It’s really great that you recommend pedals other then yours!!! Respectful.
He's confident in the quality of his own products so he simply can. His pedals are great and he has nothing to lose by acknowleding that other pedals are great as well. On the contrary, hearing him talk about all those pedals shows that he knows his stuff. I've been playing for over 20 years now and I've still learned a ton of stuff on this channel.
I like that about him too.
He's a pedal junky. He just loves those things ♥️
Class act
Right... you respect him enough to buy his pedal, unless he advises otherwise! Haaha, that's just another part of his clever shtick . Don't get me wrong; I think he's sincere and deeply in love with audio-wave manipulation, but he's smart too, and he knows that that honesty will also draw you toward his product line, since he knows you like pedals. I prefer this style to any other forms of advert, & it's too bad other industry leaders aren't as transparent as JHS.

This video taught me more about pedals in 20 minutes than I learned in 20 years of messing around. Really enjoying this VLOG series. Thank you!
Seriously, who thumbs down these videos? I’ve been playing guitar for 30 years and professionally for 20. I find these videos informative and entertaining.
Some people are just mean. Some lead poisoning may be involved.
Dorks who think that the Angry Charlie is based on a pedal which is itself based on the Guvnor.
People who don't like homophobic religious nutjobs.
Someone named or identifying as Karen.
Josh has so much jealousy towards Klon.
Rory Gallagher always deserves at least a mention when discussing the Rangemaster - if it weren't for him we wouldn't have the amazing Queen that we were so lucky to have, for it was after seeing Rory play that Brian May asked him how he got his sound and he told him he was just playing a Dallas Rangemaster into a Vox AC30, and so May went out and got himself both of those things and thus another incredible guitar sound and band was born. That's not even to get into all the great music the incomparable Rory G made with that set up!
Pretty sure he got the idea of using multiple ac30’s together from Rory Gallagher too. Apparently Rory would use a bunch of smaller combo amps for loud solos instead of stuff like a Marshall stack. Rory was def a big strat player but apparently he loved cheap guitars like Danelectros. A million miles away has to be one of my favorite cleans from a Danelectro.
Josh, I don't comment a lot if ever on videos but I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy these vlogs. I like Andertons and That Pedal Show but I prefer your approach because you are speaking to me. Don't stop! Listen to Mystery Jets - Curve of The Earth.
Maschinen I totally agree. Don't stop. Also, makes me want to buy more JHS pedals. I like supporting people who seem down to earth.
You guys are great. Thanks!

Yes totally carelessness, please do more
Yup. Exactly so.
I watch lots of demo channels - Anderton's, That Pedal Show, etc. Those are good for hearing how the pedals sound. I like Josh's vids because they go beyond the sound to the "why".
Can this channel be compared with crap like Anderton? Their can't touch JHS's channel evenon humor.
As a beginner guitarist and new to pedals, I'm learning so much from your channels! Thank you!
Hi, Josh. I joined Decca Records in London in 1967 at age 16. Being as how the John Mayall/Eric Clapton so-called "Beano" album (and their performances at the time) made me take up guitar seriously, one of the first things I did was ask Decca publicity Dept. if I could check through the photos taken at the Beano sessions. Guess what? No sign of any pedal! Yep that's not conclusive, right?
Within six months I had met and became friendly with Mike Vernon - who produced the Beano album (along with a lot British Blues Boom stuff to come). He told me that Eric never used a pedal, in fact he first came up with the phrase that has been heard many times since: "Eric just turned the Marshall up until it started sounding good!". Yes, well there's another thing he reminded me of when we were inside the actual studio - it had a beautiful sounding tube desk designed and built by Decca themselves - "Tone controls were tinkered with, ha!"
What reminds me most of the old Rangemaster Treble Booster is in fact old T-Rex stuff like "Telegram Sam" - Marc did use the Rangemaster.....
Back to Eric, he did use a pedal pre Disraeli Gears but usually only at radio studios when they did live sessions it was the engineers there (er, BBC) who did NOT like high volumes. The myth has turned that into the Decca engineers, not true. Mike later explained how to record large (at least 100 watts) Marshalls at full tilt in the studio - that is down to mic placement and another story.....
