I play with no crosshairs too (w/o VATS always on very hard), just gotta pay attention to where your gun is swaying. The linear story does suck though, which is why I almost never play the story but I like both games pretty much equally. They both have pros and cons over one another. Even though I never grew up playing the original games, after all I've seen about them, I'd say fallout 3 was a breath of fresh air. It tells it's own story with few connections to the previous games. I've seen some people complain about super mutants being in DC and while we got an explanation for them, I can see them being there without it, the ending of fallout did say the Masters army scattered to the east and after 120 or so years, it shouldn't be a surprise they're here. Same with the Brotherhood and enclave, both factions would have some interests in the DC area and with the NCR expanding, they would both want to seek far away territory.
I also love how you can find schematics and build handmade weapons, for a post apocalyptic series this would be a no-brainer. The only problems I have with the game are the companions, most companions don't have much personality or individuality. In combat, they use generic dialog instead of anything unique like "Watch your head" etc. When it comes to the landscape, fallout 3 knocked it out of the park. It's barren, it's wide and there's plenty of hidden stashes and dark stories to tell.
That's pretty much what I have to say for the most part, the rpg aspects, while at bit lacking, were still there and still felt like it was an rpg.

    • @lucifer2b666
      @lucifer2b666 Рік тому +1

I'm forgiving of the companions cause fallout 1's companions are even more lack luster. They have one dialog tree and then they enter your party. So it's cool with me that most of the companions in fallout 3 are just there. They all have stories tho even if they're pretty lack luster. Charon, Fawks, Butch and Clover all have pretty decently complex stories behind them that make them somewhat unique. Butch and Charon especially. Jericho is just cool cause he's a raider and clearly he's based off Ian in fallout 1 as a silent killer bad boy type. I haven't ever rolled with star paladin cross in all my years of playing fallout 3 so Idk if her story is good or not. Dogmeat and RL-3 are clearly not meant to really have a story behind them. So the only lack luster one is Jericho and tbh Clover is not too relatable but I do roll with her a decent bit cause she reminds me of my girlfriend. XD LOL Kidding.

The atmosphere for fallout 3 is still one of my favorite out of all the ones I played, the retro radio station and the eerie OST, mixed with the 1950s retro futurism backdrop set in a open world post apocalypse was something else at the time, not to mention the random encounters/side quest while trying to find rare schematics, weapons, armor etc was some of the most fun I had in gaming, like I vividly remember trying to find nuka cola quantum by simply exploring the capital wasteland only to find a small family who were secretly inbred cannibals because i thought they might have some quantum stashed away

After playing it I really fell in love with the 50s turned ruined style and since played new vegas and 4. I don't really play for the story as much as the abandoned 50s. The radio is such a vibe too.

After 76 3 and even 4 will always be close to fallouts as possible.
4 was good atom punk vibes which few games had at the time. It popularized the genre a bit.
3 walked so new vegas could run (then crash lol).
I liked 3 because of the everything BUT story and lore.
-atmosphere is an atmosphere so toxic and irradiated it's dark not sunny and green filters. Everywhere is abandoned or has hostiles everywhere. People and creatures doing the worst things to survive day to day. Unable to leave because of all the radiation that even the water will kill you. Which is what the main goal was to restart life via water. Water cycle rain takes rads to the sea washes away from buildings and eventually clean rain water to restart settlements and crops instead of trying to scavenge day to day.
-layout great as well. Large underground metro. Blocked off walls from debris of collapsed buildings. Basically the middle east. Rubble and sand everywhere but not many friendly people in sight.
-setting was well made. 200+ about what 10 20 years after bombs fell??? Everything is still in shambles but certain things have become fortified. Washington D.C. The epitome of American democracy and capitalism. Bombed to hell with everyone fighting no one working together and toxicity all around. All fighting for control over life aka water filter that can rebuild society but also have them on top.
-enemies also great. Psychopathic settlers some even larping as heroes and villains. Mutants raiders mutated creatures and fire ants all around. Several mercenary factions good and some raw and unfiltered who will do anything for the right price.
-visuals. Not the best but still fitting. Limited graphics and structures work to show how destroyed the city was.
-dlc again story aside great. Alien futuristic ideas from the 60-70's of what alien tech would look like as well as the aliens. Big steelworks factory city the pitt. Island thats mostly rural cept for a few areas mostly untouched by the toxic rads. Simulation of an Alaskan fight during the war. And a post game epilogue of sorts.
-weapons are fitting. From makeshift armors and weapons to more high end high tech higher grade weapons. Since D.C. is the capital they would've had tons of military supplies and especially weapons.
-perk lvl up system and mechanics were good. Tuned in NV it was really good in 3 with karma system and unlocked perks with requirements for level and special stats.
-customization was a bit rudementary but good. Customize character a bit. Customize the player home the main base at the tenpenny tower hotel or at megaton.
-quest system was also eh but fun. Several choices and outcomes. The main storyline was trash but still side quests were great earning different rewards from the quests.
My main gripe was 4 broke cannon alot and 76 just made a cheap cookie cutter MMO cash cow with a fallout skin. But 3 had something to the point that after 2 and 3 enclave were no more in new vegas and above.

