- HIP HOP Fan REACTS To ABBA - Chiquitita ABBA REACTION VIDEO
"Chiquitita" proved to be one of ABBA's biggest hits. It was featured in a 1979 UNICEF charity event, the Music for UNICEF Concert, broadcast worldwide from the United Nations General Assembly. As a direct result of this event, ABBA donated half of all royalties from the song to UNICEF.

They are perfectionist in the studio so the recording is quite complex
ABBA sells about 2 millions records every year. Amazing
When you said non- blonde it reminded me of Four Non-Blondes - "What's Up". Have you reacted to that one?
@@guestuser2373 no i have not! thanks for the recommendation
Well. the 2 guys are the girls husbands. They all 4 write the songs/music and the 2 guys 'adlib' in most of their songs. You might want to do a little study on their techniques. It is unique. BeeGees do that also.
Abba is famous for their harmonies. They are the best of the best. These two ladies are absolutely fantastic at singing together. All the band members were famous singers in their own right before Abba. Agnetha was a singer-songwriter, Björn was in a band The Hootennanny singers, Benny was in band called The Hepstars and Frida performed with a dance band singing jazz, etc.
Bjorn was the main songwriter.
@@sleekoduck Yes. He wrote the lyrics.
In the late 1970s, Abba was Sweden's second largest exporter, after Volvo.
A myth that was never true. As a business, ABBA were more profitable % wise. But never made more or were ever second to Volvo.
IKEA
Their sound engineer Michael B Tretow is a big reason why their songs still hold up, sonically (sure, they lack the sub bass of modern music but still). He was a bit ahead of his time with the mixing and layering of sounds. Nice to see someone paying attention to the mixing of their stuff! Another little well kept ABBA "secret" is their sometimes very funky basslines. The bass player they used most often, Rutger Gunnarsson, was a damn genius on the bass. A lot of people don't pay attention to the intricacies of the ABBA basslines.
I studied music many yrs ago and I listen to everything as the track is played. ABBA left no stone unturned and their songs are beautifully composed and worked out. They wrote ''perfect'' songs meaning you cannot improve them. ''perfect'' songs are very rare but they do pop up from time to time in the mainstream music.
The Beatles wrote perfect songs too that cannot be bettered. ABBA also had a magical gliss on their songs which gave them a character all of their own. ABBA are in the top for brilliance for composition which cannot be toppled. They are of the best out there.
There was no such thing as "auto tune" back then.
🎵🎼🎶
Right! Auto Tune didn't come out until 1997 and Cher was one of the first ones to use it. Music has never been the same. Stinks after auto tune.
@@seekingtruth1110 pitch correction existed before that, though, not just autotune specifically. and before autotune people used a voice box to get a similar effect, see zapp & roger's song "i wanna be your man"
@@seekingtruth1110 Oh man - your avatar talked to me! God bless You!
Too many interruptions that could have waited.
Their sound was made by Mikael B Tretow their sound engineer. Even called the 5th member of ABBA. And remeber, no computers or Autotune. Pure voices.
When AββA released their «all-Spanish» album.... «Gracias Por La Musica», in 1980, it was a big success in all Latin America. On the album is «Chiquitita» in Spanish, and it went to Nº 1 in México.......where it stayed at the top for 32 weeks. ♫♪♪♪♥
ABBA was unique that they released albums in various languages.
@@cornwalldragon4617 ABBA recorded songs in Swedish, English, Spanish, French, and German.

ABBA were magical and thank God for that:)
I feel you man... ABBA is something I will just close my eyes and listen to in a darkened room, just trying to absorb all the different elements of the sound. ABBA _is a feeling!_
Please don’t apologize 🙏
People need to understand that not everyone grow up listening to the same music ❤️
That is why I love seeing reactions channels react to music that I love and grow up to. 👍❤️👍
Sending you and everyone love ❤️ from Iceland 🇮🇸 🦋🦋🦋
I discovered ABBA as a teenager in Phoenix, Arizona, but they just weren't catching on there. I heard them a lot more when I spent a couple of years in South America. When I returned to Phoenix, I put Chiquitita on for a cousin to listen to. Her mother came rushing out of her bedroom astounded. The song is magical.
