The best Level 42 drummer. In my opinion. 🥁👌
No drummer in this world can groove like Phil Gould, it’s what he leaves out that makes him soo special! God bless ! An absolute legend!! Rx🙏🏽😢💕
Phil reminds me of Russ Kunkel with James Taylor.....too 'simple', but, so powerful.....
Phil and Jeff Porcaro are, to me, the drummers that have that natural feel and groove. They can make even the shittiest kit sound good.
This kit tough, sounds great.. That snare sound is superb!
ironically when Jeff Porcaro died the only drummer that I could think of to replace him was Phil Gould. Both TOTO and LEVEL 42 are two of my favourite bands. Unfortunately it never happened. CHEERS!
Absolutely Agree
Phil’s drumming was perfect with Level 42. So much feel, absolute groove monster, dynamic control aplenty. He never overplayed. He was the driving force that gave their songs so much meaning. His sound sat beautifully in the mix. I guess that’s why I will always gravitate to PG more than any other Level 42 drummer…
One of my all time favorite drummers, a true master and severely underappreciated.
Legend has it that metronomes use Phil Gould for timekeeping.
The unmistakable, unforgettable, brilliant Phil Gould. Creating space so beautifully .. Magic 🤗
I always enjoyed watching Phil’s natural left, open-hand technique on the right-hand kit, then he fits the cross-stick, rim-click in to match the ergonomics of the kit. It’s that independence that allows his expression to come through while maintaining the cymbal rhythm consistency to accompany the freer-playing remaining hand. That closing section almost glisses the “Kansas City..” feel, very neat pocket too.
God , Phil has the most delicious groove...I could listen for hours , and yes, I can feel the Level 42 soul. Pete Ray Biggin is amazing , but Phil reaches way deeper inside me than Pete. I would love it if Phil could or would play with 42 again. So sad that Boon is gone(RIP)..Loved his playing so much... The four original members had a chemistry that was MAGICAL!. They were a huge part of my life's soundtrack in the 80s and very early 90s.
PRB overplays often imho.
Totally agree.
And also, I miss Phil and Boon’s song writing. It was a huge loss when they both left L42.
Phil, Gary, and Pete - The Holy Trinity !
Dont forget Gavin!
One of my biggest inspirations. Played along all to all his parts on every L42 record and the only drummer that I had pics of on my wall in my room as a teenager. A big part in me becoming a professional drummer. Thanks Phil for always playing the music not just the drums.
Villaboy - Me too! Always loved Phil!
Oh come on you didn't have Phil Collins, Stewart Copeland, on your wall?
@Batphink Reynolds That is what I said lol
Phil...Awesome, so good to see Phil drumming 🥁
Always an inspiration to me..till date
one of the greatest groove players I know.......
My favourite drummer of all time
one of the best drummers from England
My favorite drummer ever. Luv ya phil
Master of Pocket.
35 years I've been listening to Phil play, and it took me this long to clue in as to what makes Phil's timing so unique...
Instead of "hitting" the cymbals with a sort of rushed sweep, he loads up at a particular position then snaps the cymbals like a spring being released. It gives a slightly fuller and organic splash that just blends in as the song progresses IMHO
Without doubt one of my biggest drumming influnces. Thank you Phil, great drumming as always.
2:46 - 3:06 Absolute genius!! Understated faultless simplicity!!
Unique style! I love how positively he hits the drums without sacrificing dynamics.
Legendary drummer and composer, Beautiful Wounds is an amazing album everyone should listen to
One of the greatest ever.
Those drums sound amazing.
Remember hearing PG with L42 back in the day and thought then his groove was *so* deep. His snare sound was/is the best, and it's precision placement an absolute aural delight - and still is!
His Pocket was soo Deep , Deeper than 42
Phil is still right up there! What a groove!!
Love this guy, really missed in L42 now
BTW this Sakai kit sounds great
A true master of feel...thank you Phil for breaking boundaries. Xx
Very much in the ethos of Jeff P , the song comes 1st, great groove, nothing over the top, just total excellence
Wow = Phil Gould
As a teenager in 1983 I saw some footage of a L42 gig on TV and knew there was something really good about the drummer....nothing's changed!
Well part from him not jst putting on weight but a lot of weight.
@@mikekaraoke probably doubled i n size indeed
ladies and gentlemen , mister Phil Groove
Stunning. beautiful, heartfelt playing. Bloody love Phil.
Effortless brilliance ... master drummer! 😎👌🌴
One of my favourite players, stunning.
So much groove. Love that unpredictable break at 2.40. Together with Jeff Porcaro my favorite drummer.
Groove on Phil, His foot is Crazy on it. Love this Great Musician!
Living legend
Just beautiful playin, so musical, accurate & passionate....you have a new fan Mr. G
Listened to this guy since the age of 13 which was 33 years ago. And he still got that grove. I hope I enjoy playing guitar just as he looks playing drums!
Oh fond memories of attempting to replicate Phil’s groove in the early 80s. Not enough publicity, managed to miss the show. Knew it was a possibility but didn’t get reminders like the London show. Those Sakae drums sound superb Phil.
The fill at 2:40 is outstanding! This is some funky sh&t! Wow! 😀👊👊 Phil is one of the greats! 🤟🏻🥁🥁🥁🥁
If the groove rich drummers were classified as beef, Phil Gould’s groove would be the Premium Kobe Steak!!
