  • Sleep apnea literally is a bad journey with many troubles, but fortunately MIR Spirodoc® helps to identify this disease.
    During the apnea the patient stops breathing and consequently stops snoring. Blood oxygen saturation falls remarkably, resulting in a sudden increase of the pulse rate. Later there is an abrupt awakening with a terrible choking feeling, heart palpitations and a great sense of distress.

    My positive diagnosis and my CPAP machine changed my life. I can sleep again. I don't fall asleep at the wheel or at my desk at work anymore, and I don't have those horrible startling awakenings in the middle of the night that feel like I'm going into cardiac arrest.

    I get these dreams like I'm falling from the sky all the time, ever since I was about 10 or 11 and these dreams never stop. The symptoms shown in the video seem to directly apply to my problem, because I find myself to stop breathing when I have these dreams. It's gone to the point where I wake myself up gasping for air. I'm glad I finally found out what this was.

Definately was scary but I just stay calm and focus on breathing, it's scary, of course it is you think you are going to die, but just have to stay calm and seek help if you can.

    why no similar effect while consciously holding your own breath to 1 minute

  • @TheCrederer
    @TheCrederer 6 років тому

    I have a similar thing. I'll hold my breath and slowly let it out and I'm told it sounds like letting the air out of an untied balloon. Like if you pinch the tip of it and let the air out slowly (I don't know if that makes sense the way I wrote it). My dad does the same and so does my uncle (his brother). I've looked into CPAP machines but those don't sound right for me. I have very stiff ears and even wearing headphones for over an hour causes great discomfort so I imagine a band around my ears all night would be downright painful over the course of a night. Plus I often sleep on my stomach which I'm told you can't really do with the mask on. Any tips for someone in similar situation would be appreciated

      Same, at first I thought every few months I would maybe just have a weird dream where I was suffocating or not able to breathe, but now I am thinking it is sleep apnea. Because I am thinking about it I am more aware of it now. It's happened at least twice badly in the past week.
      When I wake up I literally panic and sit bolt upright grabbing my chest, like someone has been suffocating me in my sleep, or I have been holding my breathe under water for too long. I feel like I have been starved of oxygen for a while and panic. I'm a pretty calm person, but the body just sends those 'oh shit' signals to my brain whilst I am asleep and there is nothing I can do but wake up in a panic, then breathe and try to go back to sleep.
      I'm kind of hoping it will just go away still...

    I just realized that I have this BIG time. I have a canary camera and just now reviewed myself sleeping last night. The snoring and gasping are crazy loud. I also noticed that I move legs move around almost constantly. I guess this explains why I'm so incredibly tired after waking up and throughout the day. Sometimes I fall asleep during the day whiteout even knowing until I wake up. Prior to today, I thought I was narcoleptic, now I know it's sleep apnea. I'm without insurance right now, I hope that if left untreated I'll be ok. Can't be that dangerous..right?

No more drying out, when you use this product. It helps to direct the forced air coming from your CPap. I actually stop using my C Pap , but go back and forth. But never sleep with out my Dr. Dakota now, ever.

    My friend self-diagnosed his sleep apnoea using a 'FitBit' watch which monitors breathing and blood oxygen via its built-in pulse oximeter. He is overweight and has a hyperglotiic tongue (large tongue) and still has his tonsils. He produced a lot of secretions in the night which contributed to his airway obstruction. He tried medication to dry out his secretions and his sleep apnoea went!!
    He used a double dose of cold medication at bedtime (phenylephrine 2 x 12.2mg) and it has changed his life until he continues to lose weight

      I knew I had a problem after finding out I was getting carbon monoxide poisoning from my boiler. I probably already had sleep apnea but the CO poisoning amplified it. That was almost 5 years ago. I’d wake up gasping for air and instant headache. My toes and other um,,,things were purple. The only way I could get through the stopping breathing long enough to really sleep was whiskey and on multiple occasions a cocktail of whiskey, melatonin, zquil, cbd, Valium, delta 8 gummies etc. then last year I worked in LA for 4 months and found a THC/CBN gummy and quit drinking to sleep almost immediately. Anywhoo, my Fitbit has shown several spikes in blood oxygen levels every night for a long time. Finally got the Dr to set me up for a sleep study a month ago and according to the Fitbit it wasn’t nearly as bad as some nights and they diagnosed me with severe sleep apnea. I’m working on Washington now and need to get set up with a machine but now I’m procrastinating.