Anyway I've been a subscriber of your channel for a few weeks and like it a lot. At 67 I still play guitar too loud but not as much as I use to. Best, Pete.
Interesting comment, Pete! Legendary times you lived through. I imagine pedals were in their embryonic period when Clapton recorded the Beano album.
Nice rant, very interesting. I love all those great vintage tones👍
Don't forget the Decca echo chambers on the roof and in the basement!
Rant: 1.To speak or write in an angry or emotionally charged manner; rave. 2.To express at length a complaint or negative opinion. 3.To utter or express by ranting
I don't think ptrisonic's comment was exactly "Ranting"
Josh your videos are so accessible, and so well presented. You are an absolute gift to folks just getting to know pedals and trying to learn. The community needs more people like you 👍 I learn something new everytime. Thank you.
I freakin love how he talks about all kinds of pedals and puts his stuff out there as another option. Makes me want to buy more JHS. Who doesn't own a Morning Glory? Get one.
Hands down : one of the coolest channels on UA-cam
Keep up the great edutainment, Sir

EQ is the most underrated pedal. My super secret tone hack is to put it in the fx loop of a good tube amp.
Mmmm, maybe one before the distortion pedal and other in the effect loop before the chorus in plug stereo out in two power amps? Endless possibilities! Is there an EQ pedal that stores multiple settings?
@@larrybeckham6652 Yes! Boss EQ-20 and the brand new Boss EQ-200.
@@dougiemanross The Boss EQ-200 is so sweet. It's even got MIDI! Do I really have to pay rent this month?
I used to use an EQ in the FX loop of my JCM 900. It could change the sound dramatically.
Power tube distortion ❣❣❣
I love the fact that you give a pretty objective overview of both the pedal's history and the various offerings on the market. You don't just push JHS pedals, which definitely raises your credibility. Keep it up!
I've watched this video before, but as I am moving from overdrive pedals to boosting a cranked tube amp, I came back... And it all makes sense!
Loud is faaaaaar better!
I love this channel, among the best of music equipment ones.
Cheers from Athens, Greece!
I love how objective you are with pedals! Like a professor!! Thanks for being you. Please talk about pedal board patch boxs.
:)
Your videos are the best. No fillers, all useful info.
I like to put a boost at the beginning, and after the drives/distortions in my chain. It allows me either option at any given time, or even both at once for very rare occasions.
Great video. I owned a early JCM800 for years before I learned how to make it sing. Yep, boss GE7 boosting only the level. True beauty. I've eventually switched to a TS808 style booster for a creamier more uncontrolled crunch sound. It's the secret to making the older Marshall crunch tone. I love your videos. Your teaching these kids truth. I had to figure this stuff out on my own. You have a new fan.
Thanks
Lloyd Cole - Antidepressant. It just fits. Lyrics, arrangements and production are outstanding.
Thanks for the clear explanations. I’ve always wondered why I can’t get a clean sound out of some guitars with hum-bucker pickups. Loud is more good, of course, but it’s weird how many guitarists don’t even want the option of clean tones.
I never used boost pedals. What i realized after watching this video is that it's not just about boosting your signal it can also sweeten your sound. Two of my duel overdrives has boost on one side. I used them together and got a really sweet John Mayer kinda tone. Now, i love using one with a low gain overdrive and also with my orange amp's dirty channel. It's like i'm getting new sounds without buying new pedals. Thanks Josh 🙂
I'm starting to binge watch this guy. I'm loving JHS the more I watch the the vids
Same!
Me too, and I own none of his products, will fill the gap soon
Lol same
Do a little research on this guy.
three and a half minutes in and I feel like a genius after being gifted with this knowledge. but seriously, just found your channel - this is a gold mine to me ! Cheers
As usual, a learned and detailed presentation. My Xotic RC never fails me, as well as your Prestige. I use a very simple set up with my electric guitar: a valve amp (a Swart, sometimes paired with an atenuator) and a boost. Sometimes I like to "visit" my Maxon pedals (TSs, of course, and some of Maxon's larger pedals), for sheer nostalgia. I also have enjoyed playing your Double Barrell -- all those overdrive/distorion pedals at minimun gain setting. Playing a nylon string classic guitar I use a clear amp with just a touch of delay or chorus when necessary.
