I have been a drummer most of my life and this has got to be hands down one of the hardest rhythm signatures I have ever tried to tackle. Gavin has 3 different timings going on with the high hat snare and kick drum. Pure genius.
@@DavidFloegelDrums For the hihat it is. :D Kick drum and snare do a 5/8 thing twice, which is extended to a 6/8 figure the 3rd time around. Trickiest thing (for me) is the ghost notes, though (best heard/seen here ua-cam.com/video/ZuYjGfaixDM/v-deo.html. 2:00-2:30). And the double bassdrum stuff. Incorporating that into this particular beat, I mean.
@@DavidFloegelDrums Your response reads very confusing. Since I'm not sure, where you're coming from, here's my thoughts: 1) I'm describing the beat you were asking about. If it sounds difficult to you, then it seems you consider it to be difficult. There's no way for me to make it anything more or less than it already is. I can tell you one thing, though. It's a lot more difficult to play than it is to hear, describe or read a description of. 2) It doesn't matter what I or you or Porcupine Tree consider the time to be. Whether or not it's in 4/4 is a) hardly up to discussion, 'cause pretty much anyone can identify a 4/4 when they hear it and b) totally and utterly unrelated to whether or not it is difficult. Most Meshuggah tracks are in 4/4, yet noone would seriously argue that going into detail about the rhythmic groups guitars, bass and drums are playing, would be "making it more difficult than it is". If a figure is in 5/8, saying it's in 5/8 isn't making anything into anything. Either you think odd groups within 4/4 is difficult to hear, play oder understand, or you don't. But me pointing out what it is, doesn't have a say in it. 3) So, yes it's in 4/4, obviously. But it's not "just" 4/4, obviously. Because that would imply something like this ua-cam.com/video/8ceiFrrHlbI/v-deo.html
@@puppetofmasters i did actually do a small snippet of that tune somewhere on my channel 🙃 I agree with you on the kick doing a 5/8+5/8+6/8 - I just don't think of it as such. But of course everyone can think of patterns the way it works best for them!
@Joseph Knecht Oh I love Jordan for his excesses, he's such a crafty embellisher, I'd compare his style to the rococo era decorations (beautiful for the sake of beauty) RB's gleaming sound is coming from another dimension, it's not even beautiful - it's transcendent.
Amazing band. I actually have to thank Mike Portnoy for getting me into PT. He listed Fear of a Blank Planet as one of his favorite albums. I checked it out and got addicted immediately. :D
I'm another 50ish rocker, though I've been into PT about 10 years. I was searching for good buys on ebay. Kept seeing this strange name, Porcupine Tree. Man am I glad I was curious!
Mr. and Mr. Toolmusicians, you should not worry, having Mr. Carey keeping things in (calculated dis-)order in your camp. And knowing Gavin is now in KC (saw him twice with both bands) I recall having heard Danny doing Red with KC. Love Tool as well, keep it up!

@MrShelo09 It's on the bonus disk of Deadwing, along with So-Called Friend (also on this dvd), Half Light (on the Anesthetize dvd), Revenant, and a rendition of Shesmovdeon from Lightbulb Sun.
i am 54 years young and never heard music like this... fucking amazing!
I'm 60 and I'm thrilled too )))
The later you discover PT the better. I was 20 when I discovered them. Now I'm like28 and finding it hard to find a band that can top them.

Richard Barbieri's keyboard sounds are melodies are what adds real atmosphere to a lot of Porcupine Tree tracks ... its subtle but so effective.
Daniel Verberne absolutely!
Absolutely. I love his subliminal tones and directions and nudges and licks and labyrinths - he is the proverbial icing in the misery cake.
the double bass fills...

