The track became ABBA's fourth Top 20 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 13. It also reached No. 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, the first of two chart-toppers for ABBA on this chart (the second being "The Winner Takes It All"). The song remains an airplay staple on American radio stations specializing in the MOR, adult standards and easy listening formats. "Fernando" was the fourth-biggest single of 1976 in the UK. It spent 10 weeks in the UK Top 10 (more than any other ABBA single),and was also the second of three consecutive UK No. 1 singles for ABBA, after "Mamma Mia" and before "Dancing Queen". In France it went to No. 1 and sold 850,000 copies. The song was also chosen as the "Best Studio Recording of 1975", ABBA's first international prize.
The amount of hits can be attributed to the song writing duo of Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. They were / are incredibly prolific. One of the best ever. Also Agnetha and Ani-Frid. The one thing you can learn from this group: Set your ego aside and let others take the lead when they should. Agnetha is happy to provide harmonies for a Frida-led song. I can't even tell you how big this song was in Europe and Australia. Frida's solo version in Swedish had the potential to do anything to her career, but it was only released as a single in Norway, not even in Sweden or Denmark, and she only did one performance to promote the solo-album, where it was featured, as they decided to focus on ABBA, not on their individual solo projects. This group started out primarily as a vocal quartet so the emphasis was always on the harmonies and the arrangements of those vocal parts. Plus their separate vocal parts kind of blended into one single voice so In that sense they were like forerunners of groups like Pentatonix. As for what made a hit a hit - album sales or chart position - the answer is both. A band usually released an album and a 45 ( "a single") off the album simultaneously. First the single would be released shortly before the album. Radio stations would play the single if it was selling well. Then everyone would go buy the album based on liking the single. Then the album sales would climb and both the single and other tracks off the album would start to get more airplay. ABBA were masters of building momentum for their albums. But it was almost like Star Wars. Everyone was going to automatically go see the next one based on the fact they liked the previous one. But of course it all came down to whether a group could write and produce an albums worth of hits every year. ABBA could and did!!
Hello again! I saw that you made four reactions today Congratulations! "Fernando" is a classic and popular ballad, with a smooth rhythm with female voices in perfect harmony and a very catchy chorus First it was recorded by Anni Frid (Frida) for her solo album (in Swedish) and it was a great success Then a few months later ABBA records it and it will be their second biggest worldwide success (only surpassed by Dancing Queen, their next song) Another good song and hit that I suggest to you is: "I do I do I do I do I do" (1975) (yes, five 'I do') I hope you include them in your reactions GOD bless you
All the members of the group were professionals first and foremost and after their relationship breakups they briefly tried solo projects, but decided they were best as a group as they all made each other better. That is something very rare for a group and almost impossible to find today in music. Benny and Bjorn were and still are musical geniuses who wrote music people could relate to, but they loved to make the music layered. They produced all of this music back in a time when each part of a recording was still laid down individually and then blended together into one track where you could still identify the individual parts of the song. The song "The Winner Takes It All" was not actually about Bjorn and Agnetha's divorce, but just divorce in general as there are never any winners. When Bjorn and Benny finished the song he brought it to Agnetha to see it and she cried and said they had to record it.
THEY ARE A GREAT HITS WRITERS, I UNDERSTAND IN THE US THEY DIDN´T HAVE THAT POPULARITY ON THEIR TIME, THEIR FAME IN THE US BECAME LIKE 10 YEARS LATER TILL NOW. ABBA WAS A COMPLETE HIT TO THE REST OF THE WORLD, AND IT´S IN OUR D.N.A. BECAUSE OF THEIR FABULOUS MUSIC, EASY TO HEAR FULL OF ARRANGEMENTS AND NOSTALGIA.
"Fernando" was huge in Australia. ABBA did a series of commercials for the Japanese electronics manufacturer National (later rebranded as Panasonic). (verse) There is so much more to National So much more than just The many, many things we make for you There is so much more to National And we feel a part of you And all the many things you do And as years go by We’ll still be there to work and care And see you make it through (chorus) There are many things we share with you Together you And National We grow closer like the sand and seas Like flowers and trees And National And you’ll find us there wherever you Chose to wander Together we can make the future shine Slightly ahead of our time It’s National
They were all superstars in Sweden before ABBA, FYI the album ABBA gold has been in UK top 100 Albums chart for 1000 (thousand) weeks pretty much 20 years, still in top 50 this week, Also they were massive everywhere except the USA.
