I really enjoyed this, I'm a boost man and think most overdrive pedals sound awful. Xotic Boosts for me, EP and RC V2. Pete was the perfect man for this job.
Personally I prefer the sound from the ambient mic, it's how I hear stuff at home so sounds familiar. Also really liked the buxom Betty. Great video and stellar playing from Pete as always.
It took me a while to figure out the rationale/difference between using boost pedals vs. overdrive/dirt pedals. Then it occurred to me when I was looking at a preamp circuit - the first gain stage can not clip, it simply amplifies the signal to the point where clipping may happen by the second gain stage or maybe by the 3rd gain stage - but from the get go, a guitar can't overload the first gain stage on it's own - so boost pedals are tapping un-mined territory by driving the very first stage into clipping and of course by default the following stages as well {or not if the gain knob is kept down, and simply only the first stage clips}. So it opened a lot more tonal diversity you can get from an amp. Dirt pedals of course introduce their own clipped waveform that can get amplified in a pristine fashion {faithfully reproducing that clipped waveform all the way to the power stage} or it can mingle with some of the amp's own clipping for a combination of the two. Dirt pedals depending on the manufacturer can also just boost the signal as well along with introducing a clipped signal. I guess the question is, should we be comparing how well many of the dirt pedals out there perform as just a boost with the drive knobs turned down all the way - certainly lots of tubescreamers out there being used in this fashion.
You're totally dead on with one of the things vox players (like myself) love about vox amps, that classic "pushed amp" sound where you're smacking the input too hard and everything just turns magical. Ever since I've learned about that trick I've tried smashing the front end of just about everything and have found some really cool results from boosting before an OCD, boosting before a swollen pickle fuzz, and boosting before a Strymon reverb as well as (of course) the amp itself. It's also a great way to have a true "clean clean" and a slightly dirty "clean but if you dig in it starts to break up" at your feet. Not a bad bag of tricks for a pedal I originally bought so that I could switch between active and passive pickup basses in a set without having a major volume difference.
The Boost channel of the Prince/King of Tone run at 18v has been my go to boost for more than a year now. Great EQ and just a hint of grind with the gain cranked.
19:37 and 26:03 are definite Pete X moments! :D And yes, blindfold for all of these would be great! Also, the Box of Rock's boost side is like magic sauce!
The Supro was by far my favourite one, might get this. The Vemuram and Walrus were good, too. But the Supro was outstanding for me. The others don't compete against the Z.Vex Super Duper 2in1 I had. (again my personal taste) Oh and the gospel bomb sounded great, I never heard about this.
I'll just say whatever you did this time with the mic work on the amps... keep on going like that! these do actually sound like "The sound in the room", really nice..
Keep this! hell of a lot of pedals but throw in the blindfold like other comments suggested 👍 then amps brand as well and see wich brand who would surprise you 👍
AND got that amazing feature, that allows You to step on it and its working as long as You pressing down the button. It boost You as long as You need to boost Yourself :D
I looked for ages for a simple clean boost. A friend of mine bought me the LPB-1 which has tones of volume without affecting my tone. The one here sounds awful - I wonder if they had it going in the front of the amp instead of through the FX loop, which it's supposed to do.
Thank you for the video. There are a lot of boost pedals and I started with really no idea if I would interested or which one to get. This helped a little bit :-) I did learn that having a bass control of some sort is useful as clean boosts can add a bit to much bass.
The whole thing that was good about the one with Rob, was the fact that he was blindfolded and therefor had no brand bias. This should have been done the same way!
He loved the fulltone 2b, that was clear but by the end he said he didn't like any of them in that bunch that included the 2b.....ive ordered a 2b because it's so vibey here
The LPB one is very cheap and I found it worked best as a lead boost but in the loop - so it was just a vol lift - in the front it sounds muddy. EP still a classic but I use Helix now with a Victory V30 and have a plethora of options :D
Love petes chord choice as ever... schweet! The vyagra boost eq is awesome once its nailed down to the guitar and amp involved.. but perhaps too much faff for some, the cheap one previous (hotone) as well sounds like it has a more comprehensive eq or tone stack than it lets on. Stuff like that can be make or break into some setups imho. This kind of comparison rocks!
