    The most egregious bethesda moment in Skyrim is that you can walk into the college of winterhold without ever having cast a single spell and one looney tunes episode later you're the freaking headmaster. not a student, not a lecturer, the fucking HEADMASTER. This kills replayability. Why would I play as a mage if, aside from the combat, the game plays exactly the same?

    • @gaulicwarlord
      @gaulicwarlord 3 місяці тому +16

      Because it’s not about replayability, it’s about keeping people on an infinite loop where they just keep playing on and on, with DLC added. Fallout NV and Morrowind are about replayability, because they’re actual RPGs. You build a character that has certain skills, that’s why in fallout 4 and Skyrim you don’t have level caps and skills don’t matter nearly as much, it’s to keep the player playing forever with radiant quests and enemies. It’s the definition of slop.

    The shake up to game design from Daggerfall to Morrowind is what saved Bethesda. But since then, they've done nothing. Their game design is the same, every game feels the same, they're Bethesda games, you know? It's a genre unto itself. But as we can see, every aspect of their games has deteriorated. Less choice/consequence/immersion, less reactivity, less quest variety, less depth in writing, lore, world building, less rpg elements. And the tone and subject matter of the games has gotten safer and blander.
    The best we'll get for ES6 is Fallout 4 but worse.
    WRONG.
    Why do people think they'll come back from Starfield? We saw the innocuous radiant quests from Skyrim become a major portion of Fallout 4's campaign. And we saw the most hated aspect of Fallout 4 -Preston Garvey and the infinite radiant trash become the main design pillar of Starfield. The hand crafted content is now the peripheral side stuff that's tucked away. They're not gonna suddenly walk back this trend.
    ES 6's writing will just be some wiki entries fed into Chat GPT, and the whole map will be proc gen. But there will be 1000s of hand crafted food items and bespoke pieces of junk for no damn reason.
    Will Shen left the company to work on other open world RPG's. Why? Cause Emil has all the power, and he's steering the game design further and further into shallow, simple, and dumb. You don't leave the biggest RPG company in the business to go make RPG's. Unless there's something terribly wrong.

      Its sadly not just Bethesda.
      Look at the R6 series and Call of Duty.
      Both of these series were serious terrorist/war based titles. Not gonna lie Siege was good. And yes it WAS good. I remember the time when operators looked like actual soldiers. Same goes for 2019 Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2&3. I mean Nicki Minaj in a Cod game? Tf? Both of them looks/feels like Fortnite and this is what will gonna destroy both series.
      Tom Clancy if i remember correctly died around 2013. And i was lucky to play older titles when i was little.
      I was stunned how every CoD game were unique to Call Of Duty Ghosts. After that we had that very futuristic era of the series,but i can't even say those were worse than the current games. Even Advanced Warfare had a mindblowinf story. Then 2019's MW got released and i had hopes which were vanished when i saw Vanguard. ColdWar was a good game (in my opinion). Zombies were insane and actually brought new mechanisms and game modes also the Story is a 10/10.
      I don't have much to say about R6 series. I skipped Vegas1&2,but older titles like Raven Shield&Athena Sword were insane.
      Operators feels like actual soldiers and not some guy with a motorcycle helmet. Not to mention its ambient of the game. Released in 2003&04 and it feels like i'm a real operator in that game. Even Ai's aim is insane on the hardest mode and the most important part is the planning. Yeah you can do that in Raven Shield&Athena sword (i played these 2 only). When to use breaching charges or smoke and even the code mechanism where you have 1 team waiting while the other gets in position and once you get there just give them the code to breach and smoke the terrorist from both sides 😂
      I'm a 24 year old guy,but these developers made me sad.

      People being WILLING to buy microtransaction bullshit has killed the gaming industry because companies stopped focusing on quality and started focusing on monetization. If they monetize a game enough, if they don't sell many copies, they'll still make money from microtransaction bullshit. I haven't paid for microtransactions in any game and I don't play mobile games. I tried Pokemon Go in 2016 when it released but having to buy fucking Pokeballs was the dumbest shit I'd ever seen and immediately stopped playing it.

    Just yesterday I talked with a friend of mine about Bethesdas priorisation of scale over actual content and how it negatively impacts their newer games. Far Harbour is a prime example how a smaller but densly packed Island is preferable to the spacious Nuka World, where you basically just shoot at things.

