This man is God of the guitar. This solo will stay forever its beyond words really. I have tried to play it on my homemade black strat but at 65 the fingers are arthritic and Im a crap guitarist. Thank you Dave Gilmour for this unique mind blowing solo it will go down in history no one can ever repeat it the way you do❤️❤️❤️❤️
Keep playing brother. I’m 72 and I always strive to be better. Been playing since 1964. I’ve gotten as close to this solo as I’ll probably ever get and I’m pretty damn close. Close as I’ll ever get but I sound damn good because I play it MY WAY! You are unique in your own way. Play it like it’s your last day on this Earth!!!
David is living proof that you don't have to be a shredder to be a great guitarist. His greatness lies in his consummate ability to connect with his audience emotionally through the simplicity of his playing. That does not mean it is easy. That kind of connecting takes spectacular skill, which he has. Thank you for the music, David. It's been a long, amazing ride.
I'm 68, my son bought us tickets to David's world simulcast of this Pompeii concert. We watched it together at the cinema, my son became a Floyd & David convert instantly. He still talks about this solo. Thanks David for bringing new generations to your music.
I have been listening to Pink Floyd since 70 and never get tired of them and his solo on the PULSE album gives me goose bumps and still bring a tear to my eyes after all these years
Isn't it great how many renditions we have of this song and guitar solo - and they're all different!!! If this one is more soulfull, I see the Pulse version as more bluesy. And the Gdansk version perhaps as more ethereal. And so on :) One of these days I'm gonna make me a playlist, or a sampler, with all these versions !

His best live performance of Comfortably Numb is widely acknowledged as the Pulse concert at Earl's Court in London in 1994. Having watched this video, my opinion hasn't changed.
I was actually there that night and it was beyond legendary. However, having said that, I absolutely love his solo on the ORIGINAL Delicate Sound of Thunder CD. That's the first version I heard.

Truly amongst the greatest guitar players ever. Does not receive much credit. You always hear about Clapton, Paige, Hendricks, and Beck. But this guy! This guy wrote riffs and music that defined the soul of rock. The way he bent that string and held that notes. The melodic tunes and riffs that define a genre. Truly truly underrated

I was a sick young boy once upon a time, and this song ... no words. Nurses and doctors looked at me, I couldn't understand a word they said, so some of those lyrics just have held on to me. Step forward to you teens and a late, late night during the winter, coming home from a hockey practice, stars shining so bright they cast shadows on a snowy prairie, and behold, Comfortably Numb on the radio. Stopped and enjoyed before carrying on home. Love Live at Pompeii. Just wish the man a happy birthday!

I’m 73 and after I saw this performance I told my brother this is the best Comfortably Numb solo David ever did. I went and listened to all the others he did in the past, starting with The Wall and all the other tours that came after that, and this is the best!
Totally agree - But the second Pompeii appearance is verrrry close ....
Pulse version is better in my opinion
@@DanS1 Listen again this is the very BEST version!
You are indeed a lucky person
@@DanS1 The pulse version is as good I must agree. 😀
I'm 66 years old listend to this since it first came out love it now as well
hearing GILMORE IS A RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE
So true
Amen.
I'm 70 years old and have heard every guitarist from the 60's to the 2020's. My Fav guitarist of all time is David Gilmour. Pink Floyd is AWESOME!
Incredible performance - you can tell that everyone on stage (including Gilmore himself) knew something special was happening …
So true ! Have thought that several times after watching this!
Yes ! 👍
PS : its GILMOUR
@@olivier7779 Yes, of course - thanks for pointing that out! The perils of predictive text … 😉
@@derekclacton
Yes .. i know too.... 😉
You love him but can’t spell his name correctly?
I'm 70 and have enjoyed Floyd for 50 years and Gilmour never gets old! I believe even that old black Strat said "Holy Shit that was great" !!
for every 50 notes that ANY other guitarist uses, david gilmour uses 1 or 2, and still achieves the same if not MORE feel and emotion; the greatest living guitarist hands down.
