The other thing about the Katana Mini for £99 is the two internal dip switches. You can thicken the tone up and up the gain. You don't have to but the amount of tones available with this, for the money, is ridiculous. Highly recommended.
To me the difference between boost pedals is quite subtle, especially if you're not in the room. Also as a user of the EP boost, it's a smashing pedal. I use it to add a little saturation and bass to my high gain, low bass, amps.
Super helpful to do the quick shoot-out at the end. I was leaning towards the Katana originally and after the back and forth, I dig the MXR and Xotic tonally. Definitely hard to hear differences on distortion so I'm glad this was run-through on clean!
In case it wasn't mentioned: I use boost to normalize the volume between humbucker and single coil guitars without having to touch the amp. So I dial in the tone with my Les Paul, then switch to my Tele and add the boost pedal to make the volume the same. This way, all the pedals that appear afterwards are pushed the same as well. (I use EP Booster or a low-compression setting on the Wampler EGO Comp)
The katana has some really great little extra settings inside too. Great pedal. The ebeneezer mosfet boost seems to suffer the same problem as many fet and mosfet boosts that have massive gain, the volume is a subtractive addition on the end of the circuit so you hear all the noise its amplifying and producing due to the gain in the preceeding design. Part of the magic maybe but you need a good power supply to make sure its not worsened again.
Bought the Foxpedal, for any of you reading this post who are curious (since it's one of the less well-known ones in the bunch). It's a really nice clean boost. One thing about mine, which maybe is true of all, maybe not, is that the lowest position of the knob is already a pretty substantial boost (in contrast with the MXR Micro Amp that gives you almost exactly unity gain with the knob at zero). This is fine. I'm considering using this one as my "start of the chain" boost that comes in front of my compressor and everything else, and using a Micro Amp at the end of the chain as the final volume boost.
My favorite boost is my Tumnus. Turn the gain all the way off and crank the volume and voila; superior clean boost. I even prefer that to a TS-9 in front of my Dual Recto.
Not at all an easy subject and a very worthwhile subject to feature. I discovered that, contrary to what I previously thought, I don`t much care for boost pedals that are really clean. Adding a boost with some colouration suits my taste much better. I eventually bought a Katana Mini and what tipped the scales is the internal extra boost and top cut switches. With 35 dB available the Katana will whack any amp really hard .... if wanted. As with all things it`s a case of yer pays yer money and makes yer choice. I really like the `shoot out` formula by the way.
Lee, based on what you've been describing, revisit the Tim Pierce pedal. The AMP side of that pedal [I believe] is exactly what you are looking for. With single coil guitars, into a Fender style amp, it fattens and emphasizes the characteristics of the tone more than "boosts." It is definitely an "on all the time" for my Strat into a Fender amp.
First of all, I LOVE the content you guys put together. This has quickly become one of my favorite channels. THANK YOU for all you do. One comment on the boost pedal shoot out. Boosting gain, naturally, introduces a certain amount of additional LOUDNESS. Often times we perceive something LOUDER to be better quality, or we sort of unconsciously prefer it. If we're to seriously compare 'tone' here, perhaps you could introduce a compressor at the end of the chain to achieve loudness matching between boost pedal on/off. Or perhaps volume match in video/audio post production so we can really observe the change in tone without the difference in level. Maybe in a follow up video! I personally would love to see a straight up tone comparison of the different pedals. Just a thought / opinion!
Pretty much everyone I know uses different pedals for boost functions. Whatever works for you… I like an Archer Ikon for fattening up Strats & Teles. No gain, volume slightly above unity, treble at unity. Also use a DOD 410 to >>reduce
My answer to "why don't you just change the EQ on the amp?" is because with a boost pedal, you are adding another circuit to the signal path. The combination of the two items achieves that desired tone. Of course you could add more gain stages to the amp itself but this is why pedals came to be in the first place. Way easier to add a pedal to the chain than add internal components to the amplifier. Also adds flexibility to swap between pedals for different outcomes as we're seeing on these shootout videos.
Lee, the EP booster has dip-switches inside it and by default, the bass boost is switched on so this is probably why the pedal sounded a bit "Bassy" to your ears. Great vid btw, cheers!
After several years of chasing over drives, distortion pedals, etc. for a good solid blues tone- a good boost and compressor pedal turned out to be the key to getting my amp to sound like I wanted- like I kept hearing other amps sound on UA-cam. Not just any boost works with my amp- for some reason most of the boosts I try created this sort of odd frying sound in the background- sounds weird. But I finally found one that worked- but still, just wasn't sounding quiet right. Then I tried putting a compressor pedal between the guitar and the boost pedal- bingo. Clears out a lot of the low-end frequencies that were causing the issue- plus it adds these really cool over tones and harmonics- perfect. I don't like the loss of dynamics but, so far this is the only way I've gotten my amp to produce what I call the "Hendrix" tone- that edge of breakup tone with all the complex harmonics and overtones. Now If there was just some way to maintain this tone without losing my dynamics so much. Blues really counts on dynamics- being able to stress certain notes and play others very softly is really important. If anyone can help- I would appreciate it greatly.
Believe it or not, try using a fuzz face pedal ,but use the volume knob on your strat to lower the amount of distortion, but still have really nice sustain and harmonics. This is what hendrix used to do. It needs to be a valve amp your using.
Suprised that Capt. Lee did not have the Lovepedal twin sixty boost pedal. It has two boost that are exactly the same. You set them at different levels and have one on all the time and switch to second one for leads it works great.
You do know there is a switch inside of the katana that adds a little grit/overdrive just enough to like the perfect amount I can def see why john mayer uses it and man does it not have the modt perfect amount of snap to it zi kove it absolutely love it
I don't get boosts. They boost volume. To most listeners, louder means better. What else is going on in the non-overdrive section? Subtle compression and sustain? Is that where the magic happens?
I'm using LPB-1 that was rejected here ;). I love it because it cuts a bit of treble and adds more mids and as much as I love bright cleans sounds I hate bright overdriven sounds. The only cone of LPB-1 is 1 control knob, so you either drive amp with it by putting it in line or making it volume boost for solos and stuff by putting it in a loop.
My problem with the close miked dry sound is that you cant hear what the amp sound in the room as a person? This isnt a commercial recording you are making, i want more room mic blended in so i get an better idea how it responds in a room, we are guitarists afterall right? Because when you say its had too much added bass end it just seems a little bass shy on my end, the room adding lots of bass naturally we cant hear when closed miked? btw im listening with great monitors in a treated room just for reference, not phone speakers or buds. just my 2 cents you know peace
They should make a video about getting the best pedals sounding the worst possible and the worst pedals sound the best they possibly can just for shits and giggles
the thing im not liking about these shootout vids (like the OD vid w/Rob) is that Lee messes with the knobs too much and doesnt give the player a chance to hear a sound he likes so that he can compare the rest with. Either the knobs should all stay at 12 o'clock or they should be pre-setup with a sound the player likes and then start picking "the best".
I think they should do this again but try a different guitar. Maybe a les paul or prs. I could be wrong but I think the guitar and the type of pickups used would make a difference.
Well that made things clear .... go to Andertons and try every pedal they have in an exhaustive test and just enjoy your time well spent and happy that you've been methodical about the whole thing. MXR for me...
The EP Booster does not have a "bass boost" dipswitch. And it makes it name on being a bass and treble enhancer. Try it out. It' great, unless you don't want more bass.