Man it cheeses me right off the way that the TC Spark Mini is overshadowing the full-size. The big Spark is the best booster on the market, imho. It's so annoying how it's not in any of these shootouts.
I was surprised that Lee didn't have a comeback when he mentioned himself the question of "why don't you just fiddle with the EQ settings on the amp?" For me, a boost really shines when you need to cut through the mix say when entering a lead section you want to accent or indeed a solo. Otherwise in a regular jam session or say a bedroom practice you could just twiddle the knobs and be done. This is from a guy that does have a boost pedal (Tone City All Spark actually bought from Andertons).
I think the difference between the MXR echoplex vs the Xotic EP booster is the 2 internal dip switches the ep booster has. I think if you were to take the treble and the plus 3 db switches off then I think it would sound very close to the MXR. But to me I like the extra treble and 3 db of boost the EP booster has.
So, if I came into your store, would you let me try out 30 boost pedals? I've found in some music stores, they don't really want to listen to someone trying out something for too long. I find it fairly difficult to give any guitar gear a good try because of having to play at low volumes for only a few minutes until the clerks get tired of hearing me play one lick over and over.
My favorite: The Katanas... I have the big and mini (demos in my channel). I really love the Mini but mine has failed me soon on the switch button. Great Shoot out!!!
I cut out chocolate bars 'Boost' and 'Crunch' from a Crunchie, and 'Drift' from a Drifter and stuck them on my old Digitech RP-6 a couple of decades ago to give me chocolatey stomp buttons. I can't remember what the clean one was now. 😂
Fellow UA-camrs! I am just looking for a boost to bump my leads up a bit to cut through since we play with 3 guitarists. I dont need anything to colour my tone, in fact I don't want that. Just a nice little volume boost. I was thinking of the TC Spark Mini. Any others to consider?
Could you try to shootout fuzz pedals? Maybe with Rabea... doesn't he like fuzz very much? Would love to see that! I find it so hard to find the right fuzz pedal for me, because they are either too weak or way too "crazy".
I love that strat! (Awesome color. Candy tangerine, right?) And, while not part of the lineup, do you (or any commenters here) have any thoughts on the Bogner Harlow?
rayze 101 it's not really your typical boost. It can be used as a boost but it was also made to add treble to your fuzz pedals if they are too dark. I bought one and took it back because their was way too much treble and their was only a volume knob so their was no way of taking the treble out.
Chris Hepburn I don't get that from it through my set up, it seems to add clarity to everything. The boost they were using was across the board as well so The Arrows would not have been out of place in this video.
rayze 101 My original one knob micro amp killed it. I bought it thinking it would replace the micro amp but it didn't. I'm glad it works for you, it just wasn't right for my tone
Chris Hepburn I've got the original mxr micro amp as well but the best boost I have is the xotic ep boost. I've got a few of everything cause I get bored with pedals. I'm glad it works for me as well, thanks.
***//***An Idea for a video: You make a video where you take all the gear sitting around the video room and just mix-&-match it "randomly". Like for example; you just did a demo for a new batch of Ibanez guitars and demo for say...Vox amps. Take the guitars and amps or pedals lying around and see what you can do with them. Better example, say you just did a video for new Gretsch guitars and you just did a Mesa Boogie demo, make a little video for the pair. Just an idea, though.
I agree. I have a Koko Boost Reloaded and it seriously makes everything sound better. I find it's best for pushing or adding clarity/tightness to a driven amp though hehe, but I love it for almost any kind of boosting.
FINALLY the guitar community is warming up to the idea that a pedal does not have to be way over priced, rely on fake artificial scarcity and a cool name to be a great pedal. Nobody cares your board has a hand painted $400 pedal with diodes sourced from a 60s warehouse find if you sound like garbage.
God, that stratocaster is awesome. It goes from sweet to face removal in a instant and perfect for Pete.
Its nothing to do with the guitar. Its Pete. He has magic fingers and is Andertons resident 'Guitar God'.
I really enjoyed this, I'm a boost man and think most overdrive pedals sound awful. Xotic Boosts for me, EP and RC V2.
Pete was the perfect man for this job.