Thanks, Kevin! That little story about her mother running out of the bedroom to hear the song is just one more GRAND moment demonstrative of the effect ABBA's music has on people-- very joyful with this one!
What you are hearing in the background is a countermelody , an adlib is something different, in this context.
The lady with the deep auburn hair is Anni-Frid, but she always went by Frida. What you are hearing from Frida is years of experience, she became a professional singer at the age of 13.
These girls could sing.
ABBA are just great . There vocals are amazing . People try to sing there songs and can't beldive how difficult it is .
People like to listen to melodies! Which is the most difficult part to create.
So true. It is very difficult to sing ABBA songs. Agnetha and Frida are incredibly talented vocalists
No one has ever been as good at music production as ABBA
I went to the Abba museum is Stockholm. It was so much fun. Interactive. They are a national treasure in Sweden. 🇸🇪
Was there too amazing
Thanks for the ABBA. Man these girls could/can sing. And if you do any live stuff you'll see it's all real. Perfect harmony's every time. This song was done for the children of the world and most of the money from it still goes to UNICEF. The snow is because it was broadcast from Sweden.
This video was in Swizterland
February 1979
It was from a BBC ABBA 'Snowtime Special' in Switzerland.
The snowman is there as a symbol of both the recordlabel that is polar and their own studio i Stockholm also called polar studio.
Sorry, broadcast from Switzerland!
There is something about Frida's smile that is just a never ending joy to see.
ABBA recorded many of their songs in Spanish. Chiquitita turned into the great lockdown balcony song in Spanish-speaking countries during 2020 pandemic
This song is straight from the Swedish folk music tradition. You can hear it in umm-pah umm-pah in the chorus and also the extra background vocal lines which you picked up on would be found in folk singing rounds. I've been listening to this song for 40 years and I never tire of it. I like that you appreciate the detail in their songs which only increased with their maturity. Have a listen to 'I let the music speak' from right at the end of their time together. The layers of almost choral harmonies towards the end are breath taking.
My father (rest in peace, dad) was a MAJOR fan of ABBA, and they were the 1st music I heard as a child back in the late 70s. I've loved ABBA ever since then, unwavering. Bjorn (pronounced Byorn), Agnetha (Agkneetha). So glad you're loving this older, purer type of music.
They were there own back up, the girls did all the back up vocals on the album they also did something very new by playing multiple recordings of the vocals on top of each other, basically the girls sing on top of their own voices which gave them a very unique depth to the songs, so creative
hmmmm... not that unique, Carpenters did that... and they probably stole it from The Beach Boys (Brian Wilson)....? ;-)
@@floyd2222 not in the same way, recorded their own backing, their layering technique was very unique and trailblazing
Like Peter Hammill had done before
@@Geburtswehe everyone has sung their own backup, but they did it in a specific way by double dubbing them in edit that had not been done, google it, y’all are missing the point, they are disco the way they mixed and used technology especially for creating double vocals for the girls was pretty land-braking
@@samarakiely2733 Yes. Their sound engineer Michael Trevor had that idea and it sure worked.
I'll never grow tired of witnessing people hearing the outro of Chiquitita for the first time.
more from abba rabbit hole....Eagle (full version) If it wasn't for the nights, Name of the Game,... Winner Takes it all...... info the snowman was just a tv scene the song was donated by abba for children's charity.. the song was originally called ...In the arms of Rosalita... the chorus position was moved and name changed to Chiquitita
Oh Yes „eagle“ is a great song 👍🏻👍🏻💞
Their music is going to sound different because as growing up they were exposed to many many different genre's including Classical and Theatrical. This song has a Spanish Influence as does the Great Hit Fernando sung by Anna Frid, the Dark Haired lady in the group.
This was filmed in Switzerland, the tv special was called Abba in Switzerland and they are outside in the snow. The reason for the snowman in the background.