Tony Iommi a Laney Supergroup and his Range Master his a pretty legendary match too!
The way you explain things is very easy to understand thanks for clearing up a lot. Great pedals from a great company
I use an MXR D+ and a Boss OD1. I use EQ pedals after each one to shape the distortion tone. I'm fascinated that you recommended putting the EQ before rather than after. Good video.
I’ve grown to love boosts later in my playing career, where it’s been more about colors than blasting spray paint over everything. I totally agree, yes is the answer to your question! For an album selection, check out Phil Keaggy’s “The Wind and The Wheat”
Just discovered your channel. I have been fumbling around in the pedalboard darkness for decades now, and I have learnt so much in the last few weeks. Thanks for these vids. I had a ehx graphic fuzz, and loved it, now I am on the lookout for a graphic eq to see what happens to the mountain of fuzz and distortions I have been using for years. Happy days
Been using the DOD BI-FET on everything for decades. Live and in the studio. Even on acoustics, violins, Rhodes pianos etc. I’ve recently discovered that it works great with amp sim software too.
This is the best Blog ever! Great for all guitar geeks! Can't wait to watch the next Vlog!
Thanks for the honorable mention among such great company!
You bet man!
Is Vertex still owned and run by the original owner?
always been curious
of how clean their boost really is...
Hey Christopher! Yes, Mason Marangella has been at the helm since 2009
Christopher Hash ...I see what you did there.... Lol
Never thought I needed to boost as I always got my gain from amps. My life was forever changed when I ran a TS9 in front of a crunch channel. So crazy that I hadn't tried it sooner.
I literally haven't picked up my guitar in about a year cause I'm always working. Your videos are extremely informative and you are inspiring me to pick it back up again. Thank you for making these videos.
Dude, you are the Mr. Rogers of my middle age. I freaking love your content, neighbor.
Fun fact: Brian May was such a huge Rory Gallagher fan, he asked Rory about his rig and the rest is history...long live Rory 🤘🏼
LONG LIVE RORY GALLAGHER!
Love the idea with EQ before od-Pedal...
for me: playing Fender US Strat --> Vol-Pedal (Lehle) --> selfmadeBoost --> RockBox BoilingPoint---> StereoDelay---> 2x PALMER EINS head (each only 1W). It's my fav valve-sound for home!
Thx for sharing
(MorningGlory V4 & the 'AT+' on my wishList... I'll be happy in 2019)
Thats one of the single most awesome vids regarding all things amp, guitar, headroom, pickup... you name it. Thx from Germany!
I've been in a low mood for days, and deciding to watch a bunch of your vlogs had made me feel a lot better. Thanks, Josh.
This dude quickly became my new favorite guy on the planet.
Thank you so much for recommending The Barr Brothers. Never heard of them. What a great album.
Offering my love to the TC Electronic Spark Booster (full size). I've tried many boosts including the EP Booster and Super Hard On, which are indeed are very cool, but the Spark Booster sent those pedals to Craigslist. It has really become my favorite pedal in the board. It's hard to find a bad setting on that pedal.
Can you explain further why it's your favorite? I have the mini, should I get the full-size?
Full size, YES. It's an extremely versatile boost. Goes from a very clean transparent volume boost to a range of fatter overdriven sounds. The three-way toggle for clean/mid/fat gives you some great options, plus the four knobs-- gain/level/bass/treble. Highly recommended!
Brad Richter I recently added a Spark to my rig and freaking love it!
@@spinjunkee, my apologies for such a late, late reply. I'm not much of a youtube commenter so forgive me please. I cannot comment on the mini as I've never used it. But I'll comment on the full size one. I put mine in front of a Bogner Helios 100 and a David Bray modded Marshall 50 watt nonmaster, and it simply makes those beast amps even more beastly, more angry, more slutty, and more ballsy. Two things make it stand out above the others, besides the fact that it is a very well made pedal. It is quiet and it doesn't buzz, and it doesn't discolor the tone of my amps. It literally does everything I want it to do, perfectly. I seriously cannot say enough good things about the TC Spark Booster. Hope this helps.
