  • Hi, everyone! Today I decided to discuss how I resolved most of the clay soil issues around my patio and some other tips.
    For those who would like to support the SICSA Pet Adoption & Wellness Center, please go to the following link: www.sicsa.org/the-poop-show/ Fill out your information, choose "Event Ambassador" and put my name "Matthew Ingram" in the "how you heard about this event" section. I hope you win and good luck! I mistakenly stated the chance purchased was tax deductible, but it is not. Anyone in the U.S. can enter. Think how many plants $10,000 could buy! ;) The event will be live streamed on September 25, 2021 and more details are available at the link.

    I lived for 11 years in Perrysburg, OH about 4 hours north of you. Like you we bought a house in a subdivision that had been a farm. Yes, the builders scraped off the topsoil and sold it leaving homeowners with clay subsoil. Ohio is well known for pottery made out of clay like you got out of that planting hole. The builders also disposed of smaller construction debris by burying it onsite. That was my experience. You are figuring your challenges out because your garden looks lovely!

    I moved from zone 7 Southeast NC to zone 5 Wisconsin two years ago. I moved from a yard with beautiful soil to a yard with hard clay soil. I planted a row of Limelight Hydrangeas next to my privacy fence facing east ? But I'm planning on digging them all up this fall and amending the soil and then replanting them. I have so many beds that I've planted in the last two years, but none are draining well. Sadly I created a lot of work for myself, but it's a learning experience. Thank you for posting about your soil and helping out the animals. I use my Amazon Prime Smile to donate to animal shelters. Lots of people don't know that you can use the (Amazon Smile) to give a percentage to a charity of your choice. I'm always looking for people dealing with the same clay problems so I've subscribed to learn more. Your garden is beautiful and an inspiration.

    Hi Matthew, I must say that burgundy is your color! I have heavy clay soil also, so it's nice to hear how you amend it to help with drainage issues. I definitely need to add more amendments to my soil, and I probably need to back off on watering a bit.
    I'm looking forward to your gardening adventures with your upcoming visitor Jessica. I also love her channel. Have a great rest of the week. ~Margie

    Hi Matthew! It's always nice listening to you. You have such a pleasant, calming voice. I love the way you explain things so that everyone can understand what you're doing, or have done. I think I've seen all of your recent videos, but don't remember you mentioning Jess coming for a visit. How fun for both of you! I'm so glad she introduced you to us in her video. I've been enjoying you ever since. It will be fun watching the two of you together again. Would it be possible for you both to talk about your history, like how/when you met, etc.? I would really enjoy that! Your shed looks so good. Love the colors you picked. It's great that you are involved in supporting the pups. Is that where you got yours from? Thank you so much for sharing!

    You're so sweet - the event for the pups is perfect. I thought I misheard you when you said "poop show" thinking you meant "pooch show" so I whooped with delight when I read the competition. So funny!
    Great information as always about the soil. Around my area is nothing but clay, so I'm not sure what will be more cost effective - raised beds or amending the land. Time will tell!

    Hello!! New sub from Roots and Refuge. Decided to check you out and found this video very helpful. Just moved to new home in the southern MO and have found we have very thick clay soil. Haven't ever dealt with clay before was used to sandy soil. Strange that moving 10 miles up made such a huge difference in the soil consistency. Thank you for the information. Look forward to more.

    We had the same issue with a Venus Dogwood we lost. Our local garden center replaced it and let me pick a new Dogwood. I chose a Ruby Red Dogwood. My husband dug a HUGE hole. We did some amending, and he also dug a channel and put in a PVC pipe to drain the water away. He tested it before planting. It DID drain away. The Venus had cracked up the trunk last winter and by the spring, only 1/4 of the leaves came back. And when we dug it up it was holding a lot of water. I’m wondering if the hole that previously wouldn’t drain had the tree so saturated, that when the water froze, it cracked the tree up the main trunk. I’m really hoping we have resolved the issue and the Ruby Red Dogwood and it will thrive next spring. I thought the PVC pipe was so smart and had never heard of anyone else doing that until now.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 роки тому

      That’s so interesting! Yeah it was holding water so bad I tried anything I could think of and the PVC seemed like a good option since it was already on a slope. It’s thriving so far!

    Have you ever tried using gypsum to help with your clay soil? I've used it in my raised garden beds and front perennial garden to combat my clay issues with success, but it needs to be continually reapplied seasonally I'm told. I'm still experimenting with it here in Wisconsin.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 роки тому +2

      That is one additional thing I added to the bed I forgot to mention. Lots of gypsum, but it does have to be added over and over consistently. It’s also a slow fix.

    Thanks for this info. I am in the same situation where the builder scraped off the topsoil and left us clay. I recently put an ornamental maple tree into a new bed and had a heck of a time trying to amend the clay. Still working on it and your video helps alot. Curious about the PVC pipe for drainage and what that looks like.

    New to your wonderful channel so sorry if you have answered in another video but have you used pine soil conditioner mixed with your clay and how did it go? Natorps wouldn’t let me leave without it. I dug a hole today I know drainage will be an issue I did add perlite today for the first time. I read clay clogs perlite but mixing with my hands and a shovel today - the clay and with the pine conditioner and some siltier soil I can get before I hit more clay - I don’t think that is necessarily true. It looked pretty loose to me and I will keep using the perlite.

    Hi there! How does the clay soil there compare to Alabama red clay? I removed everything from an entire garden bed this summer, amended with compost and soil conditioner, and replanted in a single day! That area held onto water more than other garden beds. **Fellow Alabamian here! Roll Tide! **

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  2 роки тому +1

      I’ve never had a garden in Alabama myself, so I don’t have any personal experience. My grandfather was a huge gardener in Alabama and was always successful. The land is so different between lots it’s hard to say. I just know some spots on my property will absolutely not drain at all. It’s super frustrating, but I’ve learned to watch for the signs that a plant will likely struggle when digging.
