I can't believe I watched Rabea noodle with different overdrives for over an hour, but here we are. No regrets.
Way worse ways to spend the hour, huh? I'm not even in the market for an OD, but listening to Rabea mess with them is always a treat.
The playing was stellar. I kept hearing incubus inspirations and even at one stage a touch of rush
Same.
Beauty of guitar, I could listen to these metal strings plucking all damn day
I watched at work some and now I'm at home watching the rest 18:04 . And I'm going to go play through my line 6 😂 I've never had traditional pedals 😂
I need to say this. Rebea, Pete, all the "Presenters" are magic, but Lee makes the show what it is. He steers the ship and makes me laugh everyday. Thank you Lee, our Captain
The "slightly awkward lunch coming up" was a superb example of this!
I came for tones and the tunes, but I stayed for The Captain.
Beautifully said. Without him the ship sinks for me.
But he is such a grabby mf lol. Always twisting knobs and pushing buttons lol 😂
Yeah, I'd compare him to the captain of a football team. No idea why my mind went there.
It's incredible how relevant BOSS manages to remain up against HIGH DOLLAR boutique and hype driven pedals. They really are the GOAT of the pedal industry.
A bit pricy innit
Mind it’s the Waza Craft and it’s £150ish
That was a waza craft though
I have a Boss GX100. It is such a sleeper. A quarter of the latency of my QC, I actually play it more than anything else I own.
My thoughts exactly. The blues driver won my heart years ago, and it's still so hard to compete with.
The BD-2 is like the Telecaster. Not expensive, not glamorous but a reliable workhorse and gets the job done.
Yeah I gonna buy on just because of this video.
Telecasters are pretty expensive though, atleast if we’re talking about fenders
The Tumnus is just a fantastic little magic overdrive pedal...it's a gem, a modern classic guitar drive.
isn't it just a 90's klon?
@@christopher-milesYES, i said modern in the sense of the year when the tumnus came out, a couple of years ago.
Anyway , it's not a 100 per cent like the original klone circuit. The TUMNUS has a very deep low end frequency, really unique.
I use my klon type od as my crunch drive. Its really good with the gain dialed in @ 1-2pm
@@beesong2450 Awesome!
Check out the deluxe version, the EQ section is magic.
These are great! but just as an idea could you give Rabea an AB footswitch so he can flip quickly himself?
esto tiene sentido
My thoughts exactly. Glad you said this!
Then we, the customer, wouldn’t know which pedal he is playing and producers wouldn’t be able to keep up. The videos are enjoyable etc but they are advertisements.
@@pmck3438 We would know, because the JHS pedal Lee is using to switch between the pedals has a "remote" input where you can connect a footswitch. The camera would still be recording the JHS pedal and we could still see the red/green lights and the producer could switch the arrows.
Absolutly agree, the Boss is the Boss.
I absolutely love how the captain quickly moved on from a beringer beating a wampler tumnus.
His profit would suffer. Can't have that.
And even funnier when he got to the end and changed the rules so that the warm drive could be removed !!
Always amazing how consistently the Tumnus fairs in all these shootouts and comparisons. It really is a testament to what a fantastic pedal Brain Wampler built. The pedal always sounds amazing.
100% agree! Brian really creates some magic and even his overdrive pedals have unique and easily identifiable per pedal......ex. I like the Tumnus for the lower-end dynamic added that seperates from it just being a mid-heavy Klon clone. I like the Belle for the "proximity" to the Nobels ODR-1 but with more character/headroom.
I wanna say the tumnus beat the actual klon too…?
@@martyshwaartz971it did yes. Narrowly tho.
I have plenty of ODs/Distortions and the Tumnus Deluxe is probably my overall favorite. The only one that comes close in my collection is the Plumes. I like the Charlie Brown a lot, but it's not quite as versatile and colors the tone a lot more. The Plumes probably should've been in this shootout.
I think the Tumnus was the best! 🙌
Rabea's playing is inspiring. Literally made me start playing the guitar after watching a billion Andertons videos. Cheers everyone! Nice tan captain
You only started playing guitar after watching Anderton's videos?
