Came here to say this, BUT, if you read the user manual, it’s actually not a treble & bass switch... It’s a unity gain or +3dB on the left and a flat EQ or vintage EQ on the right.
Nice to see the comparison. The EP is my oldest pedal by far. It works with everything and adds a quality that I can’t replicate with eq changes. Everything after it in my chain sounds better.
I shut the first internal switch on the EP off (cuts base) and leave the treble on. In my opinion it goes from a little heavy on the base, to exquisite. .. like you said, all the way down the chain
If you don’t know which one to get, get an eq pedal like the Boss GE7 because then you can boost what frequencies you want and you can boost the front end of your amp with the level control.
EP has been on my board for years now. It just adds a warmth and a sparkle to my tube amp, especially as more often than not I'm playing at bedroom volumes.
Differences a lot clearer into the clean amp. You can see why people argue over which boost as they push different parts of the spectrum. Greer for me!
Hello ! My favorite boost is not on your video , it's my TC electronics Spark ( i have the full one ,not the small ) ! it's for me the most versatile boost (clean to high gain ) , i use it on fx loop to boost my vox av30 , and i put an tube overdrive direct after my guitar and the sound is so HEAVY , very high gain sound ! my tc electronics boost the sound like 20db and you choose the eq fat-clean or mid , i use it in clean mode for very high gain sound , for me it's just the best booster pedal ! and it's not expensive pedal ! try it !!! In this video the best booster pedal it's the sure shot ! thanks for the video . take care and be safe !
The EP booster is more about the colour that it adds (secret sauce), not so much pushing tubes. It's supposed to emulate the preamp of the old Echo-Plex, if I'm not mistaken - if I am, I'm sure someone will quickly correct me
Well ... the EP still does the job so nicely ... would be my favourite ... and i would make use of the 3 internal DIP switches to tailor it to me liking (;-) BUT as long as you got 1 booster ... no worries ELSE buy an Xotic RC booster (a real worries killer (;-)
Many yonks ago I watched the Cap and Chappers use the Spark. Very versatile, more than just one knob, lots of possible tweaking, not expensive, and I bought it then!
As soon as you get in a proper studio to record the engineer puts EQ, boost and compression on your signal. Usually you say “ wow, it sounds great! Must be because I’m in a studio w/ an engineer”. Took awhile to realize I just needed to add an EQ & boost pedals to my set up whenever and wherever. When you see David Gilmour playing comfortably numb onstage w/ two giant racks behind him it’s because he is just bringing all the gear that was used on his signal in the studio to get that heavenly tone. 👍
I tend to run the Benson between 5-6 to add just a little character and compression. It basically replaced using a compressor for me. Definitely more noticeable when completely clean.
It honestly depends on what you want it to do... EP Boost is an always on fatten/color pedal. I've never really liked it for just boosting my sound for like a lead or something. For that I use GE-7 slight bump at 800hz and gain for my main board. And Spark mini for travel board.
I want that High Headroom pedal just because there's a classic T3 campervan with "high headroom" on it. What a pleasant design and a great idea really omg that's genius.
I have a Dunlop EP101 in the effects loop (or after dirt pedals if going into the front of an amp) and always on. Putting the “echoplex preamp” style of boosts after the gain has a much more pronounced effect and makes almost any gain sound great.
a technical question. Do I get the same functions as the Benson Germanium Boost (green pedal) by setting the Benson germanium fuzz as a clean boost? Both pedal with germanium transistor
I liked the EP and the Benson the most. TC Electronic's Spark is visually grating to me and my board but I've always thought about getting one because their internal buffer is the ideal amount and having a Spark at the beginning and Polytune at the end of your chain would solve any buffer issues.
Sometimes in a band situation you need a little more for certain parts. Can't always depend on your guitars volume to be enough. I use my Strat's volume but my dB-1 kicks in a lot more when I need it. And I play through a Boogie or pro tube Twin. Both have more than enough volume.
So the Benson pre-12 O'clock quietens down, and post-12 O'clock boosts - If so it's and Interesting function. But I think I got the right one when I plummeted for the Xotic EP Je ne regrette rien
All of the boost pedals sound amazing! I think any one of them would be great in your arsenal. I would have to agree with the Captain though; the Benson just adds a truer sound that just melts like butter for your ears.
After playing around with various pedals the other day, I came to the conclusion that it would be great if there was a pedal that had both clean and treble boost facility. And it seems there are some such, as sold by Thorpy, Mad Professor, Rothwell, and Suhr (to name about half those I could find). I do have separate pedals for this job, but I'm really trying to get the board down as slim as I can.
Like boosters myself. EP, Benson I like. The Greer Sure Shot seems to turn Pete into Steve Hunter to my ears. Currently my favourite is the old "Pork and Beans" pedal by Greer.... Pete. (another one).
I wonder how many boost pedals are simply the standard op-amp negative-feedback inverting amplifier circuit lifted from chapter one of any electronics textbook. My money's on "lots and lots of them".
It seems that the boost pedal is used to drive the amp, not other pedals. Once you turned on the Morning Glory, it took over the sound and that's why the boost pedals all sounded the same then. Once you were back to boosting the amps, you heard a great amp boosted sound. Boosters only help the amp, and maybe add some EQ. I would add a boost to a tube amp any day. Great vid.
The bass thump of the EP might be a tad much with darker sounding or bass heavy amps, but works a treat for a licks and solo's on the clean channel or to fatten up amps with a scooped voicing. I use the EP a lot on the clean channel of my RV MKI. I really like the Benson, but for now the EP stays. There's some magic sauce in there.
Now all we need is the Danish Pete Purple Andertons Ltd Edition Keeley Katana..... Come on Captain Lee and Pete, you know the fans want one, get Robert telled!!! 😝
The Benson sounds so good but a very small window, has to be 3/4 to all the way up. Not sure why below noon it's quieter and more treble? Maybe someone will know...it's germanium so will temperature affect it or is that only fuzz?
Benson IS killer, BUT ALL ya gotta do ta get more hi end outa the EP is open it up n hit one of the THREE DIP switches, does the Benson have that option?
@@andertons sorry I meant to say the rest of the se range! Lol I know you guys have done tons before but you’ve missed some big releases by them and I’m just surprised as they’re obviously some of your favorites

