A monster hit in Mexico and South America. ABBA did an entire Spanish language album because of the success. What is a little unusual about this song is the vocal arrangement. ABBA were known for their close harmony singing and in some of the biggest hits like 'Dancing Queen' and 'Mamma Mia' the two voices are virtually as one. On this song, they obviously made an artistic decision to have Agnetha and Frida singing a little apart. You can definitely hear each voice and one or the other is more prominent on certain words or phrases. These guys and gals were superb musicians and an awesome combination.

"how can you not get into ABBA"??? The issue for me might be more with the radio than it is actually with Abba. It was when the Corrs began to rise to fame that I totally stopped listening to the radio. Radio stations know how to kill things simply by playing things to death. That's how you can get out of ABBA. Perhaps if I were to hear an ABBA song not aired on the radio I could like it. Radio stations tend to stick with what they know is a safe area - tunes instantly likeable. That tends to mean no real depth to the music and with 2 1/2p lyrics. Paul Mccartney once stated that writing love songs was the easiest thing to do. That's why most songs have a very short life. Had I have continued listening to the radio, I probably would not like the Corrs today. ABBA were about long before I stopped listening to the radio.

@@markferrett700 are you always a hot head? Because what did i actually state? I effectively stated that if i heard something not done to death I might like it. Life is too short Mark to listen to dead music. It's not a case of being radio angry. It's a case of not being dictated to by the radio as to what I should be listening to. Maybe - just maybe if I were to have heard Chiquitita for the first time I might actually have liked it. Then I might have shared Larry's enthusiasm. Life is too short to spend time listening to what is no longer liked. For the radio that's around 90% of what they play. There is a fantastic ocean of music out there that radios just don't play. They like to just splash in puddles and not have a proper swim.

    a separate comment
I see that you are taking the songs from
    'ABBA GOLD' album
I don't know if you know that GOLD is ABBA's most successful compilation album.
Released in 1992, ten years after ABBA broke up, it includes 18 of their Top 10 hits in the UK and a hymn "Thank you for the music".
and has the record of +1100 weeks spent in the UK Top100, the last 300 uninterruptedly, currently in the Top20
It is the second best-selling album in the entire history of the UK, (let's remember that ABBA are Swedish and not English-speaking)
I'm so glad you enjoyed this beautiful song
    Another suggestion may be
    "Super Trouper" (1980)
with the lead vocals of the brunette Frida

Interesting. I never thought you would enjoy this song as much as you did since it has a more of a folk style to it. Since you mention enjoying 80s music they do have a couple songs which, in my opinion, served as a great foundation to the overall 80s sound that everybody used. After all, ABBA has inspired many artists throughout the years. These songs are: “Under Attack”, “One Of Us”, “Me and I” and “Super Trouper”.
If you want to explore their more rock style songs you can react to “Eagle” or “Hole In Your Soul” (the live version in Wembley has an amazing guitar solo).
They actually did return a couple years ago with a new album and their staple sound is still there. They’re just great musicians and singers.

I'm so glad to see you with reaction to ABBA
several things to say about "Chiquitita" (1979)
Chiquitita" means 'little girl' (with affection) in spanish
And the melody have a spanish tune, specialy by the acustic guitar
But the center is the wonderful piano, like almost all ABBA songs
"Chiquitita" is a beautiful song, it has hopeful lyrics,
a melody that starts very soft with the blonde Agnetha's solo,
    then grows and explodes in a powerful chorus;
Agnetha & Frida's vocal harmonies are of excellence
It allows us to check how excellent singers Agnetha & Frida are
and what harmonies of excellence they achieve.
It stands out especially when they stretch the monosyllables with great quality and beauty
"Chiquitita" was premiered especially for the UNICEF Concert (January 9, 1979, just 44 years ago!)
and its royalties are eternal for UNICEF
These is the link of the perfomance in ONU
(in the previous you could see all artists join to ABBA singing a chorus of "He is your brother")
    ua-cam.com/video/oMIw_y9uRT8/v-deo.html
"Chiquitita" was ABBA's greatest success in Latin America,
that prompted ABBA to record it in Spanish, and its success was so extraordinary,
that in the following year ABBA recorded a full album with their best songs entirely in Spanish
("Chiquitita" in Spanish is the biggest ABBA hit in My country Argentina)
Chiquitita" is in the Top 3 of all ABBA worldwide biggest hits,
with 'Dancing Queen" and "Fernando", and it's a fantastic Masterpiece
The official video was filmed in Swizterland 1979
, when ABBA goes for a TV Special to UNICEF
It's the only promotional video that ABBA made without Sweden
I hope to see you soon with next ABBA songs
    My best wishes from
    Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷
    South América

Please react to Eagle, the long album version. Very different from this one, but absolutely fantastic. Also great for listening while driving around.
Yes, they were offered a billion dollars, which by my standards is still a lot of money. One of the reasons why they said they didn`t tour much, was the they needed to have so many musicians and stuff to go around, like a couple of violins, two sets of drums and a lot of everything, to be able to create the Abba sound which has so many layers and instruments. The live version of this song and Does your mother know/Hole in your soul from Wembley arena 1979 is absolutely fantastic. It`s the purest form of Abba magic.
Their discography is so full of hits and hidden gems, including songs of many different genres, I highly recommend for you to take that journey and get to know about them more than just the biggest hits.

