ketosis is how we evolved as a species.
Our smart bodies prioritize burning glucose for fuel to try and maintain blood glucose levels. But our bodies can only do so much when we overload it with carbs.

My father died last year with dementia. Towards the end he actually told me he never had kids. He thought I was the lady who came by a few days a week to help his wife with "her" health issues. He offered me one of the guest rooms if I'd like to move in so I could be around to help her more. This video hits really close to home. Thank you both for the work you do.
Sorry to hear that. That is sad. Can I ask if your father had chronic stress issues like anxiety, depression, tension headaches? What kind of diet was he in most of his life as far as you remember? I've seen people battling chronic stress and mental trauma most of their life develop Dementia as they age.
@@white-rabbit93 I'm pretty sure his diet was the standard American diet. He owned and operated a meat packing plant which I'm sure came with a lot of stress. He never mentioned anxiety or depression to me, however for most of my adult life I lived and worked in other states, and sometimes in other countries. Up until about 6 years ago my main contact with him was two or three phone calls a month. We would talk for hours, and I remember distinctly the time I called, and he had nothing to say. Physically he was in excellent health, normal weight, no smoking, no alcohol, and he took no prescription meds at all until his dementia diagnosis.
Yup. My brother, 12 years older than me, married when I was in 7th grade (1972) so his wife knew me for decades. In the end she had no idea who I was. Asked if I had any siblings😑

You never know your partner is going through the chronic stress until one day he/she jumps off the top floor and dies. I believe the long term chronic stress is certainly the root cause of dementia over time. Diet and lifestyle contributes to its progression like the petroleum on fire.
This validates the interview you conducted with Amy Berger. This is a brain fuel issue. I have been using MCT on and off for a while now but I will start supplementing every day. I have also spread the news to whomever will listen to me. Some do since I have lost 80 lbs and I'm on a ketovore lifestyle. At 72 that's quite an accomplishment. My mother died of the Pick's form of dementia so I am so thrilled to see some progress in the area of dementia, especially since it is "drug-free".
Brett, I have to thank you so much for this content. My dear dad passed in 2022 due to dementia in his early 70s and he was fit, an accomplished oral surgeon and such a bright light in my life. His mother passed of dementia shortly before he started to develop symptoms. He tried to do everything right, eating everything that was standardly recommended but pretty high sugar and carbs. It was devastating to see him deteriorate and coming from a medical family I felt so helpless because all of the medication they had given him had done absolutely nothing. For the past 3 months I’ve been on a strict ketogenic diet and I feel like a million dollars and I wished I had this information 7 years ago. The we don’t even consider diet clinically for any condition is insane. I hope we are on the path to change

I don't know wether or not you read comments, BUT: I've been in ketosis for about 4 to 5 months, and I started it due to all sorts of mental health issues (ADHD, aspergers, etc.) and other physical issues, such as arthritis. I have a super sever misophonia (selective sound syndrome - certain noises trigger a super fight or flight effect), the worst I've seen. I was extremely surprised to find out that my misophoia symptoms, which have been super severe throughout my ALL life, have become more manageable. Earlier I would get super adrenaline rush if I were to hear childrens noises in a store, etc., but while I still find those sounds annoying, the reaction I have is much more reasonable. I just feel mildly annoyed and move on. I'm not engulfed with rage, like I used to be. The difference is EXTREME. I'm mind blown. It's been so bad to the point where I've occasionally fantasized about deliberately going deaf (although not since I found out that you are more prone to develop neurodegenrative disease if you don't use hearing aids). There aren't many studies on misophonia, but when you read through them, this is what they describe misophonia as: The literature suggests that the majority of patients with misophonia have normal hearing sensitivity (Schroder et al., 2014), while the limbic and autonomic nervous systems are in a heightened state of excitation and thus react abnormally to normal auditory input (Moller, 2011). And when you read about epilepsy, you can find lots of literature about epilepsy and hyperexcitability of the brain. Anyway, thanks for your work! I'm on a ketogenic diet which is pretty carnivore heavy. Feeling better than ever. It feels like I've been pumped up speed and testosterone. Feels absolutely good man. Never been in this good shape.
@@TheMJT515 I can’t of course know if we are talking about the same issue, but since I could walk I always left tables if other people were eating. I never ate with my family as a child, I never went out to eat - just stayed home. They knew how bad it was. They knew I couldnt eat, Id just hold my ears. Couldnt sleep in the same room as my brother due to him literally just breathing quietly. I sleep with earplugs and these hearing protections, I spend all day with either earplugs on or with noise cancelling headphones. Couldnt use public transportation due to noise from other people. Had to drop out of numerous classes in university and high school due to either disturbing sounds during the class or the teacher speaking in a weird way where they make mouth sounds. When I expand on the range of problems Ive dealt with with misophonia, people usually realize their mild annoyance towards a certain sound is nothing compared to the hell Ive had to deal with. :D Not to undermine yout struggle, of course, but mine definitely wasnt caused by a b12 deficinecy.