  • @kinnison41
    @kinnison41 6 років тому +3

    Sleep Apnoea isn't like this, well certainly not the type I have. You *don't* suddenly wake up to full conciousness, your body just nudges your brain to tell you to take a deep breath, which means you never acheive a proper REM sleep because you just keep looping 1 minute at a time. I never knew I had it, only my GF knew saw that I was not breathing for a minute at a time. Have a CPAP now, so I'm much better, but still generally means a shorter life span.

      Yes you can suddenly wake up just as the video shows,I get it frequently I wake up suddenly and take a huge gasp for air It may depend on the type of Apnoea you have though,mine can be from sleeping at night to just nodding off lightly in the chair,to being fully awake but relaxed then this sudden gasping like my breathing has stopped,there's no escape for me right now,I thinking medication being a cause.

      The diaphragm keeps TRYING to bring air into your lungs. You don't just stop breathing with obstructive sleep apnea. Your airway gets blocked just like if someone was strangling you. In fact, it heaves much worse than this video. This was a demonstration. I have obstructive sleep apnea and before having it treated... it is fucking horrible. And yes... I have woken up grabbing my neck like he did because you don't know what's happening upon waking up. It literally feels like you're being suffocated... because YOU ARE. With central sleep apnea, you actually stop breathing. no diaphragm movement happens. That's scary shit.

      Because the patient's stomach/diaphragm actually does continue to move, as the body continues to attempt to breathe. My boyfriend's mouth and lips work like a fish gasping for a few breaths before his lungs are able to work hard enough to gasp a breath in past the obstruction in his throat. It's really quite disturbing to watch.

      I am a registered nurse and see this in patients often. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when you cannot keep your airway open when you sleep, resulting in a halt in breathing and a sudden awakening when your oxygen level get low enough that your body "wakes you up" to breath (oxygen levels can fall to 60% at times, like in this video, and normal/healthy oxygen levels are between 95%-100%, so dropping over 30% is very scary). It can result in a variety of adverse health outcomes including heart disease, specifically high blood pressure which can lead to stroke, heart attack, and/or heart failure. It can also lead to excessive daytime sleepiness because each time you awaken, you exit the deep sleep stage and you essentially don't get enough sleep for an extended period of time. If you have true sleep apnea, you should be wearing a machine called a BIPAP or CPAP at night which helps to push air into the lungs with each breath and keeps the airway open. It is only worn at night. I have had patients who tell me that they feel like a totally new person after starting BIPAP or CPAP and don't feel nearly as tired. Losing weight and refraining from alcohol use before bed can also help. Talk to your primary care provider and they can refer you to a sleep specialist who can test you for sleep apnea. Best of luck!! :)

      Katherine, both of my grandmothers were RNs. The world needs dedicated hard working RNs. I hope all your patients appreciate your work.
      I wonder how sleep apnea affects dreams/nightmares. I tend to dream of my own death a lot, often by drowning or suffocation. I've got a special bite plate for my sleep apnea, I've only stopped breathing for seven seconds (i was told it was light sleep apnea, due to my tongue falling back and clogging my wind pipe), my mother has sleep apnea. during a full sleep test. 20 electric wires attached to my face, head and body. i never hit deep sleep or level 3, or was it called N3 sleep? I'm also diabetic with polyuria and most likely nocturnal polyuria, I usually wake up 3-4 times a night. My sleep test was back in spring of 2015. What type of doctor should i get a referal to to treat that. I only woke up once the night of my sleep test. Thanks.
      Anyway with all those wires for the sleep test, no one is going to sleep like they normally do.

