      I wasn't a part of your survey, but I was exposed to Fallout 3 first, and though I played that game and I beat it, it wasn't anything to write home about in my eyes, it was just me you know another Bethesda game who cares, then I tried new vegas, well here's the issue with new vegas, I could not get into it, it just wasn't compelling to me, and it's really weird seeing comments nowadays of people praising that game for being so damn amazing, but I just couldn't get into it myself, and I thought to myself why the hell do I not like this game, then Fallout 4 came out and I fucking love that game, here's the thing though I'm also a Elder Scrolls player but more specifically I'm a Skyrim player, I have over 10,000 hours in Skyrim alone, that's quite a bit of fucking hours of my life being put in one fucking game, in fact I didn't play Fallout 4 up until a year and a half ago, yes I waited that long in order to play Fallout 4, now I will admit there are some issues that Bethesda just left in there that have ultimately soured some of that experience, but with mods and fixes and shit like that found all over the internet, I have been able to play some stable playthroughs, and I've been able to significantly improve my experience in the game, now I still struggle with the downtown Boston area of that game and that's always dog shit to me, Bethesda let's just say they are terrible at optimization and they always think so big on something and yet they don't think of how it's going to work for the hardware that they are recommending for the game, my PC is slightly above their recommendations to play the game and I still struggle with performance issues in that damn game, but here's the thing outside of all the other issues that Bethesda games in general have when it comes performance and bugs and other issues like that, those issues suck yes but besides all that nonsense, I really do love the story I love the gameplay loop, I love the freedom it has and the choices that I can make, now as I said before I couldn't get in the new vegas, it was just too lackluster for me to get into, and I felt the same way about Fallout 3 and I finished that game, I think at the time I was just desperate and I didn't have any other good games and that's why I finished it, with New Vegas I think I had better games as the result at the time and I just played those over playing new vegas, eventually I gave my 360 away to my nephew and never did play that game, oh well.
      Now I have a pc, and I did buy some older Bethesda games, but I have found they are much more problems than they are worth, I mean I can mod my Fallout 4 okay, but going to the far older games, the file structure in the way the mods are set up are way different in comparison, I tried to play Morrowind and that game is a pain in the ass to mod in comparison, not to mention I'm a controller player, you can't comfortably play uncontroller on that old ass game, cuz it didn't have the built-in controller support like the modern Fallout 4 does or Skyrim does, this is where PC gaming suddenly became a good thing when they started allowing controllers to fucking work and not like a mixed bag of broken software that may or may not work for your controller, it actually fucking works that'll be the new Todd Howard saying when they fix their broken engine LOL.
      Anyway I've made this post long enough, good day to you sirs.

    I think another thing to note is the audience you poll. No criticism here and although I do believe this channels audience is a lot more moderate, I think for the style of videos you make it tends to attract those that tend to prefer NV (Myself included). I wonder what the poll would look like if so the same questions were asked on some of the FO subreddits, or other youtubers who tend to show a lot of praise towards 3 or 4.
    Some thoughts on the poll in general it's mostly what I expected but there were some notable things I did not expect. Namely favorite Wasteland. I thought Appalachia would steamroll there due to the diverse landscape, and unique locals, mixed with some great music. Likewise I was surprised at the story opinion of 76 as it was one of the better parts of the game along with its map even at launch. In general the poll was hard for me as I can't deny I love the gameplay of FO4/76 as well as the story building I can do with settlements, but I can't deny my love of NV's story so I found myself conflicted there.
    Good polling though.

