Listened to Wolf Eyes - Burning Mind while driving. Had to pullover, had to reorient myself and whip away the single tear from the sheer terror of it all. I blame coffee for that overreaction 😅 but God damn, loved it. Good vid 👍
Discomfort in music is definitely a great topic to talk about when it comes to music or art as a whole, and all of these were great examples (even if I haven't listened to all of them myself), I wanna say that the last official live album from John Coltrane titled The Olatunji Concert: The Last Live Recording is something that's worth talking about as I think it's kinda a mix of disturbing people (even if it's unintentional) as well as embracing the fact that John was going to pass on very soon, so he and everyone with him goes all out with blaring instrumentation that goes on for a while, what makes it better or worse depending on who you are is that the sound is very lo-fi because of a recording issue iirc. Also a whole video on Ground Zero or Otomo Yoshihide would be awesome as well, I myself need to listen to more of their discography because Consume Red is the only record I've ever heard from them so far and I can't wait to check out more of their stuff, great video.
Some dsbm would sort of fit in this category for me. Especially the more atmospheric ones, it feels like youre backed in a corner, by someone whos hysterically sobbing their eyes out, threatening to unalive themselves if you look away. The lyrics are like running thoughts during the peak of the crisis, too. Ppl like Sorry…, Happy Days, Mutiilation, Xasthur, Hikan, Fentanil, BEGOTTEN are ones to check out. Yet, i still find personal comfort from it
I should ALSO add a CW because some album art depicts acts and references of Self-Harn. So if you’re inclined to do that to yourself, be careful or avoid it
Antichrist superstar is my favorite album and it’s creation was full of intentional pain. The band practically tortured themselves to create this nightmare of an album and I love it.
Omg thank you! I clicked because I recognised the Aaron Dilloway cover and then I got two minutes in, decided to check out Consume Red, listened to the Igor Krutogolov's Toy Orchestra version not realising it was a cover and then listened to the original on UA-cam twice. Fucking phenomenal album so thanks for that. I’ll watch the rest of your video now
Black Star got me into Bowie too at the time he died. I liked the jazzy elements, they reminded me of the nation anthem by Radiohead at the time and the lyrics are amazing.
David Bowie was such a fuckin legend. I was only superficially aware of most of his work but I remember exactly where I was when I read the news that he died, sitting at my computer in the apartment I spent the last of my teen years and early 20's in. It was like 2am or so and I read the news as it broke and even only being a passing fan of his I felt a powerful sense of loss, like a figure who'd always been there not just for me but for most of the adults I had ever known would always be there, as if it was unthinkable that he too would also pass. I started going more deeply into his discography, but I remember opnely weeping the first time I heard Lazarus, listening to it for the first time shortly after reading the news. Its such a powerfully emotional song and I still can't hear it without getting at least a little choked up. I only wish I had gotten to know his work more intimately much sooner than I had, you're in for a real treat Jake. They can't all be zingers and certainly not all of Bowie's were, but the man was shamelessly original and a truly visionary artistic genius, the likes of which are rare and number very few in every generation. I don't love everything he ever did, but I love a lot of it and I love the man. R.I.P. Starman
An album for me that was uncomfortable at first was one called Oar by Alexander “Skip” Spence. It’s an album that falls apart at times but it’s all structured so beautifully at the same time and you open your mind to it more when you hear about the artists’ life story. I would really recommend it
I have found that music sometimes expresses emotional states I can otherwise not express, in words or visual art forms, some sort of Gordian knot of emotional complexity that is so weird and nuanced all I can do is point to whatever the music is, and hope it inspires the same in someone else. Uncomfortable music for uncomfortable states of mind. I often make music specifically aiming for that, as a sort of therapy. I end up traversing a lot of genres, but mostly just end up sounding like I made a bunch of Akira Yamaoka B-sides (and honestly, I'm okay with that, that's legendary music).