      My 88-year old mother, who lived alone, recently died from a massive hemorrhagic stroke. I found her unresponsive in her bed after she did not answer the phone when I called. I called 911 and she was transported to the hospital. They conducted a CT scan and they showed my wife and I, who are both in health care, the films. (When I taught premed-track college-level anatomy and physiology, I made sure that my students understood that our brains start to show signs of trouble after being deprived of oxygen for only 60 seconds.) I stayed the night with my mother in the hospital while she received comfort care. She was attached to a monitor for oxygen saturation. This video is poignant for me. I observed the slow decline in her PO2 (oxygen saturation) with cardiac compensation via increased heart rate - over several hours until she passed. :-(

  • @JiffyRiff
    @JiffyRiff 6 років тому +1

    As a sleep technologist it's very sad seeing how terrible patients sleep. CPAP is a life changing treatment. However, most patients are very resistant to treatment. It's like trying to convince a lifelong smoker to quit smoking.

    • @bethanypetersen7005
      @bethanypetersen7005 6 років тому

      JiffyRiff any suggestions for waking due to severe dry mouth from a cpap? I have no other issues with it. And yes it has a warm humidifier on it. It didn't always seem this bad but as the house has gotten more dry from winter my CPAP has made my mouth feel like cotton.

    • @JiffyRiff
      @JiffyRiff 6 років тому +1

      Bethany Petersen If you are using a nasal CPAP mask it is likely that you are opening your mouth and the leaking air causes the dry mouth. If you are using a full face mask you may have air leaking from the side of the mask. Otherwise crank up that humidifier all the way. As long as you don't start getting condensation build up in the hose or mask.

    • @bethanypetersen7005
      @bethanypetersen7005 6 років тому

      Thanks. I'll try tightening/adjusting the straps a bit tonight. It's a full mask because I definitely mouth breathe. I'm fairly new at this CPAP stuff in the last few months.

    • @marcusdamberger
      @marcusdamberger Рік тому

      Please don't compare someone like myself with a f*ckn smoker who should know better. Like I'm addicted to sleeping like crap. Your asking me to give up the way I've slept since I arrived in this world (and the way the rest of the population sleeps every night) and now saying I have to have a god damn mask on my face whenever I sleep for the rest of my life? I've tried the mask and the nasal pillow or whatever they want to call it. I've tried tape to keep my mouth shut, I have the humidifier on, I'm still waking up with dry mouth, or claustrophobia attacks if I try the full face mask. Still get dry mouth with the full face mask, it's all pure crap sleep. If it were so easy, than why can only 50% of people keep using CPAP and the rest can't tolerate it? Maybe the treatment sucks. It's not addressing the root cause.
      If I wear the mask, or the pillow or if I constantly wake up with lips motor-boating because the air is escaping out of my mouth. With or without tape, it wakes me up with the constant rush of air out my mouth. CPAP is NOT A SOLUTION to this problem. It's an inadequate band aide. I can only see surgery fixing it in the long run. But that will never be taken care of by our insurance industry in this land of ours..
      I'm almost positive it's almost always an anatomy issue, i.e. choke points in the back of the throat that collapse. I've gained a ton of weight over the years, and I remember having crap sleep in collage too before I gained more weight. Only 20% of people who lose all the weight, and I mean ALL the weight might, just might on a small basis cure their sleep apnea. But probably not. Going from an AHI of 80 to 60 does nothing to solve sleep apnea. Your still severe, but insurance still won't do anything, even if you lose the weight and prove it's not your weight.
      Sleep Apnea is a NO win situation for the patient, they are just blamed for having it because they are fat. Ever think maybe they are fat because the apnea events are causing constant stress on the body and causing to gain weight? Or that person has absolutely no energy to do exercises, considering they are falling asleep at work all the time or whenever they do something mundane like read. I'm probably going to get a heart attack from this shit. I'll never know what good sleep is, haven't since my 20's, now 50. I guess when I die I'll know what sleep really is.