@@eduardooscar309 Well I still say HUGE - ABBA had a number of number one hits and a great number of Top 10 Hits - CONSTANT RADIO PLAY - for many years. More albums of ABBA were sold in America than in any other country, except the United Kingdom, who tied with the US for first place, at 20 million. That is HUGE by any standard. They were played constantly at discos and clubs. Americans of a certain age ALL KNOW ABBA - we grew up with them very much a part of our musical lives.
The four of them were friends and just enjoyed each others company before they even considered becoming a band. Benny and Bjorn said that one night they were all together at someones house and they started singing Swedish folk songs together with some wine. The boys heard the special dynamics of their voices together and they began to talk about becoming a band.
Just loving your reactions and feedback on ABBA songs. You are definitely becoming an ABBA fan. All four members had solo or previous band careers before they became ABBA. And the ladies went on to have solo careers after ABBA too. Check out 'Somethin's going on' by Frida which was co written with Phil Collins. The guys are still a partnership and continue to song write even today for stage and screen.
The ABBA album Gracias Por La Musica was a rerecording of ten of their biggest hits entirely in Spanish and at the time was the biggest selling album in Spain and the Spanish speaking coutries in South and central America. Some of the singles were re-released in Spanish and went to no.1 again even though having been number 1 before in English. The English version of Happy New Year was never released as a single in English but was with the Spanish lyrics and was massive. Bjorn speak 4 or 5 languages and was the real genius behind this.
it isn't a play on other cultures. It is just stories. Songs with a story. Inspiration varies. For example, their song Take A Chance on Me came from Bjorn jogging and hearing a certain beat. It is just the music comes first most of the time and then the lyrics are created. Sometimes it is just by chance. It is Bjorn singing most. Benny is the piano player (not in this song).
To add on to Tango Elliot’s comment, the lyrics would be “inspired” by what the music was suggesting, and Bjorn ( the lyricist) would write the words accordingly. Also, their manager, Stig Anderson always felt that a hit song that would appeal to different cultures should have a simple and catchy title that would be easy to “mention” regardless of the language spoken by the listener.
All four members had very successful careers prior to forming ABBA. Frida was a great jazz artist and won a competition on Swedish TV which lead to a recording contract one album being the one you mentioned. Both Bjorn and Benny were member of bands with both having no.1 hits. Bjorns group was more Folk/Pop, were as Bennys group was more Pop/Rock. Agetha was possibly the biggest star having secured a recording contract at only 18. She had several hits many written or cowritten by herself. She also stared in the Swedish production of the massive stage show Jesus Christ Superstar with her version in Swedish or I Don't Know How To Love Him being a big hit. When Bjorn and Benny became friends and started writting around 1970-71 the girls were their girlfriends and still were working as solo artists.
The wonderful thing about the 1970's and 1960's (and even before) was there was no fear or restriction in EXPERIENCING other cultures. In fact, it was recognized as a sign of respect. In fact, in those days, we were trying to DE-segregate and to come TOGETHER. It was *not* "cultural appropriation" which is a term designed to bring about the DEATH of creativity and artistic expression. Thank you for your great reaction and for giving this wonderful song (and others) the respect they deserve, modern cultural pressures be damned. Thank you for being a force of togetherness and not a force of the horrible present day attitude of "we're different, we can't understand each other, we must forever be separate" which is what modern culture demands.
On the off-chance it has not been mentioned before: Benny and Björn also composed the musical (and album) "Chess" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_(musical) . One song from the album was particularly successful back in the day: "One Night in Bangkok", performed by Murray Head. Listening to the lead female vocalists reminds me strongly of ABBA's arrangements, which comes as no surprise considering the composers.
I adore your interest in ABBA. They are pretty killer. Being a little kid in the late 70s my Mom listened to ABBA while she cleaned house. Great music.
Here’s a few suggestions: One man, one woman The name of the game My love my life People need love I have a dream Kisses of fire The king has lost his crown If it wasn’t for the nights
Dude, all the way from Australia, as a man who grew up with ABBA as number one on all the charts and falling in love as a young boy with Anni-Frid I really like your point of view on ABBA. Can you do one more? Can you do a review of ABBA "The Way Old Friends Do"
I loved your billion questions and hope you enjoyed going down the rabbit whole. This song always reminded me of the Spanish Civil War for some reason.