I just realized that Steve Newport is a kid I went to school with in Cincinnati, actually he was my first grade crush! I do remember an article about him in the paper several years ago. Thank you Mary for sharing your incredible story...I myself have been following a keto diet for a few years, and have been using the MCT8 oil every day also for several years, and I notice a definite brain function improvement. My husband had an accident 10 years ago to his head,very serious, and I noticed mental decline in the ensuing years. About 5 years ago I started him on the oil, but now I see the dose needs to be increased some. It definitely has helped. So sorry that you lost Steve, even in first grade, he was a sweetie! My father died in 2014 of Alzheimer's. He was extremely active. He had a PhD in exercise and recreation, ran the fitness program for staff at the University of Alberta in the '70s, '80s and '90s. He used to organize fun runs, public skating events, and seniors fitness activities. He was diagnosed T2D back in 1967 at the age of 38, and on insulin by 42. He was a staunch believer of CICO and was always promoting diet and fitness as the solution to obesity. He always talked about the concept of reduced morbidity, i.e. being healthy for most of your life and not lingering for years in an extended care ward. Ironically, he started showing signs of dementia in his mid-fifties (we didn't realize it at the time). He ate a (high carb) SAD, and enjoyed a daily drink or two. His Alzheimer's got to the point where he was placed in extended care in 2007, where he spent the last 7 years of his life. Very sad.
That is a sad story. I'm sorry to hear about your loss, and his loss of quality years. Hopefully the message from Mary, Amy Berger, Matthew Phillips, and others will help prevent these stories for others.
Very sad indeed I had to put my mum in a home 1yr ago after a stroke which has turned into the start of Dementia. I am researching MCT for my seizures started after a head injury in 2004 so have to try & get myself well first but will look into this diet for mum too.

After listening to a lecture by Mary Newport many months ago, I dragged out our heavy juicer (one with an auger) and found I could cold press coconut oil and "cream" from dried coconut. It is a superior product to the coconut oil we had been buying. After extracing the oil, we make milk by running the fiber through two more times. I use the very pure leftover white fiber on meatloaf and as partial flour substitute for baking.
If it's standard coconut cream that contains a lot of sugar (carbs) then it would be contraindicated for keto, esp a keto diet. But then so is putting MCT or coconut oil in oatmeal as she did. But she probably didn't realize this back then.
I stopped the video. First, Dr Mary, I an so sorry for your loss. Second as I begin to possibly battle cancer for the 3rd time I love you strength and attitude. Went out and made my coffee with grass fed butter and MCT oil and will be adding that oil to my husbands smoothie this morning. He is 72 and forgetting. Sending you absolute love and light. I love Dr. Newport and all she has done! I have a high school friend whose husband is dealing with this and I can’t even make her listen to this let alone try and save her husband. It’s beyond sad 😢 and frustrating!
I'm 68, and am starting to have issues with my memory more frequently, but the Weirdest thing happened when my husband and I went to my favorite breakfast restaurant, and I knew I was going to ask for my usual omelet, but instead I asked for a pizza with with veggies and cheese, my husband and the waitress looked at me strangely, so I repeated verbatim, not understanding why they don't understand, the waitress said we don't have pizza, I looked at my husband and asked, "did I say pizza?" and he affirmed I did...I think I'm in trouble but I'm so thankful I'm seeing these videos, I just got back from the store and bought some organic MCT oil, We keep organic coconut oil on hand anyway but I haven't been using it much lately, that changes today for my husband and I.

Add fasting and I think the results will be even better. Keto plus intermittent and occasional longer fasting is my plan to prevent Alzheimer’s in myself. Prediabetic at the moment and Alzheimer’s runs in my family (grandmother and an aunt) so I need to be strict now to prevent it!!

It seems to me that the medical establishment has been bought by the pharma corporations. I see this in the two nursing homes I have been in. They both will not change their dietary plan from high carbs and sugars to keto. They both prefer to give out pills. I am looked down on when I tell them I don't want their pills. They think something is wrong with me. I tell them I have read and heard a huge amount of information about the harmful effects of sugar and carbs that turn into sugar. I asked them to feed me organic raw foods but they would not. They stuck to the story that they were serving very healthy meals. I found articles about the kick backs nursing homes are receiving from pharma. Here is one story: The nation’s largest nursing home pharmacy, Omnicare Inc., has agreed to pay $28.125 million to resolve allegations that it solicited and received kickbacks from pharmaceutical manufacturer Abbott Laboratories in exchange for promoting the prescription drug, Depakote, for nursing home patients. CVS Health Corporation, which is headquartered in Rhode Island, acquired Ohio-based Omnicare in 2015, approximately six years after Omnicare ended the conduct that gave rise to the settlement. “Every day, elderly nursing home residents suffering from dementia rely on the independent judgment of our nation’s healthcare professionals for their personal care and their medical treatment,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer, head of the Department of Justice’s Civil Division. “Kickbacks to entities making drug recommendations compromise their independence and undermine their role in protecting nursing home residents from the use of unnecessary drugs.” Nursing homes rely on consultant pharmacists, such as those employed by Omnicare, to review their residents’ medical charts at least monthly and make recommendations to their physicians about what drugs should be prescribed for those residents. The settlement announced today resolves allegations that Omnicare solicited and received kickbacks from Abbott in exchange for recommending that physicians prescribe Depakote, an anti-epileptic drug manufactured by Abbott, to elderly nursing home residents. Fishwick Jr. for the Western District of Virginia. “Families and loved ones who make the difficult decision to place those they care about into a nursing home must do so with the confidence that medical decisions are being made with the interests of the patient in mind, not big drug companies.” Approximately $20.3 million of the settlement will go to the United States, while $7.8 million has been allocated to cover Medicaid program claims by states that elect to participate in the settlement. Being a fat adapted fat burner producing ketones IMO is the best way to prevent AD. I believe ketones are REQUIRED to feed our big brains for brain health from birth. I am counting on my ketones. I am ApoE4 and AD is in the family. Been ketogenic 25 years. So far so good. 65 and still working developing software for the space station. I will check back in 15 years. Ha ha. Yeah, medical food. I am eating it right now. A ribeye steak. "The brain readily takes up ketones" what does that tell you? Very few things pass the blood brain barrier. Tells me they are needed! Ketones not an alternative. They are required. Rocket scientist logic.