A bunch of Harsh Noise and Power Eletronics stuff I think fits in Here: Whitehouse Deathpiles's G.R. Estuary English You by Haus Arafna Maybe a Controlled Bleeding album can fit here, not sure tho. Comfort Knife by Moonbeam Terror And maybe Virgin Mind by IRM.
Honestly I adored this video and couldn't agree with your picks enough. But if you ever do a sequel, I genuine hope you could cover Boards of Canada, and especially geogaddi. It's extremely uncomfortable but paradoxically it's somehow comforting too, and I wish you could talk about their discography as a whole Mad respect all around
I haven’t watched the video yet, but “The Holy Filament” by Mr. Bungle and “A Warm Place” by Nine Inch Nails are 2 great examples of songs that are eery and uncomfortable, but for some reason are kinda calming at the same time
One of the most uncomfortable artists I love to listen to are japanese musicians kikuo and maretu. some of their lyrics are extremely intense but im glad music that covers experiences like this exists
I was really thinking going into this you would talk about a crow looked at me, or hi how are you, or maybe even Today I lied down which are also very discomforting albums and really good
Funeralopolis by Electric Wizard was the first thing that came to my mind regarding this topic. That song is literally like the audio equivalent of being waterboarded.
Listen to some swans, I get very uncomfortable and then some crazy buildup pays off and I’m incredibly satisfied. It may or may not be healthy but it’s a great time
For real, this guy would seriously appreciate Swans and maybe even enjoy some of it. For my part, the 80's no-wave stuff mostly loses me but I greatly enjoy most of their work from White Light onward. Soundtracks For The Blind and The Seer are the two best albums they made imo
Colin Stetson is the one artist that will always make me get goosebumps. Songs like hunted, the six, and strike your forge and grin always get me freaked out.
One song I would consider is the title track of Prince's 3 album collection Crystal Ball. Even without the context, the feel of it with the celesta like instrument and Orchestra it is uneasy and almost anxiety inducing... if it weren't for the fact it also gets super funky. It's a song I can relate to due to how uneasy it is for me to think about the future and having to find comfort in looking for something to give me a good enough vision of what's to come.
Have you heard Leng Tch'e by Naked City? That is one of the most frightening pieces of music I have heard and it definitely is an example of comfortable uncomfortable music
When you were talking about artists changing their sound to make something new and possibly uncomfortable, I couldn’t help but think about Scott Walker and run of later albums starting with Tilt in 1995. Some of the most uncomfortable and uncompromising music ever made by a former heartthrob crooner
Great video ❤❤❤ I love Gag Reel too -- the vinyl has a loop on that inside groove so if you don't stop the record it just keeps making that noise. [at the risk of coming off like a snob 😭 I swear I just love his stuff that much]
I really like the album "I Have Fought Against It, but I Can’t Any Longer." by The Body. It's an uncomfortable listen, but it was profoundly cathartic for me during a dark time in my life. I really recommend it.