    Fallout 3 was my first and it was my favorite. My family got New Vegas and for a variety of reasons I didn’t really like New Vegas. So I just played 3. But eventually next gen came out and I didn’t really keep the last gen consoles with I got the new ones. Selling them to get a bit of money back to offset the cost of the new consoles even just a little felt like the smart thing to do. But as most of us know Backwards compatibility was not a thing yet and this marked the end of my fallout journey. Until Fallout 4. I fell in love with 4 when I got It for Christmas and played it religiously and it quickly became my favorite. Then mods came out and that just made me love it even more. But as Fallout 4 is lets be real, built like shot I eventually grew out of favor from a mox of just being bored or mods even small one would conflict the hell out of each other which caused a lot of having to make a new game. But that was a while ago and now I don’t go crazy with mods and the way they did power are and the fact the T-60 is my all time favorite power Armor I still play it constantly. But I do have some issues or more like nitpicking and personally preferences. But Ill talk more on that in just a sec. Eventually Xbox added Backwards compatibility and the very first thing I did was pick up Fallout 3 and quickly realized why it was my favorite. Booting 4 to second place. Maybe it was because it was my first but I have a better time playing through 3. I like the characters more, the weapons, the location etc… But now because of BC I finally decided to get New Vegas but this time all the reasons that kept me from enjoying it were by this point gone and I was finally able to do a proper full play through of NV, DLC and all and I realized what I was missing. I adored Fallout New Vegas. I loved everything about it and I love the NCR drip. But at this point I still didn’t know where to fully place it. This wouldn’t come until early 2022 that after talking with some friends I would fully do a back to back between Fallout 3 and New Vegas to finally settle it. I love both but this is where NV took the title of my favorite. Towards the end of my 3 play through I was getting burned out and quickly losing interest. I of course did all the DLC but what started to annoy me is how 3 DLC really loves the gimmick of taking your weapons away and of course anchorage is well anchorage and towards the end I really wanted to leave. I didn’t even do Mothership Zeta because by this point I had enough. And ended my play through. I still loved 3 and I was playing it on the grounds it was my favorite currently. Instead of taking a break I jumped into NV the next morning and did absolutely everything just like 3 but unlike 3 I didn’t get burned out. Everything was better especially the DLC I really loved the NCR as always I explored everywhere and unlike Fallout 3 I was not feeling burnt out. I was wide eyed and bushy tails from beginning to end proving to myself that NV is better and is now my favorite Fallout. Still love 3 and it is second place with 4 still in 3rd for 3 I just have to take breaks. 76 hated it when it came out and never touched it again but I will finally in just a little bit just got to get myself in the headspace. One thing I came to realize is that I think the older graphics on 3 and NV have a certain charm to them that the new ones don’t. They just make the world feel more apocalyptic. Like Im thinking and I know its stupid and nobody would probably like this Idea but I kinda want 5 to purposefully go back to the graphics of 3 and NV. I actually want them to go backwards. It’s just 3 and NV have a certain feeling 4 doesn’t. But Ive already written a book so I’ll leave it here.

    Totally forgot to fill out the survey this time.
    Started with 3, then NV which has shown me how modern Fallout should be done (and is still my favorite). Over time, especially after 4, I got more and more annoyed by Bethesda Fallout and then got into 1 & 2. Now a big fan of classic Fallout (partly thanks to F2 total conversion mods) and while I do love NV I think F2 is superior in terms of gameplay (yes I love the isometric style).
    Edit: Wait, these are the results of the survey at the end of last year? totally forgot about that, but I did take part.

    Honestly, I'd assume that a sudden spike in people deciding they didn't like Fallout 3 anymore may or may not be due to being told how to think by a certain youtuber with millions of subscribers.
    If a particular clickbait-titled Fallout 3 video from a video essayist that gained a lot of traction was never released, I'd be curious to see how many people from the fanbase still viewed Fallout 3 as a good game.
    Just a curious little thing to consider.

      Actually it's because it's the only game I can't even get to run on modern hardware without needing to own New Vegas (thank you Tale of Two Wastelands for fixing the issue by running it through the better New Vegas engine) plus while the other main titles of 1, 2 and 4 all have some unique things that grab my attention, Fallout 3 just feels like an inferior version of New Vegas after awhile. That's why it's my least favorite