"Fernando" is a great ABBA song 💜💜💜
This song was filmed when they did a TV Show in Switzerland hence the snowman. Frida has some amazing leads on songs example Fernando, Knowing Me Knowing You, Andante Andante just to name a few.
Was this performance something to do with UNICEF? I might have that wrong?
@@Dogslife_ no but this link is the performance from that show ua-cam.com/video/lsme6df584s/v-deo.html
Thank you Helen!
@@Dogslife_ you are welcome.
Beautiful song & vocally one of their most powerful performances. Their "Gold Greatest Hits" album has just become the longest running album EVER in the UK Charts, over one thousand weeks & STILL in the Top 20.
ABBA has sold over 400 million albums and singles to this day, being surpassed in the top only by the Beatles and Elvis.
And 1 8track tape which i still have somewhere
Because they are awesome!
Hello again and thanks a lot for another reaction to ABBA songs
remember:
ABBA was swedish, two couples that recording as a group only between 1972/1982
You are reacting to Bee Gees too; curiosly:
ABBA & Bee Gees was together in Concert for Unicef 1979
Bee Gees perforned "Too much heaven"
and ABBA presents... "Chiquitita"!
(all songs from this concert donated royalties to UNICEF)
"Chiquitita" is an amazing ballad pop
lyrics of hope, great melodies, fantastic harmonies, a beautiful song!
"Chiquitita was a worldwide hit, specialy in Hyspan American countries
You heard before
"Dancing Queen" (with the two female in leads vocals)
and "Chiquitita" now (with the blonde Agnetha in lead voice)
And you are telling us that the next reactions will be
Mamma Mia (the two girls in leeds vocals)
S.O.S. & Gimme gimme gimme (both with the blonde Agnetha in lead voice)
I suggest you for more reactions another songs with the brunette Anni Frid in the lead voice, to see the difference:
Fernando
Knowing me knowing you
Super trouper
(all these was #1 in UK)
I hope for much ABBA videos
Have a nice week!
Benny and Bjorn, aside from being talented musicians, also produced ALL of their music and are responsible for their incredible sound. There is NO auto-tunes or effects available in the day to make the girls sound that good. Their voices are that good.
If you like the background riffs from this song, you'll like their song "Knowing Me Knowing You" as well. They use the background vocals more during the chorus of that song. Has a very haunting melody as well. One of my favorites.
They donated this song to UNICEF incl all rights and income from it.
hello, i'm so glad you were here again to continue with your reactions to ABBA songs
several things to say about "Chiquitita" and its context
"Chiquitita" is a beautiful song, it has hopeful lyrics, a melody that starts very soft with Agnetha's solo, then grows and explodes in a powerful chorus; Agnetha and Anni Frida's vocal harmonies are of excellence
"Chiquitita" was composed especially for the Concert by UNICEF, it premiered that night and its royalties are eternal for UNICEF
"Chiquitita" was ABBA's greatest success in Latin America, that prompted ABBA to record it in Spanish, and its success was so extraordinary that in the following years ABBA recorded an album with its best songs entirely in Spanish
And some of the intimacy
"Chiquitita" was recorded in December 1978, before Christmas;
days later the blonde singer Agnetha (28) and the guitarist Björn (33) was separated with two youngest childs
(but they continue together in the group four years more, until their last recording in 1982)
This promotional video was in February 1979 in Swizterland, their only promotional video that ABBA made without Sweden

As a Londoner, I am not convinced about ABBA- There are just a 50 Hit Wonder...
You made I laugh, boy.
Thank You Papa.
When I am older I will try to br funnier though in 25 years I will be 92 so who knows :)
@@Isleofskye 92 eh? My 90s, they were good times, if I knew then what I know now...
Seriously what have they done this millenium?
Yep,too small a portfolio ;-)
BTW when did they move the Isle of Skye to London?
And what had the Scots to say to this?