    • @Destroyer_V0
      @Destroyer_V0 3 місяці тому +6

      Honestly? Fair point. I will always recomend people pick up the far harbour DLC for fallout 4 if they haven't already. I have not once recomended nuka world. The sheer difference in writting and ending outcomes is clear as hell. One, is shallow, pick your 2 flavours of raider to support their take over of the park and parts of the commonwealth, or wipe them out. Binary.
      For far harbour. To brutally sumarize it. There are... a few different ending outcomes.
      All factions coexist, thanks to arcadia.
      the children of atom are wiped out, but arcadia and the harbour remains.
      The inverse, arcadia and the children of atom remain.
      And of course... the chaotic option. Destroy both far harbour and the children of atom, then sick either the brotherhood of steel or the institute on arcadia to finish the job, and wipe the island clean... unless you already killed both the BOS and institute, then you just have to do things, manually (I forget if they are essential NPCS)
      I wonder if there is an option to make peace between the children and the harbourmen, then wipe out arcadia?
      Either way, the potential outcomes in far harbour are far more impactful than that in nuka world. Even if what happens on the island, remains contained TO, the island.
      The other reason is one of the last good writers at bethesda was working on far harbour, so that helped.

      Bethesda did revive Fallout, bringing new fans (me included, I started the series with Fallout 3, then played 1 and 2 and became a hardcore fan) and they deserve some credit. However things are becoming more and more about money, not about creativity, and Bethesda changed as well.

They just need to get the exploration right.

    • @mehrshad7980
      @mehrshad7980 3 місяці тому +3

      @Guava11534 I believe starfield was too ambitious for these guys. the limitations they have due to creation engin being ass, its literally the reason for the half of the problems with starfield. Endless loading screens, not being able to land on a planet without a fast travel, invisible walls on planets, all of this basically ruin the whole impression and feel to the game. Obviously, the lack of content is also a huge bummer which is because of their whole random ass generation system. So yeah, exploration (which always was a strong point in bethesda games.) really suck in starfield.
      Now the next elder scrolls, it's totally a deferent case, there is not gonna be over 1000 planets. Its just one big map like we always had in ES and fallout games, so we can explore that whole map without any loading screen and Hopefully, they will give us much more handcrafted content. (So we might see that famous bethesda environmental storytelling again.)
      But my actual concerns are the writing, quest design, combat, and animations (specially the facial animation) and I dont think any of this important aspect of the game going to be that great. (just look at their history...) and more I think about it, when the game finally releases in probably 2028; if you just lower your expectations, it might not actually be that much of a bad experience. (If they don't completely screw it.)

    3:54 “Fallout 4 made some monumental improvements over the previous games.”
    Yes and no. In terms of overall gameplay, that can’t be denied. Fallout 4 undeniably has much better gameplay than its predecessors and this is coming from a veteran of 3 and New Vegas. But it fails in so many other aspects.
    What I will never forgive Bethesda for is taking away the weapons and armor that were seen in previous games. Why the fuck did they take away the AR-15 platform and the Browning guns found in New Vegas? I loved those weapons to death and as someone who loves to roleplay as a soldier, an AR platform and a 9mm pistol are my bread and butter weapons. Instead we are given stupid-looking slop of guns that are based on old designs that were previously seen in World War I. The “assault rifle” is prime example of this. A stupid concept of a water-cooling system for what is essentially a light machine gun judging by its size. If you know even the most barebones basics of gun design, you would realize that is an absolute negative IQ move especially when you realize water-cooled guns have been phased out before World War II.
    Thank God modders are trying to save this game from Todd Coward’s slimy hands. It is thanks to modders and modders alone that I can replace the shitty-looking guns in Fallout 4 with New Vegas-inspired modern weapons and armor.
    It’s more than clear that Bethesda is extremely jealous of Obsidian making the most successful Fallout game among the core fanbase despite being given only 18 months of development time. All in all, I love the Fallout and Skyrim but I hate Bethesda.