@@tldnolan I started playing guitar because I always wanted to and the Andertons crew playing in their videos, along with mr Mark Holcomb were the final push that lead me to my first guitar purchase and lessons!
Only a billion 😅❤
CapTan
Bea is awesome! Thanks for enduring these contests! We all win when you do them. Very cool test that a lot of the kool-aid we drink is nothing more than just that. You probably already one the perfect drive. Stop tone chasing, and start playing more.
There should be a final round where the winner that stayed on the longest challenges the final choice. I love these shootouts a lot!! Thanks Rabea and Lee!
I guess I should have watched to the very end before making this comment. lol
@@gameoftones77 They should do a testimonial match, where they just play the same pedal against itself and see who wins.
That Boss SUPER OverDrive was great. Didn't deserve to parish in the first round, it was my favorite together with the Wampler Tumnus!
Thats what I noticed immeadiately too. Its the amp man it takes pedals so goood.
Yes, yes, and yes. The Boss Super Overdrive slayed. When that was eliminated, it was the Wampler by a mile. The Bluesdriver sounded incredible in Rabea's hands. But I know it wouldn't sound great in mine lol. The other two seemed more forgiving and akin to my style.
@@testcyp767 the Bluesdriver sounded a bit more muddy. I preferred the midrange presence of the Wampler.
Yeah, the Super Overdrive and the Wampler were also my two favorites.
@@rome8180 agreed. It didn't have any 'spank' to it. It's a bit boring to me.
This is premium UA-cam guitar content. Loved every minute
Worth mentioning Blues Driver was in custom mode - so the waza craft mod. Great vid
Glad you pointed that out. I did not catch that during the video and it's pretty important info. Cheers!
Good point. I noticed that too, probably because I have a BD-2W. The custom mode is supposed to improve low end and add sustain, so people who liked the winning tone should definitely go for the Waza, rather than the standard.
Bd
the S mode is disapponting
This video really shows you how crucial getting a great basic tone from the amp is. Higher quality amps make a lot of things sound so much better, you can really get away with using less expensive OD's to push things. I wasted a lot of money on amazing pedals and paired them up with less than stellar amp platforms and they didn't perform well. The amp is the most important part of your tone!
100% Pedals are a trap. A good amp is the foundational magic.
I beg to differ. Most amps sound pretty good, but the speaker is the weak link. Stock speakers have tons of reinforcement on them. That is necessary to prevent teens from blowing speakers and the consequent warranty returns. Those speakers sound terrible. Don't blame the amp itself. I have bought stellar amps that sounded crappy out of the box and they did not sound better after breaking in the speaker.
Nonsense, everyone knows that 1000 percent of your tone comes from the skin on the tips of your fingers. I'm sorry, I had to.
This is stupid opinion. I played crap amp as well crap effect. But I played also good amp as well good effect. Effect gives you more variability if you need it.
Yee I didn't have a great amp for a while and I started getting pedals for tones, got some alright ones but as soon as I got a half decent valve amp I just fell in love and ended up even selling most of the pedals
Don't tell him what his current favourite is, just make him choose between two sounds. It's anchoring him clearly.
Am I the only one who thought the SD-1 at the beginning might have been the best sounding pedal? Tumnus was great as well... great playing Rabea!
No, you’re not the only one. There is one other.
Same here, and just wanna say I always overlook that pedal in my collection until I'm low on options and have no choicr but to plug them in, and they always blow me away.
It really was. I was pretty surprised by some of the choices in this one.
The SD1 is up there with the Blues driver and the Tumnus!
Love pedal definitely still makes the zen drive. That and the Tchula by lovepedal are my two favorite drives right now
An hour of Rabea doing what he does so well. Great!
The Boss BD held its own for so long and did the business. What a great pedal! Not bad for a pedal originally released in 1995!
For some reason it's always been burning away slowly in the background. Strange it is only just now seeming to gain the popularity it deserves.
Not really a fan tbh 🤷🏻♂️
BD-2 has never left my board. I keep it ALWAYS ON
Haha big Brandon Carter in the house
Do you use it with a compression? It has a very bright tone with compression but without I feel it's dry and rough
Really most pedals are the same. The subtle differences are mostly in EQ and amount of gain available, which you can just adjust many other ways with your setup if you need to. Bottom line is, spending a fortune on pedals is purely for the idea and image of what you're actually getting. If you're really a great guitar player and creative, you could use any old pedal and make it sound perfectly amazing. Simple as that. This is exactly what almost every lauded guitarist throughout history has always done, just used whatever they had or was available to them at the time and made it sound iconic with their creativity.