I played on a Sovtek tube head once. It sounded amazing. You dont need all those Sovtek heads. You should loan me one.
pizzamon 79 I grew up on a Guitar World magazine subscription in the early 90’s and remember the last few pages were black and white and it’s where they had the ads. I remember seeing ads for Sovtek amps and remember that they were pretty cheap. Unfortunately, i was just a little poser back then and was only interested in brands that i saw Slash use, namely Marshalls. I had no clue about tube amps, or what they were. I had a Crate gx-15, and had my mom get me a 300 dollar Marshall Valvestate and I thought i was closer to sounding like Slash. Boy was i dumb. Had I known, I could have fetched a bunch of tube amps back then for cheap. I also had no desire for used gear. In short, i now admit to myself that I was a little clueless poser for most of my teen years.
I went shopping for a Bassman/Plexi copy more than a decade ago and it was down to the MiG 50 and the Traynor Bassmaster YBA1- whichever I found first. It was the Traynor at a guitar show for $250. Still have it, it still smokes Marshalls and it is still loud. I play it with an attenuator though. Anyway I still want the Sovtek.
Me too, at Willie's in St Paul
Wow, this was a great episode, Loads of info & I liked the record bit! i'll go listen - I bought my first treble boost yesterday, & i'm amazed, after half an hour playing with it I disengaged it - I felt like I was listening to my guitar with ear protectors on! I had to keep checking my volume and tone were up - the guitar sounds flat to me now without it. now researching all boost pedals - Thanks! p.s. i'm in the future.
I’m glad to see some appreciation for boost. My pedal board would probably fall apart with my MXR Micro Amp
The ZVEX Super Hard On (More Specifically the Super Duper) has been on my board since 2007, I haven't ever shut it off! There's nothing like a naturally boosted overdrive, especially if you have a great sounding amp. In 2003 I heard the In Reverie album by Saves The Day, and it changed my life. I never heard chords with such clarity, absolutely beautiful. I went to their show in Philly and live in front of me I was even more moved. My jaw was on the floor, I realized he was simply using a boost, a few delays and running it through a Bad Cat Amp. 15 years later I still have my SHO and Bad Cat and wouldn't change it for the world. I'd love to try out some of your boosts as Well!
Cheers
CJ
AWESOME DUDE!! PRE AND POST CLARIFICATION!!! IVE BEEN DOING IT WRONG!! Well..maybe not wrong but thanks again man. Love your uploads..
@@justinlangley9529 wow such a cool reply. Why can't we just keep this about the topic at hand and leave the immature bullshit to well yourself. I enjoy reading the different replies of others gear, how they use it and basically most watching this have a true passion for music not a passion for teenage bullshit humor,Good day!!
I love your channel and your sense of humour - thank you for all your great work!!! Highly appreciated!
That 60 second Nerdscape on Headroom was single most succinct and concise explanation of Headroom I've ever come across. Bravo!
Favorite record that most Americans don't know:
Soda Stereo - El Último Concierto A+B
These guys are incredible! And this recording of their last show is a great intro.
Right on! I discovered them when I lived in Ecuador in 2005. I was really sad when Cerati died almost 4 years ago... we lost a rock legend so young. I still can't believe that most Americans don't know about Soda Stereo... I am convinced they are one of the best bands the world has ever known. I bet seeing them live was quite an experience!
Ben Garland you’ve completely blind-sided me here... Bra-vo! I’m from Panama and a longtime follower of Argentina’s gift to mankind. Soda and Cerati made me wanna play guitar. Cerati is still my biggest inspiration. Such a legend! Checkout ‘Traeme La Noche’ (his version of The Police’s Bring On The Night, recorded with Andy Summers himself). Zep and The Police (later The Cure) were very influential on his work with Soda. I really hope Josh picks up your recommendation. I have a covers of ‘El Rito’ and ‘Hombre Al Agua’ on my Instagram page if you wanna check ‘em out.
