- One Shot is a crazy new strategy in Minecraft speedrunning that allows the player to kill the ender dragon with just one arrow shot. This has led to by far the fastest runs in Minecraft speedrunning history. Since oneshot was discovered, there have been 5 new SSG world records, bringing the record from 1:47 to 1:04. It is absolutely insane that after around a decade of fighting this same ender dragon, players have discovered a Death Star weak point in it
Also it's very similar to the death of Smaug in the Hobbit. Perfect arrow through the small weak point from a random lucky guy shooting a bow

I hope this get more respect to Curcuit and Tas runs in general, while people focus on the speedrunners the science behind the run is crazy important

Yeah, Like in SMB1. If TASing didn't exist, we might not have ever found FPG or 1-2G(And if someone did it by accident, they probably wouldn't think to much about it). And without people diving deep into the game, we wouldn't have run viable setups for tricks like Fast 4-2 fr/l4-2, PL8-1, TAS 8-2, you get the point

it is by definition not a glitch. The result is not intended by the devs (oneshotting the dragon), but all the mechanics are working as intended. Just like a minecraft iron farm is not a glitch nor a bug, just thoughtful application of the iron golem spawn mechanic.

What an incredible person Curcuit is. Giving away this tech to the community she put so much work in because she didn't want to delay progress on the run because she wouldn't be able to make attempts for a period of time.

Massive respect to Curcuit, she could have not posted the best route, and just waited until she could be the first to get the run, but she sacrificed that chance for the better of the community. Given how prevalent inflated egos are in the speedrunning world, her actions are incredibly humbling

It's so funny that the mouth on the Omegalul emote has been made bigger so many times that you can send what's basically just a circle with an outline (5:14) and everyone knows what it means

You can also get this server momentum by the player standing on ghost blocks such as when placing scaffolding and shooting downwards. We showed how it could be used to one shot most things after 1.14. Though it was a few hits to kill the dragon. Not sure why the speed running community only started using server momentum recently. Maybe they thought it was a glitch.

I would assume they saw the ghost block and classified it as a glitch and never gave the idea any more thought. Still interesting to see a mechanic in the game be taken so far though

In the exploiting community the arrow speed bug has been known for a while at this point. There have been multiple mods that simulate incredibly fast player movements in order to achieve the arrow velocity high enough to one shot a player. Im surprised an interpretation of it has been found in speedruning
Maybe the exploit and speedrun communities should talk more often XD
There have also been redstone machines that use this method, by charging the arrow with velocity from TNT dupers, people have used this mechanic to one shot Withers and Wardens!
People knew about arrow velocity plenty; the problem was the difficulty of getting said high velocity.
Considering the category is set seed glitchless, I’m curious how far this will go on whether it counts as a glitch or not, since it’s obviously not intended to be able to oneshot the dragon.

You'd also have to optimize it for 1.16 somehow, since nobody's playing 1.12 for fastest RSG world record no matter how fast the end fight is. It'd be very cool if it turns out to be possible and also be faster than what already exists for the version. But I can't see a world where it converts a 7:45 into a sub 7. 7:30 maybe.
Remember that less than half of the savings on the SSG WR vs the 1.16 route is from the end fight. Most of the time save is from being able to make use of 1.12's spawn displacement in a full run. The seed had been used before to enter end within seconds, as shown in the video, but before one-shot there was no way to kill the dragon once you were there.

the 1.16 dragon behaves differently, so it wouldn’t be possible. maybe as a faster zero-cycle method, but definitely not worth it to risk it on record pace

Though I will not lie this is probably inspired by SummoningSalt, speed-running has a very deep history that ranges over a decade, therefor, videos discussing that history have existed for a long time. SummoningSalt was not the first to do these types of videos, just one of the more popular & concisely put. To compare every video essayist that covers speedruns is redundant.
SSG was always new records by margins of fractions of seconds, basically just mechanically optimized reruns of similar seeds, a time margin of this much is insane to think about
and then a day after this, hanabi broke the one minute barrier. absolutely insane developments in this category, so exciting!

It's only a matter of time until this gets into random seed speedruns... Removing the requirement of a village entirely as well as removing the time to grab all the beds is going to be a huge boost of speed in randoms too, once people start pulling it off...

This stuff is crazy, and always makes me wonder what would happen if I had gotten into speed running at a young age.
My and my friends were playing Minecraft as dumb little kids and never understood how we damaged the dragon for half its health in a single shot. we chopped it up to a glitch, or an intended feature as we didn't understand any mechanics, but watching this video explains everything.

i'm in absolute shock that something like this happened, just after watching a video on a (formerly) new 1.16 ssg seed taking like a second off the wr. truly incredible. thank you curcuit for making this possible, i'm always very fascinated with tech-y math weirdos
i got 160+ damage w/ no setup 1.9- 1.12 ssgp after keima's run, i think that's second-most no setup damage (excluding keima's other attempts heh)

I had been noticing in some Minecraft manhunts the runner or hunter’s e pearl would get launched in a seemingly random way. This is probably the reason thats been happening. Nice vid btw.

@@orang9134you can still do it, however it is considered a glitch. This strategy is still used in glitches runs.
@@orang9134 Technically that counts, but you don't kill the dragon, you just prevent it from spawning so I dont think it counts as killing the dragon.

I don't know if I really like this strat even if it saves much time. It really feels like we returned to the gravel seed times and wr's were games of chance. Now it's going to be much more difficult and frustrating to beat a wr or any pb because of the 2.5% to 5% chances of hitting the one arrow
This version of the game is notoriously easier too
Yeah but SSG is such a short run that 2.5% isn't really that bad.
There's hour long speed runs with a mandatory 2% chance move near the end in some communities.

17:46 I have seen more unlikely stuff in speedruns. Though it wasn't in Minecraft.
It's the SM64 TTC Upwarp, there is still an unclaimed 8 year old bounty for $1000 that is looking for someone to find out how to reproduce the glitch.
The most likely explanation of how it happened that I've heard is that a cosmic ray randomly hit the player's computer and flipped one of the bits that indicated Mario's height position.
There is a good video on this by Veritasium called "The Universe is Hostile to Computers". (There are also other good videos on the topic)