One of the most enthralling album experiences i had ever had in recent memory was YAYAYI's self titles album. I was intersted in it when I came across this track named \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\6 (actual name), I had no idea how but I became obsessed with it when I first heard it. So I became interested, weird title, long album, small indie artist I had never heard before, hit a lot of the points. The day I decided to listen to it was a pretty rough day, I was sleep deprived during my final weeks of highschool studying and I was at work working late. Since I had about 2 hours + left of work i decided to put that album on while I worked in the office. What I didn't know was that the first four tracks took up almost half the time of the entire albums runtime. They were long experimental glitch hop trap beats that were very broken, but also easy to sink in. I was having a bit of a headache so I was put off by it, but I decided to just let the album run. Then the second and third tracks came in (VERTICAL), a single track split in two. Those tracks were a mind f# to go through, it was even more broken and screwed than the first track and it was SIGNIFICANTLY longer (47 minutes long). The noises were getting to me, the unpredictable beat patterns and noises that'll just come in suddenly, my headache making the high frequencies feel even more stingy than usual, my sleep deprivation making me lose track of time, minutes feeling like hours. But oddly enough, it perfectly described what I was feeling those few last weeks of finals, chaotic mindless anxiety. It was EXTREMELY uncomfortable to go through, but at the same time, it felt like I was being seen by the song, I understood it. Its such a trip to go through, some moments feeling claustrophobic and busy while others were legitimately beautiful, those vocal samples on part two were euphoric. Oh and my reaction when the first part ended and the next started and I realized I had to sit through another 23 minutes of this song, I was dumbfounded. I wasn't having a good time, but I was having an unique experience, and I acknowledged that. Which is why I stuck through it til the end. The 4th song (PARALLEL) was like the ones before but it had more breathing room and was not as chaotic or anxiety inducing. (I typed so much I had to split this in two, I'm sorry lol)
Then finally after those 4 tracks the album went to the chopped and screwed half of the album. It was like coming up for air after holding your breath for so long underwater. The tracks still had an uncomfortable glitchy nature to them sometimes but they were more easy to get into and were F@$&?# BANGERS. \\\3 to \\\6 especially is a perfect run and hearing so many famous songs from the late 2000's to early 2010's being sampled and flipped on their head was great. The energy switch of this album was sudden but also so f$&@#% refreshing, the two halves of the album couldn't be more different in vibes but together they make an amazing experience. The whole album is an underrated gem and is ahead of its time, it's too bad someone stole his most famous song and made it a sound off TikTok called "uhhh" that has millions of streams on Spotify (ITS LITERALLY JUST THE LAST PART OF \\\6 SLOWED). Anyway, if anyone sees this, check out YAYAYI and his self titled album. it's now on streaming and you can buy it off bandcamp (though the bandcamp version has no second half of VERTICAL which sucks). Sorry if this was annoyingly long, the topic of this video just reminded me why I have so much love for that album and I just had to talk about it.

Andree 3000 choosing to make an "experimental flute album" because it feels right is something I can really respect. In a world where so many artists sell out to greed, it is nice to see an artist just wanting to make art. Also, For Emma is awesome. I try to get my friends to listen to it but they are too hipster and think Bon Iver is too popular to be good. Ugh

I feel like you're further down the rabbit hole with this than myself. I have heard of Andre 3000. And Bon Iver as well as Bowie of course. But I've never heard of the earlier mentions. And alot of the music i prefer is reasonably odd. I always liked bands like early Butthole Surfers. Ween. King Missile. Skinny Puppy. Art of Noise. The Residents. Negativland. And many more. The song i would recommend as fairly odd would be... the Tear Garden - You & Me & Rainbows. I don't think it's quite as odd as your earlier mentions. But it's worth a shot. I also make music and dabble in odd moves. Subbed.
I feel like this is why my music isn't more popular. Most people just want everything to be pleasing/positive. Any discomfort and they run away. People need to challenge themselves, so they can grow.
Not really, nowadays is the best time to release uncomfortable music, that song by thee silver mt zion orchestra became a tiktok meme as well as a white house song, people are looking for disturbing and weird stuff more than ever. To the point some artists are doing better today than they ever did when they started.
I was expecting music that makes you feel uneasy. I like that. This is just screeching in your ears. That's more than 'uncomfortable' or 'uneasy', that's just annoying and painful.