Except that they’re not. Like Rabea said, some pedals capture a whole different mood. Alot of pedals pretty much lock you into the one thing that they do.
Not many people are great guitar players…..The rest just play
Rabea getting so incredibly good over the years. Incredible player. Cheers!
He’s naturally gifted, no question about it.
I’ve probably got 20,000 more hours of playing and practicing time in than he does, (I’m 25 years older than him, so, it stands to reason) yet he is 10 times the player I am. He just has a natural gift for rhythm and melody that can’t be taught or practiced. It’s IN him.
Lucky guy. I love his playing.
@@zenlandzipline Having taught sax and flute myself for many decades, there are two vital ingredients for being really good: Talent and Hard Work.
And I would say that hard work is slightly more important.
@@alanhaynes418 agree, but I will add this: “hard work” is a subjective concept. What may be “hard” to somebody with average or below average musical ability, might actually be easy to someone who is naturally gifted.
Putting in 8 hours a day of practice and learning isn’t really that hard to do, if the practice and learning come easy to someone.
Ask a virtuoso guitar player if their first 10 years of practice and learning were “hard”, and they will most likely say “well, I put in many hours of practice, but it really didn’t seem that hard. It didn’t seem like hard work. It was just just what I did. I enjoyed playing and practicing my instrument”.
There are of course people with average musical ability who worked extra hard, put in more hours, and became very proficient on their instrument. But there is a difference between being proficient, and being someone who just sounds melodic and musical every time they pick up their instrument, and making it look natural and easy as they play.
Rabea would sound musical on just about any instrument you hand to him, right off the bat, and would become proficient at it in half the time as somebody with average musical ability.
@@zenlandziplineyeah I agree with you I played for 25 years yet I can't improvise nearly as good as Rabea, I have developed better speed over the years, but varying phrasing and timing like Rabea does is extremely hard if not impossible to learn, I end up doing similar scale runs over and over, I think you need to have something in your brain that just gets it like an instinct, he's like channeling something and just letting it flow while I feel I need to try so much harder to play anything original or even musical. Yet I keep playing as some sort of therapy I guess, I realized a long time ago my talent is very limited yet I cant seem to put the damn thing down for good
Show me who your guitar idols are and I’ll tell you exactly how good of a player you are. There are exceptions but with a guy like rabea I guarantee it’s because he’s learned from the best and in many different genres.
Learn a few Django songs to perfection and your playing will drastically improve. Same with vai, van halen, rush, holdsworth, messhugah. And improv comes easier once you’ve done your homework and dissected the greats. Every time i find a player I truly love and I hear about their influences it always makes perfect sense. This is my hot take but I believe it wholeheartedly.
First I thought the “custom design” on the JHS series 3 screamer looks really stunning. Then I realized someone painted it with a green sharpie 😂😂😂
Same here 😂😂😂
The tumnus has a lot of level
So with the knob at noon it’s actually pushing the amp harder
Which is why I think Rebea liked it
Unity on the tumnus is around 9 o’clock
Can’t get enough of these winner stays on features. LOVE the addition of an informal playoff for standouts who’d lasted a few rounds. Godlike playing as always, Bea. Cheers!
The Behringer Tube OD screaming thingy is a beast! Tweak them knobs to find your tone and you got 20 quids worth of eternal fun!
I had one on my board for around 10 years. Kicked it off with a Plumes for the versatility, but it was every bit as good as the real thing.
I have one like it alot.hands down the biggest bang for your buck.
The captain moved on fast... Behringer was about to replace the wampler.
SPOILER ALLERT!!
Didnt rabea choose the Blues Driver in the other overdrive shootout they did!
Amazing. Gonna buy it right now. The chances of it winning 2 shootouts can t make it a coincidence.
The other one was guessing the most expensive pedal. But it seems like he really likes the BD-2 in shootouts.