Very early in the history of Abba, Benny & Björn found the girls as mezzo sopranos to be much better singers and decide the 2 would be lead singers. In very few songs the 2 guys sang part of the melody. This was 1 of the songs including "I Do, I Do", "Dancing Queen", "Mama Mia" & "Waterloo" that appeared in the Australian movie "Muriel's Wedding" released in 1994. To this day, Australians still listen to their old songs like it was recorded yesterday.
There was a difference of opinion about what should be the first single, to be released from the recording sessions for the album Arrival. their manager wanted Fernando, but Benny and Bjorn wanted Dancing Queen. The manger won but both were released and both were smash hits Dancing Queen was the follow up single and ABBAs only US number 1. Although Take A Chance On Me was their biggest selling song in the US by volume of sales
Really loving your ABBA reaction videos and I've been waiting for you to get to this song! I still remember hearing this song on the radio when I was a little kid back in the 1970s and riding in the family car. It was a big deal because ABBA really wasn't a big success in the US - not like they were in places like Australia.
I consider the swedes a very mature and wise Society. Abba represents them so well, being socially conscious and writing songs about the horrors of war. Chiquitita and Fernando both touch upon those themes. ABBA also gave the rights and the profits to the song Chiquitita to UNICEF to benefit the children of the world.
Love your reviews matey, you make me laugh nd I always look forward to them even though I grow up with the music, keep smiling nd doing your good work.
the 70's disco song use to have some historical story-telling. Just like Boney M with Rasputin, Ma Baker, By the River of Babylon or Dschinghis Khan with Genghiz Khan, etc.
"Fernando" song dedicated to Che Guevara, who used the name Fernando in La Guerrilla de Bolivia, he died after crossing the Rio Grande in a town in Vallegrande - Bolivia.
ABBA was sort of a supergroup. All of the band members had been successful in Sweden as solo artists and/or group members in the past. Bjorn was part of a popular folksinging group while Frida and Agnetha had had some solo success. The women had to put their egos on hold when deciding to take a chance and become a part of a group, but as it turns out they benefited greatly from the superb songwriting and production of Benny and Bjorn.

"Fernando" is a classic and popular ballad, with a smooth rhythm with female voices in perfect harmony and a very catchy chorus
First it was recorded by Anni Frid (Frida) for her solo album (in Swedish) and it was a great success
Then a few months later ABBA records it and it will be their second biggest worldwide success (only surpassed by Dancing Queen, their next song)
Another good song and hit that I suggest to you is:
"I do I do I do I do I do" (1975)
(yes, five 'I do')
I hope you include them in your reactions
GOD bless you
Every ABBA song tells a whole story with deep meaning. Love them
An absolute must: My Love, My Life. Check out the TV show in Poland 1976. Agnetha is just...an angel. Leaves you speechless.
(verse)
There is so much more to National
So much more than just
The many, many things we make for you
There is so much more to National
And we feel a part of you
And all the many things you do
And as years go by
We’ll still be there to work and care
And see you make it through
(chorus)
There are many things we share with you
Together you
And National
We grow closer like the sand and seas
Like flowers and trees
And National
And you’ll find us there wherever you
Chose to wander
Together we can make the future shine
Slightly ahead of our time
It’s National
They were all superstars in Sweden before ABBA, FYI the album ABBA gold has been in UK top 100 Albums chart for 1000 (thousand) weeks pretty much 20 years, still in top 50 this week, Also they were massive everywhere except the USA.
No 25 this week
My memory is that they were HUGE in the USA - constant radio play - many times on the Billboard Top 100 - over a dozen Top 40 Hits - and high up too
@@Kairon111161
not HUGE in USA
yes HUGE in the rest of the world
@@eduardooscar309 Well I still say HUGE - ABBA had a number of number one hits and a great number of Top 10 Hits - CONSTANT RADIO PLAY - for many years.
One of the best ABBA song.
My favourite ABBA song ! Love your reactions !!!
Mine too Boy, do we have good taste!👍👍😎😁
Just loving your reactions and feedback on ABBA songs. You are definitely becoming an ABBA fan. All four members had solo or previous band careers before they became ABBA. And the ladies went on to have solo careers after ABBA too. Check out 'Somethin's going on' by Frida which was co written with Phil Collins. The guys are still a partnership and continue to song write even today for stage and screen.
One of my favorite ABBA songs. Always loved them!!
This is the one for me. It’s what put them in the map for me. I was watching TV when they introduced this song to the French audience. 👍👍👍
ok cool tu parles français? Moi aussi
This was my father's favorite ABBA song which always cracked me up because I couldn't believe he had a favorite ABBA song.