i thrive on uncomfortable music so i'll give you a good rundown of some people that go insane throbbing gristle - hamburger lady chrome - jonestown thomas bangalter - rectum Steve Roden - Airria
Dance Tonight, Revolution Tomorrow by Orchid has been my favourite endurance testing album as of recent. The whole thing is only fifteen minutes in total but it's probably the most intense fifteen minutes of music I have ever listened to
idk I feel like part of their success (not that they’re a monolith) is how accessible they are while still hitting that sense of discomfort. I think a big part of their popularity is how they strike that balance
i enjoy uncomfortable art in general, visual and audio and writing - a lot of musicians into this stuff tend to be multskilled and make other stuff too.. very cool
for me dissonant and unsettling music is just easier to listen to and sounds better. when i hear or listen to music that is commercial or mainstream, it drains my energy. it's usually bright-sounding(even if it's a more somber tone), and the ultra-refined vocals and production of the track feels too rigid. with uneasy music there aren't all these expectations and standards, and it's reflected in the sound. it's allowed to just exist as a niche for those that seek or need it's company
I'm so glad i found this channel, great topic and presentation with nice and clean editing. I was really surprised you didn't mention Radiohead's KID A though, i feel like it's a perfect example
Personally, the album "Underperformer" by EYES is an uncomfortable album to listen to. The whole album is filled with rage and frustration towards everything bad going on in the world, but being powerless to do anything about, creating an atmosphere of an auditory anxiety attack. The 2 tracks that really get me are CHOKE and OFF.
Came to the comment section to see someone mention Xiu Xiu. Sad Pony Guerilla girl in particular is simultaneously deeply uncomfortable and cathartic for me.
Whitehouse's Phillip Best stayed the night round my best friend's house years ago and loudly did a Thai prostitute in his housemate's bed when he was just supposed to stay the night there between gigs and not do that. Interesting story, won't explain it all..
"no bars" is kind of poetic in the way it evokes the imagery of a prison.
I absolutely love that!
Having nearly the entire Bowie discography saved for a first listen is some powerful delayed gratification.

idk I feel like part of their success (not that they’re a monolith) is how accessible they are while still hitting that sense of discomfort. I think a big part of their popularity is how they strike that balance
basically every death industrial album 😭😭
The footage of boots jumping on the watermelon is rly not hitting dude 😭
I feel like you'd like the band Clown Core
For the people who love For Emma, Forever Ago, I recommend the album Hospice by The Antlers.
i enjoy uncomfortable art in general, visual and audio and writing - a lot of musicians into this stuff tend to be multskilled and make other stuff too.. very cool
Yeah that first track sent me lol 12:30
just about sums up my life lol
for me dissonant and unsettling music is just easier to listen to and sounds better. when i hear or listen to music that is commercial or mainstream, it drains my energy. it's usually bright-sounding(even if it's a more somber tone), and the ultra-refined vocals and production of the track feels too rigid. with uneasy music there aren't all these expectations and standards, and it's reflected in the sound. it's allowed to just exist as a niche for those that seek or need it's company
Need to hear Commercial Album by The Residents if you've not done.
I'm so glad i found this channel, great topic and presentation with nice and clean editing.
I was really surprised you didn't mention Radiohead's KID A though, i feel like it's a perfect example
Uneasy listening, I think that scans better and I coined it. Modesty aside, good work fella
i lay down my life for you vid plssss
the quality to view ratio is atrocious on this channel. u need more love!
Mom pick me up I’m scared
Does anyone recognize the ambient song that starts playing at 13:30 in the background?
Where is the art from the thumbnail from?
hi jake bucket
Personally, the album "Underperformer" by EYES is an uncomfortable album to listen to. The whole album is filled with rage and frustration towards everything bad going on in the world, but being powerless to do anything about, creating an atmosphere of an auditory anxiety attack. The 2 tracks that really get me are CHOKE and OFF.
do you like cardiacs
22:48 😢
bryan lewis saunders' spoken word/music performances are very discomforting
Whats the music playing in the background at 2:00
Xiu xiu xiu xiu xiu xiu xiu xiu
Came to the comment section to see someone mention Xiu Xiu. Sad Pony Guerilla girl in particular is simultaneously deeply uncomfortable and cathartic for me.
Hi jake
You should listen to autechre's confield
No Whitehouse?
Whitehouse's Phillip Best stayed the night round my best friend's house years ago and loudly did a Thai prostitute in his housemate's bed when he was just supposed to stay the night there between gigs and not do that. Interesting story, won't explain it all..
:)
All completely subjective. I hate girlie pop.
You have nice teeth
1 view 2 minutes fell off
And you picked the most overrated artists in the world (except for David Bowie)...