      I often wonder the same. It actually due to not aging well, its honestly one of those “great games that actually sucks” and is a pain in the ass to pkay when going back to it, plus its also got a “ticking time bomb” problem, in which play it to long it auto crashes infinitely, with no solution other than patching. In fact, that last bit wasnt solved until bethesda discovered the error during skyrims development.
      It had very few side quests. No reason to explode any of its dungeons, in fact, most people used a guide to visit places with x or y bobblehead or skill book rather than any reason to find the dungeon on there own. The sky was always a sickly green for no reason(even nuclear fallout would make no sense), little lamplight was a horrible thing to put up with. Your character even was more in line with a gary stu/mary sue with how rapidly everyone automatically trusts you and even the brotherhood of steel give you instant power armor training on first arrival.
      And none of the story or locations make any sense. It was fun at first to screw around and blow up a million bottlecap mines on tenpenny for example, or wipe out megaton without the nuke on a random save but, its just not a game that aged well :/. Its just dull. In fact i rate it lower than fallout 4 which i felt was also annoyingly meh.(below starfield even which i enjoy a lot, but ill admit its anything but a perfect game, both fallout 3 and 4 are actually very very mediocre sadly once you think about it, hell, radiants in fallout 4 gave more exp overall for example than actual quests simply due to being repeatable, whereas starfield actual faction questlines actually provide a lot of exp and can be replayed in new game plus).

I have vague memories of barely engaging with any of the content before I got to the credits and decided the game was too short, or too easy or something to that effect. When I went back and tried that second time I made sure to speak to everyone and choose a side, investing myself more thoroughly in all the interactions. So glad I went back and tried that second run I’ve spent far too many hours playing NV by this point as a result.

    13:18 that nakes NO sense whatsoever. The main questline in Fallout 4 is a carbon copy of the one from Fallout New Vegas bjt somehow the latter is the most favorite and the former is the most hated. The structure is almost exactly the same - go to Las Vegas/Diamond City, chase Benny/Kellogg, go to the lucky 38/the Institute, find the Chip/Shaun, meet faction leaders, do faction quests, go into the climactic battle. It's almost exactly the same. So many people hate the McGuffin like search for Shaun but somehow the Platinum Chip is loved as a McGuffin. Even the Powder Gangers and the Nuka World Raiders are similar. You are forced to do basically the same things. To love one but hate the other makes absolutely no sense. I rank the main questline from worst to best like that:
    6. FO76

    5. FO3

      the key difference is that fallout new vegas is well written, has extreme amounts of depth and massive amounts of actually meaningful side content that shapes the world around you, alongside multiple dlcs that explore various thematic elements from the main campaign in an isolated environment that helps to immerse the player and make them think. It also has an incredibly interesting world, amazing atmosphere, a superior perks system and more engrossing rpg elements that make you feel connected to your character, an interesting villain with solid motivations, and no generic voiced protagonist who nobody cares about. In contrast fallout 4 is a dungeon runner with a surface level, inconsistent, poorly written story with meaningless characters, no greater theme or narrative, poor atmosphere, meaningless sidequests and an intrusive and poorly thought out building minigame with decent at best dlcs. Besides all of that, go get revenge against the guy who shot you in the head by going to the most advanced city in the wasteland that is literally las vegas, is a much more interesting hook than go find that kid you dont care about by going to the rundown baseball stadium that looks like a junkyard. For me, Fallout 1 easily has the best questline, followed closely by New Vegas, then Fallout 2 and, after a large gap, fallout 4, followed by an even larger gap that leads to 76, with the worst being 3.

It reads to me like Emil Pagliarulo watched blade runner and decided he wanted to make something like that without actually understanding what makes blade runner's story so brilliant. As usual with Emil, who is unable to come up with an original story, this same question has been asked multiple times in fallout, specifically 1 and 2, and it was actually a well written story, but I'm assuming you haven't actually played those games. Regardless this conversation has been done to death multiple times over and anyone who knows the first thing about writing can tell you that fallout 3, 4, starfield, skyrim and everything Pagliarulo has written is terrible. The fact is, when a game is written by good writers with experience, it is likely to be well written. In contrast when a game is written by a level designer with no experience who believes that "dragons" is a valid theme, it will not be.
      Tim Cain and Mark Green, the main writers for fallout 1, had multiple years of experience writing, with Mark Green having a degree in behavioural science. Fallout 2 was written by a group of experienced writers headed by Chris Avellone, who is nowadays well known for his writing prowess and at the time of Fallout 2 had years of experience writing rpgs, ttrpgs and comic books. With Fallout New Vegas Chris Avellone and various other Fallout 2 writers returned, joined by Josh Sawyer who, you guessed it, had multiple years of experience writing rpgs and minored in theatre and who is now well known for his writing prowess.
      In contrast, Emil Pagliarulo is a level designer who became lead writer because he was buddy buddy with Todd Howard, who is now well known for not being able to write, with the only other writer Bethesda hired to work on Starfield mysteriously leaving the company as soon as the game was released.

