I have different take on this. I have never really cared that much about people’s opinion on my fandom status nor do I care about fandom at as whole. What I really want is having nuance conversations about anime. Depending on how invested you are into anime, it can be hard to have those conversations. It doesn’t make one any more or less a fan but it’s there are only certain people that I can really have conversations with about Universal Century Gundam for instance or niche Jump series before the 2010’s like Reborn or Hikaru no Go.

I have been an anime fan for years, and in 2025, it is my 7th anniversary. Thanks to mha and one piece, demon slayer and a whole lot more in shonen and shojo and all that is out there. BTW, MHA has been #2 on me top 10 for all of those years, and to call fans of the show fake is stupid

As someone who legitimately has demon slayer as my #1 (and 72 entries on MAL) it’s genuinely frustrating how many people try to invalidate my opinion because I like a mainstream show. They don’t even know what else I’ve watched, they just think Im a brainless zombie who can only comprehend animation. Like, isn’t the point of anime to have a good experience and hopefully learn something from it? Why can’t we all do that without hating other people bc of different perspectives? Thank you for spreading this information!

Unless your favourite anime is dragon ball z, Naruto, one piece, or bleach (to an extent), apparently we're not anime fans.
They swear up and down that these shows are perfect when no anime series has reached such a level.
The first anime I saw was inuyasha. The set piece and narrative themes drew me into the medium, providing me with my love for anime. I didn't start truly watching financial juggernauts like one piece until I finished my 10th anime.
There is nothing wrong with having unconditional love for a series you grew with. It's the shaming others for not liking a series you love while purposely tearing down their favourite anime, that's the problem

    Good video ❤
I've been burnout from anime and there are many reasons for it
    But significantly
    1. Old vs New
Some anime fans who either blinded by nostalgia or newbie say older anime is better and they name a few shows for it like cowboy bebop, monster, evangelion, one piece. But they forget about the bad shows which were came out in the same era like tenchi muyo,1989 jojo
    Fanservice
Some anime fans think fanservice ruins anime . While some of the classics had fanservice ex dbz, eva, one-piece
    3. Seinen vs Shounen
Most people in the anime community don't understand demographics . It's nothing but a sales thing
They think Berserk,Vagobond,Vinland Saga is what seinen is . And a quote saying " As a teenager I enjoyed shounen and as an adult I understand seinen "
Man you can't convince me that asobi asobase and K ON being Seinen have more depth and complex plot than AOT and CSM Which are shounen
These are just my thoughts ❤
    Thank You ❤

DS ended, people started to say the animation did all the lifting even tho the manga kept everybody on the edge of their sits
MHA ended, sudenly it never was good
JJK ended and the last month it was recieving endless praises, now is just another battle shonen
And now those fans are going to DanDaDan, sucks to be a Jump Author
As a One Piece fan, so an idiot
    Please enjoy your series fam
    God bless y'all

I have been an Anime fan for (almost exactly) 22 years and have seen well over 100 in that time from just about every genre. My favorite is My Hero Academia and I just got into it a few months ago. It is kinda funny to me what you consider classic Anime though. I wouldn't consider anything newer than 25 years old being "classic".
Also, I just finished your Anime tier list. Got some similar opinions, like with MHA, Spirited Away, and others not so much. You have lots of Anime on there that I haven't seen, while I have lots you haven't.
And I believe you're spot on with this video.

ngl i feel this about myself. I like a few select animes like death note, spy family, and zom100 but don't like the super long animes like naurato or one piece. For me, I don't have alot of time most days so the shorter the show the better, which in turn i feel like makes me feel like an outsider to the anime genre. I love it as an art form but i haven't seen most animes.

My Hero Academia is my favorite anime too! Outside of that I really like Blue Lock, Digimon, I mildly like Jujutsu Kaisen and I find SpyXFamily charming and adorable. But outside of those five I've found love for plenty of other shows like Trigun Stampede, Sk8 the Infinity, The Apothecary Diaries and Bungo Stray Dogs. People just need to respect each other and know that everyone has their own individual tastes and likes. It's like Ice Cream, everyone has their favorite flavors and flavors they just don't like. Belittling and treating people like Anime Tourists is obnoxious and toxic in my opinion.

the one thing id disagree with about is that i started watching anime in around 2008 and now that it's entered a point in society where it's socially acceptable to watch, picked up by masses of people and not deemed uncool, i find a certain sense of pride and about the fact that i stuck with it even before the cultural boom that we saw around the time that you started watching. for me, that has to count toward something in the context of anime fandom. its less from a standpoint of judging other people and more from a position of "im so excited for you that you have so much to uncover in the anime world", but there's also a level of big-brotherism with wanting to help facilitate that journey. "oh you like hunter x hunter? you have to check out yu yu hakusho", that's special to me. there are definitely plenty of people out there (like you) who probably dont need as much time to become a seasoned anime watcher and be able to start forming informed opinions about anime nuances and how it makes you feel, but i definitely do think that most people are able to quantify their anime fandom through how long they've been a fan/watching, and if they watched BEFORE it was cool, even though that sounds lame