Phil is truly an unsung hero of tasteful drumming. ❤️🎶🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Oh unbelievably righteous n oh what n inspiring story piece story line to line lady’s oh you’ve completed this beautiful piece of mind. Phil your the greatest
I remember when a first saw him playing with Level 42... just fantastic.
Phil always Reminded me of Jeff Porcaro. Love both infinitely. We're so very fortunate to still have Phil with us still.
Excellent, tasteful playing as always.
Thank you Vic Firth for posting! What model is he playing these days? I remember he had been playing a competitors 808, or 707 back in the 80's.
danlc95 he played pro Mark 707 back in the level 42 days. He also was a Tama endorser back then also He and Stewart Copeland were my biggest influences when I first started.
He does look like Jeff Porcaro. I was also influenced by his technique in his songs with level 42.
@@M4RCM0NT31R0 I read a quote of Jeff's where he said that Phil was one of his favorite drummers. Enough said.
A lot of drummers are just copyists of other drummers , phil gould is a genius deep groove fantastic drummer. All albums upto and including world machine legendary and beautiful musicianship. Thank you phil.
Soooo gooood to hear and see you and the ultimate groove back ... awesome. All drummers watch this
Feel so alive listening to Phil's music. A true awakening. I would love to get this song on disc or better still vinyl.
you will soon its on his new album .. follow his page on bandcamp!!
Such a good way of putting it !!!!!!!!!!!
Kiddies listen closely. Here that slight spacing , hesitation feel between the hihat and snare beat. This is called the Groove or pocket! Relax and do this.
Hear 👍🏻
Reminds me of, lying still in your arms, by level 42. Love Phil Gould!
Oh My.... what a beautiful piece of drumming and musicianship from one of my earliest heroes.
Does anyone know what this song is called and who is the artist?.
@@skintrock Truly Wise from Phil’s own album ‘Beautiful Wounds’ which has only just been released and why I came across this. Check it out it’s fantastic. The singer is Diana Winter.
GROOOOVE!
Phil’s a legend😎
That Track Tho ! Phil's a Beast. He's got paws like Stallone now.
I just love this :) Phil has been my fav drummer and lyricist for over 30 yrs. This is a beautiful track and he sounds awesome !!
A huge inspiration for decades
Really like this song. Excited to hear the final version :)
Legend
The greatPhil Gould. I've seen you in Venezia too many years ago
I´m still learning things you always knew... nice!
The snare sounds great
Phil is a drum monument in pop & funk!
Master. Eres. Un gran ejemplo de. Profesionalismo desde. Aki de mexico. Te mando. Muchos abrazos. Gracias.
I can't stop watching this.
The song is absolutely brilliant & his playing is totally mesmerising.
Just noticed he switches his kick drum technique between mostly heel down with the occasional whole leg heel up kick type stroke, very interesting, probably adds a subtle dynamic that makes his playing unique. Also noticed in another video, he was using a bottom K hi hat as the top hi hat. Great seeing him play both the right and left handed 16th note grooves in this performance.
laying it it down this sharp is not easy at all.awesome stuff Phil
At this age, he's still fit with those '85 level 42 energetic songs
Still waiting for that album with this on it,2020
Pure Energy
Keep getting back to this; so wonderfully musical!
One of the most underrated drummers every and instantly recognisable.
This is fantastic 🎶🙏🏼
I will never forget you when i saw you in Paradiso in Holland in the 80"s.
perfect pocket ,amazing Phil Gould .
It’s only when you listen to Phil’s solo music that you can see his influence on the early and best Level 42 songs.
Pure gold.
The man! Phil is amazing. His pocket groove is unmatched... maybe only by Gadd.
John Ryan Excellent comment, observation, and comparison!! So awesome to know there are others out there that share the passion for music and groove!!! Cheers to All!
Gadd and Porcaro ! Cheers !
Really?
Not forgetting Jeff, who left loads of space and played just behind the beat too.
All of the aforementioned touch your soul! Biggin is fast, technical and accomplished, but sterile in comparison
Solid. Love it.
Dude has high hat game! It's nice that he does some open handed stuff
The space & rhythmic flow& back beat of Mr Phill Gould is magic! Love this man soo much! Who made level 42 unique! Thanks brother! Rx
Phil Gould is a phenomenal drummer. I started playing mostly because of him. I hold him in the same regard as late great Jeff Porcaro, who, unsurprisingly, was a big fan of Phil. Both exceptional drummers as well as true gentlemen.
amazing!!!!
So great ❤❤❤
No me canso de ver este video. Maravilloso Groove !!!
Feel. It´s all about feel. Good one!
Sweet. Beautiful.
New albums amazing
One of my main influences and been playing 24 years, parents listened to Level 42 when I was young but never knew the brilliance of his drumming until an adult.
brilliant playing
Deep pocket by Prof Phil Gould, always great to see/hear him.
Real life drumming Jedi!
Superb
One of my heros
he is so good
Brilliant
nothing wrong with the ride, quality sounding set up and top drummer
This groove is a great tune off his new album, total ear candy!
very gifted drummer !!
Great !!!
i love his attention to detail. like how he plays his snare ghost notes closer to the rim while his rimshots fall in the middle of the head
Magic 👍