Much like with Fallout 4 you really can't call Fallout 3 a bad game, it is entertaining, people at bethesda know game design. However it is certainly not the direction the series should have been taken in. Fallout 3's impact carries all the way into 76 and more importantly it's impact can be felt on the community. We can't fight history or facts; for the vast majority of people their first impression of Fallout was either 3, 4 or New Vegas wich was also influenced by 3 (without mentioning the fact it was built using 3 as a framework). Wether for good or bad, FO3's impact is undeniably huge, maybe even bigger than that of the original games.

Almost the whole gaming world has moved to first person action adventure play style and unless they really leaned into the turn based RPG side of the older games I don't think they would still be around today. Nobody is talking about the first two games today and there's a reason for that but you still see videos like this about 3 and NV all the time. Fallout 3 was my first main entry Fallout game. I'd rented Brotherhood of Steel once and played it with a friend for a couple of days, but that was it. By my friends' near-unanimous agreement that Fallout was a great series, and that I'd totally like Fallout 3, I rented it and played it when it first came out. I absolutely hated it, and I made my complaints known without any sort of filter. The gameplay was still and janky, I absolutely detested VATS for a number of reasons, the writing was bland at best, the player-character wasn't actually the main character until like the last hour of the story, the overworld was bland, which I had to explain the difference between bland and barren to point out that yes, I actually do understand what they were going for, they just missed the mark, and of course, there was the ending. I accidentally beat the game while waiting for it to get good like everyone kept promising that it would. My character died, the credits rolled, and that was the end of the story.
I returned it, and never played it ever again.
Until I was told years later that the PC version is better because I can mod my way around my problems. So, I bought it on PC, and was shown a bunch of mods by a bunch of people that did absolutely nothing to solve my issues with the game. This was before Steam instituted its refund policy, so I was stuck with it. Similar thing happened with New Vegas too; the game came out, I was told it was better than FO3 in every way, I rented it, it absolutely sucked, and I never rented it ever again. I was however convinced years later to buy it for $4 on Steam, and that mods could totally help solve my problems with the game, but of course, mods did not solve my problems with the game. I currently have almost 1,200 hours in Fallout 4 on PC though.
Fallout 3 sucks, Fallout: New Vegas sucks, Fallout 4 should be renamed Build Your Own Fallout because of how many mods it needs to be fun, but at least it's a good framework, unlike the other two.

Classic fallout is able to flesh out the story and player choice more due to their simpler gameplay while the Bethesda games are able to create a more engaging gameplay loop but must limit the player choice and the srories scope due to how much more labor intensive and costly it is to flesh out a fully 3D world. The linearity of F3 is overstated. That only applies to the main quest. There are tons of other choices you can make. And the exact same is true for the first two games, so people adding that to the list of "it's not a true Fallout game" are hypocrites. There's a similar idea about the "lack" of choices in F4.