Just bought the WAZA BD-2 last week.. it's so much fun.. love it!!🤘 You will not regret your purchase.
Just make sure you buy the BD-2w. Rabea played in custom mode, that’s only available with the BD-2W
@@philausdemwildenwesten4158 Correct.
I bought the Super AT Mod which is a modified BD. Greatest thing since sliced bread and I've got a box full of stomps.
The BD-2 was my first pedal and its still on my board 20 years later. I always found it odd that there are not very many Blues Driver clones but seeming every other overdrive circuit has been remade over and over.
evidently, it's a complicated circuit
It's a testament to the bd2 that the mooer clone is pretty much just as sought after. Not gonna say its nearly as good but they're definitely thin on the ground and much higher priced
I must thank you for this: I had a Blues Driver back in the 90s, didn’t like it much, lost it after a gig (bag on roof of car forgotten before we drove off) and I was honestly happy about it! But this video has made me revisit my Blues Driver aversion and I am now the proud owner of a Keeley Super Phat Mod and I’m loving it. Thank you Pete and Lee!
You can make a Klon sound like a Tube Screamer sound like a Blues Breaker . . . And if you’re Rabea you can make them all sound terrific.
He is amazing
Rabes really shows us that the tone is in the hands, he can make every pedal sound the best🔥🔥🔥
I love how versatile Rabea's playing is!! Most people that are doing demos lean hard into their comfort zone but I think his comfort zone is as wide as it gets. Who else does a few proper chugs, then hybrid picks, shreds and then finishes with a few great blues licks?
OMG nothing better than a 68 minute Overdrive pedal shootout!! Gold
If anything, this video is a testament to the quality of the Victory amp used as a platform for these pedals, it sounded glorious!
Rabea is quite the player. I could listen to him for hours. He definitely has a Nuno vibe to his playing. That Tumnus V2 sounded amazing, IMO.
If you know, Rabea also plays drums and I believe he started on drums first... like Nuno :)
My conclusion about overdrive pedals: love the one you're with.
Man!!! Lee's expression when the Tube Screamer kicks in at 35:26 is PRICELESS :P
Looked like Mr. Bean. 😂
Funny
The winners were really great, but man that marshall on full blast was monstrous in a way that pleaseth mine ears
It really was. But Lee doomed it on position of the knobs. He also put the settings on Origin totally wrong. Im not saying it should be fair, but Lee is totally wrong dude for these kind of test because he cant dial in a good sound on a pedal. Maybe for bluse guys but not for Rebea!
Let's be honest; we're all winners from this shootout. But my three favorites were 1. Rabea 2. Sire S7 (which I bought after the first Andertons review) 3. The BD-2 (I've got the OD-200, but the BD-2 is my fave on that)
I am kinda sad they used the custom setting on the BD-2W.
@@kadinnui2282 Agree.
I was only 33 minutes in when I realized I was in for a video that's over an hour long!.. hell yeah I'm in for this!!❤
Love it when Rabea shows up; dude can play like nobody else, and it's good to see him getting some recognition!
A privilege gentlemen. Enjoyed every moment. Rebea is a special talent we know. Big shout out to Lee's part of entertaining and educating. Bring on the delays delays delays delays
The Blues Driver is the one pedal to have stayed on my board from the start. Was excitedly cheering it on!
I got tge keeley modded. Sold it. Was so mad. Took me awhile to find. Another.
Let’s be honest here, Rabea Can AND Does make absolutely anything sound good! The guy is insane and his guitar 🎸 skills are off the chart!!!!
Awesome video👍
I think the Tumnus got a bit of an advantage with the gain turned up. The shootout might have gone quite differently if Lee and Bea decided to match gain by turning the Tumnus down instead of all the others up. But it put Bea in the "barky" mood lol. But that's just me talking, I love using overdrives and even distortions at low gain.
Agree, it could have gone the Tumnus direction, but Rabea knows his preferences.
Made it through and loved every second ! Rabea’s playing is just awesome. Thanks guys.
You definitely should do compressors next. This series is awesome
Boss has the advantage that it is a huge, world wide brand. No matter where you are, if your pedal dies you can get a replacement at any local music store. Not that they're likely to, I've had an OD-1 since the mid 80s and it still works perfectly.