There is nothing wrong with watching shonen. Most people grow up primarily watching shonen. I grew up watching TB3 and much more. One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball and Full Metal Alchemist. But only watching shonen is like calling yourself a gamer while only having played console games. The PC gamers will obviously look down on you and it’s the same with otaku. You need to build up your nerd cred. Seinen, Shoujo, Josei, Mecha, Moe, Isekai, Ecchi, Yaoi, Yuri and Slice of Life. You need to experience this and a lot more. Calling yourself an anime fan while only having watched 3-4 shows is laughable especially if it’s all shonen.
There is also a difference between a literal anime fan and a cultural anime fan. A literal anime fan refers to someone who enjoys Japanese animation. But if I were to show my father a scene from One Punch Man and he expresses apreciation over the animation and fight choreography. Does that make my dad an anime fan? Seems like a pretty low bar. A Cultural anime fan is someone believes in the values that are typically ascribed to hardcore anime fans aka otaku. The modern nomenclature is weeb but I am old school. Do you read manga & light novels? Do you collect anime figurines? Do you play eroge visual novels? Do you assemble gundam models? Do you watch hentai or read doujinshi? Do you strongly believe in free speech & freedom of expression? Are you a shotacon or lolicon? Are you a fujoshi who is obsessed with BL? Do you watch vtubers? Do you have an Oshi? Do you listen to nightcore/lofi or download anime original soundtracks? Do you have a favorite Japanese band or manga artist? Have you memorized the names of all the animation studios? Have you watched so much anime that you're practically learning Japanese? Do you watch anitubers? Do you watch/make AMV's? Do you have a MyAnimelist account? Do you check the seasonal anime releases? Do you actively partake in discussions about anime & manga?
Anime has become a lot more mainstream in the recent decade. With the majority of people gravitating towards the more popular stuff which just so happens to be shonen. This has created a lot of bloat in the community. All of these new people suddenly think their anime fans without having acclimated themselves to the culture. Which creates a lot of issues. If you identify as an anime fan and unironically use the word gooner. Then you’re a poor excuse for an anime fan. Its perfectly fine to dislike an overabundance of sexualized fan service. But to shame other anime fans for enjoying sexual themes is a strong indicator that you lack the cultural values of an anime fan. Cultural Marxism has also begun to force its way into the anime space. Which has resulted in an ongoing culture war.
Back when anime was more niche, you would get bullied in school for liking it. The perception around anime was skewed. Either being misconstrued as weird Japanese tentacle porn or due to the Wests bias towards animation as a whole, it was looked down upon as something relegated to children. The United Nations tried banning anime (multiple times) but luckily nothing came of it. The Australian government successfully banned all hentai under the faulty premise that it promoted pedophilia. They didn’t site any studies by the way. There is a lot more censorship I could mention. This has naturally created a sort of push back with a significant effort put into gatekeeping the community, which has also resulted in the usage of the word anti. Do you shame other anime fans for liking fan service? Do you find trap characters offensive? Do you defend politically biased localizations? Do you call lolicons/shotacons pedophiles? Do you support censorship? Do you force your head cannon on other people? If you say yes to any of these, then you are an anti. Having a diverse range of opinions is good but some opinions are just not acceptable because they negatively impact the community. Imagine a community that advocates for world peace but then suddenly a whole bunch of new people join. These new members then promote the idea of peace through war. Primarily by starting proxy wars with dictatorships around the world. All in the effort to achieve peace by removing authoritarianism. Which just so happens to require funding the military industrial complex and involuntary conscription. Basically by introducing large influxes of people, there is no quality control and erroneous values begin negatively influencing the community.

What we should hope is that newer stuff is better because they are learning from the older generation. If that’s not happening then we are doomed in media and story telling.

I don't think you are new to anime, I just don't agree with your taste in anime! For example, MHA is probably my least favorite manga/anime of all time, but that's my own personal opinion. Sure, I can point out why I dislike it, but I won't be upset if someone does. If you enjoy MHA? Good for you, be happy with your choice, just know that not everyone will agree with you. As long as you don't try to call my taste trash, I won't do the same.
Fun fact, people can agree to disagree! My two favorite anime are HxH and Yu Yu Hakusho, while one of my best friends hates HxH, and refuses to watch YYH. We just have to agree to disagree, but most people aren't willing to do that, especially on the internet.

Gotta bust your chops a bit, but while 150 is decent, thems still rookie numbers, brother. Let me know once you hit 500+, then we'll talk. ;P
Busting your chops aside, if you want a good true definition for these:
    An anime tourist:
Someone with passing interest in animu that wants all animu to change to fit their taste and sensibilities, because many Japanese concepts and tropes are foreign and weird to them. Really only enjoying anime made to have the broadest appeal possible. Basically, to take the Japanese culture out of it, keep the artstyle, and make culturally western or generic style storytelling.
Some would say that being anti-lolicon makes you a tourist, but that's false as it's looked down upon in Japan by the vast majority, seen as creepy and weird. It's only a small but vocal minority that push it.
    A fake-fan:
Someone who doesn't really watch or follow (much or at all), but will wear the merch and be super vocal about their opinions on it, no matter how factually incorrect they are.
    An anime newbie:
I'd say is someone that has only watched 10-15 or less series, of very narrow genre range (mostly shounen/shoujo action/romance anime), and doesn't know just how broad anime can truly be if they really dive in and explore different genres.
It's fine to be a fan of mostly shounen animu. There are many different genre of animu, just like any other storytelling medium. Not everyone is into slower paced dramas with moral ambiguity and a bittersweet or sad ending. Some people want something flashy with a feel good ending, but it's definitely good to broaden your horizons.
While style-over-substance can be argued when it comes to shounen/shoujo animu, it really depends on the writers more than their choice of genre. It may be fair to say that kids stuff is less likely to have substance, but I find that to be less true when it comes to Japanese writing, because they don't treat kids like they're stupid in their culture as much as we do here. They're very independent from a young age over there comparative to here in the west.
All in all, I liked the video. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. God bless, brother. See you around on Twitter.

Half the people calling fans of popular shows fake aren't even old enough to remember when anime only aired late at night or on obscure channels. People are so quick to forget that without those popular titles, they would still be getting dunked in toilets and called a nerd for being fans at all.