I experimented with my diet to try and find what worked best for my sleep disorder - narcolepsy. I didn't know about keto, but after some trial and error started low carb/high fat dieting. I really have to be very low in carbs though, and I don't do well without a large percentage of my diet in fat. I haven't done much with MCT oil, although I've tried it. I use coconut oil but I feel like I've missed a trick here. I haven't given it the prominence it probably needs in my situation. I have been keto about half my life now I feel I'm better off in general health because of it. My mother developed dementia, and I wouldn't say mild, but she was not evaluated medically. She lives with me, and I asked her to go on the ketogenic diet with me. She has recovered by leaps and bounds, praise God. I found this discussion to be extremely interesting, and feel that yes, the ketogenic diet is practically a miracle for us, but I need to look more carefully at coconut oil and MCT oil. I think there may be some virtue to the use of both and probably try to be consistent with it and use it more routinely like a medicine. Thanks for a great video and all your efforts. Helen, try carrington farms liquid organic coconut oil….. it is easy to eat a tablespoon with each meal since it is a liquid. Also avoid eating aluminum, dr Chris exley explains that aluminum is found in very very high levels in the BRAINS of folks that died from Alzheimer’s. Study dr Chris exley, ( and study dr Mary Newport) he tells us that drinking Fiji water removes aluminum from your brain. No aluminum = no Alzheimer’s

Again God led me to new and exciting information. I’m currently intermittent fasting, I’ve given myself a 4 hour window of eating. I believed from my wandering of the internet that healthy oils were essential for a healthy brain. I started taking MCT oil because it can help put the body into ketosis along with a low carb diet. Im a vegetarian getting my oils from nuts and seeds along with MCT oil. I’ve had to stumble upon all this new(to me) information , anyway here I’m listening to your testimony and glad you found each other. I started off just wanting to lose weight lol.