@@haloskater24 Hi there. I'm liking the Benson so far. It pairs well with my drive for the most part, though I am not entirely sure I like it where I have it placed, which is before my overdrive (Hotcake). In this scenario, I use it to boost a mild overdrive setting for those times when I want a little more (which is often, latley)... But honestly, I'm not sure if I like what it does to the Hotcake. It seems to soften the transients a bit too much maybe? I go back and fourth if I like it...funnily enough I just tried moving it last evening for the first time... No way man where’s the MXR Micro amp! I love mine, however I am baffled by its price considering you can get a fully fledged delay pedal for the same price!
The EP Bost dip switches inside for bass and treble cut!!!!!!!!!!
They have a habit of not reading the instructions and judging on partial features
Came here to say this, BUT, if you read the user manual, it’s actually not a treble & bass switch... It’s a unity gain or +3dB on the left and a flat EQ or vintage EQ on the right.
I'd no idea the EP had internal switches😮 Thanks!😃
Nice to see the comparison. The EP is my oldest pedal by far. It works with everything and adds a quality that I can’t replicate with eq changes. Everything after it in my chain sounds better.
yep, its JFET transisters, just ordered a cheaper JFET booster Tone City All Spark...😎😎

@UseTheSupeRsonic I used the GE7 for a while until I got a Pod Go which has an OCD pedal on it, which I find to be a great overdrive pedal.
Let’s go!!!! My day is complete with Lee and Pete.
There are a couple of internal dip switches in the EP Booster. Turn on the “bright switch” if you think it has too much bass. Just a tip.
I think it's Bright on/Bass off from factory for these switches.
Prestige and Spark are so much better, none of the "dip switch" crap to deal with

@@robertbrown2728 yeah it's a very good option and it's not expensive product !
+1 to this. It's a great pedal, I actually use it as a bass boost 'always on' pedal!

TC spark is a sleeper and it's very cheap! I have one. I have so many boosts. Dirt pedal junky!

I think using a pedal to drop volume to clean up is often called an underdrive 5:31. That Pedal Show has been talking about it more lately.
Ooooor turn your volume down?
I love my spark !
Yep. Same here .

I use the middle setting on the EQD Plumes. It does decent boosty work.
I play in a working band and the Greer Sureshot which I just put on my board is definitely my favorite boost by far !!! That thing works
My favorite guitar player uses 3 ep boosts for gain staging. It's incredible.

That Benson into the Morning Glory 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😁
Awesome; I was missing Pete; glad to see him in on the recent uploads : )
The EP boost is great for Strats for a pushed clean sound. I use it to balance the sound of my humbucker guitar.
About the xotic ep boost being bassy, I'm fairly certain it has internal dip switches to adjust the frequency response....
J Mascis does the cleaner upper trick with his wall of Marshalls

I’m from Portland OR and you said Oregon correctly on the first try. 👏
Locals say Oreegun
The "Sure Shot" sounds like the Super Hard On (SHO)... and the best ones, in my honest opinion, are the Benson and the EP Booster.
Please do use the JTM45 more in pedal videos :) Love you guys.
a technical question. Do I get the same functions as the Benson Germanium Boost (green pedal) by setting the Benson germanium fuzz as a clean boost? Both pedal with germanium transistor
Boosts have been about since the 50s but the overdrive pedal took over. Its nice to see boosts have come back.

For those who cannot find the volume knob on their amps and guitars. Try the Bogner Harlow, that makes a lot more than just a little louder.
Sometimes in a band situation you need a little more for certain parts. Can't always depend on your guitars volume to be enough. I use my Strat's volume but my dB-1 kicks in a lot more when I need it. And I play through a Boogie or pro tube Twin. Both have more than enough volume.
I felt bad for the Morning Glory pedal when the Bad Cat came in right after. Sounded so much better hehe.
Blue side of the Protein or the boost in the Dane are my favorites. Both just make everything sound better, but these all sound nice, too
@Roadrunner_1000 I didn’t get along w the green side, but I do think the blue side is great
I had the pop top on my list but that benson is really challenging that after this
Cool sounds. I have a TC Spark mini and Mooer Pure Boost. Both sound great
I feel like I just got home again - Pete on his purple tele with a clean to slightly dirty tone. Ahhhh.
I always used a boost (as an always on effect) since the 70s. I never came across any amp that would do the business without one.
Pete and the purple tele...I'm in!
Love my Keeley Katana! So good!
So the Benson pre-12 O'clock quietens down, and post-12 O'clock boosts - If so it's and Interesting function. But I think I got the right one when I plummeted for the Xotic EP Je ne regrette rien

Those boost pedals are realy good but this Bad Cat is amazing !
Now there's something that Lee can at least dial in at least well, a one knob boost pedal.