In the mid 60s there was an explosion of creativity in British music.... we simply blew the world's mind...
That doesn’t mean Gilmour is a better guitarist
@@sharkmanyt4431 better than the most
@@eliotcfernandes 1 good note is better than 50 fast notes, but 50 good fast notes is better than 1, and there are players who can play way faster and have every note count just as much
@@sharkmanyt4431 well he is one of the greatest guitar player ever and he can sing pretty well.
I have heard a hundred versions of this song, and my God this man never plays that solo the same way twice. Pure improvisational genius.
Exactly
Truth! My Guitar Teacher said exactly the same thing when I was trying to learn it note-for-note 🤘
This has to be the most sarcastic comment ever. The last thing Gilmour does is improvise his solos, they are the same every night and very close to the record. You have to be having a laugh"
genio? ma cosa a ci vuole a improvvisare un assolo???? migliaia di chitarristi lo fanno...
@@alternativeglasto What are you smoking, they are never the same. The basic progression obviously is cause its the same song.
When someone is that good at something all you can do is sit and watch in respectful silence.
Unless you're at the concert, in person - then you apparently have to hold your cell phone in the air.
I love how happy his drummer is just to be there.
The drummer is still active doing early Floyd songs aided by Gary Kemp and friends under the name Saucerful of Secrets
Another example of how yesterday's music will always Rule!!
This is proof there is a heaven, where else could this perfect soul have come from!
I have been listening to Pink Floyd since 70 and never get tired of them and his solo on the PULSE album gives me goose bumps and still bring a tear to my eyes after all these years
The solo on Pulse is my favorite too.
That Pulse solo was a great air guitar experience.... Over and over..... Loved it.
Amen. Each time you hear the music it sounds new.
The Pulse version is by the far the best - pure melodic playing, and I've listened to it 100s of times to perfect it. 100% agree on this one!
Without question, one of Rocks' greatest moments. A Mount Rushmore performance by a all time artist at the top of his game.
50 + years of this man's iconic jamming and his Solo's still amaze me to this day. It will be a dark dark day when this man leaves us🎸👍❤️
I dread the day. Gilmour got me through some tough times.
@@beatbasher I'm glad to hear that that's what music does sometimes I would lay in a dark room put my headphones on and just listen to Pink Floyd or David Gilmour in the dark it was good therapy for me too
Me too brother! @@beatbasher
There is magic in that Black Strat
On that night the whole city was comfortably numb ❤
This music isn’t old. This music isn’t new. This music is always just right now.
Grandkids: _”Can grandpa come over and hang out with us tonight mom?”_
Mom: _”Sorry kids, grandpa is busy performing one of the greatest guitar solos of all time.”_
77 here AND STILL TOTALLY MOVES ME
2024....MASTERPIECE
Meraviglia della musica. 50 anni di storia avevo 20 anni e adesso oltre I 70 grazie di esistere..💯💯🇮🇹
Chills, goosebumps, tears in my eyes, that's what this song does to me, and I'm 54.❤
We all grew up in the best of times- 60’s-70’s-80’s!!! Think about it!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
He hasn’t changed in 50 years. Brilliant guitar work.
72 and bought tears to my eyes it's so good!
Hey a fellow 72 . Cool isn't it ? I feel so privileged knowing about Floyd and passing on my appreciation to my children and grand-children . (I only ...erm experienced them once . Selby abby's 900th Anniversary concert in '69) I was 8 feet away from David Gilmour !
The very best guitar performance ever
the hundreds of millions who've been consecrated in the immersive soul enriching, spirit cleansing music of David Gilmour have been forever inexorably enriched.
What I like most is how happy everyone is to play and how they smile. Great atmosphere not only in the audience but also on stage!
I m 56 and I m so Greatful I was introduced to Pink Floyd when I was about 15
His guitar speaks sings and screams what a legend🤯
His best live performance of Comfortably Numb is widely acknowledged as the Pulse concert at Earl's Court in London in 1994. Having watched this video, my opinion hasn't changed.