I've lost two parents to Alzheimer's. My mother in law first, before any of us knew about the diet connection. My mom second, but my little sister jumped in hard on her diet. My mom lived much longer on keto/low carb than my mother in law who was on the Standard American Diet. Go figure!
A marvelous podcast. Been following Dr Scher (DietDoctor) for a couple of years now. And Dr Westman as well. Here in the UK doctors do not like informed patients, at all at all (I’m Irish so at all at all is a qualifier in any sentence). I have got off statins and lost the weight gain with my own research and my confidence that the Keto/low carb diet, way makes more sense that the conventional treatment. Muscle pain has gone, although I feel that Statins wrecked my metabolism. So I’m all in for this information. Been a bit concerned that coconut oil might be deleterious for cardiac health so keep it to two teaspoons a day. I think I may become more adventurous, go a bit wild with it. Am wondering if the low carb/high fat diet is a good general diet for health maintenance and an insurance against modern day health decline.
look up Public Health Collaboration UK and Dr David Unwin... you may be find that more than two teaspoons of coconut oil per day feeds your heart muscles... or at least the ketones feed your heart muscles, look up Dr William Davis and Dr Aseem Malhotra for information on how.
I purchased some refined coconut oil from Pr uvit brand after watching some of the research a few years ago. I was also using Melrose Brand in a brown glass bottle about six years ago ... a few drops not a teaspoon amount would loosen my bowels...
My wife has Alzheimer's! She's on a drug trial that will last 3-years (Semaglutide). I've been on the ketogenic (keto) diet for 3-weeks now, plus 3-day fasting's, plus working out in a weight gym, every other day. Feel great. I'm 80 incidentally. My wife will begin her keto diet tomorrow, plus coconut oil, plus mct oil. Will try to get her down the gym too? We are both taking a moratorium from alcohol. Keep you posted...
I would like to ask if her husband Steve continued taking Aricept and Namenda after starting the coconut oil. My wife takes Aricept, we stopped the Namenda, and we've started the coconut oil and MCT oil, so I'm wondering if we should stop taking Aricept.
Arricept is on the list of anticholinergics that cause brain damage...so very ironic as it is prescribed for alzheimers! I quit taking it for mild cognitive impairment and started mct oil. Remarkably, my memory improved to the point that I could finish a sentence without stammering. I urge you to try it!
Amazing story and tremendous insight. I wonder if high vitamin D about 10,000 i.u. 3-4 times per day with the keto diet would have helped with the seizures since high D has been used in seizure patients who cannot tolerate anti seizure meds. Some anti seizure meds such as oxcarbazepine up-regulate TRPV1 an incretin that causes hyperinsulinemia and with the up-regulation of TRPV1 puts glucose into cells independent of insulin and the insulin receptor that leads to excess ROS and inflammation. So D with its antiinflammatory ability would likely help in that way.
I discovered the miracle of a ketone diet with my 93 year mother's mild cognitive impairment. She woke up from the 6-8 hour naps and became present once again. Sadly, I had to move for work and the remaining family were too ignorant to apply the strategies I used. So, of course she went the way most with dementia go - downhill. These days I am following Dr. Bredesen and Apollo health who have a greater voice in getting the word out about simple lifestyle changes to avoid what many believe are factors related to growing old. Another discovery, photobiomodulation or red light therapy (RLT) fixed my foggy brain related to long Covid or grief from losses. It would be interesting to hear what Dr. Newport thinks about RLT as it works on the mitochondria to improve ATP and consequently cellular energy.
I walked very softly as my sibs might whine. I put her on a keto diet and prepared all her food especially when she asked for favorites. I tried MCT oil in her coffee and subjectively noticed her sharper with MCT. She wasn’t doing much physical activity or fasting.
Were there any study/ evidence that the antidepressants he was given contributed to his dementia and the antipsychotics given for his seizure lead him to his demise?
MCT and monolaurin (via Lauracidin or UltrLaurin), along with high dose allithiamin, magnesium, vitamin C, and clean fish oil, is key to many brain illnesses including dysautonomia and post viral syndrome (like long covid)! Also immune disregulation , autoimmune type reactions, pathogen susceptibility and reactivation (herpes virus = shingles, insect bite = chronic bordetella/ borellia/ babesua, etc.). My hbA1c is 10.1 but i change my diet plan since 2 month , i am taking fruits&veg salads (apple,banana,avocado,guava,dragon fruit,cucumber,tomato,cabbage) with 2 boiled eggs everyday. Will it lower my hbA1c ??
Maybe. Do you have a glucose meter? Measure your glucose after 1 hr after eating and that will tell you if you're eating too much carbs. Somewhere around 125-150 you're in prediabetic/diabetic range. Preferably you want to keep your glucose under 125. You'll have to experiment with what you eat to really understand what food affects what ways. Fruit is hight in carbs, but does have fiber in it to blunt some of the effects of the sugars in them. However, fruit has a lot of fructose which isn't that great for you in my opinion.
Cut out the fruits totally. If you are not vegetarian eat lots of meat. No sugar, no flour, no potato, no rice, no processed foods. Listen to all the keto/low carb expert doctors on youtube.
Avoid vaccines, especially flu shot. Drink silica rich water (look up Dr. Christopher Exley), sauna on a regular basis. Don't use aluminum cookware or antiperspirants
Most people find they cant get above 3 mmol/L with diet and exerciser alone. With fasting some can get as high as 5. But most experts don't recommend going above that, although it is very challenging to do anyway, so for most people it isn't an issue.
Many people age extremely cognitively intact. That disproves any theory blaming age as etiology But today 80% of people are metabolically compromised. And in this case medications may not be the right thing to do. Another paradigm which is difficult to abandon is the ill to the pill.
Sounds to me like the doctors killed him with their poorly guided experiments. Same thing happened to my dear mother but it was rheumatoid arthritis and methotrexate.
How old is she? It can also be menopause. I was having serious issues with my words and also memory, went on hrt and i was okay within 3 days. Loss of estrogen affects the brain. If she is more than 10 years out from menopause, it might be too late. If earlier, the estrogen helps a lot.
The Mediterranean diet is good but not optimum. If you are serious about your metabolic health go on a low carb high fat or ketogenic diet. Even a carnivore diet is very good because you will be in ketosis without taking oil.
Isn't butter better than coconut oil? Or how about three strips of bacon? I understand that coconut oil is not toxic. The same thing goes for olive oil. We know that canola and cotton seed are toxic. But why not just eliminate all vegetable oils? There are so many vitamins and minerals in butter, you can almost live on it. If you are a caregiver, you could easily put a person on two meals a day. Put any carbs in the first meal and maybe zero carbs in the second. That way, you could probably eliminate the need for keytone esters.
Thanks for your comment. If someone is struggling to get into ketosis, or is in ketosis and wants to bump up their ketone levels, then MCT/coconut can help as they are more efficiently metabolized into ketones. But, from a keto diet standpoint, butter is obviously a good choice.
There’s also different types of MCT oil which you could try. I’ve also had better luck with MCT oil combined with keytones & electrolytes packets like “real keytones” brand.
I love your podcasts. One suggestion not related to the content: Your videos have an insane amount of dynamic compression on the audio that makes for an abrasive listening experience. My ears become fatigued within the first five minutes. Try relaxing the compression and tame the sibilance.
I learned about Dr Mary Newport's experience on a UA-cam video shortly after starting LCHF/keto about 6 years ago. My wife's mum with Alzheimer's was living with us, and she had deteriorated to the point of "whooping" instead of speaking. So I thought we could try giving her some coconut oil maybe for a month to see if there might be a difference. To my surprise, there was an almost immediate improvement. So I increased the dose to the point of causing diarhea and then reducing a little, and gave it to her every 4 hours (in the waking hours) because 4 hours is the max life of chylomicrons. My reasoning was that she should therefore have the fats available pretty much all the time. The next step was to get "serious", so we put her on a strict keto diet of less than 20g carbs/day and I replaced the coconut oil with MCT oil. She didn't seem to do as well with just MCT oil, so I added back coconut oil as well. Maybe it was just subjective, but it does seem to agree with Dr Newport's experience, as related in this interview. She very quickly stopped whooping, and was able to have simple conversations, she was able to watch TV, and after a couple of months was even able to read again. She died at age 95 a couple of years ago now, and kept that level of improvement with no deterioration right up to the end. Thank you very much Dr Mary Newport, I just wish I had known about this before my mother-in-law had deteriorated so much. It should be publicised so that others can try it out. Even if it only works for some, that would still be great for them.