The sound of the guns...as they drew nearer... What a memory to cherish.😁
I love this song, because it's about revolutionaries. Not a love song, it has a Big Theme.
This is a staple of the soundtrack of my life.
"Does Your Mother Know" is awesome!!!!!
I think this song featured in two USA TV series, 'Malcolm In The Middle' and 'That 70's Show'.
Requests: SOS, So Long, The Eagle.
Always loved this song since I heard on the first season last episode of malcolm in the middle
My first favorite song EVER!
Great reactions. We loved every song too.
They made a movie "ABBA The Movie" - really nice footage and quite fun
Fernando was Number 1 for 14 weeks in Australia
I adore your interest in ABBA. They are pretty killer. Being a little kid in the late 70s my Mom listened to ABBA while she cleaned house. Great music.
Yes they are simply the best 💝💝✌
Here’s a few suggestions:
One man, one woman
The name of the game
My love my life
People need love
I have a dream
Kisses of fire
The king has lost his crown
If it wasn’t for the nights
Oh yes ! „One man one woman“ is also a beautiful song ! You should listen to it 😁👍🏻
Ask them for an interview and get all your questions answered, would be awesome to hear it.
My two favorite Abba songs are "My Love My Life" and "Tiger". 💜💜💜
Todas merecen. Ser las gavoritas
Please react to “The Visitors”
My favourite ABBA song ever !!!
This song is timeless👍😎
Very early in the history of Abba, Benny & Björn found the girls as mezzo sopranos to be much better singers and decide the 2 would be lead singers. In very few songs the 2 guys sang part of the melody.
This was 1 of the songs including "I Do, I Do", "Dancing Queen", "Mama Mia" & "Waterloo" that appeared in the Australian movie "Muriel's Wedding" released in 1994. To this day, Australians still listen to their old songs like it was recorded yesterday.
i have the musical in my cloud. When i want I can take it. It is ever a banger to push.
The Beatles tops the worldwide hits list with ABBA in at 10.
Abbas Gold album is the second most sold album ever in the UK, only Queen have sold more albums than Abba in the UK.
This was the introduction of music videos. One of the girls couldn't travel due to pregnancy. Hit songs still without touring was very new concept!!
I consider the swedes a very mature and wise Society. Abba represents them so well, being socially conscious and writing songs about the horrors of war. Chiquitita and Fernando both touch upon those themes. ABBA also gave the rights and the profits to the song Chiquitita to UNICEF to benefit the children of the world.
this song always put me in mind of a young Spanish American couple at the battle of the Alamo.
While Agnetha and Frida were active in ABBA, their solo work was in Swedish. Outside Sweden they were only known as a group.
Love your reviews matey, you make me laugh nd I always look forward to them even though I grow up with the music, keep smiling nd doing your good work.
I personally thought that In this video, Frida never looked better. I belive this song was about the Mexican Civil War.
However, the english lyrics refer to two old friends remember the American-Mexican war.
Hard to say, but i think this one may be their best most beautiful song...
but then again, i say that about 5-10 songs with any band i like :)
the 70's disco song use to have some historical story-telling. Just like Boney M with Rasputin, Ma Baker, By the River of Babylon or Dschinghis Khan with Genghiz Khan, etc.
Beatles had the most hits in history, ABBA was second.
When it comes to Album sales - #1 The Beatles, #2 ABBA
Not sort of, WAS!
Check out the Espanol version of the songs. They were all musically trained at university.
Love watching your Uhrba reactions
Abba gold is in the top ten for 1000 weeks
in the Top 100 of UK Charts fore more than 1000 weeks since 1992
(not the Top 10)
When u say who did the most hits or charts.thats a difficult one.i think its gonna be between beatles, queen and ABBA that got the most hits out there..maybe we can even add elvis Presley to that chart??
bro i love everything about your energy man, i wanna beer with you!!
Actually in popularity are bigger than the beatles
If you can track down songs from Agnetha's 1988 solo album "I stand alone" particularly her duet with Peter Cetera "I wasn't the one who said goodbye"
This ABBA song was sung in the movie MAMA MIA by Andy Garcia n Cher. I suggest u watch the movie ABBA’s r in there
This song has a tango version, sung in Swedish by Frida herself.
«Hasta Manana» oh, my goodness, please listen 🙏👍🤗
Agneta had a solo career and a solo album later as well in 2015
abba one of us

Back then it was album sales.