      >"Fallout 4 undeniably has much better gameplay than its predecessors and this is coming from a veteran of 3 and New Vegas"
      Even then it's debatable. Yes, the animations and feedback are better, but at the same time it's much more simplified than New Vegas. Fever weapons (I don't consider two same weapons with different mods as separate weapons), no ammo types, no damage threshold, no partial reloads with revolvers and shotguns (tbf there's no pump action shotguns in FO4 at all), no different melee moves you can learn, no disguises (and reputation system as a whole), no implants.
      I mean, sure, being able to build your own robots is cool and settlement building has its fans (even though Bethesda relied too much on it as a crutch to help them fill the game world), but that's not really something I've expected from a Fallout game, you know?

    I'll keep saying it: Fallout 4's protagonist is a pale shadow of what CD Projekt red accomplished with V and Geralt: If you want to give your character a fixed backstory and voice, then go all in and treat him like an already established character, an RPG can work fine even with such protagonist.
    Look at BG3, Origin characters absolutely do not make the game less immersive or less of an RPG. How about Harry Dubois from Disco Elysium? No dice.
    The reason the voiced protagonist doesn't work in Fallout 4 is that the dialogues, just like the rest of the story, are badly written, plain and simple.

There's plenty of room for improvement on every level but their soundtrack. Lol. That's probably the only real top-tier element of their games. Exploration is a close second.

    But seriously, I am watching behind-the-scenes for Starfield and I find out they never even had a central design document for the game. I watch another video to watch Bethesda's lead writer telling staff not to worry about story because WE will never stop to enjoy it anyways. Maybe it's time for Microsoft to have Todd focus on the engine he's been neglecting for the past decade and let OTHER people do the writing.

  • @heatherharrison264
    @heatherharrison264 3 місяці тому +4

    I mostly agree with the points made in this video. The first Bethesda game I played was Daggerfall. It does not have the detailed, hand crafted world of later games. Those who complain about the heavy reliance on procedural generation in Starfield will recognize the same issue with Daggerfall. However, this was way back in the 1990s, and for its time, Daggerfall was a bold and risky experiment. Furthermore, Daggerfall has a depth to its RPG mechanics that few RPGs - from any developer - can match. The reputation system alone is incredibly detailed. By today's standards, Daggerfall is clunky, unapproachable, and difficult. (I just love watching newbies struggle with the tutorial dungeon.) Even so, people interested in Bethesda's history should check it out. If you can master Daggerfall, you'll gain some street cred with cantankerous old gamers like me.
    I would place Bethesda's peak at Morrowind. It retains some of the systemic depth of Daggerfall, but in a game world with a more reasonable scale and with a lot more hand crafted content. Writing has never been Bethesda's greatest strength, and I don't consider Morrowind (or Daggerfall, for that matter) as a masterpiece in this regard, but I find the main story, the DLC stories, and the faction quests mostly superior to those that came later, though Oblivion is also relatively strong. There are some problems with Morrowind. The leveling system, in particular, is artificial, contrived, and thoroughly immersion-breaking. This is best resolved by installing a leveling mod. Oblivion is a similar situation, but it manages to be even worse - not paying close attention when accumulating skills and leveling can throw the game way off balance. Skyrim, in its simplicity, has some advantages here, and popular leveling mods for Morrowind and Oblivion use some of Skyrim's methodology. In general, I find Skyrim to be a rich, detailed world that is fun to explore, and the game works well if it is treated as a fantasy life sim where the character wanders aimlessly and hoards useless loot. These are activities that I enjoy - they constitute a sort of mindless fun that is just right after a hard day's work. Unfortunately, Skyrim is shallow, an unfortunate fact that becomes clear to anyone who closely interrogates whatever passes for story lines. The main quest is a parade of clichés that has few memorable moments. The civil war story line is a particularly fine example of ineptitude in video game writing and quest design; the game would be better off without it. It's clearly half baked and thrown together. There are some fun little plot twists in some of the faction quests, so it isn't all bad, but they have little effect on the static game world. Despite all this, I love Skyrim for everything that it does well, but when I consider the games that came after, I fear that Bethesda has learned many bad lessons from Skyrim. I also love Fallout 4, but generally for the same reasons that I love Skyrim. It's a good world in which to engage in some aimless wandering and junk collecting, but I have a hard time engaging with the stories and factions. I've never completed the game because, every time I start it, I get bored with the stories and end up building ugly buildings out of junk. (I avoid Preston like the plague, though. I don't want to get caught up in his repetitive nonsense, and I install mods to reduce settlement-related annoyances.)
    I haven't bought Starfield. It doesn't look promising. Maybe in a few years, I'll buy it on sale and see what the modders have done with it. I have little hope for subsequent games - we will have to look elsewhere for high quality RPGs. Hopefully, Larian will continue to deliver.