Why do people (experts) call ketones an “alternative” fuel for the brain? I would say ketones are the preferred fuel. And looking historically when we didn’t have access to carbs like we do today, it would be the primary fuel. Being in Ketosis is how we evolved as a species.

Sorry to hear that. That is sad. Can I ask if your father had chronic stress issues like anxiety, depression, tension headaches? What kind of diet was he in most of his life as far as you remember? I've seen people battling chronic stress and mental trauma most of their life develop Dementia as they age.
@@white-rabbit93 I'm pretty sure his diet was the standard American diet. He owned and operated a meat packing plant which I'm sure came with a lot of stress. He never mentioned anxiety or depression to me, however for most of my adult life I lived and worked in other states, and sometimes in other countries. Up until about 6 years ago my main contact with him was two or three phone calls a month. We would talk for hours, and I remember distinctly the time I called, and he had nothing to say.
Physically he was in excellent health, normal weight, no smoking, no alcohol, and he took no prescription meds at all until his dementia diagnosis.
Yup. My brother, 12 years older than me, married when I was in 7th grade (1972) so his wife knew me for decades. In the end she had no idea who I was. Asked if I had any siblings😑

You never know your partner is going through the chronic stress until one day he/she jumps off the top floor and dies. This validates the interview you conducted with Amy Berger. This is a brain fuel issue. I have been using MCT on and off for a while now but I will start supplementing every day. I have also spread the news to whomever will listen to me. Some do since I have lost 80 lbs and I'm on a ketovore lifestyle. At 72 that's quite an accomplishment. My mother died of the Pick's form of dementia so I am so thrilled to see some progress in the area of dementia, especially since it is "drug-free".

Brett, I have to thank you so much for this content. My dear dad passed in 2022 due to dementia in his early 70s and he was fit, an accomplished oral surgeon and such a bright light in my life. His mother passed of dementia shortly before he started to develop symptoms. He tried to do everything right, eating everything that was standardly recommended but pretty high sugar and carbs. It was devastating to see him deteriorate and coming from a medical family I felt so helpless because all of the medication they had given him had done absolutely nothing. For the past 3 months I’ve been on a strict ketogenic diet and I feel like a million dollars and I wished I had this information 7 years ago. The we don’t even consider diet clinically for any condition is insane. I hope we are on the path to change

I don't know wether or not you read comments, BUT:
I've been in ketosis for about 4 to 5 months, and I started it due to all sorts of mental health issues (ADHD, aspergers, etc.) and other physical issues, such as arthritis.
I have a super sever misophonia (selective sound syndrome - certain noises trigger a super fight or flight effect), the worst I've seen. I was extremely surprised to find out that my misophoia symptoms, which have been super severe throughout my ALL life, have become more manageable. Earlier I would get super adrenaline rush if I were to hear childrens noises in a store, etc., but while I still find those sounds annoying, the reaction I have is much more reasonable. I just feel mildly annoyed and move on. I'm not engulfed with rage, like I used to be. The difference is EXTREME. I'm mind blown. It's been so bad to the point where I've occasionally fantasized about deliberately going deaf (although not since I found out that you are more prone to develop neurodegenrative disease if you don't use hearing aids).
There aren't many studies on misophonia, but when you read through them, this is what they describe misophonia as:
The literature suggests that the majority of patients with misophonia have normal hearing sensitivity (Schroder et al., 2014), while the limbic and autonomic nervous systems are in a heightened state of excitation and thus react abnormally to normal auditory input (Moller, 2011).
And when you read about epilepsy, you can find lots of literature about epilepsy and hyperexcitability of the brain.
Anyway, thanks for your work! I'm on a ketogenic diet which is pretty carnivore heavy. Feeling better than ever. It feels like I've been pumped up speed and testosterone. Feels absolutely good man. Never been in this good shape.

@@TheMJT515 I can’t of course know if we are talking about the same issue, but since I could walk I always left tables if other people were eating. I never ate with my family as a child, I never went out to eat - just stayed home. They knew how bad it was. They knew I couldnt eat, Id just hold my ears. Couldnt sleep in the same room as my brother due to him literally just breathing quietly. I sleep with earplugs and these hearing protections, I spend all day with either earplugs on or with noise cancelling headphones. Couldnt use public transportation due to noise from other people. Had to drop out of numerous classes in university and high school due to either disturbing sounds during the class or the teacher speaking in a weird way where they make mouth sounds.
When I expand on the range of problems Ive dealt with with misophonia, people usually realize their mild annoyance towards a certain sound is nothing compared to the hell Ive had to deal with. :D Not to undermine yout struggle, of course, but mine definitely wasnt caused by a b12 deficinecy.
MTHFR polymorphisms, which many of us have, can cause toxic overload leading to all sorts of sensory & mood issues. Keto & carnivore lifestyles work wonders for us. Adding some Methylfolate & methylated B12 to our daily regimen is life changing as well. I’m so glad you’re getting so much relief! ❤

I just realized that Steve Newport is a kid I went to school with in Cincinnati, actually he was my first grade crush! I do remember an article about him in the paper several years ago. Thank you Mary for sharing your incredible story...I myself have been following a keto diet for a few years, and have been using the MCT8 oil every day also for several years, and I notice a definite brain function improvement. My husband had an accident 10 years ago to his head,very serious, and I noticed mental decline in the ensuing years. About 5 years ago I started him on the oil, but now I see the dose needs to be increased some. It definitely has helped.