Someone really should make a compilation of Lee's movements and facial expressions during these shootouts, he's hilarious
Yay I LOVE this format! Such a good way to hear many pedals btb
honestly I just watch these to hear rabea jam, his playing is so god damn good. I had a couple of lessons with him way back in the day and he is genuinely such a nice guy to boot.
Blues Driver is a staple and a classic for a reason!! Also, cleans up for a chimey jangley tone like no other. Most dynamic OD by far
Rabea is such a fantastic player, I love listening to him demo pedals. and Lees passion for gear is great. more like this please
Did I just watch an hour long video of two blokes noodling around with overdrive pedals?
Yes. Yes I did. No regrets
We need mores of these videos please!!! So fun and informative. Amazing guitar playing and such a lovely and entertaining commentary! Please do more!
Loved the lengthy video! Such a treat to have The Captain and Rabea for over an hour on camera. Great stuff, chaps!
It’s taken me years to come back around to the brilliance of Boss pedals. I’ll always remember the night my digital rig broke mid set. I had a back up cheapo tube amp and a Boss DS1. Thru a cranked tube amp the DS1 floored me. We did 80’s pop and metal, 90’s grunge, 70’s rock and disco. It sounded amazing! There’s a magic setting on that pedal I discovered that night. Will never forget it.
These videos are brilliant, hats off to Lee and the team for producing this kind of content. 👏
BD-2 never leaves my pedal board. Such a great pedal!
excellent shootout, thank you! Have never seen such a wide comparison. You can extrapolate which ones you would like as a boost, very cool!
What a marathon! Every pedal sounded stunning. Thanks Anderton’s and Rabea!
I honestly thought the JHS Tubescreamer (the one coloured green) sounded realllllly nice... but yes, loved the Blues Driver!
I have the JHS 3 Series screamer and I absolutely love it. I put a green sticker on mine instead of covering it with green sharpie though, lol. I haven't heard a bad pedal from JHS's 3 series yet and they don't kill your wallet either. I think they absolutely nailed it for their
Man every video you do with Rabea is stellar. Man I could sit for hours and listen to this guy play. I'm pretty sure I've been playing guitar longer than Rabea has been alive, but man does he ever inspire me. All of the things Rabea and Rob Chapman did together was totally of the charts. I must say I was surprised at the sound of the Boss Blues driver but it hands down is the tone that I prefer so I am happy that it won the shootout. Please more vid's with Rabea. He is a guitar God in my book !
Best guitar oriented channel of this type on the web. These guys are The Grand Tour bunch of the guitar world.
You can tell Rabea has spent time working on his sound cause he can find what he likes through blind tests
Great shootout. Loved the JHS Morning Glory. Seems to be very versatile. 2 thoughts: would have loved to hear the SD-1 vs. the BD-2 at the end, and I think if the challenge had been boosting your lead tone instead of adding distortion to your crunch channel the verdicts would have been quite different...
Love seeing you guys together. Love these blind tests of pedals.
The Blues Driver was my fave as well.
It was impressive and seemed like it would be very versatile.
Watching this video over and over again for a couple of years until now, it is sooo beautiful to see how everyone on stage enjoys every single second of greatness! Made me cry so many times🥹
Duke of tone is incredibly articulate with beautiful tones, my fav. Then the Tumnus, great pedal and best klon clone. That said, my fav EVER overdrive pedal is the ANGRY DRIVER by Boss (blues driver + GHS angry charlie... who is a marshall guvnor clone) and lots of chain options, the most versatile overdrive pedal ever.
Great video! Now do a *low* gain overdrive comparison with the post-season-favorite shootout at the end. Maybe have Rabea dial in his ideal low gain tone per pedal in advance (If he's got the time.) Then stack em! Mwahaha.
this is pure magic man, I sat throught the whole hour of video, totally worth it... awesome stuff guys, thanks a lot!
Always gonna watch these the whole way! We love them and the amazing playing.
Love these! Just a suggestion…maybe have the AB switch on Rabea’s side? Then he can flip between, and maybe a kill switch on lees side when he needs Rebea to stop jamming which no one wants 😂🤘🤘.