I was actually there that night and it was beyond legendary. However, having said that, I absolutely love his solo on the ORIGINAL Delicate Sound of Thunder CD. That's the first version I heard.
Live in gdansk is the best imo
@@iserz4474 agreed
I must agree. Comfortably Numb off of Pulse brought tears to my eyes. To me, best solo of all time from anyone
Widely acknowledged doesn’t mean it’s right. I prefer this one. But there’s one better still…
I'm 65...bought this album when it came out...absolutely wore it out!... but still have it and the stickers that came with...can't even begin to tell the memories that this music provokes....so glad younger generations are discovering it...
Best song and guitar solo ever played it brings me to tears every time I hear it, BEAUTIFUL
I'm leaving a comment here so we get reminded 1,000 years from now that guitarists like David Gilmour are the Gods of Rock.
A man with hands like a builder manages to produce the best guitar solo ever, he makes that Strat sing like an angel. The Guvnor, happy birthday
It’s the only reason I’ve not thrown my guitar on the bonfire. If mr shovel hands can make this sound, it gives me hope. He must have been a learner too! 😊
Boring pentatonic solo but fantastic player and great feel
The enormity of this song cannot be justified in words. It can only be felt in the soul
YES absolutely!
So much passion and heart felt guitar!
* those notes! 😂😂😂😂
One of the best leads by one of the greatest to ever play the instrument!
I'm 72 and lucky to have lived through the era of some of the greatestusic ever recorded and this solo shows just what a brilliant guitarist Gilmour is,never get sick of it
Absolutely, Fantastic master David Gilmour. Happy Birthday 06/03/2023...77 years old.
My Dad was a massive Floyd fan, I grew up on it, so so lucky.....that distinctive sound of Gilmour's guitar is like no other, literally sends shivers down my spine every time.
One of the most underrated Guitar players in History- FACT
R.I.P. DAD xx
My favorite guitarist playing the best solo ever!
My mom started me listening to pink Floyd pretty much since birth, I'm 34 now. She just bought my girlfriend and I tickets to see him live in LA this year. This man is responsible for most of the soundtrack of my childhood and I love that it's coming full circle into my early adulthood.
The thing I love about DavidGilmore, is that he is so cool with his ability and status. He looks like he’s just popped out to the shops on a Wednesday night. What a beautiful humble man. I remember rushing to the music store (as much as you could on public transport) to buy Dark Side of the Moon, and coming back and playing it over and over, what an absolute mind blowing era. If feel so fortunate to have grown up with this kind of musical influence. It has affected my life in immeasurable ways, still does!
Imagine being as old as he is and from the greatest band to grace us and he STILL plays it live! Not an unpowered guitar with a recording playing on the speakers. Fkn legend.
1:18 played this very late on Christmas Eve w two of my grandkids & their friend,,,,,we got a little teary…..fantastic music never dies! I’m 74, they are in their late 20’s….what a gift!
The greatest guitar solo from the greatest guitarist of all time.
I'm 68 and my 60's and 70's hippie brother was a huge musical influence on me. He turned me on to so much good music, including Pink Floyd. This song truly transports me back in time where I expanded my mind to new beginnings. To David Gilmore and David Porter. You guys ROCK! Thank you.
The best guitar solo of all time! Amazing
He's the only guitarist I've ever heard who makes his guitar cry which in turn makes this 64 year old man cry, he is a treasure and to me, the very best lead guitarist of all time. Personally I prefer the the lead of this song from Pulse but both were fantastic. Thanks for posting.
Queen’s Brian May is fantastic also! Built his own guitar and plays it like no one else!😊
Gary Moore is incredible as well!!
@@sharonmuntz1872 Imho, his guitar "tone" lacks depth & dimension. 🖤♠
David is on my Mt. Rushmore, but Santana can make it cry. The best is Gary Moore's Still have the Blues.
I"m 65 and all i can say about that performance is . Wow .