My father died in 2014 of Alzheimer's. He was extremely active. He had a PhD in exercise and recreation, ran the fitness program for staff at the University of Alberta in the '70s, '80s and '90s. He used to organize fun runs, public skating events, and seniors fitness activities. He was diagnosed T2D back in 1967 at the age of 38, and on insulin by 42. He was a staunch believer of CICO and was always promoting diet and fitness as the solution to obesity. He always talked about the concept of reduced morbidity, i.e. being healthy for most of your life and not lingering for years in an extended care ward. Ironically, he started showing signs of dementia in his mid-fifties (we didn't realize it at the time). He ate a (high carb) SAD, and enjoyed a daily drink or two. His Alzheimer's got to the point where he was placed in extended care in 2007, where he spent the last 7 years of his life. Very sad.
That is a sad story. I'm sorry to hear about your loss, and his loss of quality years. Hopefully the message from Mary, Amy Berger, Matthew Phillips, and others will help prevent these stories for others.
Very sad indeed I had to put my mum in a home 1yr ago after a stroke which has turned into the start of Dementia. I am researching MCT for my seizures started after a head injury in 2004 so have to try & get myself well first but will look into this diet for mum too.

I recently watched a webinar by Dr. Bert Berkson on alpha lipoic acid. Pretty incredible against cancer.
After listening to a lecture by Mary Newport many months ago, I dragged out our heavy juicer (one with an auger) and found I could cold press coconut oil and "cream" from dried coconut. It is a superior product to the coconut oil we had been buying.
After extracing the oil, we make milk by running the fiber through two more times. I use the very pure leftover white fiber on meatloaf and as partial flour substitute for baking.

If it's standard coconut cream that contains a lot of sugar (carbs) then it would be contraindicated for keto, esp a keto diet. But then so is putting MCT or coconut oil in oatmeal as she did. But she probably didn't realize this back then.

I'm 68, and am starting to have issues with my memory more frequently, but the Weirdest thing happened when my husband and I went to my favorite breakfast restaurant, and I knew I was going to ask for my usual omelet, but instead I asked for a pizza with with veggies and cheese, my husband and the waitress looked at me strangely, so I repeated verbatim, not understanding why they don't understand, the waitress said we don't have pizza, I looked at my husband and asked, "did I say pizza?" and he affirmed I did...I think I'm in trouble but I'm so thankful I'm seeing these videos, I just got back from the store and bought some organic MCT oil, We keep organic coconut oil on hand anyway but I haven't been using it much lately, that changes today for my husband and I.

It seems to me that people are not angry enough with the medical establishment. How can it be that so much ignorance and incompetence is not on purpose?
It seems to me that the medical establishment has been bought by the pharma corporations. I see this in the two nursing homes I have been in. They both will not change their dietary plan from high carbs and sugars to keto. They both prefer to give out pills. I am looked down on when I tell them I don't want their pills. They think something is wrong with me. I tell them I have read and heard a huge amount of information about the harmful effects of sugar and carbs that turn into sugar. I asked them to feed me organic raw foods but they would not. They stuck to the story that they were serving very healthy meals.
I found articles about the kick backs nursing homes are receiving from pharma.
Here is one story:
The nation’s largest nursing home pharmacy, Omnicare Inc., has agreed to pay $28.125 million to resolve allegations that it solicited and received kickbacks from pharmaceutical manufacturer Abbott Laboratories in exchange for promoting the prescription drug, Depakote, for nursing home patients. CVS Health Corporation, which is headquartered in Rhode Island, acquired Ohio-based Omnicare in 2015, approximately six years after Omnicare ended the conduct that gave rise to the settlement.
“Every day, elderly nursing home residents suffering from dementia rely on the independent judgment of our nation’s healthcare professionals for their personal care and their medical treatment,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer, head of the Department of Justice’s Civil Division. “Kickbacks to entities making drug recommendations compromise their independence and undermine their role in protecting nursing home residents from the use of unnecessary drugs.”
Nursing homes rely on consultant pharmacists, such as those employed by Omnicare, to review their residents’ medical charts at least monthly and make recommendations to their physicians about what drugs should be prescribed for those residents. The settlement announced today resolves allegations that Omnicare solicited and received kickbacks from Abbott in exchange for recommending that physicians prescribe Depakote, an anti-epileptic drug manufactured by Abbott, to elderly nursing home residents.
According to the government’s complaint, Omnicare disguised the kickbacks it received from Abbott in a variety of ways. Abbott allegedly made payments to Omnicare described as “grants” and “educational funding,” even though their true purpose was to induce Omnicare to recommend Depakote. For example, Omnicare allegedly solicited substantial contributions from Abbott and other pharmaceutical manufacturers to its “Re*View” program. Although Omnicare claimed that Re*View was a “health management” and “educational” program, the complaint alleges that it was simply a means by which Omnicare solicited kickbacks from pharmaceutical manufacturers in exchange for increasing the utilization of their drugs on elderly nursing home residents. In internal documents, Omnicare allegedly referred to Re*View as its “one extra script per patient” program. The complaint also alleges that Omnicare entered into agreements with Abbott by which Omnicare was entitled to increasing levels of rebates from Abbott based on the number of nursing home residents serviced and the amount of Depakote prescribed per resident. Finally, the complaint alleges that Abbott funded Omnicare management meetings on Amelia Island, Florida, offered tickets to sporting events to Omnicare management and made other payments to local Omnicare pharmacies.
In May 2012, the United States, numerous states and Abbott entered into a $1.5 billion global civil and criminal resolution that, among other things, resolved Abbott’s liability under the False Claims Act for alleged kickbacks to nursing home pharmacies, including Omnicare and PharMerica Corp. In October 2015, PharMerica agreed to pay $9.25 million to the United States and numerous states to resolve civil liability under the False Claims Act for the alleged kickbacks from Abbott. The settlement announced today resolves Omnicare’s role in that alleged kickback scheme.
“This settlement ensures that some of the most vulnerable amongst us, those suffering from dementia, are provided with the level of care they deserve,” said U.S. Attorney John P. Fishwick Jr. for the Western District of Virginia. “Families and loved ones who make the difficult decision to place those they care about into a nursing home must do so with the confidence that medical decisions are being made with the interests of the patient in mind, not big drug companies.”
Approximately $20.3 million of the settlement will go to the United States, while $7.8 million has been allocated to cover Medicaid program claims by states that elect to participate in the settlement. The Medicaid program is jointly funded by the federal and state governments. continued...........