It's at this point, when I discovered what else there was, that I realized just how inadequate Bethesda always was. Older games have much better overall quality, but that doesn't change the fact that they are overshadowed by the games much older and less technological. Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 combined have the fraction of content that any one of Bethesda's games has, and yet they feel infinitely larger and deeper. Dark Messiah Might and Magic, a source game from 2005 has a first person combat system so unbelievably superior to anything made in 20 years since that there's nothing to compare it to, even mentioning Bethesda's auto clicker simulators makes Elder Scrolls seem like it's stuck in the 90s. I think with starfield and the last 2 fallout games its clear to see the things that made those games bad are also in their previous titles. But the previous titles always offered something that made it easy to forgive. It feels like the critiques that were made on FO3, Oblivion, Skyrim, and their other previous titles were turned into features of a bethesda game. Shallow writing, quantity over quality, dumbing down of gameplay mechanics, etc. Its a good thing that we are able to identify a Bethesda game just by looking at gameplay, identity is good. Playing a game that relies only on Identity instead of doing something new and interesting gets old. 3d rockstar games have a feel. Bully, Red dead, and GTA all play very similarly, yet they are all very different and actually have an interest in providing a fleshed out experience. I think of the Zelda series as well. Skyward sword was the Fallout4 of zelda in some aspects. It relied too heavily on the zelda formula. The next console zelda game was breath of the wild. Still keeping identity of zelda while changing so much and taking risks. Adaptation and change should be embraced. but corporations will never understand that. I will never wish for a company responsible for some of my best gaming memories to go under, but if they keep on this path I can see microsoft shutting them down. If a giant has to fall to shift the industry then so be it.

    fallout4 was darn near perfect. It just didn't know what it wanted to be. It was a rpg that was not a rpg, a crafting survival game with terrible building. It was just all over the place with its game design.
    Starfield though.. I played for a few hours, and then decided .. forget it, i'll make my own open world rpg. with blackjack, and hookers. I'm 3 months into development. I think indie developers are the way forward in games in general, we need people who have passion and vision creating games. The bigger a company gets, the less soul their products have.

      Just remember a lot of the game studios we love started out closer to being indie developers than to AAA studios. When Bethesda made Morrowind they were a middling studio facing potential bankruptcy but they managed to release one of the best fully 3D RPGs ever made even though it was a downgrade from Daggerfall.

      Hating on modern Bethesda doesn't take away from their past successes just shows how far they have fallen because they used to make great games. Part of the issue is personal preference versus objective criticisms, Bethesda is objectively bad at making RPGs, they have been since Oblivion.

      @@sonofwotan I would be inclined to agree with you on most cases but I am using it correctly so your point is moot and comes off as an attempt to avoid the point being made. RPGs as a genre have specific criteria that are the very points that differentiate them from action-adventure/looter-shooter games, leveling up and character building is just one of these aspects, story, writing, decision making these are also aspects that make an RPG an RPG and Bethesda has shown they are terrible at these aspects and have dumbed down the character building aspect so I reiterate after proving my point that Bethesda is objectively bad at making RPGs.

Examples would include a notebook that is 32 cm x 22 cm, or that a PS4 controller weighs 210 grams, or the GPS coordinates of a location. The word “objective” does not usually collocate with words like amazing, good, bad, terrible, awful, etc., for those are all words used to describe value judgments, which is to say, opinions. The problem with fallout 4's voiced protagonist isn't them being voiced it's that they are still meant for you to be able to project yourself on to them. When you give a character a voice you give them an identity. A silent protagonist however is one where the player can more easily project themselves on. So the problem isn't the voice the problem is by trying to have it both ways rather than having either a blank slate to project on or and interesting character with they're own struggles and ideals. You instead have a protagonist that's has the personality of a pet rock.
    Fallout 4 story really needed bethesda to either embrace the humanity of the character or allow the player to project the personality they wanted the character to have. The Yakuza games are a fantastic example of the first option Kiryu is an interesting character with they're own identity of which the player's are not allowed to act outside of. This allows Yakuza to have interesting main and Side quest. For an example of option 2 Fallout New Vegas made all the more relevant on account of being in the same franchise.