Time for you to do: Fernando, The Winner Takes It All, Knowing Me Knowing You, SOS, and Take a Chance on Me

Hi guys, just found your channel from algorithms from 25 or 6 to 4. Now ABBA. Have you done Fernando? I was searching something else and wanted to comment in a more recent and wonder about an omission.
You’ve done a lot from the 70’s but one major is missing. The Voice. Karen Carpenter, Carpenters. The brother (Richard) and sister duo, the biggest act of the 70’s. A rabbit hole for sure. Sadly a limited amount but still a lot to experience. I’m going to link a personal video that pretty much has all the elements of their sound and features. The musicality, the unusual instruments the vocals. I hope you will give them a try and let the Carpenters Army find you, they will. I’m a proud member in good standing. The song is Rainy Days and Mondays. It’s a personal fave to introduce someone to them. If you play it I’ll certainly comment with more obscure choices, I’ll let the Army do the standards. I love the obscure great songs for special reasons for each. Enjoy!

    @davemac1197 9 місяців тому +2

Well, as I said in reply to you Ethan, Chick-A-Cheater is probably not even in my top 20 ABBA songs, so I thought I would list my favourite ABBA singles and try and get them into some sort of order or preference, so here goes:
    01) S.O.S.
    02) Eagle
    03) Summer Night City
    04) The Visitors
    05) Waterloo
    06) Mamma Mia
    07) Knowing You, Knowing Me
    08) Lay All Your Love On Me
    09) The Winner Takes It All
    10) The Day Before You Came
    11) Does Your Mother Know
    12) Money, Money, Money
    13) The Name Of The Game
    14) Fernando
    15) Thank You For The Music
    16) On And On And On
    17) I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do
    18) One Of Us
    19) I Have A Dream
    20) Take A Chance On Me
So my guess was right, Chiquitita might make it at number 21 on my ABBA chart after scoring #2 in Sweden, #2 in the UK and #29 in the USA in 1979. Chiquitita means "little girl" in Spanish and I always thought she was Fernando's little sister because the songs have a similar vibe. Great to hear you want more ABBA, so pick any of my top 10 or 20 and you're probably guaranteed a hit that will tickle your eardrums!

If you like a more rock sound then you must check out the LIVE version of Does Your Mother Know/Hole In Your Soul from the 1979 wembley concerts here in London. It will show you just how i diverse ABBA can be. The boys were very influneced and grew up listening to the Beatles, Stones and the Beach Boys so their eailer stuff was more pop/rock. But every now and then a more heavy number still crept in. Incidentally they are now in their 70's but rececorded live a load of their songs while wearing 3D image suits. Avatars where then produced of them. At a specialy built arena here in London is a show with a 16 piece live band and backing singers but them singing live through the Avatars. I have seen it and its mind blowing. Chiquitita is one of the songs they did and sounded as good as when i saw them back in 79. They also released a new album and the tracks 'Don't Shut Me Down' and 'I Still Have Faith In You' are amazing. Their vocal are still incredable at their age nothing lost. Small correction 2nd biggest selling band in the world not just Europe.

Certainly one of their most popular and well recognised songs but I think they have much better songs, as much as I like this.
In no way does it "blow away" Dancing Queen either, not musically, not in harmonies, not in complexity nor layering nor production nor technicality.
It is just some people prefer one style of music over another and so see it as "better"
You will certainly enjoy ABBA's "Fernando" as well as it is also a little folksy but a perfectly crafted ABBA pop song try "Name of the game"

@@fatherandsonreactions Yes could be, but there is no doubting its quality. as pop/disco song.
It is probably the most popular song in the world for getting people up dancing at gatherings, and that is really what Disco was about.
I will be interested to see you reaction to future ABBA songs as they are quite often different styles of music even if they always have the ABBA feel.

The first minute of that song is very nice but for me it takes a wrong turn when it erupts. That kills it for me. That said Abba knew very well how to make pop music, but all too frequently were too much in the middle of the road for me. I've never been able to be enthusiastic for ABBA. That isn't intended to imply those who are shouldn't be. Ok if its their scene.