Being a fat adapted fat burner producing ketones IMO is the best way to prevent AD. I believe ketones are REQUIRED to feed our big brains for brain health from birth. I am counting on my ketones. I experimented with my diet to try and find what worked best for my sleep disorder - narcolepsy. I didn't know about keto, but after some trial and error started low carb/high fat dieting. I really have to be very low in carbs though, and I don't do well without a large percentage of my diet in fat. I haven't done much with MCT oil, although I've tried it. I use coconut oil but I feel like I've missed a trick here. I haven't given it the prominence it probably needs in my situation. I have been keto about half my life now I feel I'm better off in general health because of it. My mother developed dementia, and I wouldn't say mild, but she was not evaluated medically. She lives with me, and I asked her to go on the ketogenic diet with me. She has recovered by leaps and bounds, praise God. I found this discussion to be extremely interesting, and feel that yes, the ketogenic diet is practically a miracle for us, but I need to look more carefully at coconut oil and MCT oil. I think there may be some virtue to the use of both and probably try to be consistent with it and use it more routinely like a medicine. Thanks for a great video and all your efforts. My horizons have been expanded.
Helen, try carrington farms liquid organic coconut oil….. it is easy to eat a tablespoon with each meal since it is a liquid.
Also avoid eating aluminum, dr Chris exley explains that aluminum is found in very very high levels in the BRAINS of folks that died from Alzheimer’s.
Study dr Chris exley, ( and study dr Mary Newport) he tells us that drinking Fiji water removes aluminum from your brain.

Again God led me to new and exciting information. I’m currently intermittent fasting, I’ve given myself a 4 hour window of eating. I believed from my wandering of the internet that healthy oils were essential for a healthy brain. I started taking MCT oil because it can help put the body into ketosis along with a low carb diet. Im a vegetarian getting my oils from nuts and seeds along with MCT oil. I’ve had to stumble upon all this new(to me) information , anyway here I’m listening to your testimony and glad you found each other. I started off just wanting to lose weight lol.

I've lost two parents to Alzheimer's. My mother in law first, before any of us knew about the diet connection. My mom second, but my little sister jumped in hard on her diet. My mom lived much longer on keto/low carb than my mother in law who was on the Standard American Diet. Go figure!

A marvelous podcast. Been following Dr Scher (DietDoctor) for a couple of years now. And Dr Westman as well. Here in the UK doctors do not like informed patients, at all at all (I’m Irish so at all at all is a qualifier in any sentence). I have got off statins and lost the weight gain with my own research and my confidence that the Keto/low carb diet, way makes more sense that the conventional treatment. Muscle pain has gone, although I feel that Statins wrecked my metabolism. So I’m all in for this information. Been a bit concerned that coconut oil might be deleterious for cardiac health so keep it to two teaspoons a day. I think I may become more adventurous, go a bit wild with it.
Am wondering if the low carb/high fat diet is a good general diet for health maintenance and an insurance against modern day health decline.

look up Public Health Collaboration UK and Dr David Unwin... you may be find that more than two teaspoons of coconut oil per day feeds your heart muscles... or at least the ketones feed your heart muscles, look up Dr William Davis and Dr Aseem Malhotra for information on how.

I purchased some refined coconut oil from Pr uvit brand after watching some of the research a few years ago. I was also using Melrose Brand in a brown glass bottle about six years ago ... a few drops not a teaspoon amount would loosen my bowels...