Back when I had a Marshall, I'd just run a MXR Micro Amp into it. Sounded amazing.
You can even use a Boss LS-2 "Line Selector" as a booster. This will allow you to select two different boost levels using just one footswitch.
How to set it up:
1. Connect your guitar to the LS-2 input.
2. Connect your LS-2 output to your amp (or to your overdrive pedal).
3. On the LS-2, use two short patch cables to connect "Send A" to "Return A" and "Send B" to "Return B".
4. Set the LS-2 mode selector to "A --> B --> Bypass"
5. Set the green pot to 2 o'clock. This will give you a slight boost.
6. Set the red pot to 4 o'clock. This will give you more boost (which is more good ;-)
You can now use the footswitch to cycle through "no boost", "slight boost" and "more boost".
How cool is that.
I love who you are. I love the fact you don't spit on any other company, the way you share your knowledge. Thanks.
After watching a handful of videos about boosts and getting more and more confused, I watched this and learnt everything I needed to know. Thank you Josh.
I’ve been watching your channel for a couple of months and I now own 73 pedals. When I step down on them all the same time the neighborhood lights dim.
This was a lot of fun. I've been considering a boost and that JHS Prestige sound sweet and will fit nicely on my board. How cool of you to run us through 14 minutes of other people's pedals before mentioning your own? That's classy.
The Barr Brothers used to be called The Slip, the record I recommend is The Slip’s “From The Gecko”. You probably won’t find it on vinyl but it’s an absolute gem. These guys have changed their sounds a lot over the years and From the Gecko is like a jazzy poppy masterpiece that sounds timeless and sophisticated yet approachable and catchy
Josh is awesome!
Not only does he basically advertise other company’s pedals he also encourages people to learn how to build pedals. Not to many people I know have that kind of character.
This just inspired me to try a combination of 2 distortion pedals that I had never run together before, and it got a really nice tone. Thanks!
Gotta give shout out to my old Nobels PRE1 up front and my Morley Buffer/Boost at the end of the chain. Great entertaining, informative video. Thanks!
Really enjoying the Vlogs Josh. Great stuff. For weird records try The Advisory Circle - Mind How You Go. Like a lost mid 60s BBC show soundtrack. Anything on Ghost Box Records is cut from the same cloth.
my personal boost is the redwitch violetta delay with no repeats. very gorgeous SUBTLE boost that fills and wars the mids while shelving the tiiiiniest bit of bass. also, it's a disgustingly good delay too ;)
Fun watching your old videos and seeing how much you progressed over the last 4 years congrats on really building a successful and fun business. Still enjoying this older video
Your house/studio must be heaven. Gosh so many pedals amps and stuff old and the new!
The DOD 410 (basically an FX10 reissue) is great! Sounds good on bass too.
yeah this one is so underrated, boost with tone knob and buffer toggle :) yes, please
WOW, u r a proper effects maniac. u even have the old Polish Fet preamp by KOD wow wow wow
Love the lab coat with "brand new shirt" folds because you bought it to make this video
yup 🤷♂️
I have to second the respect for your inclusion of other makers' pedals in the video, it's nice to see in a competitive field. Your passion and crazy deep knowledge make these videos much more engaging. It's so much more valuable than straight up, boring review. I'd love to take a shot at building my own pedal, perhaps I'll give it a shot soon.
You're 100% right about the tube screamer. I never thought about it, until you mentioned it here. But everyone I know (including myself) leaves the gain all the way down, or only uses a very little bit. Then cranks the volume, and adjusts the tone to where they like it.
This is yoda of guitar pedals.
He’s definitely not the yoda of hooking up with women.
Hey Josh, I really never got the Klon till I used it as a boost in front of a Marshall style amp. I use an Ep booster and a Klone clone the most with my Friedman amp. I sometimes use a BB pre and a Timmy as well to hit the front of the amp but am more pleased with the tones from the klon and Ep.
Sleeper album. Supergrass Road to Rouen or well any Supergrass album for that matter.