    It's weird hearing people talk about the more serious tone of Fallout 1 and 2 and how Bethesda made it more goofy (and that's not entirely wrong) but one of the things that stopped me from beating 2 initially compared to 1 was the god awful pop culture references that completely sucked me out of the otherwise pretty good atmosphere the game had going for it.
    Have never really gotten the same level of whiplash when hearing Codsworth tell me a joke that just happens to reference another game or Yuri Lowenthal screaming "WHO WON THE LOTTERY?! I DID!!!"

    IMO Bethesda ruined Fallout with two things: synths and too much eldritch hooey. Synths are the single worst addition made to any established sci-fi property ever.
    They change the focus of the setting from dealing with the aftermath of an apocalypse into dealing with the paranoia of body snatchers.
    Fallout had hints of mystical stuff in the pre-Bethesda games but it was so small that it could be explained as 1) hallucinations (primarily from drugs) and 2) misunderstanding the situation as presented.
    Now they might as well just tell us that some future Elder Scrolls game will center around opening a rift into another reality and end that game with someone flying a dragon through a rift and start the next (prequel) Fallout with top brass at the military misidentifying the dragon as a Chinese mega-zord and nuking china in response, thus retconing and uniting the husk of a once decent franchise into their blob.

    • @youarealwayscorrect
      @youarealwayscorrect 5 місяців тому +4

      I think you're being overly dramatic when you call synths "the worst addition to any sci-fi property ever". You're welcome to hate the synths all you want, but they're definitely not worse than the worst lore additions to sci-fi franchises like Dune, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Mass Effect, Alien, Terminator and probably many more if we were to ask some sci-fi geeks.
      And Fallout 1 and 2 literally had telepaths, even in the form of animals and plants. It had psykers and literal ghosts. And it happens not due to the player character taking too many drugs or somehow being tricked - it's entirely canon. Two of them are major unavoidable main quest characters (Master and Hakunin).
      At least Bethesda always keeps their magical stuff separate from the main story or major quests (the only exception I can think of is that "magician"-ghoul from Nuka-World, although that guy may actually be using some magic tricks).

    • @mythrail
      @mythrail 5 місяців тому

      @@youarealwayscorrect it's the worst ever because it fundamentally changed the point of the setting. What other addition to any property has ever done such wide ranging damage to the fundamental reason for the success of the property? After synths are introduced there is always going to be a reason to consider every single character a potential synth. It changes the substrate of interaction from "do I cooperate or dominate my way to survival" to "is this person a person or a simulacrum, if it's a simulacrum how could I ever trust it... blah blah blah."
      The setting is no longer about the struggle of mankind to rekindle civilization and it is now a cheap knockoff of every other paranoid body snatcher scifi horror, now with clumsy bigotry analogies and poorly thought out threat models.
      Telepaths have often been part of sci fi and does not fit in the eldritch hooey category. Just because something is unexplained does not make it an appeal to mysticism. Even precognition can be somewhat plausible depending on the details.
      IMO both the deathclaw and the wanamingo stories from FO1 and FO2 were pretty good examples of just because the characters in the story have an interpretation that seems out there doesn't mean that it's actually mystical. This same mistaken understanding model applies to the player also.
      Hakunin: in the game you are given the option of telling him he has done too many drugs.
      If you are talking about the dream sequences or whatever you want to call them, I'm basically 100% a materialist in terms of what I think reality is, but I have had dreams that "highlight" unfinished tasks before. Seems like a normal functioning brain bringing important things forward.
      Master: I don't know what you are trying to reference the master. That he created a religion? Having a religion isn't the issue, it's treating it as if the religion actually changes what the nature of the reality is.
      In my opinion the first element of eldritch hooey that ended up in Fallout was in the FO2 quest "Return Anna's locket" and think I've seen at least one video where Tim Cain said he wished that didn't end up in the game. It was the only thing I categorize as having no material basis for being in the game, and if they hadn't gone full hooey in 3/(tiny bit in NV)/4/76 it could've been ignored/explained somehow the quality of the lore would be better IMO.