I love everything by Porcupine Tree, even the way that Steven moves his hair while he's playing guitar, ahhhhh.
ohh yess!!
You Fuckin spoke my mind!!
Especially that !!
Here for the thumbnail so I guess i'm specially here for the hair.
Love how we all love Steven's hair. 😆
One of the best live acts you will EVER see.
Amazing band. I actually have to thank Mike Portnoy for getting me into PT. He listed Fear of a Blank Planet as one of his favorite albums. I checked it out and got addicted immediately. :D
This is the most Goddamned supergroup!!
Probably one of those Bands who can sound better when performing live than in studio.
Agree
And not probably! Thats a fact...
Не лучше, но и не хуже. Просто великолепно!!!
The reflection in Richard's glasses at 0:12 = pure badass :D
I love this. My favorite band of all time.
+Mauricio Ibáñez Same!!
Like the space between atoms in a neutron star, this band is tight.
Steven's guitar tones are seriously unreal
One of the best bands ever!! Great riffs full of melody. Wow
1:25 ... that drum fill definitely breaks some laws of physics
That bass is killer....

I just can't believe how good this stuff is...
Amazing !!! Saw this live in Houston
Prog Masters
This is insanely good. The time signature is impossibly complex.
It doesn't get any better than this.
Don't let it scare you . . . . let it INSPIRE you!
I have a mancrush on Gavin Harrison

Frake Onas me too. Secret man-crush.
Frake Onas 😂😂😂😂
Gavin is a monster!
People who don't have something inherently wrong in them
one of their best songs.
and to think I thought Tom Sawyer was difficult to play on the drums. By far, my favorite band. Just incredible.
Phenomenal band ever.
Just love the end with the toms it s fantastic
Mamma mia ❤
Tight. Excellent musicians. Love Gavin's timing.
Hermoso... I miss you guys... :(
Crazy ghost notes by Mr Harrison. Crazy rhythmic session
Fucking hell. That rhythm section is balls to the wall hard to play on drums. Harrison isn’t human
Gavin f**king Harrison :)
✌💪
That 5 on the snare WTF!

The main riff will get stuck in my head for literally months. I can't listen often. Great track.

Superb. One of The Trees finest aural creations, gets the kundalini flowing up and down the spine each time it is heard.

June 2022!
That Sonor kit sounds so good, I wanna EAT IT
Why haven't I heard this band before?!
excelenteeee!!!!
Took me a while to realize this, but you can definitely hear the middle section of Meshuggah's "Soul Burn" in this song's main riff.
Sickest instrumental ever
Love PT and Rush,Gavins face is great at 2:41!
ABSOLUTELY PROGRESSIVE..................
+Ardillez barullo ikr... porcupine tree is the definition of progressive in my opinion ^^

Gavin so cool, that Fripp take man to see him as 3 drummer )
That snare sounds so fucking awesome and tight and perfect and epic and amazing!! :-D
Rohan Barbade You should check his lessons and tuning techniques!
Awesome ! Hot like Rush !
3:04 Gunshots are being fired, GAVIN DUCK!
3:04 Every now and then Gavin needs a break from his Godliness.
No. The drums need a break from him.
The opening riff reminds me a lot of Rush's "YYZ."
GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEn i a l .............................
The best madaf_cking band on this planet!!!
SW's Grace for Drowning is even more awsome!
Gavin Harrison's drumming ability frankly scares me.
ladies and gentlmen gavin fucking harrison
I think this is the sound checks going on..and GAVIN THE DRUMMER HARRISON..
Colin is always happy, lol
a dir poco geniale
This is from "Deadwing" DVD-A edition
It's not on the proper release of an album, it's on some kind of a special/limited version of Deadwing I think.
This song is brutal.something like mistery dramatic hatred!!
Anyone else reckon the opening riff is in 16/8? Sounds like two bars of 5 and one of 6?
@Epsilon346 Thank you bro! ;)
Man, this should be the soundtrack of a fistfight for the faith of the universe.
Barbieri, Edwin and Wesley are the other 100%
Sounds so much like something King Crimson should have done!
You can probably change the video description, since the audio is not out of sync or dodgy.
If you hear this song for the first time, you might think "what the fuck just happened?!"