Cheers!🎸
Yes, Supergrass! I found my EQD Talons to be a quality treble-boost with the gain no higher than 10 o'clock and a wide EQ range to dial in a crisp lift to things. It's treble boost quality works best after dirt, but before a clean setting I have on a Pettyjohn V2 (chime side).
Also have a Mesa Boogie High Wire buffer with a thick boost that really adds some warmth in addition to being plenty loud if you want it. It doesn't get engaged much except for the occasional over-the-top agro moments on an outro or something.
NO, I NEED TO PRACTICE
YESSSSS
Omg this is what I needed, I have no one else to talk to about guitars and pedals and tones, I new I needed something I just didn't know what it was, now my unused tubescreamer is getting the attention it deserves
Came looking for some advice only to find I had watched this three years ago 😂
just want to say I love your playing JHS! it’s so refreshing to hear good enjoyable tone demos!
The most amazing electric and acoustic guitar record. Master and the Musician by Phil Keaggy.
12:28 "it doesn't really matter: they all sound really similar." You just triggered so many people. haha
Nahhh...just the klon suckers
It's true; it all turns to mush unless you get a good amp.
Love boosters. Finally they’ve got the video they deserve! Greetings from Bordeaux friend
Great video. Just when I think I know it all, you teach me something new once again. Please keep the videos coming. Thanks
I love hearing the history along with the technical aspects.
LPB-1 is such a good boost! But I do love the presteige
I used the old DOD Bi-FET OD back in the '80s with my Randall RG-80 as a solo boost. Wish I knew what happened to it.
BOSS MS3 has quite a few boosting options. I like em. High five ✋🏼
I use my boss blues driver as a boost pedal. I have wanted a new for some time, and your videos keep reinforcing my GAS
At the beginning you asked "To boost or not to boost?" You answered that. Then you answered "Which pedals to consider to boost?" THEN you answered "How to boost?" Thank you! Very helpful info.
I want that dylan poster so cool
AND I want to try the rangemaster big time
I use a blues driver as a boost with the overdrive all the way down. It’s great.
Record I Love I Feel No One Has Heard: "Popsicle" by Diamond Nights. The band was only around for a bit - great album! Track 1, "Destination Diamonds". Thin Lizzy-esque dirty rock with attitude!
Lately, I haven't been excited about my GE-7, but seeing this gives me a nice project to work on out in the garage this weekend.
Much appreciated! The Moonrakers for the 1960s is a band that not many people know about but if you can find that one give it a listen. Thanks again for sharing!
I love these vids man!
I "discovered" boost pedals as overdrive when I found out that Justin Trosper from UNWOUND used an MXR Micro Amp into a Sunn Lead head to get his overdrive/distortion sound. It was a revelation for sure.
Always loved that guitar sound
It's kind of funny thinking this guy once was a clueless noob who was that type of person that pestered people about their gear and they probably rolled their eyes at him. Now he has one of the most successful companies for pedals.
That's how you learn though. Gotta get rid of that ego and need to feel cool or whatever.
...only to end up a clueless asshole and have his pedals dropped from retailers. A real Cinderella story.
Now that's what I call a character arch
Everyone has to start somewhere! Don't be Afraid to ask Stupid questions or you'll Never learn! That's What it's All About Anyway Right!
Idk man, at first I thought this vlog will be boring, but 10 mins later, I was wrong, and I realized i am still watching this. Keep it up man!
I’m a drummer, checking out sounds for guitar and loving your channel. I’m learning so much, thanks for the info and your format. Cheers!
King of Tone is a hell of a booster too.
Three words: tc electronics Spark mini boost. (Ok, maybe more than three). I've been using the Danelectro Fish n Chips as a boost, but the switch is too small to deal with.
That said, sleeper album: "From Beyond the Back Burner" by Gas Giants
Merlin Audubon Just added one to my signal and its epic

70s: To fuzz or not to fuzz
80s: To phase or not to phase

Thank you for explaining what a boost pedal does, I found a schematic of the LPB-1 and really didn't know what it was used for or what it did, now I do.
04/2023. Howdy and thanks for this video. No clue what most pedals did before being enlightened by you.. Know just enough to be dangerous now!! Outstanding!!