    • @youarealwayscorrect
      @youarealwayscorrect 5 місяців тому +2

      @@mythrail I disagree regarding synths changing the fundamentals of the setting, but whatever. It's just a local peculiarity of the Commonwealth region, not something gamechaning for the entire franchise. I'm pretty sure that synths will never play a significant role in this franchise ever again. Best case scenario is that we'll get some minor cameos and mentions, but that's it.
      At least it's not on the level of something like Star Wars, Terminator or Alien - completely destroying the established main characters, whose original arcs were basically showcasing the main ideas and messages of the franchise. Or Battlestar Galactica introducing a literal GOD in the very final episode in order to solve all of humanity's problems in an instant. Or Mass Effect introducing the Star Child, Kett or synthethis, which only majorly hurt the entire past, present and future lore of the franchise. Or countless Alien and Dune sequels... simply just existing.
      And eldritch horror can also perfectly apply to sci-fi. The fear of the unknown corresponds very well with the fear of the dark future. It's definitely much more fitting than generic fantasy-esque "spooky ghost want its' amulet back" or "cartoonish magical shaman talks to you in your dream" from fallout 2.
      And Master and Hakunin are canonically telepaths. Sorry, but denying that is purely a headcannon. Hakunin uses drugs to enhance his powers. And Master can even influence other beings from afar and destroy someone's mind with his immense magical powers, like he did with cultists in Mariposa or during his fight with the player character.

    • @mythrail
      @mythrail 5 місяців тому

      @@youarealwayscorrect I never said eldritch horror was bad or that it wasn't sci fi. Eldritch horror was not part of the original fallout setting, it was added, and it made the setting more gimmicky and less interesting. I'm not arguing whether or not these things are sci fi, I am arguing that they made the Fallout universe less specific. Lower resolution, less recognizable, less distinct flavor, less reason to think of them as related. The newer Fallouts are clearly set in a different world with a different aesthetic and rules to the reality than the first two (and possibly NV). These additions literally broke the _setting_ not just told a boring story or had a poorly motivated character.
      Side note: 2000s BSG had god(s) from well before the final episode, I think it was even in the initial mini series, there was just no reason to treat it as anything other than delusion before the final episode.
      1.) I don't think telepathy is exclusively a mystical concept. There are ways in which it could be explained as a technology or evolved feature, or exposure to the FEV virus or some other thing.
      2.) I don't think every presumed example of telepathy even in a world where it exists has to be actual telepathy, it could still be dreams, hallucinations, or trickery.
      3.) Telepathy was never my issue. I don't know why you are stuck in this rut.

I believed him and finally played it. By the time i realized he was lying i didnt care because i loved it so much.

    My first Fallout was FO4 🥴 I've played a bit of NV, wasn't a fan of Sepia tone, so never made it too far past the doctor's house(?) I actually pre-ordered F76, played for at least a year with an IRL friend, then couldn't take it anymore.
    I play Fallout 4 with mods sometimes. Not heavily modded, but QoL stuff & modern weapons/clothes. I still think it's an amazing game, with plenty of bugs/features(?), and I'll play it until Fallout 5 ruins my opinion of the franchise (just a guess!)

    My first Fallout game was Fallout 4, it was and I still think it is, very fun and enjoyable, then I played 76 and I actually loved it at launch, and still consider it as my favorite game in the series, then I played New Vegas and Fallout 3, and I think they are an ok game, but nothing special, with the worst of the two being Fallout 3, the lore of NV really boosts it a lot for me, I also tried to play 1 and 2 but I can't stand the gameplay, they are just so annoying

    On the note of the results being biased because your fanbase is likely more drawn to NV, here's a thought experiment that could be done: how many content creators are there in YT, and other platforms, that are focused more on 3, 4, 76, Shelter, and the classics? It would probably be difficult to establish that these people and their audiences have a preference towards those games, but that's something that would be interesting to observe.
    I don't think this would be representative of popularity for each game, because people are drawn to these specific games for different reasons, a FO Shelter player may simply not care to watch videos about Fallout lore, for example, but I still think it would be interesting to know these things.