Hi Guys, Hi Andertons! I know it has been almost 3 years since you did this video, but I am wondering if you have any thoughts about Suhr Kokoboost with those exact same amps. Cheers
I have a question for Lee, unrelated to this video. I delved into the rich Andertons archive of gorgeous videos and found the story about Lee's white strat that inspired the CAP10. Now I know there's two guitars, I always thought there was one. I liked that blue man logo on the guitar that once was there and then had disappeared again. Is there a story behind the blue man, or was it already on when Lee got the strat? And did the CAP10 come with the sticker?
Duse tha mxr pedal really really surpised me zi would use that pedal by itself with literally no other pedal it had an amazing tone to it could put just enough drive and get really sweet clean tones when needed very very nice well rounded pedal
Cool comparison! Great sounding pedals. I feel like it really depends what you are doing with the pedal. I only have the EP Booster. I use it before my little solid state amp to give it some “Tube Feel”. It’s magic for my low vol practice at home. It’s just makes a mess of my Tube amp, though.... #whenvioletsturngrey
I wonder if the way to illustrate the actual level of boost, which you claim can't be exemplified on the UA-cam compression factor or that of the camera, is to actually have an SPL meter showing the number of dBs gained ? We might not be able to hear the difference but at least we could see it.

It’s worth mentioning that the ep & katana both have internal dip switches which is really cool

EP Booster on vintage setting = superb superbness
300 pounds for a volume bump and a slight EQ change... Vemuram's pricing is rather laughable.
Just get an MXR CAE Boost/Line Driver. The exact same transparency for literally a fraction of the price.
It really is. Never understood the whole boutique pedal thing. A good guitar and amp is all you need.
It's literally Dior of pedals, unnecessary expensive for the name, good quality, finest materials but still doesn't justify the cost.
If you spend more than the cost of a TC Electronic Spark, a graph of your diminishing returns will look like someone falling off a cliff.
Especially when most of their circuits are stolen.
Boys, FYI, the Katana has dip switches behind the bottom plate that you can change to color your sound and get a little grit if you like.
As does the EP boost.