My wife has Alzheimer's! She's on a drug trial that will last 3-years (Semaglutide). I've been on the ketogenic (keto) diet for 3-weeks now, plus 3-day fasting's, plus working out in a weight gym, every other day. Feel great. I'm 80 incidentally. My wife will begin her keto diet tomorrow, plus coconut oil, plus mct oil. Will try to get her down the gym too? We are both taking a moratorium from alcohol. Keep you posted...

I would like to ask if her husband Steve continued taking Aricept and Namenda after starting the coconut oil. My wife takes Aricept, we stopped the Namenda, and we've started the coconut oil and MCT oil, so I'm wondering if we should stop taking Aricept.
Arricept is on the list of anticholinergics that cause brain damage...so very ironic as it is prescribed for alzheimers! I quit taking it for mild cognitive impairment and started mct oil. Remarkably, my memory improved to the point that I could finish a sentence without stammering. I urge you to try it!

I wonder if high vitamin D about 10,000 i.u. 3-4 times per day with the keto diet would have helped with the seizures since high D has been used in seizure patients who cannot tolerate anti seizure meds.
Some anti seizure meds such as oxcarbazepine up-regulate TRPV1 an incretin that causes hyperinsulinemia and with the up-regulation of TRPV1 puts glucose into cells independent of insulin and the insulin receptor that leads to excess ROS and inflammation. So D with its antiinflammatory ability would likely help in that way.

I discovered the miracle of a ketone diet with my 93 year mother's mild cognitive impairment. She woke up from the 6-8 hour naps and became present once again. Sadly, I had to move for work and the remaining family were too ignorant to apply the strategies I used. So, of course she went the way most with dementia go - downhill.
These days I am following Dr. Bredesen and Apollo health who have a greater voice in getting the word out about simple lifestyle changes to avoid what many believe are factors related to growing old. Another discovery, photobiomodulation or red light therapy (RLT) fixed my foggy brain related to long Covid or grief from losses. It would be interesting to hear what Dr. Newport thinks about RLT as it works on the mitochondria to improve ATP and consequently cellular energy.
What strategies did you use?
I walked very softly as my sibs might whine. I put her on a keto diet and prepared all her food especially when she asked for favorites.
I tried MCT oil in her coffee and subjectively noticed her sharper with MCT.
She wasn’t doing much physical activity or fasting.

Maybe. Do you have a glucose meter? Measure your glucose after 1 hr after eating and that will tell you if you're eating too much carbs. Somewhere around 125-150 you're in prediabetic/diabetic range. Preferably you want to keep your glucose under 125. You'll have to experiment with what you eat to really understand what food affects what ways. Fruit is hight in carbs, but does have fiber in it to blunt some of the effects of the sugars in them. However, fruit has a lot of fructose which isn't that great for you in my opinion.
Avoid fruits.
Keto, carnivore, or a combo ketovoir. No fruit, no or very low carbs. Check out Dr Ken Berry's channel. He does a Q&A every Monday at 7 pm ET.
Cut out the fruits totally. If you are not vegetarian eat lots of meat. No sugar, no flour, no potato, no rice, no processed foods. Listen to all the keto/low carb expert doctors on youtube.

How about aluminium toxicity.
Avoid vaccines, especially flu shot. Drink silica rich water (look up Dr. Christopher Exley), sauna on a regular basis. Don't use aluminum cookware or antiperspirants

Most people find they cant get above 3 mmol/L with diet and exerciser alone. With fasting some can get as high as 5. But most experts don't recommend going above that, although it is very challenging to do anyway, so for most people it isn't an issue.

But today 80% of people are metabolically compromised. And in this case medications may not be the right thing to do. Another paradigm which is difficult to abandon is the ill to the pill.

How old is she? It can also be menopause. I was having serious issues with my words and also memory, went on hrt and i was okay within 3 days. Loss of estrogen affects the brain. If she is more than 10 years out from menopause, it might be too late. If earlier, the estrogen helps a lot.

My brain feels foggy but not memory
The Mediterranean diet is good but not optimum. If you are serious about your metabolic health go on a low carb high fat or ketogenic diet. Even a carnivore diet is very good because you will be in ketosis without taking oil.
Isn't butter better than coconut oil? Or how about three strips of bacon? I understand that coconut oil is not toxic. The same thing goes for olive oil. We know that canola and cotton seed are toxic. But why not just eliminate all vegetable oils? There are so many vitamins and minerals in butter, you can almost live on it.
If you are a caregiver, you could easily put a person on two meals a day. Put any carbs in the first meal and maybe zero carbs in the second. That way, you could probably eliminate the need for keytone esters.
Thanks for your comment. If someone is struggling to get into ketosis, or is in ketosis and wants to bump up their ketone levels, then MCT/coconut can help as they are more efficiently metabolized into ketones. But, from a keto diet standpoint, butter is obviously a good choice.
MCT and Coconut Oil are liquid at body temperature; Bacon, not so much.
So I imagine any arterial clogging would be reduced.

There’s also different types of MCT oil which you could try. I’ve also had better luck with MCT oil combined with keytones & electrolytes packets like “real keytones” brand.
I love your podcasts. One suggestion not related to the content: Your videos have an insane amount of dynamic compression on the audio that makes for an abrasive listening experience. My ears become fatigued within the first five minutes. Try relaxing the compression and tame the sibilance.