One of my favourite ABBA songs, it's just got a happy uplifting vibe. Bjorn & Benny are songwriting geniuses, the more of their music u listen to I think you'll appreciate their instrument arrangements.
Your observation of the background vocals is spot on.
A "small" detail overlooked by most. ✌
Benny and Bjorn wrote and produced the songs. It would take almost a year to wrap up an album. They were always looking for the smallest details to perfect the song. And Good Lord, with the two voices of Agnetha and Frida, they had a lot to work with in harmonies, etc.
Either one would be chosen as the lead (it was about 50/50) depending on the song. There wasn't always a lead (see Dancing Queen).
The four were a perfect match that made ABBA. It was met to be
I'm a Spanish native speaker and Chiquitita is a little girl. They're talking to a little girl and this song was used by Unicef in those days.
You need to listen to their SPANISH VERSION OF CHIQUITITA...they translate perfection
The clip is just silly lol. It is recorded in Switzerland. The song is great. They do all their backings themselves in every song. Layer upon layer! They pionered a lot in the studio
My favorite song from ABBA and the ending is killer! The backing vocal layers reminds me of Queen! Also their song Mama Mia came out in 1975 when Bohemian Rhapsody also came out and has this line Mama Mia!))) 2 hit songs from the same year with their owns Mama Mia)))
Abba are simply an amazing band that are too often overlooked because they are often associated with Disco, a musical style that some people are just "too cool" to like. Explore further, you will find that era filled with wonderful work that people prefer to ignore because it isn't cool to like them. I'm sure you know Donna Summer, and she is often relegated to just a disco queen, but her albums were also full of wonderful R&B stuff.
If you studied recording arts. Well ABBA is for you!!! You will be amazed.
Super Trouper released in 1980 was the band's 9th hit No. 1 in the UK. For 20 years, the performance placed ABBA in 4th place in the all-time rankings, behind the Beatles, Elvis Presley and Cliff Richard.
I have just subscribed and immediately i got shocked, paralized, almost a stroke when you said abba is a one hit wonder.Jesus!!!Which planet do you actually live on?I'm from Hungary/Europe/and Abba had so many huge hits here i can't even count them. They were by far the most successful musical act from 1976 to 1981.They are still very popular.Wherever you go you can hear Abba songs on the radio,in clubs,at shopping centres, everywhere.
I heard this song a million times but am only just learning about it now. I appreciate your analysis, thanks.
ABBA gave all Royalties to UNICEF for this song. For ever.
The lines “so the walls came tumbling down / and your life’s a blown-out candle / all is gone and it seems too hard to handle” absolutely wrecks me!!!!
ABBA put Sweden on the "Pop Map" - starting with "Waterloo" in 1974.
None of the members spoke very much English, since Swedish is their native tongue - and the ladies learned the text to each song (at first...) phonetically.
Don't worry, Your "one hit wonder" comment is long forgotten - instead, Your enthusiasm for these four talented members of iconic Pop Royalty is what warms my heart.💕
These guys will never be silenced. Timeless music. Never knew who produce them but it's always top notch.
Chiquitita needs to be listened in its Spanish version. You may only get a word of two, but it has an entirely different feeling. Number #1 song in basically all Latin-America countries back in the day.
Bro I'm Canadian your one of the best reactors...just saying !
Bro, you have one of the few reactions channels where you actually offer insights and analysis, not just "Oh wow" like many other channels. Although every Abba song is legit "Oh wow".
Great analysis, like how you realized a lot of details first listening to the song, especially the emotions from Anni Frida that catched you. ABBA is really pure emotions, so uplifting. You see 2 married couples that got all the way from the Olymp down to hell when they divorced ("Winner takes it all" is the keyword here). Can't wait to see your other ABBA reactions!
In the time of this video Agnetha & Björn just was separated
ABBA was a huge hit for us Aussie kids back in the day (1970s).
There were kids to loved ABBA (myself included). There were kids who hated ABBA. And, there were kids who loved to hate those who loved ABBA!
The popularity of ABBA has withstood the test of time, even long after their break up, earning that well-deserved definition of Timeless!