Just learning about this stuff
The Vemuram is totally outstanding! This is what „amplike“ sounds like.
I wish you could still get it
@@dustinarnold79 Ha haa! ( out of my realm pricewise, but i have the ZIO and soon a NUX Boost Core Deluxe, very dynamic both o them!!
I got one
2:55 HOW GOOD DOES THIS FULLTONE 2B SOUND #KILLER!
ben galvin I have the Fulldrive 3 that has the 2B built into it, I NEVER switch it off, want a 2B to use on a second pedalboard
The Boost channel of the Prince/King of Tone run at 18v has been my go to boost for more than a year now. Great EQ and just a hint of grind with the gain cranked.
2B sounds great! Spark Mini is pretty nice too but the full size version is better IMO
19:37 and 26:03 are definite Pete X moments! :D
And yes, blindfold for all of these would be great!
Also, the Box of Rock's boost side is like magic sauce!
Finally a real way to see what pedals sound like against the lot. Like the format!
The Supro was by far my favourite one, might get this.
The Vemuram and Walrus were good, too. But the Supro was outstanding for me. The others don't compete against the Z.Vex Super Duper 2in1 I had. (again my personal taste)

22:32 absolute killer tone and riff from The Prince of Denmark!
1 - Walrus, 2 - Supro, 3 - Fulltone for me. Love the tones.
Keep this! hell of a lot of pedals but throw in the blindfold like other comments suggested 👍 then amps brand as well and see wich brand who would surprise you 👍
The blindfold thing with Rob would've been good for this as well
Agreed!! I absolutely love these new shootout vids, but they should be blindfolded. Pete needs a pair of those red goggles with his name on!
The could just add a post-it note saying "NOT Chappers" until he gets some.
yep! blindfold! I think optics and brands will influence the player. it's the same with guitars. if you play an epiphone you will be biased ;)
TC Electronics SPARK (NOT the mini one) - the best I've had.
Is the mini one not good?
Alexander mini is amazing
MINI is good, but I much much prefer the regular one in terms of features available.
Mini is killer booster for No money and looks cool in pedalboard.
AND got that amazing feature, that allows You to step on it and its working as long as You pressing down the button. It boost You as long as You need to boost Yourself :D

The Friedman sounded awesome but got sorted out hehe. Supro was sick too. Fun video
No RC Booster ? ?
EP, Venuram and the Katana were my favourites
The whole thing that was good about the one with Rob, was the fact that he was blindfolded and therefor had no brand bias. This should have been done the same way!
He loved the fulltone 2b, that was clear but by the end he said he didn't like any of them in that bunch that included the 2b.....ive ordered a 2b because it's so vibey here
I use the old one knob micro amp and I always have it on. My favorite boost of all time
Nice watch mate! I just got the bigger dial 39 mm Explorer luv it!
Danish Pete is such a good guitar player and such a huge dork.
Can't believe I didn't pick up one of those Wampler Phsychosematic Drives back in April. Sounds ridiculously good
The LPB one is very cheap and I found it worked best as a lead boost but in the loop - so it was just a vol lift - in the front it sounds muddy. EP still a classic but I use Helix now with a Victory V30 and have a plethora of options :D

Hang on! English Boost bars come in a different wrapper to Aussie ones? Also, I use a Pettyjohn Lift Buffer Boost which is incredible.
More videos with Pete, he is awesome!
The full sized TC Spark is an order of magnitude better than the mini. Surprised at no Suhr Koko boost though
The editing award goes to Rory
Pablo iJustSamba rory only edits robs videos
Try the all spark in the effects loop... Low boost. It totally changed my cornford carrera...
I got Viagra boost....my tone goes all night
YAY!Guitar. Heard it makes the g string go a bit stiff
...only for wet signal though!
No Seymour Duncan pick up booster?
Man it cheeses me right off the way that the TC Spark Mini is overshadowing the full-size. The big Spark is the best booster on the market, imho. It's so annoying how it's not in any of these shootouts.

Omg I laughed so hard when you tried the EHX one
I think the difference between the MXR echoplex vs the Xotic EP booster is the 2 internal dip switches the ep booster has. I hear those videos on the aux input of my vox vt60+, does that make it sounds like it is in the room? Those videos are awesome!
Is a fuzz in the works? That's like 3000 pedals but so many good ones
So, if I came into your store, would you let me try out 30 boost pedals? I've found in some music stores, they don't really want to listen to someone trying out something for too long. Absolutely....