The Tumnus Deluxe in particular has always been one of my favorite pedals, the three band tone stack is super powerful. Always been trying to turn heavier players onto it, still underrated!
The Tumnus Deluxe rules! 🎛️
My takeaway:
"What's your favorite od?"
Rabea: "The latest one I'm trying."
:-)
Rabea rocks. Been watching this channel for years. Love a new clip to go with my morning coffee
The Boss video sounds like a fun idea and hope you follow through with it. The BD-2 is my absolute favorite pedal and use the SD-1 and DS-1 as well. With that said I'd like to see the standard models go toe to toe with the Waza Craft models.
That’s the buzzy section of my pedalboard as well. SD-1 -> BD-2W -> DS-1.
Great shootout! My favorites in this setting were the Blues Driver and Tumnus. 🤘
Loved seeing this. Blues driver is my favorite overdrive of all time. Great seeing it so so well.
So much fun! Thank you for making these videos guys.
Bea has gotten incredible. His lick lines are otherworldly. Dudes legit.
Thanks for yet another one of these great videos. Loving this shootout series also and foremost for Rabea’s superb playing. Of the three finalists I’d probably go for the BD2 but it’s really a close call. Keep up with the great videos
The Tumnus was my favorite. So clear and sweet 👍 Nice shootout
Great video! I think you should give Rabea control of the toggling with the foot switch. That way he can bounce back and forth as he likes mid lick. :)
Great idea
I think I'd have the top 2 drives and use them together. The Blues Driver has that sweet clean boost sound when you roll off the volume, and the Tumnus has the mid range but clear bark of overdrive.
Agreed, except I'd use the Tumnus Dlx for that sweet EQ.
The Waza has an attack character that NONE but the Tumnus even has and the Tumnus gets a bit muddier on the neck than the Waza...and that Horsemeat was freaking great. Warm Drive is a beast and the last Marshall Pedal is far more of a Preamp than an overdrive. I would say for price, board real estate, and total feel is the Tumnus for me but the Waza and the Warm drive aren't getting kicked out of bed if I wake up next to em
All hail the Blues Driver. Tried and true, it really should be a standard on every board.
On studio speakers the BD2 was by far the best pedal.
At the end of this series, I hope there is a ‘winners board’ episode to hear the best-of-the-best, side-by-side, and some together.
I like this video very much! I watched it from the start to the end!
Impressive guitar playing skills Rabea!
Thank you.
Made it to the end. I love my Deluxe Tumnus and Morning Glory, but that blues driver is rather nice.
On the Boss question, their little stomp boxes are like the Goldilocks of the pedal world - everything is just right. Well Built, Well thought out and very reasonably priced. What more could anyone want?
you guys should do Boss OD-200 where Rabea tries to make it sound like and against some of the most coveted boutique pedals. The OD-200 has kicked every other drive pedal of my board - would be great to see what the pros at Andertons think of it. I think it is criminally under rated.
I've got the older OD-20 on my backup board and use it exclusively for Blues Driver setting lol
great video, smart premise, all parties involved hats off to you and greetings from sunny california. the final shoot out of the the two that SURVIVED the longest and last favorite is a MUST !!! helps eliminate desensitization as a factor. WELL DONE
I loved the full sound of the Tumnus. Great content!
Never apologise for a long video with Rabea :D
Behringer stuff is such great value. Maybe never the best, but always in the ballpark. 👍
Smart comment, those are definitely their main strengths. Great inexpensive entry point into a type of pedal that may not be a favourite (yet), to help you figure out what you like and need most.
I have that TO800 pedal and love it, personally. Caline Pure Sky is also a great bang for your buck OD.
The Behringer vintage delay is the best 27.00 I ever spent
@@dwstoeckel4740. I can relate. I couldn't believe how well my Behringer 7 band EQ worked, and for about $27 coincidentally.
@@lw1391 So true. Well said. 👍
This series is fantastic. I love hearing all the pedals, but in some ways the discussion is even more valuable. Helps me learn exactly what people mean when they talk about "transparency", "smoothness" and all that.
These segments are alot of fun.
Really enjoying these style vids. Thanks guys
What a tough ride for Rabea always hearing the same slightly different pushed amp! 😅