Thanks for reacting to this. This song, I would say, draws on traditions in European folk music. Very singable, harmonic, balanced and with a message. In the end you feel good and complete. It doesn't aim to be hip or cool. It aims to be timeless. I think it's aged well. On another note, I remember hearing about a computer program that was written to predict the greatest pop song of all time. Countless songs were fed into the algorithm and in the end the song it finally chose was one by ABBA . . . called "Waterloo". Give that one a spin if you have a moment. It's pretty catchy. (Sorry, I just see that you DID react to it. I'll go check it out now. Cheers!)
Hi and thankz for your ABBA reactions. "Knowning me knowing you" and "Super Trouper" and "Fernando" are 3 more fantastic songs. You have so many songs to react to from this amazing group with the best vocals ever in pop music!
If was to recommend an Abba song for you to react to I would say, Every single song they ever laid down on a track.
Like a angle passing though the room -long version is a great ABBA song .
I'm glad you enjoy them. They are my favorite group of all time. As a big ABBA Fan, please react to "Take A Chance On Me". It's my favorite song from them & you might like the sound.
Good to see your appreciation for their music! It’s a wonderful & varied music collection in their rabbit hole! Here are a few to try next: So Long, Take a Chance on Me, Hole in your Soul (a glam rock one), Voulez Vous, Winner Takes It All, Lay All Your Love On Me.
Chiquitita: Little one, young one, child, baby.
I used to sing this to my daughter when she was upset, and still do sometimes even though she's now in her teens.
It's such a loving song, written from the heart with the full intent of giving strength and guidance to your child.
I am a different generation as well but ABBA has been a treasure box for me since I was 10 🤩
Agnetha wrote a lot of songs before Abba. But when she met Björn and Benny, she let them do that work :)
I belive she contributed just one or two songs to Abba, one was "Disillusion" the other a little solo piece on stage.
I like your honesty. You say you studied recording arts, 42 years ago when this song came out there was no "Recording Arts" they practiced what sounded and this good is still good today. I really do appreciate your point of view on ABBA, please say it right its Ab as in your stomach muscles, and AH as in the noise of relief AbAh. Cheers mate, keep up the good work
ABBA s music makes you feel good even today it stands up ,they had many many hits !
Fabian, I think you're the first reactor to notice - or at least mention - those counter melodies in the background towards the end of the verse. Kudos. Such a simple thing that makes the song instantly 20% better. God is in the details.
Usually, those who won the «Eurovision Song Contest», were one-hit wonders, so when ΑββΑ won in Brighton (England), on 6 April, 1974, many had already written them off as such. But, Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Ann-Frid Lyngstad, had other plans. ♫♪♪♪
Chiquitita means "Little Girl" in Spanish.
Hello from Sweden 😀🇸🇪 Had to subscribe immediately after this great reaction!!!
My favorite Abba album is Arrival
You're absolutely right about that background vocal...just adds another dimension to the song
That song was used by UNICEF the year dedicated for childten, that is why there's a snowman at the background.
Listen to the song 'Like An Angel Passing Through My Room' sung by Frida, It's from their album 'The Visitors', their last album. it always makes me emotional.
Abba was a beacon of light for the 70’s.
I believe Chiquitita means little girl. They are comforting a young girl who is sad, as parents will do, hence, their smiles and the smiling snowman. To let her know that everything will be okay. I love how you picked up on the background "ad lib" as you call it (hey, I learned something new!) I LOVE that about their music - you can hear it in a lot of their songs. Also, if you're interested, check out the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) with Jeff Lynne. He wrote in a lot of that kind of layering in their music. Especially check out the polyphonics of Ticket to the Moon - awesome song in D minor! Again, I love your reaction to hearing this music - I'm a lot older than you and grew up with this stuff and it still blows my socks off lol!!
best thing about this song: To this day, 50% of the proceeds from the song go to UNICEF in recognition of the "International Year of the Child" in 1979. In 2014, all ABBA members agreed on donating 100% of the royalties from the song to UNICEF.