What is that clip on tuner called
The echoplex ones are preamps.. Not made to reaally boost but to colour your tone...
Mini sparkle or tone city for sweet cream for bluesy stuff??
The Katana slays them all, every single time
Nice, I am a big fan of the katana boost (that I bought from you guys).
I cut out chocolate bars 'Boost' and 'Crunch' from a Crunchie, and 'Drift' from a Drifter and stuck them on my old Digitech RP-6 a couple of decades ago to give me chocolatey stomp buttons. I can't remember what the clean one was now. 😂
hi that was a brill video i use a boss me50 peddal board what would be the best way to run the boost just for clean volume thanks.
Redo this one with humbuckers ! 🤟😎🍻💯🔥🔥🔥
Exactly which Hotone boost pedal was that you tried? I think there are a couple available.
No Mesa Boogie Tone Burst? Thats a pretty transparent clean boost.
Did anyone notice that button of the pedal at 11:30 looks like a slightly annoyed penguin due to the reflection of the pedal surface?
Could you try to shootout fuzz pedals? Maybe with Rabea... doesn't he like fuzz very much? Would love to see that! I find it so hard to find the right fuzz pedal for me, because they are either too weak or way too "crazy".
I love those boost bars
Where's the metal zone?
motofriser That's a distortion pedal.
Elliott T it was a joke
motofriser I know, i just wanted to point that out. :)
" i just wanted to point that out" Riiiight.
I'd like to add that a modded metal zone makes for a great EQ/Boost
Whats the pedal at 17:25 ?? It is not on the list. They say “this is the best pedal ever built”.
Wampler Psychosomatic. It was a joke. Literally.
Where's the Ruby Red Booster from Mad Professor?
Could you please do something with the little Hot tubes. Doesn't matter what, I would just love to see it on this channel.
What about seymour duncan pickup booster??
I love that strat! (Awesome color. Candy tangerine, right?)
And, while not part of the lineup, do you (or any commenters here) have any thoughts on the Bogner Harlow?
Did they do the wampler db+ ?? Thought i saw it but couldnt find it in vid
about 3:48...
No Lunastone The Pusher?
What about the koko boost?
I love my Amp 1 pedal - however that beige had to go. Painted into a flaming piece of shoe gaze.
Wow a Wampler I do not like, that is a first
The square TC-Electronic boost still sounds like Beringer
For me the Echoplex missed the mark compared to the EP Boost
TC Spark sounds better with HB's than SC's
Pork n beans was nice overdrive
The Earthquaker Devices Arrows is a great boost, I kept waiting for it to come up but it never did.
rayze 101 it's not really your typical boost. It can be used as a boost but it was also made to add treble to your fuzz pedals if they are too dark. I bought one and took it back because their was way too much treble and their was only a volume knob so their was no way of taking the treble out.

rayze 101 Cheers
Great great demo!!!
That hss strat gets a lot of screen time these days. Who's is it?
I prefer a lion bar tbh.
Pete hating on the Spark?!?! Not loving his fellow Dane! 🤣
Best boutique pedal 👍
Spark boost is boost..
Sound color vemuram
Amm 🤔🤔🤔

I got the feeling that Pete adjusts his playing style to the pedal
Use a graphic pedal as a booster??
To be honest I thought the basic amp tone was just horrible
The ColourSound Powerboost would wreck them all.
Oh for dang sure hahah and it’s gonna wack everything away all the way from boost competition to fuzz competition lol
Suhr Koko boost best boost ive ever tried
I agree. I have a Koko Boost Reloaded and it seriously makes everything sound better. I find it's best for pushing or adding clarity/tightness to a driven amp though hehe, but I love it for almost any kind of boosting.
Why no Koko Boost guys??
Need more blindfold, Pete seems to like everything
Don't MXR claim the mini boost is the micro amp/echoplex?.....odd
wednesday store yup. It's the Echoplex first then it's boosted by a microamp. It's in my board and by fat my favorite boost I've tried.
Fulltone 2B sounded best.
Pork and beans... not a boost... but...EPIC SOUNDS!
The spark adds alot of gain
Own up. Who let one rip at 5:59?
Good Video but i personally would have loved to see Chappers.
Still subjective to what the players ears like. Good shoot out test.
pleaseee make a "Boost" montage
FINALLY the guitar community is warming up to the idea that a pedal does not have to be way over priced, rely on fake artificial scarcity and a cool name to be a great pedal. Captain giving me ASMR over there while he cronches that boost
I use Marshall bb2
Boss OS-2. Very Versatile
Euroshopper boost isotonic
Tc mini through fx loop for the win!!! In front of the amp is bad and messes w the gain.
Anyone else missing the original Boost chocolate bar?
"It's all about the tone"
I feel like it's almost mandatory to do the blindfold on these. your brain will play tricks on you, but your ears.. maybe not so much.