You must do SOS On American Bandstand and Name of the game And Eagle is totally different Biggest Band of the 70's where you been man lol.
Try out Knowing Me Knowing You, Fernando, Money Money Money, or The Name of the Game --- brilliant stuff and huge hits back then. But my favorite track is The Visitors, which is the title track of their last album from 1981. There is no video, just audio - but what brilliant audio :-)
The two "B"s back to back is just graphic serendipity in that the mirror image of the name would look exactly the same.
I have to say I LOVE your reactions, that you love ABBA and appreciate music!! I found you bc I have been on ABBA kick since the 2 new songs. (Those 2 were played the most this wk lol) I have been a fan since my childhood and couldn't believe they came back after all this time. Absolute dream come true. I either wasn't old enough, or my dad probably couldn't afford (or even get tix) at Boston Garden when they played in either 79 or 80 I think. My neighbor went I was SO bummed. I am going to watch all your ABBA videos....thank you for loving them! Makes me so happy when I see brand new fans. 😍 I was heartbroken the day my father told me they broke up and he showed me the newspaper article 💔. This has been the happiest week of my life in a long time,. Finally... new, real, music is back!!!!! Can't wait for the rest of the album and your reactions!!
Oh,the meaning of the snowman is:
This clip is made for a showspecial in Switzerland during skiing season
THE BUILD UP OF THIS TRACK, PERFECTION. WHEN THE GIRLS HARMONIZE, SOMETHING MAGIC HAPPENS. THE REVENUE OF SALES FROM THIS SINGLE, THEY DONATED TO UNICEF. HAVE A GO AT THIS SONG: SO LONG, FROM THEIR 3'RD ALBUM TITLED: ABBA. U HAVE A ABBALICIOUS DAY🤗🤗🤗🤗
I remember watching this for the first time in 1979 as part of a concert to raise funds for UNICEF. They donated proceeds from the song to a UNICEF cause. I remember upon hearing it for the first time that I thought the song was going to be a big hit & it was. Enjoying your inciteful reactions.
Anni-Frid is now a boinfide Princess. Princess Anni-Frid, Dowager Countess of Plauen.
There are no better harmonies
Then ABBA. Their music is timeless.❤
I don't think Frida ever wrote. Agnetha wrote her 1st hit at age 17. Her stuff was all in Swedish. I think in ABBA she never felt a need to. And Benny and Bjorn were just so good at it she probably was intimidated. They were all big stars in Sweden on their own. Kinda like Swedens best got married and formed a group.
Frida was the composer and the lyricist at least of two songs "Don't Do It" , "Kvinnor som springer", :-)
Agnetha wrote Disillusion with Björn and I`m still alive alone.

More reactions of Abba
I grew up on ABBA because of my parents. Two songs to add to your list are Summernight City and Take a Chance.
Edit: Just saw you reacted to Take a Chance on Me.
I like your commentary about the technical aspects of the arrangements and mix. kudos.
Bee Gees live on “Midnight special” singing “I Can’t See Nobody” is incredible.
I love ABBA sm and I feel like everytime they sing the more calm I become
good reaction, Chiquitita is a Mexican word for young girl, kind of how we might say "sweetie" and what everyone is calling a piano I believe is Benny's custom harpsichord which is why it sounds so unique (the strings are plucked rather than hit like a piano)...have a good day
Hahaha! I love your calling out the extremely serious ABBA fandom who made sure you knew ABBA was NOT a one hit wonder! 😂. You got a taste of this hugely knowledgeable and educated ABBA fan universe. I’m surprised you haven’t gotten a “you favor Agnetha over Frida” comment yet, especially during the SOS video, which you had a great reaction too by the way. So, “Chiquitita” is yet another different sound for ABBA from what you have heard of them so far. Stay on your ABBA discovery tour. I think a good ABBA song/video which you will hear and see yet another style and approach yet just as catchy is “Does Your Mother Know”. That’s a slammer of a song!
